"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper/gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. The effect of the complex mineralogy on the flotation performance is depicted. Initially, ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. In the ensuing years, ore treated shifted to primarily freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better float kinetics but with the downside of producing lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the roughing circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory float test work done and discussed at length in a previous paper. Salient among the adopted recommendations from previous work were increasing circuit capacity and modifying configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidisation stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and subsequently below-specification final concentrate product. This was primarily due to higher mass pulls resulting from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams. This necessitated the need for an enlarged cleaning capability to offset this. The extra cleaning capacity came on-stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. INTRODUCTION The Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining PLC, a First Quantum subsidiary. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal ZCCM. The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005. Prior to June 2009, Kansanshi mine treated only two ore types: oxide and sulphide. All transitional ores mined during the period leading up to 2009 were stockpiled. The treatment of the minerologically complex, transitional ores through a third train commenced in June 2009 but with numerous metallurgical challenges. This transitional ore (called mixed ores) could not be previously treated economically due to high gangue acid consumption (GAC) minerals association (making it unsuitable for the oxide float–leach circuit) and poor flotation response ruling out the conventional sulphide float circuit. The new novel circuit involved a conventional sulphide pre-float followed by flotation involving staged controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS)."

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

Selection of the most suitable roadheaders (boom type tunnelling machines) for the galleries/tunnels to be excavated in certain rock and under known project conditions is important for avoiding problems during application. This research utilized a multiple attribute decision-making method and studied how this will be applied for the selection of boom-type excavation machines. The Cayirhan Coal Basin was used for selecting roadheaders using the analytical hierarchy process, which is one of the multiple attribute decision-making methods. To conclude, this study reveals that decision-making methods can be used in the process of selecting roadheaders for the excavation of galleries. Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

Sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and sphalerite, are leached by ferric sulphate. This reaction produces ferrous sulphate and other dissolved products. The ferrous sulphate is re-oxidized to ferric sulphate by bacteria. These reactions can be written as: [ ] However, in 1964 Silverman and Ehrlich proposed that this is not the only role that is played by bacteria. These researchers proposed that T. ferrooxidans enhances the rate of oxidation of pyrite above that achieved by chemical reaction with ferric sulphate at the same solution conditions. This enhancement in the rate of dissolution was proposed to occur by direct microbiological action, possibly by the extra cellular secretion of an enzymatic oxidant. Since the Silverman and Ehrlich proposal, different authors have made opposing claims concerning the action of T. ferrooxidanson pyrite. Steel is a highly versatile material due to its low cost and good mechanical properties, but typically needs some or other form of corrosion protection due to its tendency to corrode when exposed to atmospheric conditions. In the case of organic coatings, the corrosion protection and functionality of the final product is critically dependent on the adhesion of the coating to the surface of the steel. In this work the effect of contaminants and the nature of the surface layers present on industrial steel products are investigated by means of paint adhesion tests, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the presence of sodium species on the surface is very detrimental to paint adhesion under wet conditions, while satisfactory adhesion may be obtained even in the presence of silicon and carbon residues. It was also found that the nature of the Fe-O layer, formed under wet conditions is labile and different from that formed in dry air, and that subtle changes in process conditions, such as changing the oxygen content of the quench water, may change the adhesion of paint to the surface of the steel. Lewis acid-base interactions are discussed as a mechanism that may determine the bonding between the steel and polymer coating.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the &apos;fine&apos; and &apos;coarse&apos; size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and &apos;coarse&apos; particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical of these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2 based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in the FeMn process are principally similar, originating from silicate minerals but can have quite large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic of the FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOx in slag are not only divalent oxides but also contain some higher valent of Cr3+and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainly of Mn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexist in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. The thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys, production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

In anticipation of the flooding of an adjacent dolomitic groundwater compartment, five rough parallel sided boundary plugs at 58 and 50levels have been designed to resist safely hydrostatic heads of 1500and 1250 metres, respectively, over a service life of 100 years. Following a description of the engineering properties of the surrounding rocks, the paper details the design considerations relating to structural length and strength, hydraulic gradient, rock mass watertightness, constituent materials of mortar intruded concrete, pregrouting of permeable discontinuities within the surrounding rock mass, a bentonite barrier to resist aggressive mine water, plug tightening and design performance requirements. Routine quality control tests include permeability of the rock mass, fluidity, bleed and strength development of the intruded mortar, and temperature of the intruded concrete during curing. A special test programme includes determination of strength and stiffness of cored concrete and rock samples, shear strength of the rock/plug interface and associated in situ contact stress in order toe stimate the load safety factor against plug failure by shear.

Shear-flow coupling tests are conducted using an original apparatus, and a shear-flow coupling model using Geographic Information System (GIS) is developed in order to evaluate shear-flow coupling properties of a rock joint. Shear-flow coupling tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of joint once decreases, and then rapidly increases at the shear displacement near the peak shear stress. The proposed model simulates the test results relatively well. However it indicates that it is difficult to apply the local ‘cubic law’ model in the initial shear stage, in which the change of selective flow path is remarkable. Scher-Fliess-Kopplungsversuche werden mit einem neuartigen Versuchsgerät durchgeführt und mithilfe von Geo-Informationssystemen (GIS) gedeutet, um so ein Modell für die Scher-Fliess-Kopplung in Gebirgstrennflächen zu entwickeln. Die Versuche zeigen, dass die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit zuerst abnimmt, dann aber schnell wieder zunimmt sobald die maximale Scherfestigkeit erreicht ist. Das vorgestellte Modell bildet die Testergebnisse relativ gut nach. Es zeigt auch, dass es schwierig ist, das lokale Cubic Law im Initialstadium der Scherbeanspruchung anzuwenden, in dem die Variationen selektiver Fliesswege gross ist. Les essaies hydro-mécaniques couplés en cisaillement sont réalisés grâce à un appareil éxperimental prototype et un modèle de couplage hydro-mécanique utilisant le S.I.G (systeme d&apos;information géographique) développé dans le but d&apos;évaluer les propriétés hydro-mécaniques des joint rocheux. Les résultats indiquent que la conductivité hydraulique des joints décroit puis augmente rapidement en se rapprochant du pic de cisaillement. Le modèle proposé simule relativement bien les résultats expérimentaux ; mais indique également qu’il est difficile d’appliquer localement la loi cubique au début du cisaillement où, les changements d’orientation dans le réseau d&apos;écoulement sont considerables.

?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.

It looks at the application of drycrete and discusses the factors that led to the introduction of wet fibre reinforced shotcrete. The logistical constraints of getting shotcrete material underground will be solved by the development of an underground batch plant, using run of mine waste rock as an aggregate.

In the early days of underground coal mining, the use of explosives to break coal resulted in a large number of disastrous methane and coal dust explosions and consequential loss of life. Research by the British, French, US authorities, amongst others, introduced many practices that significantly reduced the occurrence of such incidences. The use of explosives designed to be safe in a methane atmosphere, plus the creation of a second free face were two such practices which became commonly used in coal mines all over the world including southern Africa. With its associated coal cutting equipment and labour, the cost of creating a second free face is significant and this, together with the constant drive to reduce mining costs in a competitive market, causes mine management to regularly question the need for the second free face. Also, the safety and nature of permitted explosives has changed considerably since the days of black powder and nitroglycerine-based explosives with the introduction of water-based explosives. In southern Africa mining regulations pertaining to the blasting of coal has its origins in British research which was largely done in the first half of the twentieth century. More recent research by the US Bureau of Mine has resulted in a deeper understanding of some of the mechanisms of methane ignition by explosives and suggests that some of the earlier regulations can be relaxed to a certain extent without compromising safety. This paper gives an overview of the original research done in Europe and the more recent work in the USA, to give mine management and regulatory authorities a deeper understanding of the important safety issues when using explosives in a methane atmosphere. It also suggests that blasting off the solid is no less safe than using a second free face providing certain safety procedures are followed.

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

To remain at the leading edge, in any business, depends on accurate but flexible design thereby allowing operational managers to provide alternatives to improve their operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver to plan, with optimum economics. Mining is no different, with falling prices and escalating costs, improved margins become the focal objective. There are many ways to achieve this, ranging from operational efficiency improvements through production scenarios to planning initiatives. Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the NPV of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10?40 km in length. These road networks are often not optimally designed and maintained and as a result, identifying and remediating road functional defects is problematic. Most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. This paper presents a haul road maintenance management system which utilizes an assessment of rolling resistance based on a functional performance evaluation of a haul road, together with mine haul truck operating cost models to derive the optimal frequency of road maintenance. A typical application is presented which illustrates the potential of the technique to manage maintenance as and where needed with resultant reduction in total road user costs and an improvement in service provided for the road user. One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.
