The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district, a major copper-producing area since 1961, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn about 45 kilometers northeast of the northern Chile port city of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Copper oxide minerals occurring as atacamite (Cu C1(OH)3) and chrysocolla (copper silicate-hydrate) were discovered in the district in the early 1900's (Knobler and Joseph, 1962). The mine is situated in the northern Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions on earth, and presently receives less than 1 cm per year of precipitation. The extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert is thought to have prevailed since at least Middle Miocene time (Mortimer et al., 1978) when development of important supervene copper enrichment was slowed in many areas of northern Chile (e.g., Chuquicamata, Exotica). Despite the paucity of precipitation, landform development is mature, with large alluvial fans and alluvial-filled valleys covering much of the region. In addition, the aridity and presence of salts have led to the formation of a sub-surface cementing of alluvium and colluvium by halite-rich caliche ranging from a few centimeters to over 3 meters in thickness. These factors, resulting in poor outcrop exposure, make even reconnaissance mapping difficult.

The Permanente plant of Kaiser Cement & Gypsum Corporation is located at a unique thick deposit of Calera Limestone (Figure 1) on the southwest side of San Francisco Bay. Limestone is rare in the eugeosynclinal Franciscan assemblage, constituting less than 0.1 percent of the total volume. On the northwest part of the San Francisco peninsula Calera Limestone is present as isolated masses from the type sect ion near Rockaway Beach southeastward for ten miles, where the belt is truncated by the San Andreas fault. The large Permanente deposit is sixteen miles south of the truncated belt, on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault. Scattered small exposures are known for about twenty miles southeasterly from Permanente. (1,2) Most deposits of Calera are thin; the type section is about two hundred feet thick. At Permanente, however, the normal limestone section contains at least four hundred feet of limestone; and, due to folding and extensive faulting, the total vertical thickness of the limestone section is over 1400 feet. The unusual thickness of limestone is due to low angle thrust faulting. This fortuitous structure formed a deposit of limestone that supplies an 8,500,000 barrel cement plant in a major metropolitan market.

The purposes of this presentation are: (1) to discuss the actual as well as potential incidents that have caused and that could cause groundwater contamination at uranium in situ leach mining sites and (2) to discuss remedial actions and solutions that have been or that could be implemented in the future to stop or prevent serious groundwater contamination from in situ leach mining in Wyoming?s Powder River Basin. Open pit, underground, and existing and proposed in situ leach uranium mine sites in the Powder River Basin are shown in Figure 1. In situ leach mining or solution mining for extracting minerals in liquid form is a relatively new addition to the list of conventional mining methods currently used to extract uranium in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Basically, the in situ leach mining method involves: (1) the injection of a leach solution lixiviant (an acidic or basic oxidizing solution) into a uranium-bearing ore body, via injection wells, to complex the contained uranium, (2) mobilization of the uranium complex from the host material via creation of a soluble complex salt, and (3) surface recovery of the solution bearing the uranium complex via production wells. Uranium is then separated from the leach solution by conventional milling unit operations (ion exchange).

The Homer-Wauseca Mine is operated by the Hanna Mining Company, three miles north of Iron River, Michigan on the Menominee Iron Range. The mine produces 5,300 tons of direct shipping iron ore daily. The present main producing level is at a depth of 1,500 feet below the collar. The ore body continues to a depth of 2,700 feet below the collar, to which depth the modern circular concrete shaft has been completed. A view of the property is shown in Figure #1. This paper is a report on the development of large underground boreholes used initially to conduct stope filling material into inaccessible, mined-out stopes. Later holes were drilled for ventilation raises, for mine drainage, for passageway for power cable, also for the primary breaking point for long hole stoping. Some, which were drilled as ventilation raises, were later stripped to a suitable size for a manway or ladder road. The holes varied in size from 6" to 30" with the present popular, economical working size being 16 1/4", used as a stope fill passage in mined out areas and for ventilation in deeper development. Foremost has been the desire to develop equipment suitable for drilling raises large enough for manways.

Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.

Mill scale is an oxide waste product of the steel mills, which contains around 70% iron and other allied impurities. In the present context, a dynamic prototype counter current reactor (CCR) has been used for experimentation and simulation of particle bed by using discrete element method (DEM). Mill scale was pulverized to ASTM mesh range 140 (106 μm)/ + 270 (53 μm), and then it was oxidized in CCR to make single oxide Fe2O3 phase by maintaining required thermodynamic conditions such as pure oxygen at 1100 °C. Then this oxidized powder was subjected to reduction reaction in CCR having gas mixture ( H2:N2) ratio of 1:4 at 875 ± 5 °C for filling degree (fd) and reactor revolution (ω) ranging from 5.38 to 16.14% and 2 to 5 rpm, respectively. A creeping fluid flow condition (Re ˂ 1) and natural heat convection (Gr/Re2 ˃˃ 1) has been maintained while undergoing solid–gas reaction. Besides particle bed behavior has been quantified by Froude number (Fr) for the optimum operating window. The simulation was validated by the experimental results of reactor reaction product by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Prevailing heat transfer mechanism and reduction reaction mechanism has been established for solid–gas counter current conditions.

The behavior of As bioleaching using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) in mine tailings containing highly concentrated As contents (i.e., As=33877 mg/kg) was systematically evaluated according to the changes in temperature (25?40°C, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8), pulp density (0.5?4%, temp=30°C, pH=1.8), and initial pH(1.8?2.2, temp=30°C, pulp density=0.5%). The changes in temperature and pulp density affected the As leaching behavior more than the change in initial pH did. Based on the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) results, the As leaching was attributed to solution acidification. In particular, As leaching was accelerated with increasing sulfate production in the reacting solution. After bioleaching, surface of tailings examined that many pores which dissolved As were formed by a chemical reaction due to bacteria. The As bioleaching efficiency by A. thiooxidans was enhanced by the oxidation of both the added elemental sulfur and the sulfur compounds in the mine tailings. The As bioleaching efficiency was maximized at 50.5% under conditions of an initial pH of 2.2, reaction temperature of 30°C, and pulp density of 0.5%.

The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. The phosphate industry is the fourth-ranking mineral industry in Tennessee; it has an annual value of 13,000,000 and a yearly production of almost 2,000,000 tons of phosphate ore. Tennessee, at present, is second in rank of phosphate production in the United States. In accord with the importance of this mineral commodity, the Tennessee Division of Geology, is conducting a continuing study of the industry' and the raw s, materials upon which it is dependent. Of the three type's of phosphate found in Tennessee, the brown phosphate rock of the Bigby faces of the Bigby-Cannon limestone is by far the most extensive in occurrence and is the only type being mined at the present time. Because of the importance of the brown phosphate ores, our Division has mapped , in detail the outcrop pattern of the Bigby facies of the Bigby-Cannon limestone. The geologic mapping was done by Dr C. W. Wilson, Jr. and others under his super-vision and the geology plotted on 7 1/2-minute topographic maps, with scale of 1 to 24,000 or 1 inch equals 2,000 feet. These maps will be available for use in the near future and will be published later-with complete geologic coverage.

During the planning phase of the fine coal cleaning addition at the Gary Coal Preparation Plant, careful consideration was directed toward the problem of minus 48 mesh refuse disposal. The plant flow sheet included wet screening the raw coal at 1/4 inch, pumping the minus 1/4 inch raw coal to bowl desiltors for desliming, and then cleaning the disliked raw coal on tables. The material to be removed from the circuit as minus 48 mesh refuse consisted of the minus 100 mesh desiltor overflow thickened in two 120 foot diameter thickeners and minus 1 mm screened from the table refuse. Later a flotation plant was added to recover coal from the desiltor overflow, and a classifier replaced the screens to make a sharper size separation of the table refuse at 48 mesh Today the minus 48 mesh refuse at Gary consists of thickened flotation tailings and thickened spiral classifier overflow. The transportation of large quantities of fine wet refuse filter cake mixed with jig and table refuse over existing conveying equipment would have been neither dependable nor economical. Filtration was therefore impractical, and disposal of the fine materials was a problem. The decision was to pump the material to storage ponds

Manufacturers have improved various stirred mill types to be well adapted to fine and ultrafine grinding applications. These stirred mills, which are operated in wet or dry conditions, may be classified as horizontal — such as AHM-horizontal agitated media mill, IsaMill and Drais mill — or vertical — such as tower mill, Vertimill, Maxmill, Stirred Media Detritor and ATR vertical agitated media mill. The main difference between vertical and horizontal structures is in their operational variations. Additionally, the scaling-up of mills is also an important parameter for selecting the suitable orientation [1]. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch-type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1 × 10−3 to 5 × 10−3 Nm at 750 and 1,500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value.

Gold and silver often occur finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite. The use of biological leaching to dissolve pyrite and liberate gold has been extensively studied for a concentrate from the Porgera deposit, Papua New Guinea. The successful operation of a continuous bioleach circuit has been demonstrated. Bioleach residues were cyanide leached to extract gold and silver, and unreacted pyrite recovered for recycle to the bioleach. A 26 day steady state continuous bioleach test on a concentrate assaying 14.3 g/tonne Au and 87.0 g/tonne Ag produced residues with an average 73.5% weight loss and a pyrite oxidation of 88%. Cyanidation and recovery of pyrite from the cyanide residues for recycle gave overall recoveries of 92.1% gold and 74.6% silver. A proportion of the remaining precious metals was found in the bioleach solutions and may be recoverable. Losses to tails were 3.0% gold and 8.1% silver. Final tails represented 14.3% of the feed weight and averaged 1.84 g/tonne Au. A description of the continuous bioleach circuit and bioleach residue handling procedures, and the results of the study are presented. The features and advantages of biological oxidation as a pretreatment for refractory precious metal ores and concentrates are discussed.

The free-milling ore characteristics of the Fort Knox gold deposit are ideal for studying gold and silver behaviors in various processing circuits without serious interference of sulfide minerals and other refractory factors. A galvanic effect leads to faster silver dissolution than gold dissolution and, as a result, the Au/Ag solution concentration ratio increases through the leach circuit. In the CIP circuit, Au adsorption is more effective than Ag adsorption. The Au/Ag solution concentration ratio decreases from 10.0 to 1.0 as the slurry advances from CIP tank #1 to CIP tank #5, while Au/Ag ratio in the carbon increases from 3.2 to 15.3, as the carbon advances from CIP tank #5 to CIP tank #1. Silver is stripped more effectively than gold from the loaded carbon. The Au/Ag ratio in solution reaches 2.0 in the first 75,700 L of strip solution that pass through the loaded carbon; as the stripping process continues, the Au/Ag ratio in the strip solution increases. In the electrowinning circuit, the Au/Ag ratio in the spent electrowinning solution is significantly lower than that in the electrowinning feed, indicating that Au is more rapidly deposited onto the cathode than Ag.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. Introduction Powered supports in longwall mines essentially operate under two conditions: 1. Static (non-working) 2. Dynamic (working) There is a variety of static conditions which may exist in a mine. These may include a temporary stoppage of work for a few minutes or stoppage of work for days because of strikes or lack of demand for coal. Studies on pressure behavior were made during brief stoppages of work (few hours) as well as a long stoppage of work (two weeks). In dynamic conditions, the pressure variation on supports is expected to follow a certain pattern. However, in many cases that does not happen. Pressure-time characteristics of each leg of the supports were studied. This paper discusses the research findings of the studies made on powered support pressure behavior under both static and dynamic conditions. Studies on Pressure Variation in Static Conditions It has been noted (Brenner et a1.,1975) that the pressure distribution on mechanized longwall faces is random in nature and changes with time and position along the face. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the distribution of support pressures for the front left leg of supports in two different mines. In both the cases it can be seen that the variation of the support pressures along the face is indeed absolutely random. However, the nature of randomness in both the cases is very different. The data in Figure 1 (Mine 1) is much more random than the data in Figure 2 (Mine 2). This can also be seen from the standard deviation of the data (81 26 Pa versus 4000 pa) . By comparing the results of ten other sets of data the same conclusions can be arrived at. Since it was found that in Mine 1, the pressure on support legs was extremely random, batches of ten supports each were taken and the mean pressure plotted. This mean pressure line is shown in Figure 1. It was expected that this would smooth out the variation due to individual props and reveal a better picture of the support pressure distribution. For the case cited, the standard deviation is lowered to 5043 Pa from 8126 Pa which indicates that, on an average, the supports tend to take loads more uniformly, however for individual support legs the load on the supports is very random. The significance of this is that, if the supports are selected on the basis of theoretical load calculations alone (based on the roof block concept or some other concept), only the mean value of the support load required will be known. In the case of a pressure distribution with a high standard deviation, some supports selected on the basis of mean value will fail, while others will be supporting low loads. Hence, for proper selection of support capacity, it is not only necessary to know the average load but also the expected nature of the distribution. The only reason why the supports are supporting the roof in Mine 1 well is the fact that the yield load is above the highest level of load attained. If Mine 2, which has a much higher average load, had the same sort of standard deviation, the loads on the individual legs could easily exceed the support load. For example, if the pressure distribution followed a normal curve and the mean pressure was 36,700 Pa with a standard deviation of 9000 Pa, it is possible that 67% of the supports will be within the pressure range of 36,700 plus or minus 9,000 Pa, or 22,700 and 45,700 Pa. Many of the supports could then exceed the yield load of 40,000 Pa. It is clear then that the mean load is an inadequate criterion for estimating support resistance. The nature of the problem is statistical and such an analysis should therefore be made as far as pressure data are concerned. Statistical Analysis of Pressure Data. Gold-silver and copper-gold deposits with high-temperature wallrock alteration of Ca-Mg-Fe-Al silicates occur in ca. 3.0 Ga old greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. The deposits are hosted by amphibolite-facies komatiites, basalts and BIF, controlled by ductile shear zones and located within the contact-metamorphic aureoles of composite granodiorite-granite batholiths. Disseminated sulfides and free gold form foliation-parallel ore zones in a gangue of anhydrous silicates (garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine), hydrous silicates (amphibole, biotite) and calcite. The deposits may be classified on the basis of their dominant economic metals as: 1(1) Gold skarns with substantial silver as by-product, represented by the Marvel Loch mine (production: 2,200,000 t at 3.5 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, loellingite, arsenopyrite, galena, gold and magnetite. (2) Gold skarns with low silver contents, represented by the Nevoria mine (production:1,850,000 t at 3.4 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, Bi-tellurides and magnetite. (3) Copper-gold skarns, represented by the Elverdton mine (production: 850,000 t at .7 5 Cu, 0.81 g/t Au), and characterized by the mineral association magnetite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, gold and Ag-Bi tellurides.

Linear programming on desktop computers is commonly used to optimize coal blending proportions. The objective function is usually the cost of the blend. The constraints consist of materials and heat balances as expressed as linear functions of the blend. This is illustrated in Example 1. Inclusion of a sulfur compliance constraint in more complex because the maximum permitted sulfur percentage is not a pre-specified constant. Rather, it is a function of the calorific power of the blend itself. The current limit of 1.2 pounds of sulfur dioxide per million Btu may be expressed as: [Sulfur Max%= 0.6 . Hl10,OOO with H in Btu/lb.] A proper constraint equation may be formed by defining for each coal a function that is the difference between the actual sulfur percentage and the maximum sulfur percentage. This may be regarded us an excess sulfur percentage. For Coal A of Example 1. this would be: [ Sulfur Excess%=0.5-0.6 13,000/10,000=-0.28] This value would be used as the coefficient of the weight proportions of this coal in the blend. The complete constraint equation would then be the sum of such terms for each coal set less than or equal to zero. This is illustrated in Example II. [ ]

The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char) which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal -3.4 mm gasifier slag (~85% ash) to separate high (~100%) ash slag from low (~50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71% was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1 mm in size.
