There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

The main, though rarely mentioned advantage, is likely to be the standardisation of best practice and product. In a batch process conditions vary cyclically, but with a continuous process they would, at least ideally, remain the same for long periods of time. The other main advantages of continuous over batch processes are likely to be reduced operating and capital costs, the improved possibilities for automatic control, and more consistent product quality. Recent developments are surveyed for ironmaking and steelmaking with reference to blast furnaces; solid-product and molten-product direct reduction; the trough-type processes of Thring, Worner, the Japanese National Research Institute for Metals and Glinkov; basic-oxygen furnace (LD) variants; spray steelmaking; continuous casting and vacuum degassing; rolling; and coating. Encouragement in the devleopment of continuous processes may be drawn from the way unexpected difficulties, such as trouble with sulphur and refractories, were tackled and overcome to achieve the float glass process

The mineralisation is associated with a composite diorite to quartz monzonite stock of Permian to Triassic age that intrudes Devonian carbonate strata. In the intrusive rocks it is associated with potassic alteration and in the carbonate wall rocks it is hosted by prograde garnet-rich and retrograde epidote-rich skarn. Both porphyry and skarn mineralisation include disseminated and fracture-controlled mineralisation, the latter probably accounting for the major part of the contained minerals. Copper, gold, silver and zinc are strongly positively correlated within the mineralised zones, although there are small differences in metal ratios between the different ore types; molybdenum appears to be negatively correlated with copper and gold. Ore minerals include chalcopyrite, magnetite and pyrite in porphyry-type mineralisation and bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite and lesser haematite in skarn.

Selective flocculation was investigated as a possible method of recovering values from mineral slimes which are too finely divided to be treated by conventional mineral processing methods. It has proved possible to flocculate selectively either haematite or a silicate from a stably dispersed mixture by varying the anionic character of the high-molecular-weight, partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide employed. Different separation methods have been developed for hard and soft water media. Electrokinetic and infrared techniques have been employed to elucidate the mechanism whereby selectivity has been attained in the different cases. The following influences on the various selective flocculation parameters have been investigated: (a) the level of the different reagent additions and (b) the shear conditions during and after flocculant addition. A feature of the particular system studied was the high solids content at which it was possible to achieve good selectivity. Probable reasons for this are advanced, and the possibilities and potentialities of the process are discussed.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Among the various theories proposed to account for the spontaneous ignjtion of coal, one which has at times been very strongly held is that the initial heating is due to the oxidation of iron pyrites. From the results described in this paper, it is possible to calculate roughly the rate of spontaneous heating of a specimen of finely-divided pyrites, on the assumption that all the heat developed is used in raising the temperature of the pyrites, and that none is lost. It is clear that where finely-divided pyrites occurs in considerable proportion among coal, it may be the chief factor in originating combustion, but that pyrites can only be the cause of a heating when it is present in considerable proportion, and in a very finely-divided state

1994 estimates for Porgera are probable and proven reserves of 58 200 000 t of ore grading 5 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is related to an intrusive complex emplaced at shallow levels in poorly consolidated sedimentary rocks. The complex is located in a zone of fold-and-thrust deformation, whose formation may have been initiated shortly before emplacement and continues locally today. Abundant primary magnetite in the complex gives an intense, 5 km wide aeromagnetic anomaly. The deposit formed during two main stages of mineralisation, the first related to early magmatic-hydrothermal activity and the second representing later epithermal overprinting centred on the Roamane fault. Hydrothermal alteration followed closely on emplacement indicating a close genetic relationship between magmatism and mineralisation. Both stages of hydrothermal activity post-date and overprint early propylitic alteration. Several factors have acted in unison or sequentially to concentrate metals at the deposit, including an extensional or trans-tensional tectonic setting within an arc or collisional environment, the exsolution of a magmatic hydrothermal fluid prior to sulphur saturation in the melt, the development of the hydrothermal system into one favourable for transporting gold, the action of late-stage faulting in focusing epithermal fluid flow, and the role of dissolved gases in promoting fluid phase separation and high-grade ore deposition

Deposition velocities play an important role in many fields of engineering and an impressive range of measured data has accumulated in the literature. Numerous workers have addressed the problems that are associated with the prediction of deposition velocity because of its particular relevance to the design of pipelines and pumping stations. However, despite this extensive effort, the calculation of friction heads still requires reference to experimentally based graphs to determine Durand factors and there is still scope for improvement in the prediction of the deposition velocity at different solids concentrations. Equations to characterise the relationship between the Durand factor and the volume concentrations of solids in the slurry are presented. A correlation for the prediction of the deposition velocity is also developed and tested against some of the classical experimental data. The application of predicted values of deposition velocity in assessing the potential for the sanding-up of spiral separators is then described and a case study is presented.

The central domain of the Spanish Central System contains a series of Ba-(F)-(base metal sulphide) hydrothermal vein deposits that are hosted by adamellitic granitoids. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data suggest that the mineralisation was formed by low-salinity hydrothermal solutions that incorporated fluids, metals and sulphur from a magmatic source. Mineralisation occurred in two main stages; a first stage of open-space filling with quartz-Ba-(F)-(base metals) ; and a second stage of brecciation and deposition of quartz-barite. The two mineralising events can be clearly related to two tectonic episodes of late Variscan age that involved extension along east-west trends followed by ductile transcurrent movements along northeast-southwest trends.

The paper, presented at the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 8th April 1916, presents experimental work undertaken to observe the quenching effect of different substances, to find the most efficient of these substances, and to arrive at a possible explanation of their preventive action. The coal-dusts experimented with were such as passed through a 100-mesh sieve (10,000 holes to the square inch), and were obtained by grinding the coals. The quenching substances, used in as fine a state of division as possible, included gypsum, dried Chance mud, quicklime, magnesia, magnesia alba (levis), anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, soda-crystals, Glauber salts, ground shale and boiler-ashes

The Lick Fork prospect shows appreciable nickel sulphide mineralization in a narrow, steeply dipping, layered sequence of metamorphosed hornblende peridotite, gahhro and hornblende gahhro, intrusive into the Pedlar Formation (charnockitic pyroxene granulite) of the Virginia Blue Ridge Complex (Precambrian). Rocks of the intrusion have equilibrated to granulite- facies metamorphism, as indicated by pervasive polygonal texture of silicate aggregates, development of biotite- and hornblende-preferred orientation, compositional equilibration of the silicate minerals, the Mg-Fe2+ (orthopyroxene-dino- pvroxene) distribution coefficients (average 0.57), (MgO + FeO + Fe20 3)/Al20 3ratios in orthopyroxenes, and Ti contents and AI(i\)/A I(\i) ratios of hornblendes. The sulphides, consisting of pyrrhotite-pentlandite (with up to 4 wt% Co)-chalcopyrite-pyrite-marcasite-violarite- bornite—mackinawite, are virtually restricted to the ultramafic unit of the intrusion and constitute 20-30% of the samples of hornblende peridotite studied. Although the basal accumulation of the sulphides may suggest magmatic segregation, sulphide- silicate textures typical of sulphide liquid immiscibilitv are not present, even in the sparsely mineralized gahbro units. On the other hand, the transgressive and relict textures are strongly suggestive of replacement of the silicate minerals by sulphides. These include chaleopyrite ± pyrrhotite ± pentlandite (violarite) ± pyrite ±magnetite veins crosscutting silicates, sulphide penetration into silicates at silicate-sulphide contact zones, rounding of silicate grains against sulphide matrix, and islands of silicate minerals (olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, biotite) in sulphide masses. Metamorphic mobilization of pre-existing sul­ phides is a possibility, but involvement of post-metamorphic, hydrothermal fluids is suggested by the following features: paucity of annealing and deformation textures in the sulphides, replacement of metamorphic and deformed silicates, lack of differential sulphide mobilization and the common occurrence of sulphides along grain boundaries and triple junctions of poly gonal silicate aggregates. The consistent association between sulphides and hydrothermal alteration products of silicates suggests that they are cogenetic. The hydrothermal fluids may have merely mobilized and concentrated the pre-existing, disseminated, magmatic sulphides, or there may have been significant addition of sulphides during this process. This question cannot be resolved unequivocally with the existing data.

The surface tensions of lead and lead alloys with very low concentrations of silver, tin and copper were measured by the sessile-drop method. The enrichment of silver and tin in the surface of liquid lead alloys at temperatures close to the freezing-point of lead was confirmed, which may explain the unusual behaviour of small amounts of silver and tin in lead bulllion during the sulphur-drossing step of the refining process. From the limited data available copper also appears to concentrate at the surface of the liquid alloy

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. The comminution circuit at the plant has experienced severe problems arising from a feed containing much larger amounts of clay and having a higher moisture content than expected. Three solutions were proposed: replacement of the crushing circuit by tooth roll-type crushers; using washing drums; and introducing primary autogenous/semi-autogenous millling instead of crushing. Computer simulations studied the effects of the first two solutions on the circuit capacity. Laboratory and industrial scale ball mill batch grinding tests were carried out. The parameters of a kinetic model were determined. The ball mill circuit was sampled and operating model parameters were calculated. The ability of batch grinding parameters to represent the operating conditions was studied. Tests failed to find acceptable model parameters, but parameters from an industrial size batch mill were found to be suitable for simulation studies. The simulations indicated that a continuous feed of -12 mm provided by tooth roll crushers would maintain the desired capacity. Increasing the feed size to -25 mm would reduce the capacity by 8-15%. The use of washing drums could also solve the capacity problem, but small fluctuations in water flow rates might result in problems of excess water in the grinding circuit.

The fixed-time locked-cycle grinding test is employed to simulate the industrial closed grinding circuit on the laboratory scale. A mathematical algorithm for 'cyclewise' computer simulation of the locked-cycle test has been derived and used to study an idealised laboratory-scale model of a closed ball-mill circuit. When heated in the absence of oxygen, pyrite from refractory gold concentrates decomposes endothermically to pyrrhotite, releasing sulphur. The decomposition starts at the particle surface and progresses inwards, leaving an adhering layer of porous pyrrhotite. Use of the conventional shrinking-core model implicitly assumes a negligible partial pressure of sulphur in the bed, but this pressure is in fact at least equal to the equilibrium vapour pressure of sulphur over pyrite, constituting the principal control of the rate of decomposition. Further experiments showed a decrease in reaction rate as the conversion increased. Both phenomena are attributed to the persistence of non-isothermal conditions in the fluidised bed during pyrolysis, caused by the endothermic nature of the reaction and the relatively slow rates of heat transfer to particles and vapour removal from the bed. The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades
