PotashCorp?s Aurora phosphate mine, in Beaufort County, NC, operates four low pressure boilers and four high pressure boilers to meet its process steam requirements. Maintaining these boilers is critical to meeting production demands. Processing phosphate ore into phosphoric acid requires large amounts of sulfuric acid and steam. Ore is mined from the phosphate deposit with large bucket excavators after 9 to 30 m (30 to 100 ft) of overburden is removed. The phosphate ore is mixed with water to make a slurry that is pumped to the mill. Elemental sulfur is burned in the presence of air to make sulfuric acid. This process is highly exothermic and boilers produce steam while cooling the process. The phosphate ore is reacted with sulfuric acid and the resulting products are refined into different grades of phosphoric acid for fertilizers, feed stock and food additives. Plant operators at the mine were challenged with boiler feed water that was high in silica and other contaminants. As a result, boiler operations were experiencing difficult, labor-intensive operations and equipment deterioration. This resulted in higher operating costs and diminished processing performance. The facility was operating an aged boiler feedwater pretreatment system that included warm lime softening followed by pressure filtration and a cation/anion/mixed bed demineralizer system. The demineralizer required frequent regeneration and chemical usage was high and costs were difficult to predict. Depressurized well water (DPW water), used for plant utility water and boiler makeup, is very high in silica, in the range of 60-70 ppm. Silica can form scale at pressures below 600 psig. Above 600 psig, silica starts to volatize, carrying over with steam to potentially form deposits on downstream equipment and processes. Mine officials decided to upgrade the boiler feedwater pretreatment system to a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis (RO) membrane system. This new system, which started up in March 2009, has improved operating performance and reduced water consumption and overall operating expenditures.

A new face ventilation system was needed at the Allied Chemical Trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. The development of an exhaust manifold face ventilation system came from a need to reduce the dust and noise concentration level while maintaining methane control at the continuous miner working face. Dust laden air from a heading being driven by a continuous miner was contaminating the intake air in the mine around the roof bolter operator and adjacent headings. Each working heading was exhausted into the last open crosscut by a face fan. A face fan would contaminate the adjacent downstream heading with dust-laden air until a high dust concentration developed in the final entry before the returns. A face ventilation system was needed to give the exhaust of each heading an individual path to the return air. In addition, the system could not interfere with the present room and pillar mining process. A manifold system of rigid duct ventilation tubing was designed using the existing fans in a parallel arrangement. Each system was to consist of the rigid duct tubing in three headings junctioned together at the last open crosscut and exhausted at a common branch in the return air. Each heading was to have its own damper (or valve) so that air could be directed where it was most needed. The system was installed using both round and oval rigid duct ventilation tubing to minimize head loss and to allow proper ground clearance for mining machinery. Two fans in parallel were used to exhaust three headings. By adjusting the valves at each heading, up to 18.0 kcfm (9.36 cu m per sec) could be exhausted from one heading and still keep the methane level controlled in the other two headings. The manifold exhaust system has proven to be an efficient, long lasting ventilation system at the Alchem Mine. It has reduced the dust and noise exposure levels at the working faces while keeping the methane level under control.

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. "The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. In planning for the future, Nkana Division deepened the Mindola sub-vertical shaft which was commissioned in 1994 in order to access the 30 Mt of ore between 1274 and 1570 m levels. The Nkana Synclinorium which is estimated to contain 250 Mt of ore is being accessed from the vicinity of Central Shaft. These areas are being planned with the intention of maximizing the use of computers in geological modelling and mine design so as to overcome the inadequacies of manual planning techniques. As a result, there is an increased demand for quality output from the computerized mine planning system the division has been developing over the last few years. A new workstation comprising the Hewlett Packard HP 71 51100 MHz and a CRX graphics monitor was acquired in 1995 together with the LYNX (version 3.09 and version 4.0) Mine Modelling System. Currently the workstation is being used for geological modelling and mine design for the Zerofold at Central Shaft and the Mindola mining at depth project. AutoCAD and Mine Works Planner have been added to the sys- tem configuration. Mine Works Planner is likely to replace Lo- tus123 for mine scheduling tasks. Computer applications in the area of mine planning at Nkana has led to considerable time savings and improved efficiency in areas formerly performed manually and has allowed speedy processing of data that would otherwise have proved too time consuming. Nevertheless, a lot of work still needs to be done in the areas of geostatistics, stope design and financial modelling of mining options. For the foreseeable future computer based planning will operate parallel to manual methods until such a time as sufficient personnel are proficient in the use of computer systems. This paper describes the program of computerization at Nkana Division, reviews current applications and the benefits and experience gained and discusses the promise of current and future developments.

"The second survey of global copper leaching operations has been completed, the data published in 1998 has been updated. A survey questionnaire was sent to 40 identified copper leach operations around the world including those leach properties still in operation that responded to the 1998 survey. This paper lists the results of 26 operations that responded to the survey. Selected information from the survey is represented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION Copper leaching was first performed by truck dumping huge monolithic stockpiles of ore and flooding the surface with leach solution or lixiviant with little understanding to the parameters that support optimum recovery of the metal. Heap leaching has evolved into a controlled process whereby a complex low grade ore is stacked in shallow lifts (under 10 m in most cases). The ore is usually crushed and agglomerated, conveyor stacked on an engineered containment system (leach pad) and irrigated in a controlled manner. The lixiviant chemistry is designed to extract the optimum amount of metal from the ore. At first glance, heap leaching appears to be simple in nature. In fact, it is a very complex process. A plethora of technologies such as material handling, environmental control, analytical techniques, solution chemistry, hydrology and many others contribute to the design and operation of a heap leach. Heap leaching requires an inter-disciplinary approach between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists. Many operational factors affect heap leaching. The process must address climatic factors, flexible operation, quality control before and after leaching, physical characteristics of the ore, geology, mineralogy, reagent consumption, solution application rate and methods (wobblers or emitters), particle size, and favorable conditions for bacterial growth and survival. Predicting, troubleshooting, and optimization of leach recovery is a significant challenge when considering the number of variables involved and their interactions The survey updates many of these key operating parameters to the current state of the art. It should provide the reader an excellent benchmarking summary of these factors on a site-by-site basis."

The trends in dust exposure levels and longwall production over the last 20 years were examined. The study was conducted for nine major underground coal mining states: Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio. Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. The dust exposure and shift production data were obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Trends were identified and analyzed for the headgate, tailgate, jack setter and shearer operator positions. The relationships between average scam height and dust exposure levels as well as the percentage of dust samples exceeding the dust standard for the four occupations were examined. The concentration to production ratio, a better indicator of the success of dust control measures, was calculated for the 20-Year period. The data show that, in general, dust exposures over the last two decades hare decreased. However, it appears that much of the decrease was in states that had significantly high dust exposure levels (such as Alabama and Utah), while for states such as Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, the decrease was not as dramatic. Major reductions were made in the period starting in 1982, when a host of longwall dust control techniques was introduced. However, nearly 35% of jack setter and shearer operator dust exposures were still above 2 mg/m3 in 1990, with nearly 20% of tailgate operator exposures and 8% of headgate operator exposures being above the federal standard. The concentration/production ratio has shown a remarkable decrease since 1981. This indicates that long wall operators have been able to meet increased production as well as, to a large extent, control chest production at the face. An analysis of the relationship between average seam height and dust concentration for the years 1984 and 1990 shows that while in 1984, the dust concentration could be correlated to seam height, in 1990 the relationship was less definitive. This indicates that technological factors may be more important than seam height.

SCOTT COULTER: Our second speaker today is Brian Flintoff. Brian graduated from the University of Alberta in 1973 with a master's of science degree and worked as a project metallurgist at Brenda Mines until 1977. He returned to the University of Alberta in late 1977 to work on his Ph.D. and later joined the faculty of engineering in 1980, leaving in 1988 to rejoin Brenda in the newly formed process technology division. In 1998 he left Svedala-Brenda to take a position with Simons International's newly formed enterprise development services group. His topic today is "People: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." INTRODUCTION BRIAN FLINTOFF: Historically, the mining industry has relied on the people within a corporation to get things done. The culture of most companies was one of a slow but sure development of people, processes, equipment, and technology. Many of the larger companies supported in-house engineering and research organizations. However, the metal market pressures of the 1980s and the emergence of the global economy in the late '80s and early '90s put enormous financial pressures on the industry. As the old adage says, "necessity is the mother of invention," and the mining industry, like many others, has undergone a transformation. A cornerstone element of the transformation was the downsizing (or right-sizing) that was calculated to "trim the fat" from the capital and operating budgets. The goal was and is to find the highest sustainable operating profit.' While I'm sure one can find examples of losers (e.g., those who can be classified as suffering from corporate anorexia or institutional Alzheimer's) in such business reengineering efforts, there is little doubt that, on the whole, the transformation has been successful. The reality that now faces mill management is "How to do more with less?" At the risk of oversimplifying, one can look at this on two levels:

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

M. Gershon The article is an excellent one, providing a basis for the conduct of the major tasks in underground mine planning and scheduling. I object to only one word. Since that word is featured in the title, it is a strong objection. The word used erroneously is optimization. There is no optimization performed in the article. By definition, an optimization is an approach that yields the best of all possible solutions. We can limit this definition to its narrowest sense, the optimization techniques of operations research such as linear programming, or broaden it to include less sophisticated search procedures that find the best mine plan or schedule. No such claim is made in the article. No optimization of any kind is performed. The major tool used is a simulation, which, in truth, is probably more appropriate for this problem than any optimization. But simulation does not optimize. It only allows for quick evaluation of many options, leading to the selection of the best plan "of those tried," not "of all possible plans." This article, of course, is not the first mining paper to make this error. It seems that the word optimization is used more to impress people than to refer to any act of optimizing. It is used in a way that implies "try to optimize"or "come close to optimize," but not to really do it. It is usually appropriate to quietly ignore this error. But when Dr. Chatterjee, who has done so much good work in true optimization projects and whose work I have come to admire, makes such an error, it is time to publicly dispute it. Having discussed this very point with him in the past, I am sure that he will agree. If he can support this position in his response, perhaps people will start to listen and we can reduce the number of false claims of optimization. This should be easy for him in this case since the approach he used, simulation, is the more appropriate one anyway.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE "Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight." Thus sang David three thousand years ago, in tacit acceptance of the condition of war, and in praise of the exceptional military skills with which this warrior king of Israel was endowed. He had cause to exult, for he had consolidated King Saul's conquests and added new ones of his own, not least of which was the capture of Jerusalem. David revealed in this operation that his mastery of the military arts embraced not only the weaponry and tactics of his day, but also strategy and that oldest of intelligence techniques: spies. The Jebusites, who built Jerusalem, had encompassed the city with the first of its many walls, but had neglected to incorporate the sole reliable water supply within its perimeter. This was Ain Gihon, today called the Fountain of the Virgin, which bubbled out on the east slope of Mount Ophel, one of the ridges on which Jerusalem was built, and drained eastward into the Kidron Valley. Water was brought into the city in the traditional manner: by women descending the stony trail outside the wall to fill their jars at the spring. But this essential daily activity was vulnerable to interruption by a hostile force outside the walls. To remedy this weakness, the Jebusites had driven a gallery from the spring a short distance into the water-bearing limestone under the city, and there cut a small collecting basin in the rock, a common way to develop springs throughout this arid region. But then the Jebusites dug a small vertical shaft from the roof of the gallery above the cistern upward about 15 m. From the upper end of this shaft, they constructed a narrow inclined tunnel with rock-cut steps leading up to the city streets. Thus the water supply could be reached even in time of siege.

Ferrochromium produced by smelting chromite ores is an important alloying component in the steel industry. Ore, coke and fluxes are mixed and reacted in an arc furnace for a smelting process of ferrochromium. In ad-dition to this process, pre-reduction of chromite ore with carbon is an important industrial process. In all these processes, the mechanism and kinetics of reduction of chromite with carbon play an important role. In this study, the reduction of Turkish chromite ore with carbon was investigated. Chromite and carbon were ground to three different particle size groups. Chromite was mixed with carbon in stoichiometric and excess ratios. The samples were reduced under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1,200° and 1,350°C. The formed phases and alloy compositions of reduced chromite samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Experimental results showed that the degree of reduction and the reduction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size. The highest degree of reduction, 61.4%, was obtained at 1,350°C. The reduction took place in three stages: Stage 1: transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and formation of metallic nuclei, Stage 2: formation of metallic crust around the particles and Stage 3: growth of the metallic crust and coalescence of the metallic phase.

Kinetic models are the most important tool for predicting and evaluating the performance of flotation circuits. Gilsonite is a natural fossil resource similar to an oil asphalt, high in asphaltenes. Here, in order to determine the kinetic order and flotation rate of a gilsonite sample, flotation experiments were carried out in both rougher and cleaner stages. Experiments were conducted using the combinations of oil–MIBC and gas oil–pine oil, with one test without collector and frother. Five kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from the flotation tests using MATLAB software. Statistical analysis showed that the results of the experiment with oil–MIBC were highly in compliance with all models. Kinetic constants (k) were calculated as 0.1548 (s−1 ) and 0.0450 (s−1 ) for rougher and cleaner stages, respectively. Rougher and cleaner tests without collector and frother also matched all models well (R2 > 0.98), with k values of 0.2163 (s−1 ) and 0.284 (s−1 ), respectively. The relationship between flotation rate constant, maximum combustible recovery, and particle size showed that the maximum flotation combustible recovery and flotation rate were obtained in the size range of −250 + 106 μm in the rougher and cleaner stages. The combustible recovery and flotation rate were higher in the rougher flotation process than in the cleaner stage.

Kinetic constants (k) were calculated as 0.1548 (s−1 ) and 0.0450 (s−1 ) for rougher and cleaner stages, respectively. Rougher and cleaner tests without collector and frother also matched all models well (R2 > 0.98), with k values of 0.2163 (s−1 ) and 0.284 (s−1 ), respectively. The relationship between flotation rate constant, maximum combustible recovery, and particle size showed that the maximum flotation combustible recovery and flotation rate were obtained in the size range of −250 + 106 μm in the rougher and cleaner stages. The combustible recovery and flotation rate were higher in the rougher flotation process than in the cleaner stage.

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. The mine disaster last November in northern West Virginia has compelled the coal mining industry to take a closer look at the methods of transporting and applying rockdust. The USBM has indicated they would like to see a minimum of 80% incombustble in the back entries and want rockdust to be maintained to within 40 feet of the face at all times. With today's high rate of advance of mining machines it will be necessary to apply dust in the immediate returns continuously and the working places mutt have dust applied during the operating shift. The inspectors have become more demanding in requiring clean-up of coal and coal dust in the working place before rockdust is applied and are insisting on better clean-up and better rockdust applications along belt conveyors. Maintaining a constant application of rockdust in the back entries can be done with a Trickle-Duster. The machine is designed with hopper capacities of either 400 or 1,000 pounds of dust. The discharge rate of dust being fed through 1-1/2 inch diameter hose can be adjusted from 1/2 to 5 pounds per minute. The hose is extended into the return through the last open breakthrough and the return air carries the rockdust along w th the coal dust, depositing them uniformly on rib, roof and bottom.

A master composite (Master Comp) sample was prepared from three pegmatite zones from the Zoro Dyke D1 for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample that was crushed to approximately P80 = 600 μm. The sample consists of spodumene (10.5 percent), quartz (29.3 percent), plagioclase (29.0 percent), K-feldspars (21.3 percent), micas (5.1 percent), tourmaline (2.9 percent) and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1 percent). Liberation of spodumene (88 percent) and gangue minerals, including quartz (89 percent), feldspars (94 percent) and micas (83 percent), is very good at this P80 . The average lithium (Li) concentration is 3.7 percent in spodumene, 2,196 ppm in micas, 1,001 ppm in tourmaline and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Spodumene accounts for 96 percent of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other Li carriers. The HLS was conducted on a subsample that was crushed to smaller than 6.4 mm, with the smaller than 600 µm fraction removed from this test. The HLS results indicate it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate, with close to 6 percent Li2O, after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.
