While underground coal technology has progressed over time, regulations on coal dust have not kept up ? the most recent rules are more than 80 years old. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a joint survey recently on coal particle ranges as measured in US coal mine samples. In underground coal mines, dust explosions are prevented by the addition of enough rock dust (usually limestone) to make the total dust mixture inert. The rock dust acts as a heat sink for the dispersed dust mixture by reducing the temperature below the value needed to propagate an explosion. Federal regulations require 65% in combustible content in intake airways and 80% incombustible content in return airways, where the coal dust is assumed to be finer in size. The regulations also require an additional 1% incombustible for each 0.1% methane in the ventilating air in intakes and 0.4% additional incombustible for each 0.1% methane in returns.

This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

Bolting large sheets of wire mesh screen (WMS) to the roof of underground mines prevents injuries due to rock falls. However, WMS can be heavy and awkward to lift and transport, and may result in significant spinal loading. Accordingly, six male subjects (mean age =45.8 years + 7.5 SD) were recruited to lift WMS in a laboratory investigation of the biomechanical demands. Biomechanical modeling was used to estimate external moments about L5-S1 for sixteen lifting tasks, using two sizes of WMS. Full-size WMS involved a two-person lift, while half-size WMS involved a one-person lift. Lifts were performed under 168 cm and 213 cm vertical space. Restriction in vertical space increased the maximum L5-S1 extensor moment from 254 to 274 Nm and right lateral bending moment from 195 to 251 Nm. Lifting full sheets of screen (as opposed to half sheets) resulted in an average 33 Nm increase in L5-S1 extensor moment. The L5-S1 extensor moment was increased by an average of 44 Nm (18%) when lifting screens positioned flat on the floor compared to an upright position. Relevance to industry: Large flexible materials are commonly lifted in industrial work environments, and may involve the efforts of two or more workers. The current study examines the low back loading associated with lifting large flexible screens and presents recommendations to reduce spine loading.

In a search for improved methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of coal, monoethanolamine (MEA) was found to be effective in extracting tar acids from coal tar distillates derived from a subbitunwous and a lignite coal. Patch extractions showed that both yield and purity of the extracted acids improved with increasing volume ratios of monoethanolamine to tar acid, varied from 1:4 to 8:1. Yield improved, but purity decreased as the concentration of monoethanolamine was changed from 30 to 70 volume-percent, and as the concentration of tar acid in distillate was increased ad from 14 to 45 percent. In a continuous countercurrent extraction employing a double solvent (monoethanolamine and hexane) approximately 80 percent of the tar acids was extracted from 170° to 350° C. tar distillate when using 1.6:1 volume ratios of amine:tar acids. Tar acids isolated from his extract, although of improved purity, contained appreciable quantities of neutral oils and some tar bases. Aqueous monoethanolamine was not effective for extracting the last 10 to 15 percent of tar acids in 170° to 350° C. distillate oil from lignite coal. The highest yield of isolated tar acids and the best recovery of monoethanolamine were obtained by diluting the extract with water and saturating with C02. Some losses of solvent were encountered when aqueous monoethanolamine solutions were heated through decomposition of the amine with the liberation of ammonia.

Several processes being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide new and more efficient uses for coal require practical methods for removing dust from hot gases. Filters provide such means. The efficiency of filters made of aluminum silicate fibers and porous stainless steel was determined. The results obtained with the fibers were previously reported.5 In this investigation tests were made with three porosities of stainless steel filter material (grades C, D, and E) at a gas flow of 1,000 std. c.f.h./sq. ft. of filter, temperatures of 75° and 1,000° F., and dust loadings (as represented by cumulative dust fed) of 100, 1,000, and 10,000 gr./sq. ft. of filter. Pressure drop during the runs ranged from 0.1 to 21 in. of mercury, and dust removal from 25 to 99.93 pct. Filters having the finest pores gave the greatest pressure drop and percentage of dust removal; however, their dust-holding capacity was slightly lower. Usually, their ability to remove a higher percentage of dust at the same pressure drop more than compensated for the slightly lower dust-holding capacity. With increase in temperature, for the same weight rate of flow of gas, the pressure drop increased and the percentage of dust removal decreased. The effect of temperature was probably due to the accompanying change in the linear velocity and viscosity of the gas.

The Bureau of Mines investigated hot-rolling and forging characteristics of experimental ductile iron castings, both sand and permanent-mold, made with charges containing up to 70 pct foundry pig iron and 95 pct steelmaking pig iron. Between 1,550° and 1,950° F, most castings could be rolled to 90-pct reduction or forged to 70-pct reduction without serious cracking. Charge and composition have less bearing on workability than on subsequent properties. Permanent mold castings could be worked as readily as sand castings at 1,750° and 1,950° F. Plasticity improved with temperature. Small billets were also forged cold to 50-pct reduction without cracking. With equivalent nodularity, composition affects properties of wrought materials by altering matrix structure and strength. Properties vary with reduction and improve with increasing working temperature. Rolled material has high strength and anisotropy, and low ductility, particularly in the trans-verse direction. Annealing reduces strength and improves ductility, but anisotropy persists. At 70-pct reduction, impact resistance in the longitudinal direction is about twice that in the transverse. Annealing roughly doubles impact resistance. Deformation enhances damping capacity. The feasibility of die-forging and bar-rolling of ductile iron was evaluated in trial tests conducted under a Bureau contract. Although workability and ductility of ductile iron are inferior to those of steel, more advantage could be taken of ductile iron's plasticity to work rough shapes to final dimensions.

A generalized flow diagram is presented in Figure 1, which shows the relationship of major model functions. This chart does not necessarily represent the anatomy of the computer program, but is designed to illustrate the informational interchange between major model functions. The related flow-charts-and computer program are listed in Parts I and II, Appendix A, respectively. Mine Car Stations The mine car stations are the activity centers for the model. The locomotive logic structure is designed to provide these stations with adequate cars and to clear them of car buildup. The model is designed to simulate a three stage haulage situation which suggests the need to differentiate station levels by type numbers. These are: a) TYPE 1 stations - mine cars are loaded here; b) TYPE 2 stations - intermediate stop and storage for mine cars; c) TYPE 3 stations - all mine cars that are stored here leave mine; and d) TYPE 4 stations - mine portal. TYPES 1, 2, and 3 have all loaded cars assigned to an ascending TYPE as their next destination. In input, if single stage haulage is designated, TYPES 1 and 3 do not exist, and if two stage haulage is called for, TYPES 2 and 3 are absent. Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine's 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another' s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

Electrorefined vanadium with additions of up to 5 percent by weight of yttrium, cerium , lanthanum , praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium was melted to ingots in a nonconsumable electrode arc in a helium atmosphere . The ingots were rolled into strips and evaluated for the effect of the alloying elements on hardness , tensile strength , ductility , recrystallization temperature , and microstructure . Except for samarium , average additions of alloying elements of 1 to 2 weight - percent resulted in the retention of 0.12 to 1.05 weight - percent in the alloys and reduced the ultimate tensile strength from about 48,000 to approximately 30,600 psi . The corresponding yield stress (0.2 percent offset ) was reduced from about 40,700 to approximately 20 , 200 psi . Diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) was reduced from 117 to an average of 62 kg /mm² . Increased malleability at room temperature resulted with yttrium and all rare - earth- metal additions , except samarium , particularly with more than 0.25 weight - percent additions . Decreasing oxygen contents corresponded with the changes noted in the mechanical properties of the alloys . The recrystallization temperature of electrorefined vanadium was reduced from approximately 950 ° to 800 ° C. Yttrium or a rare- earth metal content , except samarium , in excess of 0.1 weight - percent in vanadium produced a second phase suggestive of an eutectic which indicated a possible maximum solubility of less than 0.1 weight - percent for both room and elevated temperatures .

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."

Occurrences of titanium, zircon, and other heavy minerals are widespread in Florida. Deposits concentrated as "heavy sands" by wave and wind action have been mined an or near Atlantic coastal beaches since 1916. An important inland concentration at Trail Ridge; .believed, to have formed along an ancient share line, was disclosed by preliminary investigations (1947) by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes investigations to determine the extent and grade of "heavy-sand" concentrations in other inland stabilized dune areas in the central and northeastern parts of the peninsular region of the State (fig. 1). Portions of the central highlands south of Trail Ridge and terraces and dunes in the coastal lowlands region, east and northeast of the ridge were investigated. Holes were drilled in 10 areas (see table 1 and fig. 2) along State and County roads and on private property. They were spaced 250 to 2,000 feet. apart to obtain a cross-sectional picture of "heavy-sand" content in the dune areas. These sections were generally placed in east-west directions normal to the general trend Of the peninsula to intercept one or more of the ancient shore lines in the various areas (figs. 3 to 13, incl.). A total of 433 drive piped and 333 jet holes were drilled, and 7,293 bulk and core samples were taken. Intermediate holes were placed at closer intervals when field analysis indicated 1 percent or more of heavy minerals present. All of the holes drilled and the analysis of samples that contain 1 percent or more of heavy minerals are listed in table 2. Profiles (figs. 14 to 20, inclusive) show the more favorable concentrations, which are irregular in outline and erratic in mineral content. The highest concentrations averaged 1.0 to more than 2.0 percent heavy-mineral content, but a few individual hole samples exceeded 3.0 percent in grade.

The real gross national product (GNP) expanded by 2.3% during the second quarter, down from the anomalous 4.4% growth rate in the previous 3 months. If the expansion continues through October, it will have lasted 5 yr and become the second longest in 40 yr.2 As in the first quarter, improvement in U.S. exports played a role in the continuing--albeit slow--growth. More than 2 yr of declines in the dollar relative to currencies of other industrial countries have contributed to a slight reduction in the trade deficit in real (volume) terms, as real net exports of goods and services rose $1.9 billion (table 1). Exports grew a strong 12.1% while imports, which had fallen the previous two quarters, rose 7.4%. Manufactured goods and petroleum products accounted for most of the second quarter import increase. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that the volume of crude oil and refined products imports in the first half of 1987 surpassed those in the same period last year by 7.5%, reflecting falling domestic production and higher than expected demand. Expenditure on durable goods--those that last at least 3 yr-by both consumers and producers also contributed to the second quarter expansion. Personal consumption of durable goods rose 9.0%, after having fallen the two previous quarters. Motor vehicle purchases accounted for most of the second quarter increase and the first quarter decrease. Sales of automobiles surged in the last quarter of 1986, as consumers rushed to capture the sales tax deduction that was eliminated on January 1. Sales fell in the first quarter of 1987, but have now moved closer to the trend line exhibited in the first three quarters of 1986. Automobiles accounted for half the 0.8% July gain in retail sales, and two-thirds of the 1.4% June gain. Producers durable equipment purchases also rose this quarter, accounting for the increase in nonresidential fixed investment.

The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the Gibbs free energies of formation of chromous fluoride (CrF2), chromic fluoride (CrF3), and chromium (II,III) fluorides (CrF2.40 and CrF2.45) with high-temperature galvanic cells employing calcium fluoride doped with 1 mole-pct yttrium fluoride as the electrolyte. Free-energy changes were obtained from open-circuit potential measurements for the following cells: Cr, CrF2 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (a) NiO, NiF2 // CaF2 // CrF3 , Cr203 (b) CrF2 , CrF2.40 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (c) and CrF2 ?45 , CrF3 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (d) with the following overall reactions Cr(s) + NiF2 (s) = Ni(s) + CrF2 (s) (1) 3NiO(s) + 2CrF3 (s) = 3NiF2 (s) + Cr203 (s) (2) 5CrF2 (s) + NiF2 (s) = 5CrF2.4O (s) + Ni(s) (3) and 3.64CrF2.45 + NiF2 (s) = 3.64CrF3 (s) + Ni (s) . (4) These results were combined with the best available literature values of ?Gf° of NiF2, NiO, and Cr203 to deduce Gibbs free energies of formation for the chromium fluorides expressed as follows: ?Gf°(CrF2) = -179.31 + 24.33 X 10-3T ± 0.43 kcal-mole. The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. The precious stones rubies and sapphires are transparent varieties of the mineral corundum . Essentially they are aluminum oxide , but the aluminum is often replaced. by small amounts of chromium , titanium , or iron . The chromium is said to give a red color , titanium a blue , and iron a yellow . True rubies range from rose to a somewhat purplish red and are sometimes termed " oriental rubies " to distinguish them from spinel rubies , stones of inferior hardness , density , and value . " Oriental rubies " are very rare , and the so-called " pigeon's blood" variety is the most valuable . Sapphires normally range in color from palest blue to deepest indigo , but actually all precious varieties of corundum of any other color than red are called sapphires . The most esteemed tint is like that of the blue cornflower . Colorless corundum of gem quality is called white sapphire ; the yellow variety is described either as yellow or as golden sapphire ; and the pale pink is classed as pink sapphire . The word " oriental " is also used as a prefix in naming varieties of corumdum of less popular colors . For instance , oriental emerald is used for green corundum, oriental topaz for yellow , and oriental amethyst for violet to purple varieties . The chief physical characteristics of rubies and sapphires are hardness , adamantine luster , and moderately high specific gravity ( 3.9 to 4.1) . Next to the diamond, corundum is the hardest of all minerals ; in fact , the sapphire is number 9 on Moh's scale , ranking between the topaz and the diamond. Rubies crystallize in 6-sided prisms terminated by flat faces and other varieties of corundum with twelve inclined faces , six above and six below , meeting in a girdle . Corundum is doubly refractive , with a direction of single refraction running parallel to the edge of the prism . The refractive indexes are very constant, the ordinary index ranging from 1.766 to 1.774 and the extraordinary index from 1.757 to 1.765. The double refraction always remains the same.

A mineral resource survey of the 236-mil (611-km2) Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn wilderness study area (RARE 11 Areas No. 1-155 G, Gallatin Divide; and H, Hyalite) between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers in Montana, indicates there are phosphate rock and petrified wood resources (fig. 1). The area also has some potential for oil, gas, and geothermal resources. Stone and alluvium are abundant but appear to have little potential for development because other sources are available nearer to markets.
