Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused by media when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; and self-breakage resulting from the chip¬ping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions. A simplified form of the model was used to predict the performance of an 8 m diameter SAG mill with L/D = 0.5 grinding a copper ore, and predicted maximum capacity and minimum kWh/ton at about 6% ball load at 25% total filling. Two FAG mills of L/D = 2 were necessary to give the same capacity, and the simulations indicated a lower kWh/ton for these mills. For this ore, both systems were technically feasible.

The paper reviews the restrictions imposed by the Department of Mines (now the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs) on the surface use of ground that has been undermined at shallow depths (down to a depth of244m). The reasons for the restrictions are discussed, with special reference to the early records kept by the Department of Mines on subsidence and fracture of the surface. A discussion of the nature of the strata overlying the ore-body, and the effect of undermining, is followed by a detailed account of investigational work, particularly since 1970, on the stability of shallowly undermined ground. The significance of the data collected during the investigations is considered next, with special reference to the social and economic implications. These are so farreaching, that it is proposed that the already flexible approach of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in considering what structures may be built on undermined ground should become even more flexible. To this end, the appointment of a Commission is proposed to collect as much information as possible on the stability of ground undermined at shallow depth, and to revise the current overrestrictive conditions or guide lines that are in use.

Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.

W. R. Lawrie (Member): As all the Institute members present are aware, the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was held in Great Britain from 3rd to 24th May, 1969. The Congress opened in London and the first week was devoted to technical sessions. Several receptions and other forms of entertainment were held in the evenings. The Congress was attended by some 1 200 delegates, many of whom were accompanied by their wives. As can be imagined a large organisation was needed to cater for all the whims of these delegates, to arrange accommodation and to provide transport for the technical trips, for the receptions and for the sight-seeing tours. Papers presented at the technical sessions proved of great interest. It was stimulating to hear of the developments taking place in the various branches of mining and metallurgy. The discussions which developed between men from so many different countries were thought provoking, led to new friendships and most of us made valuable contacts for the future. There were 141 papers presented in the one week. They were given in four separate halls with two, three and sometimes four papers coming up for discussion in each of the three sessions per day in each hall. Among the more interesting subjects were those concerning off-shore drilling and the facilities for production of petroleum and natural gas. Beach mining at Consolidated Diamond Mines drew a large audience. Automation, mechanization and other technical developments were well described and we were brought up to date with modern techniques of mineral prospecting. There was general discussion on the future of the mineral industries together with comments on the consumption and price trends of these metals and minerals. The future of uranium, of vital interest to us in South Africa, came in for much debate. During the first week, besides attending the technical sessions and seeing some of the sights of London, we were royally entertained. There was a banquet, attended by some I 400 people, where we were welcomed by Princess Alexandra, a reception by H.M. Government in the Banqueting House, and we were entertained at the House of Lords on a terrace overlooking the bustling and rather muddy river Thames. Then there was the visit to the Glyndebourne Opera. It is only in London that at 3 o'clock of an afternoon, nearly 1 000 people all togged up in dress suits and long dresses and carrying packets of sandwiches for supper could arrive at a station to catch a train, and not even cause a stir of interest or a raised eyebrow! This is the way we travelled 60 miles to the opera from London. Surely there can be no more picturesque or romantic a setting for an opera than this large 400-year old red brick manor house nestling in the green valleys of the unspoilt Sussex countryside. It was a glorious evening and though we returned somewhat late and tired, not one of us would have missed this experience. After the first week in London there was a choice of tours of one week to London and the Home Counties, Cornwall, a Geological tour to Scotland, South Wales, and North England. These were followed by further one week tours to Yorkshire and Lancashire, Scotland, West Country and Midlands, a Geological tour of Wales, and a Mining and Geological tour to Jurassic Iron Mines. We then returned to London for the final session and closing banquet. Post-congress tours were arranged to Europe and to Ireland. It was a wonderful Congress, a great experience, we made many friends and may there be many more congresses! . L. W. P. van den Bosch (Member): Much has already been said in appreciation of the excellent organisation and arrangements made for the delegates who attended this Congress. This report is confined to a brief discussion of the personal impressions gained from the papers presented and the technical visits attended. The papers covered a wide variety of subjects ranging from highly theoretical observations to practical descriptions of operations. There were three main themes, VIZ: 1. The attention given to research and its forceful application to practical operation. 2. A steady development in mechanization and automation leading to savings in manpower. 3. Improvization, modernization and adaptation of exisitng facilities. Thoughts on these themes can best be illustrated by comments on some of the industries visited. COAL The National Coal Board (N.C.B.) has been most progressive and all of us have heard of the Bevercotes Colliery with its completely automatic mining and coal handling equipment. This was not, unfortunately, on show but there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest advances in coal mining leading towards continuous production. Coal in Britain is fighting for its life against oil, North Sea gas, imported gases and nuclear power. Output is dropping, the less efficient collieries are closing down and efficiencies are steadily rising as the following tabulation indicates: In 1931: 1 million men produced 300 million tons of coal In 1947: 0.7 million men produced 230 million tons of coal In 1968: 0.4 million men produced 160 million tons of coal

The vertical distribution of platinum-group elements (PGE) in the Merensky and UG2 chromitite Reefs is highly variable, but does follow certain general patterns that allow the testing of geological models. In the Merensky reef, historically popular geological representations and interpretations have suggested that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatitic pyroxenite bounded by two chromitite layers. However, there are now enough published exceptions to this relationship to expose its fallacy. The vertical distribution of the PGE depends largely upon the separation between these two chromitite layers or the absence of one chromitite layer. Where separation is small or only one chromitite layer is present, there is considerable PGE mineralization in the footwall below the pyroxenite and lower chromitite layer. With increasing separation between the two chromitites, the mineral¬ization occurs progressively higher in the succession, and tends to track the upper chromitite layer. The view presented here is that the entire Merensky package is comprised of three events of magma emplacement, in which each has produced variable reaction with, and erosion of, the footwall, causing recrystallization of pyroxenite into pegmatitic pyroxenite. The magma then produced a chromitite layer followed by pyroxenite. Each chromitite layer is associated with some mineralization, which was extensively complemented by the subsequent formation of a sulphide liquid carrying PGE that trickled down through about 1 m of permeable crystal pile. The sulphide liquid formed after, not coincident with, the pyroxenite layers. The distribution of PGE in the UG2 chromitite shows up to three upward depletion sequences of PGE, also suggesting three events. The PGE are associated only with the chromite. The contribution from a sulphide liquid is considered to have been minimal for two reasons. Cu and Ni are extremely low in the UG2 which would not be expected if sulphides had been present. Also, by analogy with the Merensky, downward trickling of sulphides would have caused some PGE to be present in the footwall. There are some PGE in the footwall, but only where remnants of chromitite occur, and the hanging wall is lacking in PGE. In the northeastern Bushveld the UG2 chromitite is thinner than elsewhere, and there is a UG3 chromitite layer, not present elsewhere, that has a high Pt/Pd ratio. It is surmized that in the rest of the Bushveld the UG3 only appears to be absent because it has merged with the UG2 to produce the high Pt concentration at the top of the composite UG2. The non-accumulation of the package of pyroxenite-norite-anorthosite between the UG2 and UG3 in the northeastern Bushveld, which is not seen elsewhere, creates an interesting challenge to the formation of silicate layering in the complex. "Drought conditions and the possible lack of sufficient raw water supply are a constant reminder to the Southern African diamond miner of the need to minimize raw (new) water input while maintaining or expanding mine throughput.Since water input volume is directly related to water output (loss) volume, mainly to the tailings, it is obviously beneficial to dewater the tailings as much as possible. However, this may not always be as easily achieved as first thought. Owing to the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the unique chemical profile of each raw water source, dewatering of the slurry is not a standard process that can be applied equally across the entire diamond industry.This paper presents a first-step strategy that kimberlite diamond mine operators should consider and apply to meet and exceed their watersaving targets. Introduction A common metric for measuring water use efficiency in a metallurgical plant is the amount of raw water used per ton of head feed treated (m3/t). The metric includes all water recycled from the dewatering process and from the tailings storage facility (TSF), and the only inputs are tons of ROM ore and cubic metres of raw water make-up to replace water lost to evaporation, seepage, and lock-up at the TSF (Figure 1).The volume of new raw water available to the process is not unlimited and a maximum monthly allowance is typically set during the mine permitting process. Consequently, if the volume of water lost exceeds the volume of new water available or alternatively, in times of drought where the allowable volume is unavailable, the plant has no other option but to reduce throughput.However, if the plant operator is able reduce the volume of water lost to the TSF, the plant will have additional capacity to either increase tonnage throughput or sustain nameplate capacity during periods of severe drought. The obvious conclusion, therefore, is to reduce the volume of water lost to the tailings by improving the efficiency of the dewatering process (typically gravity thickening) simply by increasing the density of the tailings being discharged. In practice, however, the unique mineralogy of each kimberlite deposit and the chemical profile of the raw water source used imply that at some mine sites, solid/liquid separation (or settling) of tailings slurries at the dewatering process is more easily achieved than at others. In these cases, simple practical steps such as firstly improving the flocculant reagent make-up and dosing control, and secondly focusing on thickener discharge control, are the only requirements for enhancing water recovery at the dewatering circuit. At other mine sites however, solid/liquid separation of the tailings may not be achieved at all, in which case efforts to increase water recovery by improving reagent dosage and thickener control would be fruitless unless the colloidal properties of the thickener feed slurry are modified."

"Falls of ground pose costly hazards to personnel and equipment and thus measures should be taken to prevent them. This study endeavours to improve the support systems used in geotechnically poor ground at a Zimbabwean platinum mine by analysing the status quo and recommending an effective support system. Various techniques were used to determine the quality of ground conditions, predict the rock mass behaviour, and to identify the appropriate rockbolt type. An analysis of the current ground control methods and their limitations was also undertaken.The results showed that the current support system and mining practices in poor ground need to be modified to improve safety and productivity. Stoping overbreak is influenced by poor ground conditions and the explosives currently used. The use of emulsion is recommended to replace ANFO. Redesigning of pillars is also recommended in poor ground conditions. An evaluation of the current roofbolt system indicated an opportunity for improvement. With new insight on the performance of the shorter length roofbolts currently in use, a new support system was recommended taking into consideration cost-benefit analysis. Barring down using pinch bars in poor ground was seen as a risky and time-consuming exercise, hence the use of mechanical scalers is recommended to achieve zero harm and to meet production targets. Smoothwall blasting is recommended in poor ground to minimize excavation damage. Other recommendations include the use of hydrological surveys to determine groundwater levels and implement corrective measures. Both empirical and numerical modelling approaches need to be utilized in determining the optimum support. IntroductionThe presence of geological discontinuities such as faults and joints weakens the rock mass. Adequate support is critical in achieving zero harm in underground mines. This paper reviews the current support systems used in poor ground conditions at a Zimbabwean platinum mine. The area of research is located on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The mine exploits platinum group elements (PGEs) and base metals. It is shallow, having a maximum depth of less than 300 m. The Great Dyke is the second largest reserve of PGEs, following the South African Bushveld Complex (Oberthur et al., 2012). It is a linear layered intrusion that extends for about 550 km with a maximum width of 11 km (Prendergast, 1989). The generalized section of the Great Dyke is almost like a trumpet, comprising layers that dip towards the centre. The reef exploited at the mine, the Mineralised Sulphide Zone (MSZ), is located in the pyroxenite layer, which is hosted in the ultramafic sequence. The MSZ is a uniform layer about 2– 3.5 m thick, dipping at around 10–14° from surface outcrop towards the axis of the basin, and located between bronzite and websterite horizons. The visible disseminated sulphide mineralization shows a typical and consistent vertical distribution of platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal values. The research was undertaken to review the current support systems used in geotechnically poor ground conditions in a bid to improve both safety and productivity."

RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

A brief summary of the propagation characteristics of rock provides the necessary understanding to design effective radar surveys. Measurements of the electrical properties of the major Bushveld platinum-bearing horizons and their host rocks show that radar is an excellent tool for both short -and longer-range mapping. Experimental work confirms the performance predictions. High frequency, 500 MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a first-rate tool for mapping features in the hangingwall of the orebody, locally known as a ?reef?, for the purposes of determining hangingwall stability. The triplet chromitites above the UG2 have been clearly mapped, as has the Leader Seam above the UG2. Borehole radar at lower frequencies has been used over longer ranges to map reef elevation. Potholes in the UG2 are clearly distinguished in range and elevation to within metre accuracy. The nature of the slump in the various footwall horizons is also apparent. In future, as GPR is routinely applied, it is likely to become used for other purposes. Borehole radar is being developed to operate at higher frequencies, which will allow it to be deployed from boreholes that are within 5 m of the target horizon. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

Rock density determinations are necessary for ore resource evaluations from estimated block grades in g/t. Rock density depends on the mineral composition and, thus, it is specific for each rock type. The rock density distributions for different rock types are often symmetric. Hence, the arithmetic mean is a good approximation for the average density for lithological units. However, there may exist spatial variation in density values due to alteration, fracturing and original heterogeneities such as layering. This study compares the kriged density model with the one with constant density values for different lithological units in the evaluation of metal amounts in rock blocks. The case study consisted of rock densities measured from the drill cores at Ahmavaara PGE deposit in northern Finland. The used Ni contents were simulated in accordance with the spatial distribution of rock densities. The Ni amounts in 2x2x2 m3blocks are higher for the kriged densities than for the average densities. The difference is increasing with the increasing metal amounts due to the nonlinear correlation between Ni content and rock density. The final effect on the resource estimation depends on the cutt off grade and prices of the metal, for example, for a very valuable metal the small differences are significant

Continuous Mining presents an opportunity to extract reef in the stope ?continuously? by integrating the drill and blast activity using propellants or low energy charges. To date, the majority of effort spent on Continuous Mining systems has focused on developing an effective rock breaking process (micro breaking process), and to some extent, eliminating fumes and dust. The perceived benefits of applying low energy charges have been identified as: ?Concentrated mining yielding face advances of 40 to 60 m per month ?Lower stoping widths through better-controlled breaking ?Increase in the advance per blast ?Increase in labour productivity ?The potential to mine reefs where specific conditions make conventional mining uneconomic e.g. reefs with shales in the immediate hangingwall. However, the ability to successfully use low energy charges to create a ?Continuous or Semi-Continuous? mining method is dependent on overcoming the following challenges. ?Improving reliability of rock breaking. This is dependent upon achieving:? Improved drilling accuracy, and? Successful stemming or gas confinement, particularly in fractured rock ?Reducing gas and dust levels ?Reducing high costs. Through the research carried out in Future Mine, many different low energy rock breaking methods and systems were investigated. Whilst detailed results cannot be published here, the guidelines for overcoming low energy rock breaking challenges are discussed.
