"PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. "The early history of the Geological Survey of Canada is closely connected with coal geology investigations in the Atlantic Provinces. In 1843, Sir William Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey, measured the 4441m thick shore section at Joggins in Nova Scotia. Detailed mapping of the coalfields were subsequently carried out by H. Fletcher during the latter part of the nineteenth and first part of the present century. During the 1920-1940 period, the stratigraphy of the carboniferous WIZS' established by WA. Bell, who later also became a diretor of the Survey. Bell's work WIZS' followed by coal geology investigations of A.A. Hayes, W.S. Dyer, EA. Goranson, G. W.H. Norman, J.E. Muller, T.B. Haites and P.A. Hacquebord.The activities and accomplishments of the Survey geologists during the past 150 years are presented in this paper.General Outline of Survey Activities in Coal Geology During the Past 150 YearsIn 1842, when the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established, the industrialization of the major countries of Western Europe and North America was actively persued. The energy required for this industrialization was obtained from the only fossil fuel then available, namely coal. The measure of a country's major mineral wealth at that time was the availability of mineable resources of coal. Eastern Canada, where mining had been carried out since 1720, was known to be well endowed with valuable coal deposits. In the major fields of Nova Scotia (Fig. I) several large-scale operations had been started during the middle and latter part of the nineteenth century.The significance of coal, therefore, was well understood, and exploration surveys specifically oriented toward coal were carried out by the Geological Survey from its earliest beginning. The first report of a detailed geological description of the coal measures of eastern Canada was prepared in 1843 by Sir William Logan (1845), the founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. This early work was continued and complemented in 1896 by H. fletcher (1906), who during the latter part of the nineteenth century and first part of the present century systematically mapped the coal-bearing regions of Nova Scotia, which he considered all to be of approximately the same age."

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Les fines peu¬vent être utilisées pour la fabrication du verre et comme matière de charge.

DIAMOND drills have played an important part in the development of mines for many years. Recently. they have also entered the production field arid the use of diamond drills m the primary breaking of ores has become a big branch of the industry. The writer has estimated roughly that the total diamond drilling in Canada during 1942 was 5,625,000 feet, of which 2,250,000 feet, or 40 per cent, was for blast-holes. This accounts for 6,750,000 tons of ore broken, using the conservative factor of 3 tons per foot of hole. Many consider that the use of diamond drills for blast-holes is the most important advance in mine practice of the past decade, and the industry owes a great deal to the staff of Noranda Mines, Limited, for the pioneering they have done in the development of long-hole mining methods and for publishing their results. A great many mines have followed Noranda's lead. At the Waite-Amulet, Aldermac, Flin Flon, Canadian Malartic, Hoyle, and Matachewan Consolidated mines, most of the ore is broken by long-hole blasting. While the mines were developing new methods, the diamond-drill industry was developing mechanically-set bits and better machines. Through the effective use o smaller, cheaper diamonds, as well as more efficient setting, bit costs per foot are only one-half what they were ten years ago. Few people realize that a diamond bit is relatively inexpensive. The common EXT coring bit, for example, contains some 200 small diamonds, weighing altogether about 2.70 carats which, at $3.40 per carat, cost $9.20. After use, the equivalent of about 100 of these diamonds may be recovered. Therefore the true cost of the bit is only $7.00, made up of $4.60, the cost of the diamonds lost, $2.00 for setting, and $0.40 tax. The trend in machines has been toward specialization for the different classes of rock in blast-hole work. Light, high-speed machines have been developed for soft ores and higher powered machines for hard ores.

"The paper describes a new method of interpreting the “canister test” data for the quantitative estimation of gas-kinetic parameters of coal bed based on the developed model of gas emission from coal sample placed in a sealed container. The model accounts for grain-size composition of the sample, initial gas content S, as well as coefficients of diffusion D and mass transfer ?. The inverse coefficient problem is formulated to find S, D and ??from the data of pressure measurements in the sealed container. It is shown that the inverse problem is uniquely solvable if the pressure is dropped during the experiment. The method has been tested using the data from an underground coal mine in the Kuznetsk Basin.Based on the poroelastic model of a coal bed and Khristianovich’s concept about origination and evolution of the filtration zone F in the neighborhood of a degassing borehole the authors considered the corresponding direct problem on rock mass geomechanical state. It was offered interpretation method for data on pressure measurements in a plugged degassing borehole allows evaluation of the diffusion coefficient, the horizontal component of natural stress field and parameters of F. The related inverse problem of the mixed type is formulated, and the cost function is constructed. The analysis using synthetic input data has shown that the cost function has a number of local minimums arranged on the same straight line, one of the minimums being the inverse problem solution. INTRODUCTIONPre-mine degassing is an integral part of coal mining. It allows mitigation of induced accidents in mines (coal and gas outbursts, rock bursts) (Guide, 1990; Malyshev & Airuni, 1999; Seidle, 2011) and also furnishes an alternative and ecology-friendly energy source—methane (Rice, 1997; Nambo, 2001). Choosing an optimized pattern of degassing boreholes, as well as estimating degassing time and amount of gas recovered requires data on gas-kinetics indices of coal beds out of which the key parameter is a gas content S. According to the latest guidelines for coal mines in Russia (Ruban et al, 2012), mining is allowed if S in a coal bed section is under 7 kg/m3."

"Novel silicate-alginate composite beads containing 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2- ethylhexyl ester (P507) were synthesized and applied for the adsorption of Nd3+ from aqueous solutions. The adsorption amount of Nd3+ has been increased owing to the introduction of P507. The effect of equilibrium pH (pHe), the kinetic and isotherm experiments were investigated. The adsorption reaches equilibrium at 9 h and the maximum uptake capacity is up to 195.4 mg/(g dry adsorbent). The Langmuir isotherm equations are used to describe the adsorption process. Complete desorption can be realized with 0.2 M HCl within 20 min. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) have found various applications in different domains, such as metallurgy industry, ceramic industry, nuclear fuel control, photo-electro-magnetic functional materials owing to their unique properties. Neodymium (Nd), as a representative of all of the most valuable REEs, is widely used as catalysts, laser crystals, capacitors, rubber additives, Nd-Fe-B magnets, hydrogen storage and so on. Thus, the separation and purification of neodymium is significant. Unfortunately, Nd always coexists with other REEs and selective separation of the individual Nd from the REEs mixtures is still extremely difficult owing to their strictly similar atomic structures and chemical properties.Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-liquid adsorption (SLA) are the most widely adopted techniques for the separation of REEs in the hydrometallurgical fields. The LLE process is well suited for large-scale continuous operation because of its inherent high capacity and fast kinetics. Nowadays, as a commercial extractant, 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) has been extensively studied for extraction and separation of REEs since it has considerably good extractability and high separation efficiency (Xu et al., 1992). SLA is one of the effective and green separation methods with some prominent advantages, such as easy regeneration of adsorbents, small footprint size, less industrial wastes, higher enrichment factors and column efficiency,rapid solid–liquid separation without emulsion and so on. Hence, the introduction of extractants with excellent performance into adsorbents will integrate the advantages of LLE and SLA (Lee et al., 2009)."

"The structural design of mine headframes is challenging due to the significant differences in the geometry, rigidity, and behaviour of these structures compared to conventional buildings. The differences are related to the main purpose of these structures, which is not human occupancy, but rather the support of hoisting equipment. The main objective of this paper is to present the seismic elastic behaviour of headframe structures in comparison with conventional buildings, which is the base case for the definition of seismic loads. This paper highlights the impact of backlegs on the dynamic behaviour of mine headframes, more specifically the resulting torsional sensitivity. INTRODUCTION The design of industrial structures is often governed by industrial processes rather than by architectural constraints. In ground-mounted hoisting plants, the structural configuration of headframes must allow clearances around conveyances and ropes while resisting the lateral loads associated with the hoisting equipment. Typically, these structures use backlegs to withstand the lateral loads, which leads to highly irregular structures with unconventional dynamic behaviour. The codes and standards applicable to the structural design of mine headframes in Canada are often incomplete or not adapted to the reality of practising engineers. This situation creates confusion, and engineers must look at various guidelines and international standards to support the engineering calculations required for the design of these structures. The loads resulting from the support of hoisting equipment, such as ropes and conveyances, are usually simple to calculate and are determined based on the information from manufacturer and industry related guidelines. Moreover, the loads associated with snow accumulation and wind are calculated applying the same methodology used for conventional buildings, without any major issues. On the other hand, the seismic loads are often difficult to calculate based on the methodology from the National Building Code of Canada due to the significant differences in the dynamic behaviour of the structures. The resulting structures may be either over-designed or worse, under-designed. Hence, there is a lack of uniformity in engineers’ designs. The latest edition of CSA S16-14 “Design of steel structures” includes Annex M (Informative) “Seismic design of industrial steel structures” to help designers close the gap between the requirements of traditional regulations and actual engineering practice."

"Removal of radium from uranium tailings would substantially lessen their environmental impact because it would eliminate, or greatly reduce, the hazards arising from radon emanation, leaching of radium, dust dispersal and gamma radiation. A process is described to extract radium from tailings by leaching in 3M Nael solution. The radium can be rapidly leached at ambient temperatures by either multi-stage contact in agitated vessels or washing on a tailings filter cake. Extraction efficiencies ranging from 80 to 94% have been measured for tailings derived from a number of Australian ores.Methods for radium recovery from the leach solution by precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption have been examined. Precipitation as barium/radium sulphate appears to be the most suitable approach. A possible flow diagram for the process is proposed which involves recycle of the saline leach liquor.IntroductionDisposal of mill tailings is the most contentious environmental issue facing the uranium mining industry. The conventional approach to managing tailings is to store them in a dam above ground. Attempts have been made to stabilize some tailings piles by physical or chemical methods. In a few cases, the tailings have been covered with earth and revegetated. However, most tailings piles from abandoned mills are in a neglected state and subject to the erosive and dispersive forces of nature. The cost of remedial action is high. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has estimated that it will cost up to $130 million to rehabilitate abandoned mill sites in the U.S .A..Environmental authorities are now insisting that uranium mining companies improve their methods of tailings disposal. In the United States, the preferred approach is burial, either in mines or in specially excavated pits. Tailings retention systems as operated in Canada are regarded as storage facilities until an acceptable method of disposal is found. In Australia, the Fox Commission recommended that tailings from the Ranger project should be returned to the open-cut mine. Returning tailings to the mine has considerable merit, but it is not always a viable option. In many underground operations, it is not physically possible to fit all the tailings in the worked-out mine. In other cases, the groundwater hydrology of the mine may be unfavourable."

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. "Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid leach tests were conducted on Elliot Lake and Rabbit Lake ores in the presence of various oxidants, namely: Fe2(SO4)3, CI2, H2O2, NaClO3, MnO2, H2SO5, HNO3, Oxon e, K2Cr2O7, KMnO4, O3 and O2. Uranium extraction is significantly accelerated when an oxidant is present in the leach slurry. Uranium extraction of 96-99% can be achieved by maintaining the oxidation potential of the leach slurry in the range of400 to 500 m V (S.H.E.). A rough cost comparison of all the oxidant s indicates that the use of Fe2(SO4)3, 02, O3, C12, HNO3 or MnO2 is far less expensive than NaClO3 and the uranium extraction rates are similar to or better than with NaCIO3. For uranium extraction, it is concluded that gaseous oxygen (i.e., air or oxygen) would be the most effective and economical oxidant for the 24- to 36-hour leach of Elliot Lake ore; whereas for the 8- to I2-hour leach of Rabbit Lake ore, a strong chemical oxidant (e.g. NaCIO3, H202, 03, K2Cr2O7, H2SO5 or HNO3) would be a logical choice.IntroductionThe common practice for the treatment of uranium o res is leaching with sulphuric acid or with a carbonate-bicarbonate mixture. Generally, the latter process is ad opted when an excess (> 18%) of acid-consuming components (e.g., carbonate) is present in the ore. Irrespective of the nature of the leachant, the addition of an oxidant to the leach mixture is necessary to obtain a high uranium extraction.The maximum extraction of uranium can only take place when all the uranium is in the highest oxidation state (i.e.,U +6-uranic ion) . Because a certain percentage of uranium present in the ore is invariably in the lower oxidation state (i.e.,U+4-uranous ion) , the addition of an oxidant to the leach slurry is necessary to oxidize uranous ion to the uranic state."

With the increasing awareness of the need for the reduction of carbon emissions globally, geothermal energy, which offers a potential for cleaner energy generation, is one potential new source. In Alberta, these geothermal resources are likely to be found in the sedimentary basin, or in the deeper crystalline basement rocks. Alberta exhibits a very low geothermal gradient compared to other existing geothermal fields located in areas of volcanic and tectonic activity. To mitigate this effect, the focus in Alberta will involve the development of engineered geothermal systems (EGS) in the target resource. The first goal for EGS research and development is to develop a detailed geological-geophysical characterization of selected sites to delineate potential geothermal reservoirs in Northern Alberta. One of the selected sites is in the Fort McMurray area. The deepest well drilled in the oilsands areas of Northern Alberta is located just west of Fort McMurray. It has a depth of 2363 m and as such can provide details on the physical properties of the rocks, the state of stress, and the existence of fracture porosity toward geothermal investigations. To date, we have acquired temperature logs to study the change in geothermal gradient with depth, and a series of petrophysical logs to study the finer scale structure of the rock formations with vertical resolutions in the range of 0.05 cm to 80 cm. Our aim is to identify geological features such as zones of fractures in the basin and/or basement that could provide an indication of enhanced fluid flow potential ? a necessary component for any geothermal systems to be viable. Zero offset and walkaway vertical seismic profiles (VSP) were also conducted to measure the seismic responses at the borehole. VSP data can be used to delineate the structural and stratigraphic features surrounding the borehole that could not be resolved from surface seismic reflection data that are also available near the borehole. The full integration of well logs, VSP data and surface seismic reflection data are expected to provide a detailed characterization of the sedimentary basin and crystalline basement rocks of the Canadian Shield in Northeastern Alberta and will assist in future planning for drilling.

With annual production of almost 3.5 million metric tonnes of K20, former East Germany (GDR) was the world?s third-largest producer of potash, ranking behind only the Soviet Union and Canada. More than 80 % of production was intended for export to earn urgently needed hard currency. For this reason, beginning in the 1970s, East Germany began to mine unprofitable hard-salt sources and carnallitite fields, which are geomechanically problematic. In the course of restructuring from a centrally planned to a market economy after German reunification, only two of the nine existing potash mines were classified as economically viable for privatization. All six potash mines in the South Harz Region were closed between 1991 and 1993. The orderly safekeeping of these potash and other decommissioned ore mines and the rededication of mining areas were assigned in 1992 to a German state-owned company GVV founded especially for this purpose. Elaboration in the present documentation covers the local necessity of the type and extent of filling and safeguarding measures. As a result of the remedial measures taken, it was possible to prevent the collapse of cavities and damage to surface facilities. This documentation describes the safeguarding successes to date, with appreciable reduction and stabilization of surface settlement and with significant lessening of seismic events. Also presented are concepts updated to the state of the art for safeguarding of numerous potash mining shafts for long-term effectiveness in separation of the workings and watercourse levels in the cap rock. In the course of 100 years of production, six mining dumps resulted with a total volume of approximately 170 million m3. They consist of up to 95 % of water-soluble salts. Every year, precipitation dissolves up to 500,000 tonnes of this salt, which enters as a highly concentrated solution into watercourses and ground water. Explanation follows of measures for minimization of environmental pollution by covering of dumps and controlled drainage of alkaline solutions from the dumps. Finally, presentation is made of the results of the successful work until now by GVV for reuse of decommissioned mining sites with settlement of new companies for creation of additional jobs and for revitalization of the monostructured South Harz Potash Mining Region.

"The efficiency of operation and life of an advancing longwall coalface depends, to a great extent. on the face-end roof strata conditions and the stability of the gateroads. The factors that influence the rate of closure of gateroads are examined, in particular the gateside pack and the coal rib (crush) pillars. The performance of mechanized packing systems is briefly discussed. Gateroad deformation surveys were carried out at two coal mines to determine the influence of the rib pillar width on gateroad stability; also, the influence of the gateside pack on the immediate roof and floor strata is analyzed based on strata bed displacement measurements from instruments installed in the gateroad and pack-hole of a longwall advancing face operating in a thick seam (7.55 m). The face-end region of a longwall advancing face is the center of mining activity, being the turn-around point for the coal cutting machine. and the place of gateroad formation and movement of special face-end supports. The design of face-end layouts can be aided by knowledge of strata control parameters, such as the effective loading of the immediate roof strata , convergence of the roof and floor, magnitude and distribution of fractures in the roof strata around the face-end , optimum placement of supports, coal seam thickness and strength characteristics, geometry of layout and interaction from neighbouring workings. Generally, the gateroad is formed by one of three face-end methods: (a) advanced headings, (b) in-line system (gateroad formed at the face) or (c) conventional ripping with or without stable elimination (also halfheading). The quality of gateroad is influenced principally by the face-end system employed, standard of gateside pack and width of pillar. A good standard of gateroad is generally achieved by employing the half-heading face-end system, the gateside pack and coal rib pillar having comparative support/ yield (stiffness factor) characteristics. However, the halfheading is often not favoured due to face operation restrictions."

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

On many occasions, operators have seen that high density and paste thickener performance does not meet the initial design expectations, and the installed equipment produces lower than expected thickener underflow solids content. This lower-density tailings slurry leads to more water and lower beaching angles being seen at the tailings storage facility (TSF). This not only reduces storage capacity, but also increases the risks of non-compliance with environmental permit constraints. Reasons for the shortfall in performance can be many, but perhaps the main problem is inadequate understanding of the critical components of thickener design and operation, with too much reliance placed on standardised design terminology; such as tph/m2. This paper discusses additional factors that influence high-density thickener operation and presents test work that defines “Dynamic Slurry Fluidity”, “Bed Compaction Rates”, and “Natural Slump Angles” for these high yield stress/viscosity slurries. Finally, the paper uses this data to define thickener geometry, drive torque, floor slope(s), rake blade configuration and how this can be used to provide engineers with more tools for in depth evaluation of a High-Density thickener design. INTRODUCTION Generally copper mines are high tonnage operations, with copper flotation concentrators producing high volumes of tailings slurries of milled solids and water. As a result, Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) become very large and this, along with potential scarcity of water, favours a design that maximises storage space. In theory, the use of filtration equipment that achieves immediate water recovery, high TSF in-situ densities and high stacking angles are preferred for this duty. However, large tailings filter units are uncommon, and have high operating and capital costs that favour the use of thickeners. The use of high-density thickeners to produce a thick or near-paste like slurry with high un- sheared yield stress values above 100 Pascals, is becoming more common. The higher thickener underflow is required to not only maximise water recirculation within the mill, but to also increase beaching angles, maximise tailings storage capacity and minimise evaporation losses arising from large areas of superficial water. However, the reliability of this equipment is also under scrutiny and there is perhaps a need to better define these designs.

Abstract The Poulter seismic method of geophysical exploration is an attempt to obtain an increased efficiency in the conversion of the energy of an m~pl06ion into useful energy which has directive properties and which contains a minimum of random frequency and random phase relations. Very little effort has been made in the past to simplify OT even control the uniformity of the seismic energy being introduced into the ground. The Poulter seismic method is also an attempt to improve the signal-to-noise ratio not merely by trying to complete the impartial filtering done by the earth on ,the continuous spectrum of primarily high-frequency energy radiated from a shot point but by applying a frequency control at the point of origin of the seismic wave. The energy from a shot-hole charge is peaked in a frequency which is much higher than will be transmitted through the ground, and its absorption introduces background interference. Only 10 to 20 per cent of the seismic energy of a shot-hole charge .is directed downward in a 90-degree vertical cone, whereas, from a pattern of charges detonated above the surface of the ground, 85 per cent of the seismic energy is included in a 90-degree cone and in some cases it is even confined to as small as a 30-degree cone. This greatly reduces the horizontally distributed energy, thereby producing a marked improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio. The frequency of the signal energy may be peaked in a rather narrow range by the proper application of two or more impulses upon the surface of the ground controlled as to direction, magnitude, and timing. These impulses may be controlled by the reflection shock wave technique, the pressure pulse technique, and the sequence firing technique, using the primary controls as outlined. The information obtained from the study of directivity of seismic energy in a high velocity, uniform material such as the ice on Taku glacier, in the Juneau ice field in Alaska, has been of great assistance in the application of the method to oilfield and mining problems.

"The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."
