A self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed to provide complete respiratory protection for a miner in an irrespirable atmosphere. The apparatus has the desired features of comfort, reliability, maintainability, and quick-donning capability. The apparatus is packaged in a moistureproof envelope and is protected in a shock absorbing, fiberglass resin carrying case. The apparatus is a small, lightweight, one-time-use device that can be readily worn on a miner's belt, requires no maintenance and is designed to have a shelf life of five years and a carrying life of three years. It is deployed to the use position in a period of 15 to 30 seconds. Man tests conducted in-house and at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) testing laboratories established that this unit meets all performance requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 11, Subchapter B, Subpart H (CFR 30, Part 11) for respiratory protective devices. The unit, which has received joint approval (TC-13F-37) on a prototype basis from the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) and NIOSH has: (1) Ten-minute service life under escape conditions. (2) Thirty-minute service life when the wearer is at rest. (3) Peak-to-peak breathing resistance of less than our inches water column height. (4) Inspired gas temperature of less than 135°F. (5) Breathing gas contents greater than 19.5 volume per cent of oxygen and less than 2.5 per cent carbon dioxin. (6) A weight (complete in carrying case) of 2.75 lbs. (7) A carrying case size of 6-1/2"x 5-1/8"x 3-1/8".

The temperature dependency of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium and of nitrogen, 100° to 1,000° K, is correlated with empirical equations, and the temperature and composition dependencies of the low-density viscosity coefficients, ?°T, of helium-nitrogen mixtures are correlated with the Chapman-Enskog expressions by using the Lennard-Jones (6:12) potential function. The residual viscosity, ?T,P - ?°T (the difference between the viscosity of a compressed gas and the dilute gas at a given temperature), was found to be a function of the thermal pressure coefficient, (?P/?T)V, and two parameters, a and 1, which are characteristic of gas composition. The equation ?T, P = ?°T + a [(?P/?T)V]ß represented 1,340 higher pressure experimental viscosity values with a mean absolute deviation of 0.86 percent, and this equation was used to compute viscosities of the gaseous helium-nitrogen system for a range of temperatures and pressures including those encountered in Bureau of Mines helium purification processes and in a crude-helium conservation gas reservoir. Tabular viscosities for helium, nitrogen, and 13 helium-nitrogen mixtures are presented for 110 temperatures, 133° to 740' K, and 49 pressures in the range 1 to 240 atmospheres. The accuracy of the tabulated viscosities varies because correlation parameters were obtained from experimental data of unequal reliability. It is estimated that uncertainties in the computed viscosity values are ±5 percent for the region 325° to 740° K, ±2 percent for the region 183° to 325° K, and ±5 percent for temperatures below 183° K. The latter uncertainty may rise to y10 percent as critical conditions are approached.

[The Bureau of Mines well-bore caliper was designed to provide an instrument that could be operated through 2-inch tubing, which 'a used particularly in many input wells on water-flooding projects of eastern, Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. It should find wide application elsewhere under many other conditions where it has not been possible previously to make caliper logs with the larger probes used on other instruments. The caliper has three additional advantages over other instruments of this type: (1) It measures 4 radii (up to 18 inches) 90° apart with an accuracy of ± 1/4 inch; (2) the measuring arms can be opened and closed at will by remote control; and (3) it is run and operated on a single-conductor, armored electric cable (Amergraph, type 1-H-0). The caliper probe is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length. The electrical control and measuring circuits are encased in a stainless-steel tubular case. Measuring arms, made of 5/16-inch aluminum tubing, are attached near the lower end of the instrument. Distances the arms are extended are indicated t the surface by a meter calibrated to read directly in inches. Depths at which the radii measurements are taken are indicated by a wireline depth indicator on the cable-reeling. The instrument is not affected by pressure or temperature, it can be run open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. This paper describes and illustrates the instrument and outlines the operating procedures. A bibliography at the end of the report gives references to articles and patents on the development and use of other well-bore calipers.]

As part of its work on converting coal to fluid fuels, the Federal Bureau of Mines has been studying the synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. A fluidized bed of nitrided, fused-iron catalyst has been operated successfully to produce high yields of oxygenated compounds. Trouble-free operation continued for over 800 hours, and the test was terminated voluntarily. About 85 percent of the fresh feed was converted when the unit was operated at a space velocity of 500 hr.-1, a 12:1 recycle-to-fresh-feed-gas ratio, a 300-p. s. i. g. pressure, and a temperature of 252° C. When operating at a fresh-feed-gas space velocity of 1,000 hr.-l and a 9:1 ratio of recycle to fresh gas, conversion of fresh feed was 68 percent, and the product yield was 235.9 grams per cubic meter of synthesis gas converted. The oxygenate and C5 and heavier hydrocarbon yield was 110.6 grams per cubic meter of gas converted, 83 percent of this was oxygenates. The atom ratio of N:Fe of the catalyst, initially 0.455, decreased to 0.288 by the end of the 800-hour experiment. Nevertheless, the yield of oxygenated compounds per cubic meter of H2 + CO converted at the end of the run was approximately the same as that obtained 500 hours earlier with identical operating conditions. X-ray analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only ?-iron carbonitride was present. Sieve analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only 2 percent of fines was produced during the reduction, nitriding, and synthesis.

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

"INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. "A New Mica Company in China A report has been received from the American Consulate at Chungking, China, to the affect that a new company has been organized to operate a mica mine north of Ta-chien-lu, in the province of Ssu-Chuan. The company, which is entirely under Chinese management and control, has a working capital of $10,000. While comparatively new, the mine has been worked before, and apparently with some success. The mica is said to be of good quality. It is claimed that the deposit will supply a limited amount of mica that will cut in pieces a foot square or over, and larger quantities of smaller sizes. The chief difficulty is transportation, for it is reported that a ten days' journey, part of it over mountain trails, will be necessary to transport the mica from the mine to Yachow, the nearest practical waterway. It is probable, therefore, that the output of the mine will be limited.Necessity for Careful Trimming and Grading of MicaA recent report to the Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa, Canada, by Acting Trade Commissioner C. G. Venus, London, England, contains information which is of vital interest to mica producers in the United States. It is pointed out that mica exports from Canada to England show a gradual decline dur¬ing recent years, the figures being as follows: 1913- 1,383 cwt: 1914 - 1,225 cwt: 1915 - 1,864 cwt: 1S16 - 879 cwt: 1917 444 cwt: 1918 - 480 cwt. Shipments from India to England, on the other hand, show a steady increase from 40,178 cwt. in 1913 to 66,401 cwt, in 1918."

An inusual job in controlling a gas well was executed on No. 1 well, Inland Oil and Refining Co., situated on the Alkali Butte structure, Freemont County, Wyoming. The work was done by the company in cooperation with the . S. Bureau of Minos, and resulted in a fuel saving of $5,000 in one season and of a repair job estimated at $15,000, or a total of $21,000. The woll had an open flow of 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day with a rock pressure of 560 pounds per square inch. A string of 6-1/4 inch casing with a toothed shoe was set on the cap rock above the gas sand at 2181 feet. Then the well was shut in, the gas worked out around both the 6-1/4 inch and 6-1/4 inch strings, breaking through the ground surface at several points under the derrick. Casing troubles encountered while drilling made it unsafe to attempt Coving the 6-1/4 inch string. Moreover, it was important from the standpoint of good management to make the gas from this well immediately available for fuel in other operations and, in addition, to save the gas from wasting. An ordinary mudding and cementing job would have necessitated sitting down this well for probably two months out of a very short operating season. For these rousons it was determined to mud the well, if possible, between the 6 and 8 inch strings by pumping mud fluid through the connection from the gas clamps. The gas clamps used wore of ordinary construction with a side outlet, making them equivalent to a Braden-hoad. When the mud fluid was pumped through the gas clamp into the space between the two strings, it began to appear inside the 6-1/4 inch string. It apparently entered the well either around the toothed shoe or through a "line sawed" leak in the string and was blown out of the well as fast as it was pumped in. In order to stop the leaks, about a half a gunny sack of finely chopped bull ropa was fed with the mud between the casings as before. The hemp gathered around the valves of the mud pump to some extent, and it also stuck in the casing-head fittings a few times. An obstruction in the casing- head would be removed by permitting the woll to "blow back" for a few seconds, and one in the pump valves, by removing the valves when necessary. In two days' time sufficient hemp and mud had been pumped into these strings to kill external and internal pressure. The wall was shut in and allowed to stand over night. This Final Report covers the work performed for Contract No. H0377043, "Cables for Face Equipment" from August 1, 1977 to April 1, 1981. It reports the findings in three areas of research: cable protection, circuit-breakers, and high-voltage cable couplers. Laboratory and analytical studies have been conducted in the three areas to determine proper circuit-breaker settings, cable sizes, and coupler performance. Also, an extensive field-monitoring program was established to relate in-mine epxerience to laboratory findings. Further, various pieces of equipment was designed for laboratory testing, particularly in the area of cable reeling and unreeling.

When location guidelines are followed in choosing sites for fixed point velocity transducers for use in underground coal mine monitoring, mine air turbulence intensities <11% are generally expected at those sites. The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation to determine the effect of turbulence intensities <11% on vortex shedding sensors and transducers. Measurements were made at velocity levels of interest for underground coal mine monitoring use (?200, ?500, ?1,000, ?1,500 ft/min). The effect of grid-produced turbulence intensities (2% to ?14%) on the output of vortex-shedding air-velocity transducers was less than ±10%.

This paper describing the mining methods employed by the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., operating the Morning mine at Mullan, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The daily tonnage produced at the Morning mine, including that mined by leasers, is 1,100 tons. Mine run of ore will average 9.1 per cent lead, 5.8 per cent zinc, and 4.4 ounces silver per ton. A stull set and fill method of mining is employed.

This paper describes the methods and costs, in units of labor end materials, of sinking a 7 compartment vertical shaft 1,261 feet through a fractured, water-saturated formation. The shaft, designed for hoisting 2,500 tons a day, is at Friedensville, Lehigh County, Pa., approximately 6 miles south of Allentown and Bethlehem. It was sunk by the E. J. Longyear Co. under contract to the New Jersey Zinc Co. Preparation for shaft sinking W8A begun July 1, 1947, and sinking was completed August 18, 1952. A total of 604,858 man hours was required to sink the shaft.

Six different types of blasting caps, mainly of the type used in coal mines, were evaluated to determine both their 1lF and DC characteristics. Two of the caps were of foreign manufacture. All the American made caps had "no-fire" (0.1% firing probability with 95% confidence, as determined by the Bruceton test) levels above 0.04 watts. One of the caps of foreign manufacture had a "no-fire" level of 0.023 watts. A worst case analysis of blasting cap pick up of RF power in coal mines was performed and safe distance curves were generated.

Primary standard gas mixtures were developed for more accurate calibration of analytical instruments at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center and for calibration of analytical instruments used in the helium conservation program. A 10-kg-capacity balance is used to weigh a 4-kg metal cylinder filled to high pressure (1,800 psi maximum) with the component gases of the desired mixture. At 1,800 psi, a cylinder contains about 60 g of helium, or 420 g of nitrogen. An accuracy of ±0.05 mole-percent or better is claimed for each component in the mixtures.

This is one of a series of papers on placer mining in the western United States. The author has endeavored to give a general outline of the available placer deposits in Boise County, Idaho, together with a description of current practices and the recovery costs of the principal producers. The paper is based on a field examination by the author in May and June 1937. Boise County (fig. 1) is in the southwestern part of Idaho. It has a maximum length of 60 miles, a maximum width of 42 miles, and an area of approximately 1,600 square miles.

The Madison RARE II study area has four prospects with identified resources. These are listed in table 1 and are described in the following text. A high potential for Sillimanite exists at the Placer Creek occurrence (fig. 1, no. 7) and potential for phosphate rack in all areas underlain by the Phosphoria Formation. Some prospects exhibit minor potential for copper, lead, zinc, silver, and gold in the southern portion and very minor potential in the northern portion. Deposits in the northern end also have low potential for rare earth, asbestiform anthophyllite, or kyanite group minerals (including sillimanite).

The objective of this research by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the technical feasibility and associated pilot data for drying minus 1/4-in coal with microwave energy at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The drying data were obtained experimentally on three coal types: bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The experiments were performed with a custom-designed conveyorized microwave oven having a continuous power capability of 12 kW. Drying efficiencies near the theoretical maximum of 1.54 kg of water per kilowatt hour of energy input were achieved for two coals and two sizes; overall drying efficiencies averaged 77 pct.

Ten years ago we surveyed in "Uspekhi Khimii" the mechanism of the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 (1).5 With new data obtained since then, mostly by Soviet researchers, our previous work (2), dealing with new forms and catalysts of the synthesis, is brought up to elate by reviewing research in this field. FORMATION OF CARBIDES The hypothesis that carbides are intermecliates in the synthesis assumes that carbon monoxide reacts with the metals of the eighth group and that this reaction is connected with the reversible reaction 2CO[=]C +CO2 (1) in a certain range of temperatures (3).

Offgrade chromite concentrate, with a Cr-Fe ratio of 1.3 to 1.4 has been successfully smelted to produce useful ferroalloys. The Cr-Fe ratio is not improved, but the alloys can be used without a too drastic change in normal steel-mill practice. The ordinary high-carbon ferrochrome has been successfully produced by smelting under highly acid smelting conditions. An alloy containing 50 percent chromium was produced at a power consumption of 4,490 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. Alloys containing 20 percent silicon were made by direct smelting chromite concentrate and silica.
