4.1 Introduction Using methods outlined in previous sections of this report, programs were written and/or obtained to: i) select best combinations of "a" and "k" for up to 8 different value parameters, ii) calculate available and unavailable ore tonnages and other statistics, and iii) produce contour maps of various parameter characteristics and available tonnages on a line printer. All the above programs are written in Fortran IV for execu¬tion on IBM 360/370 computers. 4.2 Calculation of Coal Reserves The Ore Reserve program suite consists of the following sections: (a) UNIT 1: This unit is a subroutine called by Unit 2 to determine values for "a" and "k" from the given data. This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the conditions required to sinter a pyrrhotite calcine into a product suitable for iron blast furnace feed . The calcine , a fine - grained iron oxide produced by roasting sulfide flotation concentrate , analyzed about 60 percent iron and 1 percent sulfur . Sintering of the calcine without prior pelletization was not successful whereas firing of preformed calcine charges yielded acceptable sinter products . Batch tests were made to study the effect of the following variables on the sinter quality : Size of green pellets in the charge , quantity and type of internal carbonaceous fuel used , depth of sinter bed , moisture content of the charge , flux additions , and binder additions . The batch and continuous sinter tests showed that minus 1 / 4 - inch pellets prepared from a mixture of the calcine , coke , dolomite , and water gave sinter cakes analyzing 57 to 61 percent iron and 0.05 to 0.02 percent sulfur .

The purpose of this research was to develop a method to remove copper and tin from the magnetic fraction of incinerated municipal refuse, as recovered by the Bureau of Mines pilot plant in College Park, Md. Copper, present in the scrap in a metallic form bonded to ferrous objects, was amenable to leaching in cupric ammonium carbonate solution. Copper levels in small 5-to 10-lb lots of treated scrap were reduced from the initial level, 0.5 to 0.6 pct, to 0.1 to 0.2 pct. Larger lots of scrap (100 lb) were treated less effectively because of poor contact of solution and scrap. Oxidation in the air or in aerated aqueous solution was applied to liberate tin from the dilute solid solution present on the surface of incinerated tinplate. Shredding of air-oxidized scrap or caustic leaching of scrap oxidized in solution reduced tin levels from the initial 0.25-pct level to about 0.1 pct.

This report describes a tool to engage and/or place a Bureau of Mines type gage to measure borehole deformation in a horizontal , 1½ - inch - diameter , stress relief borehole . The tool was successfully used at a borehole depth of 105 feet . Practical usage up to borehole depths of 200 feet might be realized . The tool was designed to work inside EX- size ( 1½ - inch ID ) diamond - drill drive casing used as drill rod and through which the deformation gage is guided into an EX- size stress relief borehole . Through laboratory experiments it was found that by exercising a reasonable amount of care the deformation gage could be placed at a point within a ± .01 foot distance of a predetermined depth in a horizontal EX- size hole and that the deformation measuring piston or plunger of the gage could be oriented in the borehole within 0.5 ° of a preselected angle of orientation in a vertical plane .

A continuous method has been developed for preparing thiolacetic acid . Acetic anhydride and hydrogen sulfide are passed concurrently over an amine ion- exchange resin , under 20 - psi pressure . The thiolacetic acid , a product of the reaction , is flashed continuously from the crude reaction mixture and is purified by fractional distillation . The yield of thiolacetic acid is in excess of 80 percent based on the acetic anhydride charged . INTRODUCTION In the synthesis of reference compounds needed in the identification of sulfur compounds in petroleum , thiolacetic acid has become an important reagent because of its use in the synthesis of thiols by addition to appropriate olefins : R - CH = CH₂ + CH3 - COSH R- CH2 - CH2 - S - COCH R - CH2 - CH₂ - SH + CH3COONa NaOH (1 ) The commonly used procedures for its preparation , as described by Clark and Hartman (1 )4 and by Ellingboe (2 ) , are based on the batchwise reaction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen sulfide :

This paper briefly describes the progress in mine safety in the United States, with emphasis on recent events that have followed since the explosion at the Sago Mine in January 2006. Legislation following the mine accidents last year and areas of work carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) related to the accidents are discussed. American coal production in 2006 was 1,150 million short tons. Most of this coal is consumed domestically, with annual exports of coal about 50 million tons. One third of annual production is produced at surface mines and the rest from underground. This coal is produced by about 82,000 miners working at 1,400 coal mines. Major improvements in coal mine safety have been made in the US since the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The fatal injury rate in underground coal mines between 1977 and 2004 was reduced by 47.8% to 0.036. The annual number of fatalities dropped from 112 to 14 during that period. Likewise, the non-fatal days-lost injury rate was reduced by 42.6% from 10.87 to 6.24. The improvements in mine safety during this period can be seen in the graph of underground coal mine explosion fatalities and injuries from 1980 to present, which is shown in Figure 1. Between 1984 and 1993 (9 year period) there were 5 explosions and one major mine fire, for a total of 55 fatalities. Over the seven year period from 1993 to 1999 there were no fatalities from coal mine fires and explosions. However, in the six years since 2000 there have been 5 explosions and one fire, which have caused 37 fatalities. [ ]

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The equation developed for predicting percolation rates is as follows: 1nP20 = 11.39147 + 2.853422 1n(VR X D10) + 0.1747436 VR X Cu -178.8039 D10 X D50 + 311.7034 (DSO )3, (1) where P20 = percolation rate, inches per hour at 20° C; correction factors for other temperatures are given in the text, VR = void ratio, dimensionless, D10 = effective size (diameter in millimeters of the 10-percent-finer grain size), Cu = coefficient of uniformity (ratio of the diameter of the 60-percent-finer grain size over D10), D50 = average size (diameter in millimeters of the 50-percent-finer grain size), and In = natural logarithm (log to the base e). The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop economical mineral dressing processes for removing objectionable quantities of impurities, such as quartz and pyrite, from refractory clay deposits in east central Missouri. The presence of excessive quartz in these clays causes crazing. Pyrite causes bloating and unsightly dark blobs on the surface of fired refractory brick. The iron concentration in the proper state of oxidation may also act as nucleation centers for carbon crystal growth which can result in bursting of the refractory. Numerous deposits, representing a very large tonnage, have been examined and prospected by various refractories companies and found to contain impurities in objectionable quantities. Upgrading these clays would greatly extend our reserves of high-quality refractory clays. Wet-tabling and wet-cyclone concentration were found to be effective for removal of impurities from clays. Of the two methods, wet-cyclone concentra¬tion would be cheaper and more effective. Although wet-tabling improved the refractory properties of each clay, beneficiation by wet-cyclone produced clays of superior quality. Clay recoveries by wet-cycloning ranged from 56.1 to 81.8 percent of the weight of the crude samples, and the beneficiated clays contained from 71.9 to 94.4 percent of the total alumina. The pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) was increased from 1 to 3 cones by wet-cycloning. The beneficiated clays also met the reheat shrinkage requirements on refiring to 1,400° C. Missouri is one of the major domestic sources of fare clay. In addition to deposits of high-grade refractory clays, there arc many deposits that contain small percentages of impurities, which render the clays unfit for the production of high-heat-duty firebrick. Development of methods to beneficiate these submarginal clays to usable materials would greatly increase commercial fire clay resources.

This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

The Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a coal-fired gas turbine plant initially developed by the Locomotive Development Committee, (LDC) of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. The Bureau is redesigning the turbine blading and some of the auxiliary equipment, and is reerecting, the plant at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Coal Research Center. The present goal is a 1,500-hour run at virtually the same operating conditions used by the LDC in their final 1,100-hour test with the turbine. This will allow the Bureau to properly evaluate the new blade design. Erosion of the turbine blades (particularly the roots) by ash in the hot gases from the combustion of coal was the most serious problem in extended operation in earlier experimental work. New blades made of Stellite6 are being fabricated for the stator and rotor, and armored wear strips of titanium carbide will be inserted in the blades at the areas of probable maximum ash velocity and concentration. The trailing edges of the rotor and stator blades are being thickened and thinned, respectively, to induce the ash to travel to the casing and prevent it from returning to the base of the rotor blades. The first stage rotor and second stage stator blades are being removed to provide an annular space for maximum quantities of coal ash to centrifuge to the casing. Additional blades will be added to most of the rows in the stator to stop secondary flow of dust-laden gas toward the rotor. A contract has been awarded for fabrication of the new blades. The 1,500-hour run will be started as soon as the new blades are installed.

An 18-in-diam column water elutriator was designed, tested, and operated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering nonferrous mixed metals from automobile shredder rejects. The waver elutriator separated metals from nonmetals contained in shredded nonmagnetic rejects. The unit was constructed and integrated into a local automobile shredding operation. Nonmagnetic rejects from the automobile shredder were fed onto the surface of a column of rising water. Dense materials fell through the rising water and were collected as a sink product at the bottom of the column; medium-density materials were removed as an intermediate product in a water flow through a discharge port located between the overflow and sink; and light materials were immediately carried out in the overflowing water at the top of the column as a float product. Nearly 99 pct of the mixed metals were recovered from the nonmagnetic rejects as a 70-pct-metal concentrate. Other operating conditions yielded a 93.7-pct-pure-metal product resulting in a 93.1-pct metal recovery. Float rejects are combustibles, light plastics, foam rubber, and minimal amounts of coated and uncoated copper wire. The middling discharge contained mainly medium-density rubber, plastics, glass, rock, coated and uncoated copper wire, and frequently some thin-sheet stainless steel and wrought aluminum. Maximum metal recovery in the operating program was achieved using a water velocity of 52 fpm (650 gpm). Maximum purity was obtained with a velocity of 88 fpm (1,100 gpm). .Water was recycled through a 12,000-gal baffled clarifying tank. Entrainment water losses with the float and middling rejects averaged 50 gpt of reject feed. Records maintained by the shredder operator show a 34-pct increase in nonmagnetic metals recovery during a 1-yr operation of the water elutriator as compared to recoveries from a previously used air classification system.

The Pennsylvania anthracite region is composed of four fields, namely, the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. It is in the eastern part of Pennsylvania and is shown on figure 1. The anthracite industry is confronted with a crucial problem of inundation by water impounded in underground pools in many mines and by infiltration of water from streams and pools on the surface (3). The deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, and the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered as a State problem rather than a national one (1, 4, 6, 7). Anthracite was discovered in Pennsylvania in 1762, and the first mining company was formed in 1793. It was not until 1812 that anthracite began to receive recognition in the Philadelphia market as a domestic fuel, and by 1838 the annual production was nearly 1 million net tons. Since anthracite mining began, mine water has become progressively more difficult and costly to handle because of the extraction of anthracite both underground and along the outcrops of the beds, until at the present time mine drainage is a major anthracite-mining problem. Mine water is handled at the anthracite mines as follows: (a) by pumping, (b) by drainage tunnels, (c) by combination of pumping and drainage tunnels, and (d) by water hoists (hoisting water by means of large buckets) (4, 5,6, 7). This paper covers removal of the water from mines by means of pumping plants. Pumping is indispensable in the production of anthracite (5). The cost of pumping mine water has increased progressively since anthracite mining began. Some collieries have been forced to discontinue mining because of the high cost of pumping.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. Successful longwall mining requires a good roof control. A good roof control implies that: (1) no excessive pressure is build up in the face powered supports, and (2) chain pillars are designed in such a way that panel entries are well protected and interactions between adjacent panels are minimized. A clear understanding of strata behavior around longwall panels due to face movement is, therefore, the foremost requirement for achieving better roof control. This dissertation is designed to analyze the effects of strata behavior on longwall panels due to the mining activities. The following topics are studied: (1) the weighting, phenomena and their effects on front abutments, and (2) the chain pillar stability and pillar design under various roof conditions. Three dimensional finite element analysis was employed. The effect of parameters such as overburden depth, mechanical properties of the immediate roof and main roof, panel width, and size of chain pillar on (t) and (2) were analyzed. Four typical models were utilized to simulate various phases of panel extraction under various combinations of the above parameters; model one is to simulate the beginning of panel mining; model two is to simulate the situation that longwall face has passed more than half of panel length; model three is to simulate the completion of panel production; and model four is to simulate the second panel mining. The following formulae have been developed by applying multiple regression model to analyze the finite clement results: (1) a formula that classifies the type of root strata at the face area. (2) formulae that predict the first weighting and periodic weighting lengths. (3) a formula for design of the chain pillar size. Case studies were performed to check the validity of the formulae proposed. Comparison of the formulae proposed for the chain pillar design with other formulae were also performed.

The first survey 3/ covering sales of liquefied petroleum gases was made in 1930 by the Bureau of Mines, which at the time was under the United States Department of Commerce. This original canvass covered national totals for 1922 through 1929, and most of the supply came from natural gasoline plants. The 1930 report showed approximate totals for butane and propane and for butane-propane mixtures and pentane grouped together. No attempt was made to breakdown the national sales by various uses until 1931, when the quantities for domestic or household consumption, gas manufacturing, and industrial requirements, including miscellaneous uses were indicated. As the market for these liquid petroleum gases expanded and as new uses came into importance, their respective quantities were shown separately in the annual survey. Sales for internal-combustion engine fuel and for raw material for chemical plants were first taken out of the industrial total in 1936. During World War II liquefied petroleum gases became important as feed stock diverted to synthetic rubber plants, and consequently the survey was broadened to cover this particular demand, beginning in 1944. Pentane was dropped from the survey after 1943, as, being liquid at atmospheric pressure, it is not considered as one of the liquefied petroleum gases and furthermore, the quantity reported made up less than 1 percent of the total sales. Thirteen producing companies reported to the Bureau in the first survey made in 1930, and in the 1952 canvass about 130 producers--petroleum refiners and natural gasoline companies--and about 1,300 dealers cooperated by filing schedules showing a breakdown of their sales. Their 1952 deliveries of approximately 4.5 billion gallons of liquefied petroleum gases were equivalent to about 3.4 billion gallons of gasoline or 3.1 billion gallons of distillate fuel oil.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January I, 1965, to December 31, 1969. It supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;' the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;3 the 5-year list of Bureau publications and articles from January I, 1960, to December 31, 1964.' "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands.
