Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

An investigation into the stability of large open stopes at Premier diamond mine, Culinan, South Africa, is described. The open stopes are located in a weak kimberlite orebody, directly underneath a 75 m-thick sill of gabbro. Two and three-dimensional stress analyses were carried out in a back-analysis of the stresses and failure around the first open stope created under the sill. The results were used in the prediction of the future stability of the planned open stopes, intervening pillars, and sill.

The paper describes tests on horizontal-belt filters for the filtration of gold and uranium. The promising results led to the installation of 17 such filters (ten of them 120 m2 in size) in the mine's metallurgical plants, and their operation is discussed. Although several problems were encountered both in operation and maintenance, it is concluded that, with correct operation and suitable filter cloths, exceptionally good metallurgical recoveries can be achieved at filtration rates twice to three times higher than those on rotary filters.

Brigadier Ralph Shelton Griffin Stokes D.S.O., C.B.E., M.C., who died in England on 24th February, 1979, at the age of 96 years, was one of the most colourful personalities in South African mining history. After the South African War, in which he served as a trooper, he joined the Crown Reef Mine as an assistant assayer (1902), and was to serve the mines of the Corner House Group intermittently for the next 57 years until his retirement in 1959.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

Looking for an idyllic paradise that has investment and business potential as spectacular as the stunning views of mountains, the rich Ganesh Himal zinc-lead deposit exposed between 4,050 m and 5,000 m is the answer. Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

Efficient drill-and-blast performance is pivotal to the profitability of deep-level mines, where high operating costs and declining grades demand maximum throughput. This study investigated persistent fragmentation problems at a longhole stoping operation that suffered from simultaneous oversized rock blockages in 300 mm × 300 mm grizzlies and excessive fines. Fifty-one muckpile images from five blasted stopes were analysed with Split-Desktop. Although the overall F₈₀ was 287 mm, nominally suitable for the grizzly aperture, the Rosin- Rammler uniformity index of 0.80 revealed a highly inconsistent size distribution containing both boulders and fines. Existing drill patterns were then evaluated with the Aegis underground software, which showed negligible crack overlap at the toe owing to inadequate spacing and burden. Insufficient energy overlap between blastholes, particularly at the toe, was found to contribute to the coarse fragmentation, while excessive fines were attributed to the crushing and severely fractured zones of blastholes. Optimisation simulations demonstrated that an 89 mm blasthole diameter on a 2 m × 2 m pattern would overlap, aligning with Aegis requirements of balancing powder factor, break angle, and energy distribution. Implementing this revised pattern is expected to reduce secondary breaking, prevent ore-pass blockages, lower fines, and ultimately improve overall production efficiency. The methodology illustrates how integrated image analysis and modelling software can effectively diagnose and address fragmentation issues, particularly in underground longhole mining, where challenging blasting conditions require a balance between achieving optimal fragmentation and maintaining stope stability. This approach offers a cost-effective pathway to improving comminution performance in deeplevel mines.

The efficiency of high capacity SAG mills which consume large amounts of energy depends on the grinding and slurry discharge systems. A 9.7 m × 4.8 m SAG mill with radial pulp lifters is used at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex grinding circuit. The process audit indicated that the pulp discharge system was not efficient, judging by the amount of slurry flow back and carry over. These events limited the discharge rate and increased the wear rate of the lifters and grates. With the objective of finding a new design for pulp lifters, a 3D DEM software (KMPCDEM ©), along with the plant operational data and photographic evidence was used. The KMPCDEM © software was used to compare the efficiency of the radial and curved pulp lifter design based on the material flow. The slurry flow was analysed in terms of ease of discharge and lifter wear rate. It was found that changing the radial pulp lifters to curved pulp lifters could improve the discharge efficiency,and decrease wear rate of the pulp lifter in particular at the base of the pulp lifters. The simulation results showed that if curved lifters with a radius of 0.3×mill radius are used, the amount of slurry flow back and carry over will be negligible. It is predicted that by installing the curved pulp lifters, the capacity of the mill increases by 10% and the pulp lifter service life improves by at least 20%. Syncrude Canada Ltd. produces synthetic crude oil from Canada?s vast oil sand reserves by mining the oil sand, then separating and upgrading the ultra-viscous crude oil, or bitumen (~ 106mPa s @ 10ºC). At Syncrude?s Aurora Mine, about 16 000 tonnes oil sand per hour are mined and then transported 5 km by slurry pipeline to the extraction plant. The waste tailings stream is then transported about10 km by pipeline to a settling/sand storage basin. Oil sand slurries are reasonably concentrated (> 35%solids by volume), typically have a sand particle diameter between 0.18 and 0.3 mm, and are transported at reasonably high velocities (3 to 5.5 m/s). As one would expect, pipeline wear is a significant problem in this industry, in terms of both unplanned production outages and maintenance costs. In order to develop strategies to extend pipe life and to focus more on condition-based maintenance scheduling (as opposed to preventative maintenance), Syncrude has implemented an ongoing pipe wear measurement programme. Regular measurements of pipe wall thickness are obtained at various circumferential positions at a number of axial locations along each pipeline, using an ultrasonic scanning technique. In this paper, we show how wear rates vary as a function of axial location and circumferential position for oil sand hydro transport and coarse particle tailings pipelines. The specific positions at which peak wear rates occur are explained by considering the characteristics of the coarse particle slurry flows to which the pipelines are exposed.

PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The President: "This paper is entitled 'The Design, Erection and Operation of a Purlex Plant at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited'. It is presented to the Institute by Mr B. G. Meyburgh, a visitor to our Institute. He is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State and is the Uranium Plant Superintendent at Buffelsfontein and he, therefore, is in a very strong position to describe this very excellent job which is being done as he has been associated with this plant from the inception." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Gentlemen, the paper you've heard from Mr Meyburgh is a very concise and interesting account of an important piece of work, and I think the title is so completely descriptive of the subject, which is admirably set out in the paper which you have heard. You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Thank you very much, Mr Meyburgh, for an interesting paper. We have a long list of contributors, and I am not going to waste any more time. It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. Particular attention is paid to smelting techniques and current metallurgical research, and brief suggestions are made for future research. v074n06p254.pdf
