The Eighteenth International Symposium on the Appli¬cation of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries was held in London from 26th to 30th March, 1984. The Symposium was organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy under the leadership of Mr M.J. Cahalan, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. The venue chosen was the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College of Science and Technology, in South Kensington. Some 300 delegates from all parts of the world attended, which included a delegation from South Africa that numbered about 20 persons. This extremely successful series of international meet¬ings was begun in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona, and has grown in strength and importance over the years. The arrange¬ment of the symposia is regulated by the International Council for APCOM under the Chairmanship of Professor R.V. Ramani (U.S.A.), the other current members being Professor J. Elbrond (Canada), Dr Thys B. Johnson (U.S.A.), Professor Young C. Kim (U.S.A.), Professor D.G. Krige (R.S.A.), Professor A.J. Lynch (Australia), Professor C.T. Shaw (U.K.), Dr A. Weiss (U.S.A.), and Professor F.L. Wilke (F.R.G.). There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and dedication of this small group of people and the excellent working relationship that exists between them are responsible for the continued success of APCOM meetings.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, held in Johannesburg on 29th June, 1982, the following leading members of the mining industry were elected to office for the 1982-1983 term: Mr W. Nisbet Vice President William Wouter Malan was born in Springs on 7th November, 1928, and was educated at the Springs High School and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c degree in mining engineering. Diamond Mines. Mr Nisbet became a consulting engineer of the Anglo American Corporation in 1972, and a deputy managing director of the Gold Division in 1974. George Young Kisbet was born in Benoni in 1923 and was educated at Pretoria Boys High and the University of the Witwatersrand. Due to the ultrafine particle size required for effective processing of chromite ores, dewatering of the concentrates presents a challenge. It is not uncommon for the ore to have elevated moisture contents even after dewatering, which must be reduced to required levels of between 8% and 10% by mass for further processing. Contact sorption drying has shown promise in test work on fine coal. This method was used to study the dewatering of chromite on a laboratory scale using 3 mm spherical activated alumina ceramic beads as a sorbent. Three different sorbent-to-chromite mass ratios, namely 0.5:1, 1:1, and 2:1, were tested with different process conditions, including dewatering in a stationary and a rotatingl bed. The experimental work showed that it was possible to achieve the target moistures in less than 10 minutes, irrespective of the sorbent-to-chromite ratio used. Ratios of 1:1 or higher, however, proved to be the best. The sorbent reusability at mass ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 were therefore tested. With a 1:1 mass ratio, the sorbents could be reused for three cycles, while with 2:1 ratio, the number of cycles increased to six. The sorbent-to-chromite mass ratio used had a significant influence on the required contact time and the reusability of the sorbents.

Beatrix Gold Mine, a deep-level gold mine in the Free State province of South Africa, has the highest methane emission rate of any gold mine in the country. Methane is emitted from underground sources intersected during mining operations and is liberated into the general mine atmosphere. The total methane emission rate for the mine is of the order of 16001/s and the South section of the mine emits approximately 10001/s of methane gas. The mine has a history of gas accumulations which have led to a number of underground explosions. Following the last explosion in 2001 and the subsequent investigation, a number of recommendations were made. Two of these were to consider extracting the underground mine methane to render the mine atmosphere safe, and to declare hazardous locations that require special operating procedures. A number of such workplaces have now been declared at the South section of the mine. Methane gas is a potent, explosive greenhouse gas whose contribution to global warming and climate change is 21 times higher than that of carbon dioxide. To reduce its inherent danger and to mitigate its global warming impact, a carbon credit project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol has been developed and implemented, the aim being to capture and destroy the methane at Beatrix mine. The mine has constructed an extraction system to capture and extract 400 (Is of the methane. Percentage methane (per volume) of the gas intersected at source is 85%, with negligible concentrations of other hydrocarbons and water associated. The mine contracted the services of Group Five to design and construct the flare and ancillary equipment on surface, and Promethium Carbon was contracted to assist with the carbon¬-related aspects, approval framework, and administration of the project. A number of design and construction challenges had to be faced to extract and transport the gas effectively to the surface of the mine as the emitters are approximately 3 600 m away from the mine shaft at a depth of 860 m. Further considerations were the requirements for the type of column to be used to transport the methane gas, the pressure loss over the system, the safety systems needed to address the risk factors involved in the transport of the methane gas, and a suitable pumping system to extract the gas to the surface. The system operates under negative pressure provided by two blowers on surface delivering the emissions to a flare capable of burning off 450 8/s of methane gas. In this paper a number of benefits for the mine are discussed. These include, but are not limited to, the removal of approximately 55% of the total volume of methane gas from the general body of the air in the geographical areas of the mine where the methane gas is emitted into the atmosphere, and reducing the risk of methane-related incidents. A further benefit of this project is the mitigation of the global warming impact of the methane gas and the reduction of the mine's carbon footprint by approximately 25%. This project could also assist in alleviating the energy shortage being experienced in South Africa by means of the planned generation of 4 MW of electrical power, utilizing the methane gas, as a second phase of the project.

Anglogold Ashanti?s Kopanang Gold Plant (previously No. 9 Gold Plant) treats ore from Kopanang and Tau Lekoa shafts. The plant is twin streamed and has dedicated treatment circuits, from milling to final product, for each shaft. Waste rock material is used to compensate for the mill gap on both streams. Each stream consists of three 4.85 m x9.15 m ROM mills in closed circuit with a single stage hydrocyclone, milling an average of 7 000 t per day. The liner configuration in each mill consists of six rows of 30 grid liners along with rectangular lifter bars. The topic of gold lock-up is not new and has been investigated and reported on many times, both within Anglogold Ashanti and the broader mining industry. Although the lock-up mechanism is understood, its measurement is neither practical nor precise. The initial lock-up in a new liner and the release as the liner wears down cannot be accurately quantified. Previous test work carried out on Kopanang Gold Plant (with a ?gold scanner?) measured the natural gamma radiation emitted by uranium. This radiation is in proportion to the mass of concentrate locked up in the grid liner pockets, as well as between the cast-on backing plate and the shell. The ratio of concentrate lock-up was estimated as 35% behind the liners and65% in the pockets. Mill gravity concentrates are recovered during routine relining operations from behind the grid liners at Kopanang Gold Plant. Prior to relining, the liners tend to release the concentrate from the pockets as the liners wear. Historical Kopanang data from actual ?mill gold? smelted indicates that an average of 29 kg gold is recovered from behind each row. This indicates a total lock-up of 250kg gold per mill. This locked-up gold should preferably be minimizedor eliminated for the following reasons: ?The cyclic build-up and release of gold in mills complicates accounting ?Gold concentrate arising from liners is a security risk and creates a major mechanism for gold theft ?Loss of interest on the value of 250 kg fine gold is significant and was a major driver for the project. These factors led to the need to develop techniques to eliminate or at least minimize the gold lock-up in the mills. Wave liners, with rubber inserts, have been successful in eliminating lock-up, and were tested at Kopanang Gold Plant in November 2000. However, due to increased load-slip and high wear rates associated with these liners, this option proved less economical in terms of liner wear. Grid liners, with rubber-filled pockets, demonstrated a very high wear life and eliminated pocket lock-up. This system was successfully trialed in January 2003, but unfortunately did not prevent lock-up behind the liners. Current developments have resulted in a system that eliminates both pocket and backing plate lock-up. The conventional grid liner design has been modified to remove its steel backing plate. Rubber inserts that are integrated onto a rubber backing plate, have been designed to be used with the newly modified grid. The backing plate and grid pockets are now completely occupied by rubber, thus completely eliminating concentrate build-up around the new grid liner system installed in November 2003. Results to date are promising and liner life is expected to exceed conventional performance.

Prediction of pothole characteristics is a challenging task, confronting production geologists at the platinum mines of the Bushveld Complex. The frequency, distribution, size, shape, severity and relationship (FDS3R) of potholes has a huge impact on mine planning and scheduling, and consequently cost. It is with this in mind that this study was initiated. Quantitative analysis of potholes indicates that pothole size (area covered) can be described by two partly overlapping lognormal distributions. These are referred to as Populations A (smaller) and B (larger). The range of observed pothole sizes conforms to a simple double exponential growth model based on Newton's Cooling Curve. A third size range of very large potholes (Population C) that could not be modelled properly within the proposed growth model is interpreted as to represent a very early phase of aggressive regional thermo-chemical erosion and potholing. In general, potholes are dominantly quasi circular with only a subordinate tendency of elongation. In the UG2, potholes with elongated forms are more prevalent in the size range between 20 and 500 m diameter. In the Merensky Reef elongated potholes are more common in the size range above 50 m in diameter. Although not distinctly visible, elongation of potholes in both the UG2 and the Merensky Reef show a net north/south orientation. Using shapes of pothole rims and floor areas, documented for the UG2 in the Waterval Shaft area, it is demonstrated that the northern, down-dip edges of potholes have steeper dips than the southern, up-dip edges. Spatial distribution studies using a uniform quadrant method suggest that in both the UG2 and the Merensky Reef, the potholes are randomly distributed, with a tendency towards clustering. Clustering appears to be more prevalent in the smaller Population A potholes. Bearing all findings in mind, it is found that the model of thermo-chemical erosion of the cumulus floor by new influxes of superheated magma best explains the observed data. Partial to complete melting of the cumulate floor occurred in three phases. The first represents the emplacement of hot magma. This magma, due to turbulent flow and high chemical and physical potential, aggressively attacks the existing floor (crystal mush on the magma/floor interface). Regional erosion is manifested by large, often coalescing potholes. During the second phase, when the magma emplacement process ceased and cooling in situ started, two distinct periods of pothole formation ensued. The first is related to rapid cooling along the relatively steep part of the Newton Cooling Curve, when Population B potholes nucleated randomly and grew rapidly with concurrent convective overturn and largely laminar flow condition. The second period of cooling occurred on the shallow-dipping part of the Newton Cooling Curve. Population A pothole growth became more subdued and nucleation appears to have been, at least locally, clustered. The final phase of this proposed 'super magma cycle' was introduced when chromitite crystallization and precipitation terminated pothole formation. This was followed sequentially by pyroxene and plagioclase crystallization to form the typical cyclic units of the Critical Zone. No suitable proxy could be found for the prediction of pothole density of potholes associated with the UG2 (likely due to limited spatial data coverage), and these are best predicted by extrapolation. The Merensky Reef slope index, in contrast, provides a proxy for pothole density, enabling prediction with reasonable confidence. This predictive model has been verified using underground information. The findings made during the course of this investigation have, when implemented, significant impact. Successful implementation will not only allow enhanced resource and reserve definition, but also better mine planning and scheduling.

A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. IRUP is an iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite rock that formed due to hot ironrich fluids and gases replacing local stratigraphic zones of the Bushveld Complex. This study focuses on the estimation of the probability of IRUP occurrence on the Merensky Reef at the Marikana Karee Mine. A 2.15 million centare IRUP-rich domain at the Karee Mine was initially defined from the interpretation of a surface aeromagnetic anomaly, and exposures in the mine workings. Surface boreholes (spaced 250-500 m apart) within this IRUP domain contain approximately equal numbers of IRUP-replaced and IRUP-free intersections. Owing to the uncertainty in the continuity of the IRUP alteration (a result of the wide borehole spacing), the risk associated with the development of mining infrastructure within this domain is unquantifiable. Semi-quantitative data comprising visual estimates of IRUP replacement from reef development mapping data and surface borehole reef intersections was interpolated into blocks using indicator kriging estimation. Comparative analyses of the estimate of IRUP occurrences were made by changing the block size and declustering the data systematically. Reconciliations of the probability of IRUP predicted from the block models derived from the different data-sets and sequential indicator simulation models were analysed for four mining study blocks. A quantitative approach to modelling the occurrence of IRUP can be an additional tool for refining the estimate of the geological losses that inform the mine plan in such high-risk zones.

"The Witwatersrand Basin is the heart of South Africa’a gold mining industry. The cluster of gold mines located in the Witwatersrand Basin generates a significant amount of mine tailings, which have adverse effects on the environment and ecological systems. In addition, disposal costs are very high. The exponential population growth in the Witwatersrand area has resulted in pressure on the reserves of traditional building materials. Quarrying for natural construction material is very expensive and damages the landscape. This work therefore examines the use of gold mine tailings in the production of bricks.Different mixing ratios of gold tailings, cement, and water were used. The resulting bricks were then cured in three different environments - sun dried, oven dried at 360°C, and cured in water for 24 hours. The bricks were then tested for unconfined compressive strength, water absorption, and weight loss. The results showed that the mixture with more cement than tailings had a compressive strength of approximately 530 kN/m2. It was also found that the best brick curing system was in a water environment. Bricks made from tailings cost more than conventional bricks because of the higher quantity of cement used, but the manufacturing process consumes less water. Overall, the results indicated that gold mine tailings have a high potential to substitute for the natural materials currently used in brickmaking.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

The results of a series of physical model studies of the stability of jointed rock slopes carried out some years ago are described. These models were tested under centrifugal loading. Four ?geological? structures were tested; all had the same joint orientations and strengths, but the relative spacing of the joints was different. The results showed that the mechanisms of failure of the slopes varied for the different models, and the gravitational loads at which failure developed also varied. The following conclusions are drawn from the results of the physical model tests: ?the mechanism of slope failure is by progressive deformations throughout the slope ?the ratio of the spacings between the different sets of discontinuities exerts considerable influence on the slope failure ?in the models tested, the intact material strength had no noticeable influence on the stability of the jointed rock slopes(note that for hard rock, similitude conditions indicate a prototype slope height of 300 to 400 m, and therefore intact rock failure might not be expected under simple gravity conditions, i.e. no tectonic stresses) ?rock slope failures are three-dimensional and in general are not amenable to two-dimensional simplification ?knowledge of the orientations of discontinuities in the slopes does not allow prediction of a unique failure surface, nor of a volume of failure. The volume of failure is determined to a large extent by the plan configuration of the slope.

Ion exchange is considered to be an effective technology for the removal of various impurities from cobalt advance electrolytes. With the correct choice of resin, ion exchange can consistently remove the required impurities to the levels for the production of high-grade cobalt metal. Although ion exchange was in the past used primarily for nickel removal, more recently it has been also considered for the removal of copper, zinc, and cadmium. Generally, granular ion exchange products are used, but Mintek is currently evaluating ion exchange fibres for a number of applications, including the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolytes. Fibrous ion exchangers have major advantages compared to granular resins in that they have significantly higher reaction rates, and wash water volumes could be limited. Granular and fibrous ion exchangers were evaluated and compared for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte. A synthetic electrolyte containing 50 g/L cobalt and 50 mg/L copper was used for the test work. Equilibrium isotherms, mini-column tests, and split elution tests were done. The results were used to size a full-scale operation to treat 100 m3/h of electrolyte. The potential cobalt losses or recycle requirements were estimated, and data to calculate indicative operating costs for each adsorbent was generated. This information was used for a techno-economic comparison of granular and fibrous ion exchange systems for the removal of copper from cobalt advance electrolyte.

In 2023, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies accounted for about 62% of the global fuel cell market share and this demand is expected to grow. Commercialisation requires technologies capable of cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing. The membrane electrode assembly is crucial and represents a significant cost to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. Manufacturing the electrode components for membrane electrode assemblies at high volumes can reduce production costs while delivering on the forecasted industry demands. Roll-to-roll is a mature coating technology applied in various manufacturing industries such as batteries, printed electronics, microelectronics, photovoltaics, printing, paper consumables, etc., with significant potential for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. While the high-volume production process for membrane electrode assembly manufacturing differs from laboratory-scale, the membrane electrode assembly structure remains unchanged. Roll-to-roll is a continuous coating process with speeds of 10 m/min being achieved. In this work, MicrogravureTM and slot-die coating methods have been adopted and have shown promising outcomes for producing gas diffusion electrodes for membrane electrode assemblies. An overview of the MicrogravureTM and slotdie coating methodologies is provided, and a discussion on preliminary results and challenges are presented. Work on MicrogravureTM gas diffusion electrode manufacturing has already achieved comparable performance with spray-coated gas diffusion electrodes. The influence of coating parameters and drying on the coated catalyst layer quality is discussed.

The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southernsector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite-anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only theUG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.
