INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

In order to maintain higher grinding efficiency in tumbling mills the mill interior and dynamics must be known. For this purpose, several different types of non-intrusive methods have been proposed and are being tried in the industry. We have made an effort to develop a diagnostic tool based on vibration signal. Here we discus results of our experiments pertaining to ball as well as SAG mill. In each case, a triaxial accelerometer was used to capture mechanical vibration generated due to the tumbling action of the charge. The vibration signal was transmitted to a remotely placed computer and the signals were analyzed by standard signal processing technique. In case of a ball mill (5m diameter), qualitative mill information could be obtained by correlating the vibration signal to feed rate and mill filling. An effort was also made to identify different motion characteristic of the charge by analyzing its vibration signal. In case of the SAG mill (10m diameter), liner wear was estimated by comparing the vibration signal emitting out of a freshly lined mill with that of a worn out mill.

A rigorous horizontal drilling and chemical grouting program was specified beneath the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101) section of Los Angeles Metrorail Contract C-311.Twin 6.67-m (22-ft.) diameter starter tunnels were to be conventionally mined through amixed alluvial and bedrock face consisting of silty sand, gravel, and weathered sandstone and siltstone of the Topanga Group. The contact between the alluvium and bedrock dipped toward the Crossover Excavation where the horizontal drilling and grouting operations were performed. The intent of this grouting program was to stabilize the mixed face to minimize ground loss and surface settlement, and to reduce groundwater inflow into the tunnel headings. Given the highly variable mixed face conditions, horizontal drilling up to 86 m (284 ft.) resulted in upward trending trajectories which likely followed the bedrock contact. Chemical grouting was performed in a primary, secondary and tertiary, three dimensional sequence. Evaluation of the primary and secondary grouting parameters indicated where tertiary grouting was required. Grouting pressures induced a small rock failure at the tunnel heading as well as increased stresses on the tiebacks of the excavation.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

Quintette Coal Limited (managed and 50% owned by Denison Mines Limited) operates an open pit coal mine located in northeastern British Columbia, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. (See Fig. l). Mining commenced in 1982. The mine currently produces 4.75 million tonnes of medium volatile bituminous coal per year from three pits (Mesa, Wolverine and Shikano), using a truck/ shovel operation. (See Fig. 2). Conveyors and trucks transport run-of-mine coal to the heavy media/froth flotation process plan t, where it is cleaned and loaded into rail cars for delivery to the Ridley Island port at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. All coal is sold to the Japanese steel industry under a long term contract. The coal seams mined at Quintette are contained in the Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation. Mineable seam thicknesses vary from 0.6 m to 10 m. The regional structure of the area is typical of foreland fold and thrust belts, with open to tight folds and imbricate thrust faulting. The range of structural features found in the three pits, and their effect on mining, forms the subject of this paper.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

Intensive coal cleaning usually necessitates fine grinding of the feed in order to liberate inorganic constituents from the surrounding organic matrix. This however adversely affects the ability of flotation techniques to beneficiate coal. Such difficulties are mainly attributed to the increase of particle population density, the decrease in capture efficiency, and the greater tendency of inorganic components to report with the froth. A three-pronged approach was adopted in an attempt to overcome these difficulties. The aggregative flotation technique was used to reduce particle population densities and improve capture, while unconventional spargers were used to generate a wide range of bubble sizes. Use of unagitated flotation columns allowed for the maintenance of countercurrent flows in both the recovery and washing sections. The combined effect of these parameters enabled the recovery of 92% of the carbon content of coal having an average particle size of 20.5 µ m, while rejecting 85% of the ash. This was accomplished using 2 kg of fuel oil per tonne of coal in a column 2 meters high operating at 2-3 tph/m3, a capacity which compares favourably with conventional cells.

The paper begins by describing an underhand cut-and-fill mining concept for a 50m thick, generally tabular though irregularly shaped orebody dipping at 30 degrees and occurring at a depth of between 2300 and 2700m in the Sudbury Basin. From this, the broad design requirements of a fill system are stated. Two and three-dimensional numerical models are then described which were built to evaluate the theoretical benefits of different types of fill reinforcement. Included in this evaluation are the effects of span, fill strength, fill tightness, as well as static and dynamic loading types. Results, supported by large-scale physical models, are presented to show the significance of reinforcement on stable, undermined fill performance. Finally the paper describes work which has been done to evaluate the suitability of so-called silicated cemented backfill. This system is, in principal, attractive for deep mining applications since transportation is in the "safe" hydraulic regime, while fill water run-off, segregation and shrinkage effects are potentially eliminated in the stopes. The results from various surface and underground trial pours are reported which substantiate the proposed use of this type of backfill at depth.

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Mining in Estonian oil shale deposit mainly takes place in the Ordovician, Keila-Kukruse aquifer. The aquifer is affected by mining and is fully dried out around the working mine areas (Perens and Savitski, 2008). The groundwater level is decreased down to 30 m, to the mine floor elevation using about 30 pumping stations (Lind, 2005). The pumping rate is very high - depending on the season, ranging from 10 up to 40 m3 per ton of produced oil shale (Reinsalu et al., 2006). The Estonian oil Shale Company mined 15.5 million tons of oil shale in 2007 (Source: Estonian Oil Shale Company). In order to predict the effects, and avoid the social and environmental impacts, there is a need to continuously monitor the situation and run software simulations aiming at decreasing the pumping rate. This becomes even more important since the environmental taxes on usage of groundwater resources increase every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor groundwater level and quality, and develop a groundwater model for the overview of the situation during mine operations and also for a number of years after mine closure.

Brenda Mines, located 22 km Northwest of Peachland in British Columbia, Canada was an open pit copper- molybdenum mine which closed in 1990 after 20 years of operation. The primary concern in Brenda's tailings and waste rock drainage is molybdenum at a concentration of approximately 3 mg/L. The mine drainage is alkaline and contains little or none of the typically problematic heavy metals. Given that the waters downstream are used for municipal water supply and some irrigation, a discharge limit of 0.25 ma molybdenum was imposed with specific water quality guidelines in the receiving creek. A review of all existing and potential molybdenum removal methods was undertaken prior to mine closure. The chosen process is a two-step iron co-precipitation with clarification and sand filration at a slightly acidic pH. A 4,000 usgpm (912 m3/h) treatment plant was constructed and commissioned in 1998, at a cost of $10.5M. The successful removal of molybdenum from the drainage water is explained with details on some design innovations and operational challenges encountered during plant start-up. Investigated sludge disposal options are discussed although the long term disposal scenario has not yet been finalised.

In Italy at the moment there is a program which involves for the future the exploitation of two uranium mines which are now in the research stage. About one hundred and fifty workers are at present employed in those facilities. An health physics surveillance program is under way and has been designed to fulfill the requirements due to the future exploitation of the two mines. A complete evaluation of the total dose (external + internal) received by the workers will be given together with a detailed analyses of the technical methods employed for such evaluations. The external doses are evaluated on the basis of individual TLD dosimeters, while the evaluation of the internal doses is mainly due to an enviromental survillance program of the radon and radon daughter air concentration inside the mines. The criteria established for the assessment of the sampling procedures, sampling intervals and dose evaluation related to the radon doughter exposure are reported. The external dose received by the workers are lower than 0.2 m Sv~month and the internal exposure less than 6.4 IO-3 J.h.m-3 /year or using the old units 2 WLM/year.

Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

Computer-aided lithogeochemistry was used to "prospect" for stratabound scheelite (a tungsten ore) that occurs in many Precambrian clastic and chemical rocks, northeastern Brazil; The district is a metallogenic province covering about 5000km2. Exploration bedrock lithogeo-chemistry was applied at regional, local, and mine scales to identify regional tungsten trends and dispersion halos associated with economic tungsten mineralization. Regional coarse-mesh sampling (Cu,Mo,W) in 25km2 cells "found" all major mines and significant prospects using objective and cost objective computer mapping of bedrock geochemical data. The method is efficient ; of the 3600km2 study area only 9% of the original area remained after the initial pass. Of this area, the geo- chemically highest ranked (4%) cells contained the mines and prospects. Similar computer-aided treatment was applied to Cu,Mo,W,F, and Be lithogeochemical data from several mining concessions and prospects with outcropping and subsurface W mineralization. At a local scale out-cropping W mineralization was recognized at a distance of 500m. Fracture zones through which hydrothermal solutions traveled were identified; these were related to W mineralization at a depth of 200m.

This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

Cerro Colorado lies on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado SA (CMCC) operates Cerro Colorado. CMCC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is wholly owned by Rio Algom Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario. Cerro Colorado is located 120 km (75 miles)east of the port city of Iquique. Access is by 30 km (19 miles) of paved highway and 70 km (43 miles) of upgraded road. The mine site is located at an altitude of 2600 m (8531 ft) on a gentle west-sloping plateau adjacent to a deep canyon (Quebrada de Parca) to the north. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 5° to 30° C (41° to 86° F) with an average annual rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in.). The plateau is generally covered with 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) of Quatemary sand and gravel overlaying bedrock. In the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Colorado deposit, a semicircular embayment has been eroded into a steep canyon wall that cuts through the surface gravels to expose a considerable section of the underlying bedrock.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. INTRODUCTION Essentially three strategies are pursued in parallel for protecting the underground working force in mining against the consequences of methane ignitions which might lead to explosions: • Sufficient ventilation for avoiding the formation of explosive methane-air mixtures. • Avoiding sources of ignition caused possibly by electrical equipment or friction. • Structural explosion protection for limiting explosion propagation to the farthest-going extent for the case that methane is fired because of failing of the above preventive measures taken. The corresponding methods taken in mechanized roadheadings with point-attack roadheaders in German coalmining are subject of this paper. VENTILATION In ventilation of roadheading sites the following is to be considered in respect of methane control: • Sufficient air flows by volume being cycled to the heading face for diluting released methane to safe concentrations. • Sufficient local air velocities for effective mixing of methane and air in the whole heading site, in particular directly on the heading face and underneath the roof. Furthermore, ventilation needs to be laid out in a way that cut- ting does not result in health affecting dust exposure at any working place. Accordingly, the ventilation systems shown on Fig. 1 including primary and, if necessary, secondary auxiliary ventilation air ducts as well as dedusters, are used in roadheadings. This equipment is run according to the following principles: • If the roadheader is at standstill, the heading face is ventilated by the free air jet from the blowing duct closest to the face. In this operation phase the deduster is shut-down. • During cutting, the exhaust of the blowing air duct is automatically closed, and the deduster is taken into operation. The in- coming fresh air is now locally discharged via a lateral orifice, or distributed by Coanda-type ducts from the primary or secondary ventilation air duct. In this way, a stable dust wall not disturbed by the jet of the air duct is formed in front of the heading face. Only the ventilation air stream taken in by suction of the close-to-face deduster is passed through the inby zone of the heading face (over approx. 20 m). The clean exhaust of the deduster is dischayed to the roadway in some distance outby. Immediately at the heading face, methane accumulations possibly released by cutting are diluted by compressed-air jets from air-movers located near the roof which assure more rapid motion of the air without distuhing the dust wall. • In the zone of overlapping of primary and secondary duct and the deduster - that zone possibly is poorly ventilated during cutting - sufficient local air speed is assured by Coanda-type ducts or additional ventilation jets for avoiding methane accumulation. The regulations of the inspectorate specifies geometrical conditions to be met with these configurations of ventilation equipment. In-seam roadways are ventilated at rates > 0,5 m/s. For dedusters, present-day ventilation air flows are of 600-800 m+/ min. Ventilation monitoring and control is assured by units for measuring methane and ventilation air flows. If pre-set thresholds are exceeded or fallen short of, these measuring units shut-down - dependent on potential hazard - any not intrinsically safe electrical equipment in the roadheading, either totally or in limited zones. In addition, CO-measuring units near the roadway en- trance serve for early detection of mine fires. In spite of this ventilation layout and the equipment used and in spite of the water spray systems on the cutting head (discussed later in this paper) several cases of methane ignition and subsequent burning off (however, no explosions) have been recorded in the recent past. Therefore, the above-described ventilation is nowadays complemented in many cases by machine-mounted ventilation equipment for the immediate surroundings of the cutting head. Ventilation of the surroundings of the cutting head Investigations carried out subsequent to the above-mentioned gas ignitions have shown that the high ventilation air speed necessary for rapid dilution of methane could not permanently be arrived at in the following zones: • The direct zone of cutting, in particular during sumping. • The floor zone above the debris, predominantly below the cut- ting head. Accordingly, VOEST ALPINE-Bergtechnik, a producer of mining machinery, in cooperation with DMT developed for point- alttack roadheaders a novel machine-mounted ventilation equipment, the Jet-Block" (AERO SAFE Jet-Block) shown on Fig. 2. This system allows to ventilate the above-mentioned critical zones with high flow speeds. One AS Jet-Block is mounted on each side of the boom approx. 0.5 m behind the cutting head. The blocks discharge compressed-air jets with high energy from 10 nozzles per block into the hazardous zones (Fig. 3). Two nozzles of each jet block are tangentially oriented toward the upper circumference of the cutting head, the others are arranged fan-like with orientation to the heading face underneath the cutting head and the debris.
