The studies carried out by the Russian researchers and those carried out jointly within some contracts with scientific organizations and companies of other countries, show that the electric pulse disintegration of materials (ED), proposed and investigated in detail in Russia (Kalyatsky, et al, 1980; Usov et al, 1987; Semkin et al, 1995; Usov and Tsukerman, 2000; Kurets et al, 2002) has been widely recognized and developed abroad (Andres, 1995; Inoue et al, 2000; Biela et al, 2008). The Russian and international journals and the proceedings of the conferences dealing with the electric pulse disintegration pay great attention to the principal principals of selective disintegration of materials. There is no, however, any information concerning both the technical means developed to implement the technique and the assessment of their performance, which would be necessary in objective assessment of the industrial use of the technology. The results of long-term studies of the technique and technologies of electric pulse disaggregation by research institutes such as Research Institute of High Voltages (Tomsk), Kola Science Centre of RAS (Apatity), Institute "Mekhanobr"(S.Pertersburg) described. Exploratory stands and technological installations are developed to carry out pilot tests and operations under production conditions. Basic circuits and classification of technical means electric pulse disintegration of the materials are proposed, the analysis of transportation schemes and classification of the material in the disintegration apparatus are given, construction of chambers for continuous stadial disintegration of ores and materials are presented. The features and technological efficiency of electric pulse disintegration of various types of ores, and the spheres of effective use of the method have been determined. "In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.Bubble column performances were significantly affected by unpredictable technical difficulties met to maintain continuous feeding in the bubble column and by a significant settling of the heavy solid particles. Nonetheless, theoretical kinetic data, extrapolated from results in batch conditions, could be compared to those obtained in continuous tests, in bubble column and in mechanically agitated reactors. These kinetic data were used to evaluate the influence of reactor design and configuration choice on bioleaching performances."

The recovery of water for re-use in minerals processing is an important issue in the reduction of water use in mining, as is the dewatering of tailings to reduce the propensity of ?wet? tailings dams. It is common in these dewatering operations to use thickeners whereby polymeric flocculants are combined with the dilute feed to the thickener to aid sedimentation and the subsequent consolidation of particulate materials. Thickeners are the workhorses of water recovery and tailings dewatering and although the basics are well understood, there is still no ability to reliably predict the throughput and underflow density from a thickener based on traditional sedimentation tests and flux analysis. The reasons for the discrepancy between full-scale operations and predictions based on laboratory tests are numerous, including difficulties in mimicking the flocculation conditions experienced in the field and the shear conditions in the thickener. The latter effects are little understood and hard to quantify and include effects due to flocculated aggregate densification, complimentary shear and compressional effects and aggregate break-up. Developing a set of test protocols to quantify the effects of densification, shear in compression effects and aggregate breakup and the subsequent contributions of each to compressional dewatering in a thickening environment has been completed for a simple model polymer flocculated particulate suspension. The data and analysis shows that aggregate densification is a dominant contributor to the difference between observed and predicted behavior based on laboratory tests. A major consideration in the analysis is the fact that common thickener operations are permeability limited and although the various effects are all important, the one that results in the fastest water release is dominant. Of interest also are the shear rate, concentration, and time dependence of the aggregate densification process. A basic model of the process has been developed along with network yielding tests conducted using rheometry. Reverse-flotation technology is often applied in iron ore dressing plant, in order to enhance the quality of iron concentrate from magnetic separation. However, this technology has disadvantages in operating cost, energy consumption, and environmental protection. Developing innovative equipment to process magnetite ore more-effectively is a way to get rid of these disadvantages of reverse flotation and improve the quality of iron concentrate. This paper describes the development of Complex Flashing-Field Magnetic Cleaner, a new kind of equipment based on the principle of combination of separation in magnetic field and separation in gravity field. This innovative equipment possesses a tailor-made magnetic system and has the characteristics of a magnetic field, which can strengthen the formation of magnetic agglomerations and the dispersion of gangue minerals, improving the quality of separation. The automatic control system developed specifically for this equipment can further increase the accuracy of separation and stabilize the process. Test results showed that this equipment is reliable in operation, economically beneficial, and has large potential of application.

Mica plate is broadly used in electric industry, production of man-made mica paper plate is in-creasing. The problem coming with is that large quantities of leftover materials unable to be re-cycled are produced during cutting and molding of mica plate productions. The leftover materials are always abandoned as crabs, which not only pollute the environment but also waste our resources. The study intends to find a new measure to decompose and to reuse the mica plate leftover materials so as to create a new production process of mica plate, which is clean and does not produce crabs.

"Expert Online is a software system that makes use of novel artificial intelligence technology, known as the Interpreting Expert System (IES), to mimic an informed expert on a minerals processing plant. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining the controller actions. Expert Online will also take on the more difficult task of explaining the complex process behaviour to the operator in simple language.The primary functions of Expert Online are to serve as a training tool and an online assistant to operators. However, it is also expected to be of value to supervisors and plant managers.A number of additional features are envisaged, including different operating modes, fault detection, speech synthesis and advanced message filtering. Expert Online will increase the operator’s knowledge of the process and his/her understanding and acceptance of the complex control systems. Users would be supplied with relevant and timeous information required to make informed decisions to ensure smooth plant operation.This paper discusses the structural design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of MINTEK’s open control platform, PlantStar, as well as several advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System."

Goethite ore are the third most abundant source of iron. The overwhelming part of these ore is represented by low-grade varieties which cannot be used in iron and steel industry without preliminary beneficiation. Biomass is a renewable solid fuel, which is feasible for the substitution of coke and coal in the manufacturing due to its lower contents of harmful elements and abundant raw material sources. Utilization of biomass in iron ore sintering process as heating agent and reducing agent contributes to energy conservation and emission reduction. The biomass was mixed together with goethite ore for roasting process to investigate the effects of reduction roasting. The results show that the goethite ore is dramatically reduced and magnetized into maghemite by biomass with the biomass dosage less than 20% and the roasting temperature below 650 oC. When the goethite ore roasted with biomass, the magnetization values could be enhanced more than two orders of magnitude, meets the standard of magnetic separation, which could significantly reduce the iron beneficiation cost. "The aim of the research is to develop a holistic process flow for the recycling of glass fibres from glass reinforced plastics (GRP) and carbon fibres from carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), wherein the dissolution of the fibre epoxy resin matrix, separation of fibre fractions and their renewed material use is intended. In clear distinction to the previous research and development projects, the aim here is to recycle complex composite structures such as dismantled/disused wind turbine rotor blades and end-of-life composite wastes. In the course of the study, mechanical, hydrothermal and thermal processes and their combined procedures will be developed. As the fibre length is a decisive quality criterion in the recycling of composite materials, the further focus of the study will be the development of upstream and downstream material processing, in which the fibres are retained in their original form. The evaluation of the recycled fibres obtained is based on the elemental composition, measurement and morphological evaluation of individual filaments by scanning electron microscope (SEM), micro tensile tests on single fibres and their comparison to virgin fibres. The resulting process water is analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and a potential recirculation is determined. In cooperation with companies from the composite processing industry as well as recycling companies, a return of the recycled fibres to the known manufacturing process will be examined and an energetic and economic evaluation of the overall process will be carried out. Ambitious aim of the study is to achieve an actual recycling instead of the present downcycling or the energetic utilization. INTRODUCTION As global warming increases, so does the awareness of consumption and production of energy. To counteract the effects of global warming, renewable energy has been increasingly used during the last two decades, not only in Germany, but worldwide. Both, hydropower and wind energy, hereby play a fundamental role. After the end of their useful life of 20 to 30 years, the wind turbines (WTs) are being dismantled. Due to their foundations and tower segments, their recycling rate hereby exceeds 90% by mass. So far, the resulting rotor blade waste played a minor role accounting for only 2 - 3 weight-% of the total plant. Rotor blades of modern wind turbines are made of glass and carbon fibers, which are embedded in an epoxy or polyester resin matrix, balsa wood, PU or PET foams as fillers as well as various paints and coatings. These wastes currently end up in waste incineration or are sold to non-European countries."

The ore, dealt with in this paper, is a certain rutile in Shanxi province, China. A trunk flowsheet with gravity concentration is used, and the TiO2 grade of rutile concentrate is about 90%, but the TiO2 recovery is less than 50%. In order to increase the rutile recovery, the laboratory test, using the truck flowsheet with flotation, is carried out. The flowsheet is that firstly floatable gangue is re-moved by flotation; secondly rutile is recovered by flotation; and thirdly impurity is separated by LIMS, HIMS, gravity concentration and flotation from the rutile concentrate. In rutile flotation, BK423, a phosphonic acid, is used as rutile collector, and Na2SiF6 is used as silicates depressant. The experimental result shows that the recovery of rutile concentrate is improved obviously, and the recovery of ultimate rutile concentrate is 68.01% TiO2 and 84.88% rutile. The TiO2 grade of first concentrate is 95.98%, and the TiO2 recovery is 45.60%. The TiO2 grade of second concentrate is 80.53%, and the recovery is 22.41%. Furthermore, magnetite and ilmenite are recovered in the flowsheet.

Cyanide is widely used gold lixiviant for hydrometallurgical processes. The resulting tails contain complex toxic compounds. With reference to this, the protection of the environment should be the major issue. A complete detoxification of cyanides before disposal, a partial detoxification to the allowable concentrations and a disposal of tails at a polygon followed by the detoxification of excess water into the environment are offered as an environmentally friendly way of disposal. However, a complete detoxification of the cyanidation tails does not give the required results due to the presence of toxic compounds, cyanides and thiocyanates in tailings ponds. This is due to adsorption-desorption process occurring between solid and liquid phases. A partial detoxification is used to down cyanide to the allowable concentrations, which are safe to the environment. The storage of tails without detoxification is mainly used at low concentrations of toxic compounds in the disposed tails. With reference to this, water recycling is practiced by Russian plants in order to reduce as much as possible or almost eliminate toxic effluents into the environment. Fresh water is applied if necessary and to make up for water losses, with 8-12% of total water supply. This allows for the stability of water balance and the decrease of consumption of the reagents applied. The conditioning technologies of water recycling followed by regeneration of free cyanide and metals recovery as saleable concentrates are specially developed due to adverse impact of water recycling on gold recovery processes due to high concentration of base metals (copper). These technologies are also profitable. In order to detoxify cyanide in the tails for tailings dam, effective and inexpensive technologies involving a seasonal use of detoxified reagents were developed. For example, a technology with aldehydes use which is applied by a series of operations. Effluents disposed to the environment are detoxified using chlorination followed by almost a complete destruction of toxic cyanides and thiocyanates. Before disposal, chlorinated water is settled to precipitate the resulting hydroxides of metals and complete chemical reactions such as a full decomposition of hypochlorite ions. In order to protect ground water, watertight screens from local water-resistant materials are used. The samples of these materials were previously tested and chosen according to their maximum ability to adsorb toxic compounds in the tailings pond. If local water-resistant materials are not available, whole welded impermeable polymer screens are used. The options mentioned allow the storage of cyanidation tails in accordance with national ecological standards. "The aim of NPO RIVS research and practice activities is to minimize impact of the mineral processing plants (MPP) on environment by using new concentration methods, high-technology equipment, implementation of engineering solutions directed to reduce emission of polluting substances (PS) into atmosphere, application of low-waste technologies, decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater source for process needs. In our studies environmental safety of mineral flotation is provided through technologies using highly selective chemicals, that leads not only to reducing reagent consumption, and production of saleable products of high content of extracted minerals, but also to reducing pollutant emissions, decreasing supply of surfactants (SAA) in natural geosystems, primarily, in ground and surface waters. Decrease of water withdrawal from a surface water or groundwater sources for process needs can be achieved by using closed circuits and waste water treatment for further use in process operations, recycled water conditioning to obtain optimum quality parameters for process operations of concentration. Concentration in water (wet processing), tailings dewatering and semidry and dry (filtration cake) stockpiling in tailing ponds, efficient dust-collecting systems contribute to pollutant emission reduction. Use of mineral wastes – concentration tailings as a source of valued components, facilitates efficient use of natural resources and reduces wastes and its impact on natural ecosystems due to smaller areas of damaged lands during waste products disposal. Process and engineering solutions of NPO RIVS that allow diminishing impact of MPP on natural environment (NE) have been implemented in mining and processing complexes of Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Kirghizia and Mongolia. Compliance with environmental safety requirements contributes to enhancement of mineral processing and sustainable mineral development.INTRODUCTION Mining and processing complexes have a significant impact on environment as a result of extraction and recovery of mineral resources, landscape changes, waste disposal and, as a consequence, pollution of soils, surface and underground water sources. "South Africa is the world?s second largest producer of titanium bearing minerals, but apart from producing titanium mineral concentrate to form TiO2 slag, little further value is added in South Africa to mined minerals. Various studies were undertaken by both government and the private sector in an un-coordinated manner until 2007 when the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) planned and adopted a national strategy to establish a local titanium metal industry through the research and development of key technologies that would provide a competitive advantage to such a local industry. The strategy entailed a two-pronged approach in the development of this capability, viz. simultaneous investments in the development of high-level human capital and technology in the fields of titanium metal powder production and downstream titanium metal powder processing technologies. To date significant progress has been made to establish research and/or pilot scale facilities in the following technical areas: TiCl4 production technology, titanium powder production technology, high energy milling of titanium powder, metal injection moulding facilities, rapid production of large components using laser additive manufacturing technology, investment casting of titanium, resource efficient machining of titanium and friction stir welding of titanium. Supporting technologies are also at an advanced stage through investments in titanium powder spheroidization and direct rolling of titanium powder. The intent with investment in some of these areas is not to develop new technology per se, but rather to establish local capability that will position South Africa to collaborate with other organisations in the world so that technologies can be acquired and transferred when needed in the future."

Froth stability is widely recognized as a key driver of flotation selectivity. It is well known that froth stability is affected by the type and quantity of surface active reagents present (frothers), and the concentration and hydrophobicity of solid particles present. While some studies have been performed on the effect of frothers on froth stability in three-phase systems and the hydrophobicity of particles present, very little work has been performed on the effect of solids loading on froth stability. This may be due to insufficiently robust measurement techniques. This paper investigates the use of a new machine vision measurement to measure solids loading, and the relationship between this measurement, bubble size, and bubble burst rate on the froth surface. "In recent years, metal producing companies have increased their investment in automation and technological innovation, embracing new opportunities to enable transformational change. Internet of Things (IoT) is one of many transformational initiatives, which can fundamentally revolutionize how industrial complexes operate. Whatever the issue, the answer is in the abundant and growing quantity of real time data and events collected in the grinding and flotation circuits in a mineral processing plant. Based on earlier work, today a grade recovery model permits identifying the best operating conditions in real time. We will review the strategy for increasing the value of the abundance instrumentation in current plants. An optimal Gaudin size distribution model provides augmented information from traditional sensors to find the optimal grind cut to reduce metal losses in the flotation circuits. The large amount of sensors in a flotation circuits permits to estimate the recovery and to find the optimal froth depth and aeration using an air holdup flotation model. The paper will describe the strategy of classifying data for on line generation of insights to using operational intelligence tools. We will discuss the implementation Recovery/Grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous mineral processing and iron beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe declining supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded higher operational efficiencies with minimum capital investments. The objective of copper flotation objectives are based on maximizing the dollars return on the concentrate produced. The economic efficiency is maximized by manipulating the circuit along the grade/recovery curve relationship. To achieve such objective improved stabilization of the grinding and flotation circuits are required (Oosthuizen, Craig, and Jamsa-Jounela, 2017)."

A selected flotation system of beneficiation of the copper ore at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. has been analyzed in the article. It was found that a proper assessment of upgrading must be based on two elements, that is the upgrading process selectivity and working point of the considered flotation unit, both determined, preferentially by means of the Fuerstenau recovery-recovery upgrading curve. The Cu recovery - non-Cu components recovery upgrading curve was selected for calculations because its background lines (no separation and ideal separation) are insensitive to changes in the grade of feed of the processed material. This approach allows a comparison of upgrading results for feeds having different grade, being upgraded in various flotation machines and under different physicochemical conditions. It was shown in the paper that the main criterion for comparison of two working in parallel systems is selectivity of upgrading. However, when two flotation machines, despite of the same selectivity, produce concentrate and tailing of different grades, it is necessary to analyze their working points using upgrading curves. The proper position of the working point depends on the criterion imposed on the process and is a result of not only basic parameters of the upgrading process such as feed, concentrate and tailing grades but also on economic parameters such as costs associated with the production of concentrates and the time needed for their production.

A potential of electric pulse disintegration in benification used for primary deposits ores containing precious metals is shown. Of special significance is that PGM and gold grains, being highly plastic, are easily liberated and are not smeared on the disintegrated rock fragments surface. It al-lows gravity separation, which is less expensive and more efficient, to be used instead of chemical processing, which is expensive and environmentally faulty.

Metso Mining and Construction Technology is one of the world leading suppliers of equipment and knowhow for aggregate and mining industry. The processing capacity, ease of use, and reliability are featuring Metso?s state-of-the-art cone crushers. Crushing is a complicated process affected by numerous parameters. The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Metso has launched a new series of cone crushers HP3, HP4 and HP5 that are all able to work in high density crushing applications The test results and evidence from over 300 installations clearly prove the effectiveness and importance of high density crushing. "This paper addresses the need for advanced control technologies and strategies in the mining industry, its potential and actual impact on mining processes and the best practices for their implementation, operation, and long term sustainability. It is well known that advanced process control (APC) can be a very good source for incremental process improvement for the mining industry, yielding to higher production rates or helping maintain consistent production rates despite ore changes. The application and integration of new technology, process knowledge and innovation are key elements in building such a supporting structure. More specifically, and this cannot be emphasized enough, the correct application and assembly of control tools, the in-time presentation of key data to decision makers and the development of relevant statistics and KPI’s (key performance indicators) can and will make a difference not only in terms of production, but also in plant stability, availability and production costs. In deploying such ideas and aiming at the long-term goal of "Operational Excellence", Minera Los Pelambres (MLP) has developed a number of successful control strategies, best practices and technologies, which are not only the application of state-of-the-art automation and computing tools, but rather the assembly of the above presented structuring factors. This work discusses some of the key tools and ideas implemented for SAG & Ball milling and Flotation areas, their performance results and the roadmap taken for the integration of process knowledge and control tools. Also, cases studies are presented and discussed further to not only show the main areas of improvement, but also to highlight the benefits of such strategy that for the most part, deviate from the traditional mining industry control approach. Also, a word is given on the need for innovating in the design of control strategies and leveraging best practices and process knowledge that ultimately, will contribute to long-term reliable operations, improved mineral processing and, although unmeasured, lead to a superior overall performance and productivity of all mining personnel involved."

"The deleterious effect of carbonaceous matter during cyanidation of gold ores (so called preg-robbing) has been recognized for many years. Based on this, a new method using flotation to reduce the content of carbonaceous matter was developed. Low-sulfide gold-bearing ore with carbonaceous matter of 0.14% from a Russian deposit was processed. The purpose of these tests was to compare two flow sheet options. Option I comprised removal of carbonaceous product prior to sulfide flotation. Option II comprised removal of carbonaceous matter from flotation concentrate. It was found that the content of carbonaceous material can be reduced in sulfide gold-bearing concentrate prior to leaching. High gold recovery was observed during the separation of carbonaceous material prior to sulfide flotation using Option I. Due to lower reagent consumption the costs for reagents were decreased using Option II. The results have shown the effectiveness of a new method. Patent No. 2783808 was obtained for removal of carbonaceous material prior to sulfide flotation. This information will be used to design a large processing plant flow sheet in Russia."

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.
