Surface mining of multiple seams by mountaintop removal and contour mining is complex in Appalachia. Arch of West Virginia, a division of Apogee Coal, has made its operations state-of-the-art to cope with this challenge. Arch of West Virginia moved into the heart of coal mining in Appalachia when Arch Mineral acquired coal reserves and coal operations in the southern West Virginia counties of Logan and Wyoming. These reserves were initially developed at the turn of the century as underground operations. Today, though, they are mined using mountaintop removal and contour mining. The steep slopes in the mountains of Appalachia generated a method of mining referred to as contour mining. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, contour mining was introduced at these operations using front-end loaders with bucket capacities of more than 7 m3 (10 cu yd) that could load 45-t (50-ton) end-dump trucks.

The Fabian ore body near Malmberget, Sweden, has an ore reserve of 5 Mt of predominately low grade iron ore, containing 40-55% Fe. Mining began in 1971 with a new method called slot block caving. About 2 Mt were mined, but poor fragmentation resulted in too much secondary blasting. This decreased mucking efficiency to such an extent that the method was abandoned after only 40% of the ore volume had been mined. At this stage a large stope (180 x 30 x 100 m) had been excavated. Although the exposed area was quite large, no caving action occurred in the hanging wall or in the ceiling. LKAB decided in 1977 to introduce sublevel stoping using 105-mm-diam holes. This was the first time large diameter holes were used underground in Sweden. The method had been evaluated in collaboration with the University of Luleå (LuH), the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation (SveDeFo), and the Swedish Mining Research Foundation.

Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. (KACC) had been discharging spent bauxite-generally referred to as red mud-into the Mississippi River for almost 20 years when, in 1972, it agreed to store the waste solids on land. KACC decided to utilize a DREW system (decantation, drainage, and evaporation of water) where the spent bauxite is deposited in a large drying bed, surrounded by a 9-m-high levee. At the bottom of the bed, corrugated, perforated plastic pipe is encased in filter sand. The company built one DREW bed at Gramercy, LA, in 1973 and a second at Baton Rouge in 1974 using draglines, tractors, and rubber-tired scrapers. When a third bed was needed in 1977, the estimated construction cost using draglines was judged too high and KACC personnel began searching for a better, less expensive method for constructing the levee. A bucket-wheel excavator and conveyor system was selected and has proved to be less costly than more traditional earth-moving systems.

It is agreed in mining and regulatory circles that a safe and healthy working environment for underground miners is the major challenge for mine operators. Underground mine ventilation is complex. And it is becoming even more difficult as mines become larger, deeper and more complicated. At the Seventh US Mine Ventilaton Symposium, a group of mine ventilation experts from industry, government and academia attempted to solve some of the problems in ventilating underground mines. The meeting, sponsored by the Underground Ventilation Committee of SME and the University of Kentucky, was held in Lexington, KY June 5-7, 1995. Andrzej M. Wala, symposium chairman, commented that previous mine ventilation symposiums have focused mainly on work in North America. The 1995 symposium, however, broadened its borders to include several international papers. Of the 77 papers presented and bound into the Proceedings volume, 25 are from operations and research centers outside of the United States and Canada.

The Rogers Pass Project in British Columbia has involved the construction of two railway tunnels totalling 16.6 km and a 345 m deep shaft. Systematic geological mapping was carried out at four headings during construction. The paper discusses the procedures used to record the geology, structure, rock mass characteristics and excavation performance. Coded data from the geological mapping and shift inspector reports was entered into a computer data base. The rock mass quality was evaluated for both the Geomechanics and Q classification systems. Continuous computer generated graphic logs were produced showing the excavated perimeter map, geological parameters, installed support and construction activities. The tunnel logs were updated on daily basis and used during construction by project staff for evaluating support requirements and monitoring excavation progress. The specific requirements, difficulties and advantages in mapping tunnels using a computer based system are compared to those of a conventionally mapped tunnel excavation with hand drafted tunnel logs.

INTRODUCTION Background Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities of the world. As many as 33 million people live in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures although the city occupies only 0.6% of the area of the country. The network of Metropolitan Expressways serves as a major artery for daily physical distribution in Tokyo. The Central Circular Route of the Metropolitan Expressway (MECCR) is located innermost among the three circular routes in Tokyo (Figure 1). Once completed, MECCR is expected to drastically mitigate traffic congestion in the central Tokyo area and provide drivers wider varieties of options in route selection. Alleviating congestion is estimated to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The eastern and northern sections and part of the western section of MECCR have been completed with the total length reaching 33 km. The western section will be extended southward by approximately 4 km in the spring of 2010. An 11-km-long western section of MECCR that is currently being constructed is composed mostly of tunnels. A large number of power supply, gas supply, telephone, drinking water and sewerage pipes have been placed under the Yamatedori avenue along which MECCR is being constructed. The shield tunneling method has therefore been adopted for constructing tunnels along the route. The method involves the advancement of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the ground simultaneously assembling segmental rings within the shield. The method not only enables the building of highway tunnels more quickly and efficiently than other methods but also minimizes the effects of construction work on the surrounding area and the environment. Constructing the tunnel using the conventional cut-and-cover method might have required large amounts of time and cost because relocating the numerous objects buried under the Yamatedori avenue might have been necessary during tunnel construction. It was also considered desirable to place the tunnel at a depth of 30 m or more from surface to prevent tunnel construction from adversely affecting railways because the tunnel was expected to cross eleven railways and subways. This is one of the reasons for selecting shield tunneling as an effective method. The shield tunneling method was finally adopted for a length of 7 km in the 11-km western section of MECCR. The shield tunneling method was also employed in the Ohashi Tunnel located southernmost in the 11-km western section of MECCR. This paper describes the construction of the Ohashi Shield Tunnel.

Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? "Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is PT Freeport Indonesia's (PTFI) newest operation. Production at the mine began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine produces 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) using mechanized block cave mining methods. The DOZ Mine has several major improvements when compared with previous block cave mines in the district. It has an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system. PTFI's copper and gold mining complex is located in the Ertsberg mining district in Irian Jaya, Indonesia (Fig. 1). The Ertsberg district is located in the Sudirman Mountains at elevations from 3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,700 ft) above sea level. The topography is extremely rugged and rainfall in the mine area averages 3,000 mm/a (118 in./year). Freeport began production in the district in 1972 when the mill began processing ore from the Ertsberg openpit. Underground mining began in 1980 when the Gunung Bijih Timur-Ertsberg East (GBT) Mine was brought online using block caving methods. In 1991, the GBT Mine reached a maximum production rate of 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). Ore from the mine was exhausted in 1994. The Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) was brought into production in 1994. It, too, used block caving methods and had a design rate of 10 kt/d (11,000 stpd). The IOZ is currently producing at a rate of 21 kt/ d (23,000 stpd). The DOZ was discovered in the mid-1980s by deep drilling from the GBT. The GBT, IOZ and DOZ deposits are all situated in the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). In 1993, the first of several studies was completed that indicated that portions of the DOZ Mine could be economically mined using block caving methods. Limited development was started in 1995. Full-scale development and construction began in late 1997. The crusher and conveying system began operating during the first quarter 2000. The first of two main exhaust shafts has been com¬missioned, along with three of the four new main fans. The second exhaust shaft and fourth main fan will be in service by the end of 2001. Undercutting and production began in September 2000. The DOZ Mine will reach its design production rate of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) in 2003. A study is under way to determine if an ultimate production rate of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd) is feasible.

"Surface subsidence caused by underground room-and-pillar mining operations and by solution mining operations have been studied separately but never in combination. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Using Salt_Subsid, a subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute, and ArcGIS, Esri's mapping platform, researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. Project backgroundFMC Minerals has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, WY, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 488 m (1,600 ft). Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed.The location from which the trona is removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations are important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found between surface subsidence measurements and the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find relationships between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured surface subsidence and solution mining production using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI, Clarks Summit, PA) to estimate the location, size and shape of the solution mining cavern. This study would determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by secondary solution mining activities. The subsidence and production data sets used in this study were collected over a seven-year period from 2008 through 2014."

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. These innovations are the focus of this paper."

The alkalic igneous province of Montana consists of centers of laccolithic and stock-like intrusive complexes with associated sills, dikes, and breccia pipes (e.g., Judith, Highwood, Little Belt Mts.); isolated plug-like mafic bodies (e.g., Smokey and Eagle Buttes); and clusters of kimberlitic diatremes and ultrabasic dike swarms (Missouri River Breaks). The province extends in a belt throughout central Montana from the North Absaroka Range in the south to the Sweetgrass Hills on the Canadian border. Intrusive activity ranged in age from Late Cretaceous to late Miocene, peaking at about 50 m.y, ago. Diverse types of significant epithermal gold mineralization occur at many of the laccolithic centers. This mineralization took place in large part during the waning stages of, or following, igneous activity. Large remnant travertine blankets in the region attest to comparatively recent hydrothermal activity. The quartz-pyrite-gold mineralization ranges from igneous- hosted stockworks or fracture sets (Zortman-Landusky and Neihart districts) and breccia pipes (North Moccasin Mts.) to replacement zones in flanking and upwarped Madison Group limestone (Gilt Edge and Kendall districts). The latter are mostly localized by intraformational solution breccias in the upper Madison, notably near porphyry contacts. Gold mineralization in the province was accompanied by varying amounts of silver, base metals, sulfosalts, and tellurides, with quartz, fluorite, carbonate, and barite and gangue. Gold occurs as auriferous pyrite, sylvanite, or in native form. Since the 1880's, primary gold production from numerous scattered deposits in the Judith, Moccasin, and Little Rocky Mountains, along with byproduct gold from the Neihart silver district (Little Belt Mountain), has totalled around 2 million oz. The major deposits were in the 1-2 million ton range at an average gold tenor of 0.3-0.6 oz per ton. Most of the ore was mixed oxide or carbonaceous sulfide ore and was treated either by amalgamation or by roasting-cyanidation. Current activity includes heap-leach operations on bulk- tonnage low-grade (approximately 0.03 oz per ton) ores at Zortman-Landusky, and several small-scale, experimental leach or mining operations on carbonaceous replacement ores, as in the Kendall district and Spotted Horse mine. Current exploration efforts for gold are focused not only in the old established districts, but also in and around other alkalic centers, which have been unproductive to date, such as the Crazy Mountains, Sweetgrass Hills, and Bearpaw Mountains. Target concepts in these efforts are porphyry-hosted stockwork or disseminated gold ores and Carlin-type replacement lodes in the flanking Madison or other favorable carbonate units.

In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today's common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

"The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

I. INTRODUCTION During the course of our activities in assisting mining companies, we have had access to the monitoring results for personnel from a large number of uranium mines. The results differ greatly from one mine to another. One of our objectives has been to discover the origin of these differences. It is evident that they are largely due to variations in the geological context, to mining methods, and to the organization of the work ; but we also found that the rigor with which measures are implemented to prevent the personnel from being exposed to radiations is also a cause. In order to advise mining operators effectively, we have asked ourselves the following question Given the dosimetric results of a mining site, how can it be known - if occupational exposure has been reduced to the lowest possible level (dose optimization principle recommended by the ICRP) ; - if the exposures were justified, which would not necessarily be the case following a questionable choice of the mining method, for instance, or a lack of efficiency in the maintenance and repairs of ventilation apparatus or even an excess of radiation protection. It is necessary to establish some criteria, while taking into consideration the specific conditions for each mine, in order to determine whether a mining company is adequately implementing radiation protection procedures. This need led us to attempt a modelization of the occupational exposures of uranium miners ; the preliminary phase is presented here. Although voluntarily still very basic, this model makes it possible to demonstrate the role of certain dynamic or passive variables. Moreover, the model presents the concept of specific irradiation of a mining site equal to the collective dose received per ton of uranium metal supplied to the uranium mill. The specific irradiation can therefore be used to indicate the effectiveness of radiation protection procedures at a given mining site. This model can be used for - previsional exposure studies based on the use of data gathered at each site, making it possible to compare various work methods and to determine prevention means ; - qualification of "radiation protection" procedures at a mining site ; - detection of unjustified exposures ; - research of ways to reduce inevitable exposures. 2. DETRIMENT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN EXPOSURE DISTRIBUTION Respecting exposure limits ensures that delayed stochastic effects are the only health risks to workers. If the hypothesis of linearity in the dose-effect relationship is applied, the detriment to a group of workers is proportional to the sum of exposure for all the workers, or the collective exposure usually expressed as man x rem. On this point the linearity of effects hypothesis makes it possible to consider that two different standard deviation distributions having the same mean value are equivalent. It would be possible, then, to reduce the standard deviation by changing the distribution of workers at the various working places without changing the mean exposure value. In other words, without taking into consideration the practical implications, individual limits can be respected by rotating the personnel or by reducing the individual working period which would be compensated by increasing the number of workers. The collective dose would remain the same, which would justify the use of the concept of collective exposure. 3. "RADIATION PROTECTION" QUALITY INDEX AT VARIOUS MINING SITES Each mining site is responsible for its own collective dose, but it is also responsible for producing a certain amount of uranium metal in the ore sent to the uranium mill. These two quantities must be brought together in order to establish the "radiation protection" quality index of a mining site. This quality index, called-specific irradiation (Ir) is expressed in rem.ton -1 for external irradiation, in mJoule.ton-1 for inhaled [a]-energy, and in Ci.ton -1 for inhaled radon *. The specific irradiation represents the health hazard which must be associated to the extraction of one ton of uranium metal. Figures la and lb present a system of coordinates for which the axis of the abscisses is graduated in tons of U metal and the axis of the ordinates is graduated in units of collective exposures. In the EEC, the regulation is based on the measurement of the amounts of radon 222 inhaled.

Introduction A major uncertainty in assessing the potential for heap-and dump-leach projects is how to determine the extraction-rate curve for the recovery of the mineral values from coarse ore. Such material could either be run-of-mine (ROM) or primary crushed ore. The problem with field testing coarse ore, especially for new projects, is the large scale and extended leach times needed to accurately determine the final extraction-rate curve. At least 5 x 103 to 5 x 104 t of representative ROM ore are typically required for a copper test heap, and much more is often used. Kennecott, for example, recently constructed a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) ROM test heap at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. In such coarse ore operations, the ultimate level of extraction will require a leach cycle that can extend from several months to a few years. Quite often, project development schedules do not provide the luxury of mining such large quantities of material or running such long tests. Instead, test data are usually limited to results from column leach studies on relatively fine ore, often with a top size that does not exceed 25 mm. Maximum leach times are also short, typically less than a year before an initial decision is needed on project viability. Proposed method One approach to estimating the recovery from a coarse ore leach is to assume that the leach solution will have some ultimate penetration distance into the rock. Then, the final level of mineral extraction in this "leached rim" will equal the ultimate level of extraction identified in various testing programs. Obviously, if the radius of a given rock fragment is less than the penetration distance, that fragment will be fully leached at the end of the operation. With larger rock sizes, the percent recovery will fall off as the size increases and the fraction of unpenetrated rock mass increases. Such an approach sounds simple but is likely to be complex when applied to a real project. For example, the penetration distance will be a function of both the rock characteristics and the effective length of the leach cycle. The important rock characteristics include rock porosity, the degree of internal fracturing and the mode of mineral occurrence. With regard to the latter, penetration is likely to be greater if the leachable mineralization occurs on fracture surfaces or in veinlets, as opposed to fine grains uniformly disseminated throughout the rock mass. An estimate of penetration distance may be derived from column or heap tests by noting the depth of solution penetration into the larger rock fragments after three, six and 12 months of leaching. While the penetration rate is ore specific, something on the order of 10 to 20 mm/y may be appropriate for competent, primary copper (chalcopyrite) ore. For gold in tight quartz, the rate may be about the same. Copper oxide ores and gold that is hosted in a more porous rock matrix are likely to have penetration rates that are at least two to three times higher, and an even higher rate should be appropriate for uranium hosted in sandstone. As noted above, the length of the effective leach cycle is likely to be measured in years. On this basis, the ultimate penetration distance (dp) would vary from less than 50 to several 100 mm when a particular ore is leached to exhaustion. Several sets of mathematical manipulations are necessary to convert a rock size distribution and corresponding value of dp into an estimated extraction-rate curve. The first step is to break the ROM size distribution down into intervals and then calculate the radius for the mean rock size in each interval. This is shown in Table 1 for rock sizes up to 1.75 m (about 6 ft) in diameter. The next step is to calculate the volume of unleached core and the fraction of rock that is leached. This is done for the following three values of dp: 25, 100 and 250 mm. Results are shown in Table 2. The third step is to select the ultimate level of recovery that will be achieved in the fraction of material that is effectively leached, i.e., the outer zone that is penetrated by the leach solution. The sorptive and impervious nature of clay materials was recognized long before modem technology allowed us to understand the physiochemistry of clays. In Cyprus, around 5000 BC, sorbent clays were used for fulling woolen cloth. One of the earliest recorded uses of clays as an impervious liner was more than 3200 years ago in the construction of a bitumen-sand-gravel-clay liner built along the embankment of the Tigris River at Assur. Today one of the most common applications for clay minerals in the environmental industry is for use as impermeable barriers to fluid transport. Clay minerals are fine in particle size and thus have large surface areas, which, as a result of intermolecular forces and ionic substitutions, make them excellent materials for both ion exchange and ion sorption. Therefore it was logical to consider certain clay materials for applications in the environmental industry, where they can act as physical and chemical traps for potential contaminants. Certain bentonites have historically been used as sealants for fluids (Grim, 1962), and other clays have been used as sorbents for both water and oil (Haden, Jr., 1972). Prior to the 1980s, disposal of the nation's municipal, commercial, chemical, and nuclear wastes was largely indiscriminate and poorly regulated. This created environmental pollution problems, especially with respect to groundwater contamination. Promulgation of federal regulations like the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA - commonly known as Superfund) have forced a more careful and costly approach to waste disposal. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the government body charged with enforcing and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing toxic waste production, storage, and disposal. Widespread application of geotechnology to the design and construction of waste containment systems and to pollution remediation has become necessary due to such laws and because of increasing use of the subsurface environment for the disposal of hazardous wastes. In the United States nearly 1.8 kg of trash is disposed of per person per day, which amounts to nearly 181 Mt per year. This amount is more than double the waste produced in 1960, and these numbers are expected to continue to increase. Canada produces approximately 1.68 kg of waste per person per day. The EPA estimates that in the United States 64% of our garbage is landfilled, 18% recycled, and 18% incinerated. Even with continued increases in recycling and incineration efforts, the EPA projects that the United States will still need 82% of today's landfill capacity in the year 2000. Data on the exact number of landfills in the United States and Canada is conflicting in part because of changing definitions of what constitutes a landfill and because of inadequate record- keeping by some states and provinces. An estimate of the number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the United States in 1990 to 1991 ranged from 4 462 to 10 467 with an average estimate of 6 600. In Canada the number of MSW landfills reported varied from 5 493 in a 1982 survey to 1 766 reported in a 1991 National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) survey (Repa and Sheets, 1992b). A properly operated MSW landfill on average requires 1 hectare of land per year per 25 000 people (Coates, 198 1). In addition to MSW facilities, there are also waste disposal facilities needed for hazardous waste and low level and high level radioactive waste. In 1983, approximately 266 Mt of hazardous waste was generated in the United States, almost 50% of this by industrial production. About 68% of the hazardous waste generated in the United States and Canada and almost 50% generated in Europe are still landfilled (Egger, 1987). In 1985, approximately 51 000 m3 of commercially produced low level radioactive waste was disposed of in radioactive waste disposal sites across the United States (Jungling and Greeves, 1989). By 1987, the US defense program had produced approximately 10 000 t of high level nuclear waste. In addition, there were approximately 14 000 t of spent fuel assemblies from commercial nuclear power plants in temporary storage; the amount is expected to nearly triple by the year 2000. Presently most commercial spent fuel assemblies are stored in water-filled pools at nuclear power plants. Defense waste is stored on federal reservations in surface and underground steel tanks (Anon., 1987). Under federal law nearly all waste disposal and containment sites are required to have a liner or barrier and a cover system design that meets federal- or state-approved hydraulic conductivity requirements for the type of waste that the site will receive. When approved materials, necessary for constructing the waste containment structure, are not available on site, one of the most economical ways to meet these requirements is through the use of clay, soil/clay, or clay/geotextile materials. In a 1991 survey by NSWMA of its members and other select private sector facilities, 81% of the surveyed landfills had some type of liner system. About 75% of these liners were clay materials (either recompacted or natural). The remaining 30% were using flexible membrane liners as part of a liner system. Clay liner materials are most commonly used in the South, Midwest, West-central, and South-central regions of the United States. About 93% of the landfill facilities had closure plans, and of these 91 % were using clay materials in some way for the final cover material (Repa and Sheets, 1992a). Waste barriers and containment structures take several basic forms, and they are used in a variety of different applications: 1) cutoff walls, 2) soil or soil/clay-admix liners, 3) geosynthetic bentonite-clay/geotextile membranes, 4) radioactive waste containment barriers, and 5) synthetic geomembranes. This chapter will discuss the first four of these categories. The field of synthetic geomembranes, although a related topic, is beyond the scope of

Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite. The word glauconite is derived from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was mined and marketed as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of manufactured fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to a decline in the use of greensand in agriculture. The material has since been recognized as useful in water treatment. Unfortunately, despite large reserves and world- wide distribution, glauconite has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This is probably due mostly to a paucity of research on its potential commercial uses. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and a generally low potash content (viz., less than 8%), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of as much as 22.5 kg/m2 were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 4.5 to 11 kg/m2 (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of its slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as poison, burning, or black marls. The availability of higher grade potash salts from other mineral sources and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the latter 1800s. During the mid-1800s the greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000/y. Toward the end of the century, however, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000 in value. By 19 10 there were only six or eight greensand producers grossing less than $5,000/y each (Tyler, 1934). There was a brief revival of the US industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the latter 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was used in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s it was used for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base exchange properties of glauconite were recognized for water treatment and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. Mansfield (1922) does not mention base exchange even though this phenomenon was known in 1916 or earlier. From 1916 through 1922 several patents for the use of glauconite as a water softening agent were granted. A method was also patented for treating greensand to improve it for water softening and ready regeneration with common sodium chloride brine (Borrowman, 1920, Spencer, 1924, Kriegsheim and Vaughan, 1930). Treated glauconite, on contact with water containing magnesia or lime, takes up magnesium or calcium ions and releases sodium ions. This exchange is limited to the outer surface of glauconite grains, and when all the surfaces have absorbed their capacity, the grains must be regenerated. Regeneration, simply stated, consists of treating or backwashing the glauconite with a sodium chloride solution, which replaces the hard water elements with sodium, thus reviving the glauconite. The process has become more sophisticated due to competition among companies in the water softening business. Greensand products for water softening generally consisted of several different grades distinguished by the particular treatment the glauconite was given during processing. The standard greensand water softener was produced from natural glauconite that was only washed and classified. Its characteristics for water softening are given in [Table 1].

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem.
