"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."

"The proportion of arsenic-bearing copper concentrates that supply the copper industry is on the increase. The current strategy of miners and smelters to blend feeds to reduce average arsenic levels is rapidly becoming unsustainable as more concentrates with even higher arsenic levels enter the marketplace. In addition, the capability of smelters to manage increasing arsenic levels to more stringent and restrictive environmental standards is limited by available process technologies.CESL Cu-As Technology is a viable technical and economic alternative to traditional smelting. It offers the advantage of simultaneous leaching and precipitation of the arsenic in a single processing step while achieving high copper extractions. The process has been piloted in six separate, fully-integrated pilot campaigns for feeds ranging from ~1% to 12% arsenic in concentration. This paper will focus on the behaviour of arsenic in CESL’s leaching/precipitation step and operational factors that influence it, and on the chemical and physical characteristics of the subsequent iron-arsenic residue that represents today’s best available technology from a long-term sustainable (capital/operating costs, metal recovery, safety, environmental) perspective.The examples provided will demonstrate copper extractions approaching 99% and arsenic deportment to residue of 99%. Instantaneous settling rates of the residue were measured at 15+ m/hr. Data from subsequent short and long-term stability testing of the residue confidently support the view that the scorodite-bearing residues from the process will be stable and provide an acceptable arsenic management practice. The technology offers increased revenue and environmental certainty for miners, smelters & refiners to support the development of metallurgically challenged copper-arsenic deposits. Furthermore, results will be presented demonstrating the technology’s ability to successfully incorporate hazardous arsenic containing smelter by-products such as dust into the process feed and simultaneously extract copper value while fixing the arsenic in a stable residue."

In August, 1970, during routine shaft grouting, a major water source was intersected. Water and quicksand under very high pressure entered the shaft at a rate of 65 m3 per minute. The mine and both shafts were flooded. The breach was sealed simultaneously from within the shaft and through a relief hole drilled from surface. The mine was dewatered, rehabilitated and the equipment was restored. Production resumed two years after the accident.

"Open pit mines can produce large disturbances within regional hydrogeologic systems. The degree of disturbance and the consequences on the local environment depend on the size of the pit and on the physical setting of the mine. Comparisons and contrasts are presented for three Noranda base metal open pit mine sites.The Brunswick Mining and Smelting No 6 open pit has a surface area of 11 ha and a depth of 185 m. It is located within complexly deformed schists and meta-volcanic rocks. The massive sulphide and iron formations visible along the north and southwest walls of the pit generate acid drainage. Mining ceased in 1983, and the pit is presently being filled with waste rock and neutralized drainage water. Water balance calculations estimated a total fill up time of sixteen years. As the water level rises, leakage to groundwater could take place across a fault zone intersecting the pit.The Mattabi Mines F-Group pit has a surface area of approximately 3 ha and a depth of 50 m and is also set in meta-volcanic rocks and acid generating iron formations. Production at this site ceased in 1982, and the low pH pit water is neutralized and pumped into a nearby lake at least every five years. Major water inflows are from precipitation and groundwater. Groundwater mounds within adjacent high land surrounding the pit provide a natural hydraulic barrier to groundwater flow, except for the southeast side. As a consequence, the pit water elevation is being kept below the elevation of the nearby creek in which some of the pit water could drain.The Bell Copper open pit covers an area of 40 ha and is 270 m deep. With present ore reserves, the mine might be in operation until 1992. The geology around the pit consists of andesitic tufts, siltstones and shales, and the acid generation potential of the rock is relatively low. A recent hydrogeological study estimated fill up time by precipitation and groundwater to be in the order of 260 years.With increasingly more stringent requirements for mine closure, it is anticipated that more detailed hydrological and hydrogeological studies of open pits will be required to determine post-closure environmental impacts and the suitability of open pits for mine waste disposal."

"A pressure non-oxidative leach is employed at Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners to extract nickel from a slow cooled matte. The design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves in parallel to achieve a nickel extraction of 60% at the nameplate capacity of 32.4 ktpa nickel plated. Isothermal modelling of mineralogical and chemical concentration profiles, through a reactive mass balance, permitted rate constant parameter estimation and selection of the most probable reaction pathway. The model was validated with plant data up to a capacity of 26 ktpa Ni plated and suggested by extrapolation that nameplate capacity may be viable through one 80 m3 autoclave.INTRODUCTION Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners is situated on the outskirts of Rustenburg in the North-West province of South-Africa. The refinery produces nickel cathode, copper cathode, cobalt sulphate powder, covellite rich copper pressure leach residue and bulk sodium sulphate through an integrated circuit that refines slow cooled converter matte. The converter matte is milled, non-magnetics are separated as solid nickel copper matte (NCM), and the magnetics are leached yielding a pressure vessel liquor (PVL). The remaining solid platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate after leaching is sent for downstream processing in the Precious Metals Refinery (Hofirek & Kerfoot, 1992). The work presented here is applicable to the base metals refinery which receives the two base metals feed stocks NCM and PVL. In 2009 the capacity of the refinery was upgraded from 21 ktpa nickel cathode plated to 32.4 ktpa. This paper deals with evaluating the capacity of the pressurised non-oxidative nickel leach (NOX) process which accounts for at least 28% of the nickel leached from NCM by design. The NOX design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves divided into four compartments operated in parallel at 155°C and 600kPa(g). Elevated temperature is required to speed up the leach kinetics of particularly nickel and iron which are trapped in slow leaching mineralogical phases namely millerite and bornite, (Dinham, 2006). The stated equivalent capacity for the NOX configuration was 32.9 ktpa nickel plated at first pass nickel and iron leach efficiencies of 60% and above 80% respectively and is a key step for the selective removal of iron (Bryson, Hofirek, Collins, Stiksma, & Bereaowsky, 2008)."

"The seismic hazard for civil engineering structures is generally defined in terms of deterministic or probabilistic acceleration response spectra at an equivalent rock outcropping. The design of tunnels, however, requires the definition of demands in terms of accelerations at ground surface (near the portals) and in terms of both accelerations and velocities at different depths within the alignment. The design near the portals is controlled by inertial effects and is often times impacted by the possibility of slope instability and rockfall, whereas the design at deep sections is controlled by kinematic effects. These effects are accounted for in practice by introducing deformation patterns in the structure that are related to an assumed wavefield, often times ignoring the effect of the structural stiffness in the response. This paper presents a study regarding the definition of seismic demands for different sections of 14-km long tunnel in the Andes (Argentina-Chile), with a maximum overburden of 1750 m in a seismically active region. The tunnel will pass through volcanic massifs mainly composed by andesites and rhyolites.The study includes the definition of spectrum-compatible seismograms, deconvolution, and definition of accelerations and peak particle velocities for different overburden conditions. A kinematic interaction study for a 500-m tall ventilation chimney shaft is also described, where a simple formulation for the interaction analysis is considered in order to more accurately evaluate shear and bending demands. INTRODUCTIONThe seismic design of linear underground structures, such as shafts and tunnels, generally considers the inertial forces near the shallow sectors (e.g., portals) and the kinematically imposed deformations for the deep sections (e.g., Hashash et al. 2001). The inertial forces are often times evaluated on the basis of design spectra recommended by seismic hazard studies. The kinematic demands for the deeper sections, however, needs to be defined in terms of additional information which is not always indicated by the seismic hazard studies, e.g.; peak particle velocities and accelerations, and their variation with depth. These parameters can be determined by means of a site response analysis, whereby outcrop motions can be deconvoluted in order to evaluate motions inside the ground mass (e.g., Schnabel et al., 1972). Hashash et al. (2001) defines factors that may be used in order to account for attenuation of motions inside the ground mass. However, these factors are provided for depths up to 30 m only, whereas depths of tunnels structures can range up to thousands of meters."

"The Gondor Zn-Ag-Pb-Cu deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide lens occurring within Archean volcaniclastic rocks of the Yellowknife Supergroup. The deposit is located in the west-central portion of the Slave Structural Province, approximately 350 km north of Yellowknife.Initial diamond drilling at Gondor has outlined a steeply dipping, L-shaped, folded, massive sulphide body, which may be traced over a strike length of approximately 800 m, and to a depth of 350 m. True widths of up to 40 m have been intersected in the thickest part of the deposit. Preliminary estimates suggest that the deposit contains a minimum of 7.5 million tonnes grading 6% Zn, 50 g/tonne Ag and less than I% combined Cu and Pb. In addition, significant gold, grading up to 2.8 g/tonne, occurs in some parts of the deposit. The mineralization is open both down-dip and along strike.The Gondor deposit lies conformably within a predominantly east-west striking, north-facing sequence of felsic to intermediate volcaniclastic rocks. Coarse fragmental rocks are abundant in the hanging wall, whereas ash and lapilli-tuffs predominate in the footwall. The main structural feature in the area is a large-scale, steeply northeast-plunging, Z-shaped fold. The sulphide mineralization lies within the synformal portion of this fold, with the thickest part of the deposit coinciding with its hinge zone. Several episodes of faulting have also affected the local stratigraphy.The wallrocks of the Gondor deposit were hydrothermally altered prior to the onset of medium-grade regional metamorphism. A halo of altered rocks surrounds the massive sulphide lens, with no apparent difference in the degree of alteration between the hanging wall and footwall strata. The alteration zone is characterized by the addition of MgO and K20 and by the depletion of Na20 and CaO. These changes are reflected in the mineralogy of the altered wallrocks by local enrichment in chlorite, biotite, muscovite and cordierite.The mineralized zone is medium- to coarse-grained, well-banded and is composed largely of pyrite, quartz, and sphalerite with subordinate galena and chalcopyrite. Preliminary studies of metal distribution indicate that a lateral zonation is present, with lead enrichment in the central part of the deposit, and copper enrichment toward both ends. Stringer-type copper mineralization has not yet been discovered in the footwall of the Gondor deposit."

"A regional till sampling program in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes area, centred some 70km west of the city of Bathurst, has proven an effective method for gold exploration in the heavily glaciated interior of northern New Brunswick. Prospecting activities within this area over the past three years, have led to the discovery of several gold occurences associated with quartz-carbonate alteration in a variety of intrusive rock types emplaced along major fault zonesQuaternary mapping shows that the glacial history is complex. However, the displacement of material is uniform in distance and direction, and the till is generally thin (0.5 m to 2.0 m) and locally derived, making the interpretation of till geochemical patterns relatively simple for the explorationist. Previous studies have shown the the fin e-grained gold is best detected in the -250 mesh (-0.063 mm) till fraction (clay plus silt) and that the C-horizon is the preferred medium for analyses.Samples were collected on a 2 km grid and analyzed f or Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag, As, Sb, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, and Cd. Results indicate that concentrations of 10 to 20 ppb Au can effectively delineate areas of anomalous gold in bedrock associated with fault structures, and that a good potential for discoveries exists to the west of the known occurrences, where up to 678 ppb A u has been detected in tills. IntroductionThis paper reports on the result s of surficial geological investigations conducted over the past two field seasons in north-central New Brunswick. The stud y area is located in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes map area s (N.T.S. 21 0 19 and 21 0 (10) 70 km west of the city of Bathurst (Fig. I). The area is situated on the margin of the New Brunswick Highlands and has a maximum elevation of 640 m (for a detailed description of the physiography, see Rampton et al. 1984).Historically, exploration in northern New Brunswick has concentrated on base metals within the Cambro-Ordovician Tetagouche Group, resulting in the discovery of man y significant massive sulphide deposits (Brunswick No.6 and No. 12, Heath Steele, Caribou, Armstrong Brook, Orvan Brook, McMaster, Murray Brook, and Restigouche). Auriferous base metal occurrences along the Rocky Brook-Millstream Fault have also been previously investigated."

New Gold?s New Afton mine is an 11,000 tonne per day block caving mine, located 8 km west of the city of Kamloops, British Columbia. The reserve is estimated at 52.5Mt with grades of 0.65 g/t Au and 0.93% Cu. Block caving requires a considerable amount of infrastructure development before production can begin. Each excavation had its own challenges, often further complicated by interactions with the caving stresses and fault structures. The main areas of interest were: the production crusher complex, the surface to underground infrastructure, and the footprint interaction with the faults. The ore zone at New Afton is bounded by two very weak fault zones, with large fault affected areas and associated splays. The resulting rock mass rating (RMR) is 35-50, with some areas significantly weaker due to clay infill. These conditions created a unique and decidedly difficult environment in which to develop New Afton?s infrastructure. Despite these difficulties, the mine began production on schedule in July 2012. The main production crusher for the mine is a gyratory crusher that allows for direct truck dumping, with a smaller jaw crusher in series to facilitate the initial development and production. The crusher chamber was redesigned several times to minimize the chamber volume, resulting in a 40% decrease in volume without losing functionality. After drilling and geotechnical testing, the location of the crusher was changed to eliminate the threat of fault affected ground in the area; the entire complex moved a short time before mining began on the chamber. The mining techniques used enabled tight control of the crusher pocket excavation, while also allowing for the timely completion of the chamber. The locations of the surface to underground infrastructure were tightly constrained by geology, surface infrastructure, and an existing open pit. The VR5 raise was drilled and abandoned part way through the reaming process when the drill string became stuck in fault gouge material. It was relocated and successfully completed. The VR7 raise hit a region of poor rock strength and deviated more than 11 m. Poor ground conditions caused a 130m section of the raise walls to fail. An innovative rehabilitation program was undertaken to re-establish the raise for ventilation. A surface to underground slick line was also installed to ease the material movement underground. A layout of the Extraction level was changed from herring bone to straight through drawpoints that resulted in a net reduction of 1.3 km of development. The Apex level was added to aid in the breakage over the major apex pillar and allow for geological mapping. A portion of the caving footprint is located within the footwall fault. The low strength, high clay content, and small joint spacing of the material resulted in blast-hole cut-off and drift deformation. Drift rehabilitation was a key factor in the successful development of the cave footprint. Innovative drilling and loading techniques were used to keep the holes open and to impede movement along the joint structures.

"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. "Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. Cependant, les données de MEGATEMII démontrent que le dépôt de New Insco a une haute valeur de la constante de décroissance, ce qui reflète une plus forte conductivité. "Abstract - The Domeyko Cordillera, the westernmost uplifted crustal block of the composite High Andes of northern Chile (20°S to 28°S) hosts a narrow N-S trending belt of Late Eocene-Oligocene giant porphyry copper deposits, which include Collahuasi, Chuquicamata, El Abra, La Escondida, and El Salvador. These deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the closing igneous activity along this range, prior to a 30 km eastward jump of the magmatic front in response to tectonic plate interaction. The porphyry copper deposits are also spatially associated with a major intraarc strike-slip shear system, the Domeyko Fault System. Although the tectonic uplift of the 3000 m to 5000 m high range has generally been assumed to be mostly Miocene in age, field relationships suggest that the Domeyko Fault System and tectonic uplift were active as early as the Eocene, coinciding with porphyry copper emplacement between 41 Ma and 30 Ma. Apatite fission track (FT) thermochronology provides both age data and a time-temperature history for rocks since they cooled below a temperature of ca. 125°C (equivalent to a depth of 4 km to 5 km under normal geothermal gradients) on their way to the surface during exhumation, or after a heating event. Apatite FT data from the Paleozoic crystalline basement of the Domeyko Cordillera indicate that at least 4 km to 5 km of rocks were eroded during exhumation of this tectonic block between ca. 50 Ma to 30 Ma (Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene), a time that immediately precedes and overlaps with the emplacement of giant porphyry copper deposits. The FT data constrain the age and duration of a period of crustal thickening and extensive erosion known as the Incaic compression, an event recognized in the Andes of Chile and Peru. Assuming that cooling was due to denudation alone, modelling of the FT data allow estimation of denudation rates between 200 and 100 m/My during this period. In contrast, exposures of pre-porphyry Paleocene intrusives on the western edge of the Domeyko Cordillera reveal apatite FT ages that are concordant with biotite 40Ar-39Ar dates, indicating shallow emplacement, fast cooling and negligible exhumation. The apatite FT ages of the Chuquicamata and El Abra porphyry copper deposits are only marginally younger than their 40Ar-39Ar dates, implying fast cooling/exhumation of shallow mineralizing systems (ca. 2 km to 3 km). Their FT time-temperature history is compatible with extremely low rates of exhumation (ca. 50 m/My) since about 30 Ma (Early Oligocene). This limited extent of erosion, due to exceptional aridity, has greatly contributed to the preservation of rich supergene enriched blankets above some of the porphyry copper deposits.A model is proposed, which is consistent with field relationships, geochemical, and geochronological data. High relative velocities and intermediate-angle oblique convergence between the Nazca and South American plates in the Eocene-Early Oligocene led to intra-arc transpression partitioned into reverse faults of opposing vergence and a right-lateral shear system (the Domeyko Shear System) localized along the magmatic front. Crustal shortening and thickening led to uplift within the Domeyko Fault System and to erosion of at least 4 km to 5 km. Crustal thickening deepened the zone of magma generation, and magmas accumulated in the lower crust, allowing small volumes to rise rapidly to shallow levels along transtensional domains of the regional shear system. A similar model of crustal thickening and shortening before and during porphyry copper emplacement in zones of transtension may also apply to the Miocene-Pliocene giant porphyry copper province of central Chile."

Dunsmuir Ventures? Nanuq diamond project is located approximately 250 km northeast of Baker Lake and 170 km north of Chesterfield Inlet. It occurs at the intersection of the Wager Bay shear zone with the Keewatin Arch, a major long-lived crustal uplift. The newly discovered diamondiferous kimberlites at Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and on Melville Peninsula also occur along this arch. Kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) sampling has outlined a distinct KIM train more than 35 km long and 6 km wide. Geomorphological studies, boulder displacements and dispersion of magnetite in tills suggest that glacial transport distances were on the order of 4 to 6 kms only. The presence of multiple sources within the main Nanuq indicator train would account for its length and breadth. A second train has been located on the west central part of the property and anomalous concentrations of KIM occur elsewhere. Pyrope garnets (G9?s and G10?s), diamond inclusion field (DI) eclogitic garnets and DI chromites were confirmed by microprobe analyses. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry indicates a cool geotherm, approximately 35 mW/m2, and that mantle within the diamond stability field was tapped. An aeromagnetic survey has identified a number of anomalies. Those with down ice KIM support will have ground geophysical follow-up and will be tested in a spring 2004 drill program. Dunsmuir is optimistic that this will lead to the discovery of a new kimberlite cluster on the Nanuq property.

"The Penna shaft is the deepest single-lift shaft in North America. Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240-m deep shaft. Exploration success at depth led to the replacement of the existing double drum hoist by another double drum hoist capable of hoisting 7000 t/d. The use of another double drum hoist, instead of a Blair multi-rope winder, to hoist 24.5 t skips was only made possible by lowering the safety factor.This paper describes recent experiences at Penna and in South Africa, and examines the possibility of extending the double drum hoisting system to a depth of 3 km. IntroductionThe original Penna production hoist was a 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter double drum and single clutch machine. Béliveau (1996) and Scott (1996) have described this hoisting plant. In 1998, a decision was made to increase mining capacity from 1800 t to 4500 t of ore per day from the shaft bottom. Final capacity had to include an allowance of 1800 t of waste per day for future capital projects. While daily capacity was to be 6300 t, it would, by taking into account the different rock densities, be equivalent to hoisting 7000 t of ore.The steps taken to lower the safety factor were presented by McLaughlin and Scott"

"An index to evaluate the amenability for processing of different coals is implemented. The index is based on the well-known Mayer-curve or M-curve. The index is superior to other existing indices and is implemented using Microsoft-Excel™. Several coals are used to demonstrate the implementation of the index proposed.IntroductionIn 1950, Mayer introduced a curve that carries the information embedded in the fir s t three curves or ash curves of the conventional washability tables and curves (Peng et al., 1979; Osborne, 1988). The curve was labeled the Mcurve (abbreviation for Mittlewertkurve in German or the Mayer- curve). The main idea behind the curve is to use the ordinate for the cumulative mass and the abscissa for the ash (attribute) mass. Specific slopes on the resulting curve represent the cumulative float, cumulative sink, and elementary ash (attribute) contents (Mayer, 1950, 1953, 1957; Venkatesan, 1975; Osborne, 1988; Salama, 1989). Beyond the ash values, the curve carries graphical information that can be used in evaluating coal processing characteristics. Consequently, it becomes possible to present several raw coals on a single diagram, thus making it easier to compare their processing characteristics. This is particularly useful in comparing various size ranges of raw coal or the same size range from different seams. Therefore, the M-curve is adopted as a vehicle for developing the “processing (washing) characteristics index” implemented in this paper."

The technical feasibility of ammonia leaching of PGM bearing Platreef flotation concentrates was investigated as an alternative method for the recovery of base metals prior to precious metal recovery. The composition of the concentrates includes 2.02% Cu and 3.17% Ni, and the major base metal minerals are chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Optimal leaching conditions were initially established in shake flask experiments to be a solution containing 4 M NH4OH, 4 M (NH4)2CO3 and a pH range between 9 and 10. These were used as base case conditions in column and batch stirred tank reactor tests, where the effects of total ammonia concentration and operating temperature were explored further. At optimal conditions nearly 100% Cu and Ni extraction were obtained in the batch stirred tank reactor, and 95% Cu and 60% Ni extraction was obtained in columns. The activation energy for chalcopyrite and pentlandite was 36 kJ/mol and 16 kJ/mol, respectively, in both reactors, indicating different reaction pathways for the two minerals. Gas-liquid mass transfer appears to be the limiting reaction step in columns much more than in tanks, and the degree of ammonia loss to air is significant. This initial test work indicates the feasibility of using ammonia leaching for this and similar materials as an alternative route to conventional smelting and refining prior to PGM recovery, but a number of technical challenges still need to be overcome.

The Gypo quartz vein lies near Oliver, British Columbia, and was quarried between 1955 and 1968 for decorative chips. The vein is one of many quartz veins hosted by the Late Jurassic Oliver Plutonic Complex, specifically by the porphyritic quartz monzonite phase of the pluton. The vein has a known length of 155m and a thickness of 46m. It strikes east-west and dips at 60 degrees to the south. Mineralogy is predominantly quartz with minor pyrite, muscovite, fluorite, calcite, apatite and manganese; trace amounts of chalcopyrite, pyrrh otite, marcasite and molybdenite also are present. Quartz in the vein is zoned. A thin grey quartz zone found near the margins of the vein fades gradually into white quartz, which comprises over 95% of the vein. Late-stage boxworks cut earlier mineralization, particularly fluorite, which occurs as pods in a zone fairly close to the hanging wall. Sulphide minerals are found in a centrally located zone in the quartz vein. The hanging wall of the Gypo veins is altered only slightly, but thefootwall is altered extensively to a greisen of muscovite and grey quartz. Evidence suggests that early in rhe vein development, the adjoining country rock was feldspathized. As grey quartz and muscovite was deposited, a period of intensive greisenization and fracturing occurred which so weakened the rock that a central block of greisenized country rock foundered. This provided the open space in which the vein was deposited.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

"This paper studies the characterization and dissolution of a Nigerian pyrolusite ore, reporting the results of ore physicochemical analyses and detailed ore characterization before and after leaching at optimal conditions. Ore dissolution rate increased proportional to acid concentration and temperature, but decreased with ore particle size. In a 4 M H2SO4 solution at 80°C with a particle size of –90+75 µm and moderate agitation, ore dissolution rate reached 78.7%. Unleached residue produced under optimal leaching conditions consisted of silica with admixtures of cristobalite and stishovite. The calculated activation energy supported the proposed diffusion control mechanism for the process.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article étudie la caractérisation et la dissolution d’un minerai de pyrolusite du Nigeria, il donne les résultats des analyses physicochimiques du minerai et de la caractérisation détaillée du minerai avant et après la lixiviation sous des conditions optimales.
