The paper traces the pattern of spontaneous combustion in the workings of what was originally Hemsworth Colliery, but since July 1967 is now part of South Kirby Colliery. Examination is made of the Barnsley Seam sections and the part played by the top section of the seam as it comes in close proximity to the main seam. In this area of the colliery nine mechanised faces were set away between the years 1953 and 1968, every one "fired" at the pillar edge and six "fired" at the face line when production had ceased. The paper deals with the different preventative measures used, from sandbag walls, cement injections, spraying with polyurethane, until finally using Mandoseal as a sealant. Since the latter method was first used, the last three faces worked in this particular area were all salvaged completely, without any sign of a heating developing.

Thermodynamical data of importance in connection with copper smelting have been reviewed and a collection of the most reliable information is presented in Tables XXV-XXVIII and Figs. 67 and 6 8 (folding plate). The data given in these figures and tables consists of (i) graphs and equations showing the variations in the temperature range 0-2000°C. of the standard free energies of formation of most of the oxides and sulphides met with in copper smelting (Table XXV and Fig. 67); (ii) equations showing the temperature variation of the free energy of formation of iron silicates (Table XXVI); (iii) graphs showing the variation with temperature in the range 1000°-1600°C. of the standard free energies of the principal reactions occurring in the smelter (Fig. 6 8 ); (iv) the standard heats of formation at 1200°C. of the main iron and copper compounds and gases reacting in the smelter (Table XXVII); (v) the standard heats of reaction at 1200°C. of a few of the reactions for which the free energy relationships were given in Fig. 6 8 (Table XXVIII). The data presented are discussed in more detail.

Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. Mines are facing fresh challenges over how they deal with the huge quantities of water consumed. industry analyst Frost and Sullivan, demand for treatment equipment and services alone is expected to be worth US$3.6bn by 2016, while a report by consultancy Bluefield Research estimates that the total mine water market - which includes water infrastructure such as reservoirs, pipelines and dewatering systems as well as the equipment and services - will be worth US$17bn by the end of 2019. Methods of water decontamination are described.
