"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. NOTATIONS-EQUATIONSFor the purpose of the paper, a particle will be characterized by its volume Vp, and its volumetric composition with respect to a mineral of interest, which will be given the notation ""O"". "A FIRE which forced the sealing -of the east side of Dominion No. 16 Colliery in the Town of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, occurred on October 6th, 1952 (Figure 1).So far as can be ascertained, the fire was first noticed in the roof of No. 7 East Lateral, after a brushing shot had been fired in the pavement. There appears to .be no doubt that this shot •blew out, igniting a small feeder in the roof.Regular air measurements and air samples, taken over a long period prior to the fire, indicated that the ventilation was adequate, for at no time had the percentage of CH4 in the general air current exceeded one per cent in this location. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is developing a disposal strategy for radioactive wastes, which contain significant amounts of uranium, cesium, and mercury. There are safety and economic incentives for the extraction of these elements before permanent storage in deep underground repositories. In addition, the actinide elements are also an important component in rare earth element (REE) ores and considered as impurities. Actinides separation from REE tailings is a significant concern in order to manage radioactive nuclides. Reprocessing mine wastes may present significant financial and environmental benefits. Experiments were carried out with radioactive cemented wastes (RCW) prepared at CanmetMINING. For all of the tested RCW batches, solubilisation yields are above 97% for Cs and 98% for U and Hg. Sulphuric acid leaching with potassium iodide improved the solubilisation of Hg by oxidation and formation of the tetraiodide complex (e.g. HgI4 2-, Kf = 2.1030). Cs and Hg were removed selectively by using potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (KCFC) and Lewatit TP214 ion-exchange resin respectively. U recovery using the chelating resin Lewatit TP260 was the most efficient. The presence of high iodine concentration improved the U uptake by the resin. The best U elution was obtained using 1 M Na2CO3, which resulted in 99% U recovery. U was then precipitated as sodium diuranate. A counter current effluent recirculation was performed successfully on RCW. The process was also applied to submerged tailings collected from two U mines and an REE ore. This work reports on applying iron oxide coated sands media in an experimental permeable reactive barrier to remove uranium species from uranium containing water. A field experiment was conducted at the legacy Gunnar uranium mine & mill site that was abandoned in the 1960s with limited to no decommissioning. The flooded Gunnar mine pit presently contains about 3.2 million m3 of water contaminated by dissolved U (1.2 mg/l), Ra-226 (0.4 Bq/l), and minor concentrations of other contaminants (As, Se, etc.). The water is seeping over the pit rim into Lake Athabasca posing environmental and health concerns. Iron oxide coated sands can be used to immobilize uranium species through an adsorption process. Methods for preparation of hydrous ferric oxide sorbents and their supported forms onto silica sands are described. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) were used to characterize the physical-chemical properties of the sorbent. The monolayer uranium uptake capacity (Qm) was estimated through the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Adsorption kinetic experiments were performed in a lab environment before moving to a field trial. Based on these lab results and the input on field-scale appropriate geometries, a pilot permeable reactive barrier was fabricated and a field test conducted near the Gunnar pit in June 2019. This pilot test provided technical data and information needed for designing a full-scale permeable barrier based on the iron oxide coated sands, which may be applied for in-situ water treatment at Gunnar and other legacy uranium sites.

Nowadays, all French former uranium mining sites are remediated and redeveloped. If needed, mining waters containing radium have to be treated before discharged into the environment. Classical radium treatment consists in a (Ba,Ra)SO4 salt precipitation and radium monitoring was carried out using a time-consuming analysis called emanometry. Three zeolite samples have been tested to remove 226Ra from mining water. In batch experiment, radium was totally (R=100%) and quickly removed after 2 minutes contact time. Continuous sorption experiments were carried out through a vertical column at lab scale. Chabazite is the most efficient zeolite with an 226Ra activity below 0.2 Bq/L until 60000 Bed Volume. Chabazite is always efficient although radium content in material reaches 150 Bq/g. 226Ra uptake was also tested at semi-industrial scale on a pilot plant. More than 3000 m3 were successfully treated with a radium content below 0.1 Bq/L. The environmental impact assessment of Ra-chabazite was characterized by using batch leaching tests made according to the NF EN 12457-2 standard as applied on all wastes. Ra-chabazite stability is excellent during this test: radium leaching is very low, less than 0.005%. A new 226Ra measurement method was developed by ICP-MS for a better analysis reactivity. This new method was carried out in a couple of minutes with a lower sample volume than emanometry. The validation was performed according to the French NF T90-210 standard for the calibration function definition, the limit of quantification, the accuracy and the interferences.

"Many alternative leaching systems including bacterial leaching have been introduced to avoid passivation on the surface of chalcopyrite and to increase the leaching efficiency of copper from chalcopyrite. Recently, glycine, one of the simplest amino acids, has been emerging as an efficient and environmental-friendly lixiviant to recover copper. In the present study, an alkaline glycine–peroxide lixiviant system was used to leach copper from chalcopyrite concentrate and the leaching mechanisms were also investigated by a suite of kinetic studies under different conditions. The chalcopyrite concentrate contains 28.8% copper with 30.8% sulfide sulfur. The effect of concentration of glycine and hydrogen peroxide of the leaching solution was investigated. Glycine concentration was varied from 0.5 to 1.0 M and the hydrogen peroxide concentration was changed between 3 to 5%. Leaching time and pulp density were also varied. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidant of the system and the leaching efficiency with periodic additions of the peroxide was also studied. A mineralogical study was performed using XRD and SEM. To investigate the surface of the residue materials, XPS was used to see if any passivating layer was formed during the leaching. Detailed results from mineralogical, chemical, and metallurgical studies will be presented and discussed.INTRODUCTION The greatest global resource of copper is low-grade chalcopyrite and heap bioleaching may be the only economic option for its processing. However, formation of a passivating layer on the surface of chalcopyrite slows down the oxidation reaction and reduces the efficiency of the process."

"Demonstrations of Automatic Coal Burning EquipmentAT THE 1951 and 1952 Annual Coal Research Conferences sponsored by the Dominion Coal Board and attended by delegates from the Dominion and Provincial governments as well as industry, the importance ,of encouraging the co-operative interest of Canadian coal and equipment industries in •promoting the use of equipment types best suited to burn given Canadian coals was emphasized. It. was suggested that this idea •be enlarged upon at forthcoming C.I.M. meetings that would be .attended largely by coal mining engineers.With this in view, a Domestic Heating Forum (1) was featured in the Coal Division programme at the 1951 Annual Western Meeting of the Institute in Calgary, and a much more ambitious programme, highlighted by live demonstrations, was •staged at the combined Annual Western Meeting and Fourth Meeting of District 4 held in Winnipeg in October 1952.With the excellent co-operation of a number of equipment manufacturers and coal companies, and with facilities kindly provided •by the University •of Manitoba authorities, burning demonstrations were• arranged in the Agricultural Engineering Building, on October l 7th. These demonstrations were a fitting sequel to the Coal Division sessions held in the Royal Alexandra Hotel on October 16th, at which the combustion of coal was specially featured in a series of papers by prominent Canadian and United States specialists.The primary purpose of the demonstrations was to •show that all coal, regardless •of rank, can be satisfactorily used provided that proper application is made with equipment suited to its purpose."

"HPAL and POX autoclave vapor-space gasses are vented through an autoclave PCV (Pressure Control Valve). The downstream steam-born mist of liquid droplets and solid particles travels in excess of 1000 m/s with megawatts of kinetic power at temperatures up to 160 C. The characteristics of downstream states often result in problems with corrosion, erosion, noise and vibration. Comprehension of those and related characteristics aids in improved pressure control, overpressure control and autoclave level control. We introduce compressible multiphase flow concepts and constructs germane to such flow including choked flow, continuous phase change, shock waves and supersonic flow plumes. Flow modeling based on first principles quantitatively predicts such flows providing a tool for component sizing and a method to estimate effects of water injection on flow. Insight deduced from modeling aids in mitigation of afore mentioned problems of which we share some from-site examples.INTRODUCTION First principles related to fluid thermodynamics and compressible flow have been employed akin to their application in the rocket industry. We will present the results of the application of those principles conceptually and authentically without mathematical rigour while using language of the pertinent disciplines. The autoclave (AC) vapor space over the slurry of a POX (Pressure Oxidation) or HPAL (High-Pressure Acid Leach) system (depicted in Figure 1) is vented via a PCV (pressure control valve) followed by certain ducting, and perhaps a nozzle, before exiting at atmospheric (typically) pressure. As indicated by its name the PCV controls the AC pressure as the flow control component of a pressure control loop."

It used to be that a science/engineering presentation on "light weight" at a metallurgy conference, would relate to the materials science, processing, component fabrication and applications of aluminum, magnesium and titanium. Within the automotive industry, light weight now includes how to "lighten up", how to lightweight, or how to mass reduce vehicle components and systems. Increasingly stringent global emissions-reduction requirements require increasing vehicle fuel efficiency; mass reduction is an enabler to achieve this. While light metals certainly are the basis, a host of other materials can be used to optimize mass reduction while meeting vehicle performance, safety and cost requirements. New grades of ultrahigh strength steels and even nanosteels can be thinned down and save over 1/3 the mass vs conventional mild steels. A compacted graphite cast iron engine can be made lighter than an aluminum one. Aluminum components in vehicles were only castings; now aluminum stampings, forgings and extrusions are becoming more visible components of mass reduction. Lower mass high temperature polymers, and carbon fiber polymer composites now replace aluminum and steel. These materials often require specialized processing and manufacturing techniques to produce a component, including superplastically formed twin roll cast sheet aluminum and magnesium, and hot stamped/in-mold quenched steels. The assembly of hybrid structures requires unique joining/bonding, and corrosion-inhibiting techniques that might include sophisticated structural adhesives. This thinking "light" presentation, will conclude with a discussion of U.S. and Canadian government engineering and research support for mass reduction, including the proposed $148 M American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

"A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry ""vehicle"" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company's mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface chemistry changes brought about by the high lime additions. Lime additions which typically increased the tailing pH from 8.4 to 11.5 reduced the critical deposition velocities from approximately 3.2 to 1.7 m/sec.IntroductionCommon practice, at least in base metal concentrators in British Columbia, is to use high lime additions in tailing slurries when the pipeline becomes partially plugged with sands. Some concentrators, such as the Highmont Mining Co. Ltd. plant, add lime on a continuous basis during low tonnage periods and during startup/shutdown transition s. Although such high lime additions often solve temporary plugging problems, the effect of lime on slurry rheology has not been well understood.Slurry pipelines are designed to transport solids in suspension with a minimum of wear and without particle deposition. These two objectives are in opposition because the velocities required to maintain solid suspension can sometimes cause high head losses in the pipeline, as well as wear problems. Thus, the optimum velocity for a long distance slurry pipeline is in the range that provides just enough turbulence to keep coarse particles in suspension."

"This paper discusses the benefits of industrial minerals, their sources of supply, price and marketing trends, and their increasing use as substitute materials and ""strategic"" minerals. IntroductionKaolin finds have yet to spark the kind of frenzy associated with the 1849 California gold rush; no dolomite deposit has ever gained the notoriety of the Comstock Lode; and few industrial minerals are counted among the currently fashionable list of "" strategic mineral s"". Nevertheless, the glamorous zhine associated with metals may be somewhat superficial; further digging provides perhaps the real foundation of modern society - industrial minerals.They are often tagged as common, everyday materials that are simply dug out of the ground, crushed and hauled to a local point of consumption. Although this description is accurate in the case of road aggregates, sand and gravel, and the like, there are many exceptions to this rule. The term industrial minerals is rather nebulous, covering as it does the mundane and esoteric, the chemically active and the refractory, the $2 and the $10m-a-ton product. All of these minerals influence every facet of modern life from fertilizers to fire retardants, ceramics to cars, construction to clothes, and toothpaste to tennis courts. Their usefulness is well illustrated by the variety of industries they serve; the main ones are listed in Table 1. It is now time to dismiss the notion of non-metallics as the ""third world"" of natural resources business after the metallic and energy products by dispelling some of the myths regarding abundance, variety and value of the group's sixty-plus products."

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11-km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River, which is located within the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (e.g., Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the "Technical Feasibility" phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralization/precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru S.A., and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the treated AMD could be used for supplementing the drinking water supply of Lima and for agricultural (e.g., irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for the implementation of the full-scale treatment facility to the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

"Although the majority of new flotation column installations continue to be for cleaning or recleaning, an increasing number of flotation projects are specifying columns for roughing or scavenging duties. NICICO has recently installed flotation columns operating in rougher, cleaner and re-cleaner circuits at three new copper concentrators; Miduk, Sungun and Sarcheshmeh. Miduk is probably one of the unique operations that use flotation columns in a rougher circuit. The Miduk rougher circuit comprises five CISA parallel columns. The rougher concentrate constitutes 88% of final concentrate and reports to concentrate thickener. The rougher tailings are scavenged with ten 50 m3 mechanical cells. The scavenger concentrate is then reground and cleaned in three 3.2 m columns in parallel. The cleaner tailings are scavenged in six 50 m37mechanical cells. The cleaner tailings along with the rougher scavenger constitute final tailings.In Sarcheshmeh, the cleaner concentrate is re-cleaned in a column. The column tailings are sent back to the cleaning circuit and the concentrate is reported to the concentrate thickener.This paper reviews performance details of the flotation columns utilized in rougher circuits at Miduk and compares their metallurgical performances in an industrial scale with columns at cleaning circuits for copper flotation. Practical limitations for applying the flotation columns in rougher circuits will be discussed in details.INTRODUCTIONThe use of flotation columns has grown rapidly since the first successful commercial application at Mines Gaspe, where columns were used in a cleaning circuit to float molybdenite. Early applications of columns were restricted to replacing or adding final cleaning stages in existing circuits. Columns can achieve superior cleaning as compared to conventional cells due to their ability to support a large froth depth and the use of water for washing froth. Wash water travels down through the froth and crosses the pulp/froth interface, replaces the entrained particles reporting to the froth from pulp and improve the concentrate grade."

"This research work forms part of an assessment to complement the feasibility of implementing high pressure sonic injection into relatively small (2.25 m I.D by 3.66 m I.L) Peirce-Smith converters (PSC) used at Lonmin Plc. Work has been carried out to characterize the fluid dynamics of three-phase (air, matte and slag) fluid flow in these converters using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The investigation has been done to study the flow pattern of the three phase system at high air pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit into the converter. The 2-D and 3-D simulations of the three phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k -e turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow, respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial CFD numerical code FLUENT. A detailed study of the flow pattern has been presented in the form of contour plots and the results obtained are useful for understanding plume extension and velocity distribution, shear wall stress distribution, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. The results provide a basis for further development of sonic injection technology into relatively small industrial Peirce-Smith converters with the ultimate objective of achieving lower energy consumption, improved process efficiency and increased throughput of the converting process. INTRODUCTIONPeirce-Smith converters (PSC) have been used in copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) making smelters for more than a century for the purpose of removing iron (Fe) and sulphur (S) chemically associated with copper-nickel mattes through exothermic oxidation reactions. This process is commonly referred to as conversion. In principle, conversion is a submerged injection process, where typically air (or oxygen enriched air), at subsonic velocity (typically < 150 m/s), is laterally blown into liquid matte (Cu-Ni-Fe-S system). Oxygen preferentially reacts with Fe and S to produce iron oxide (FeO), which is slagged off, and sulphur dioxide (SO2), which reports to the process off gas."

"IntroductionAt TransAlta Utilities Corporation&apos;s Highvale Mine, located west of Edmonton, Alberta (Fig. I and 2), dragline stripping has proved to be a practical and economical method of overburden removal and future plans have been based upon the continued use of draglines (Fig. 3) as the major stripping equipment (Williams, 1979, Nikols et al., 1986). However, long range planning has shown that the capacity of draglines alone will be exceeded in the early 1990s as mining progresses into deeper overburden cover (Tapics, 1983). Strip ratios will increase from I.3 bank m!/ t of coal in 1985to 4.5 bank m3 / t in 1995. During this period the depth of overburden will increase substantially and the areas to be mined will be characterized by weak soils including glacially displaced overburden. This increased overburden depth in relatively weak soils will make it impractical to _continue side casting by draglines without prestripping in advance. In 1983, a major investigation was initiated to determine what additional overburden removal equipment was appropriate to the Highvale operations, and recognizing the long delivery times of this major equipment. when it would be required. This paper describes studies and tests which were undertaken in 1983 and 1984 to select prestripping methods and equipment for the future operation of the mine.Previous planning studies have shown that with the current burn schedule and with the economies of progressing from low cover to high cover, as has been practiced in the past, overburden volumes will exceed the capacity of the existing draglines in the early 1990s (Fig. 4). These previous studies had placed reliance on (I tandem dragline operation for future overburden removal requirements up to a depth of 45 m throughout the Highvale Mine. New drilling together with the associated geotechnical studies and some detailed planning on the practicality of using tandem draglines, created concerns about their universal application. Even without considering geotechnical conditions there was a depth limitation to tandem dragJines and substantial prestripping would be required to achieve the ultimate depths."

"The Great Dyke extends for 540 krn along strike, to unknown depth, and varies in width from 3 krn to 11 krn. Rb/Sr age determinations gives values of approximately 2470 Ma.The Dyke consists of a variety of mafic and ultramafic rocks, many altered to serpentinites. These include, from top to bottom, successions of gabbro/norites, pyroxenites, peridotiteslharzburgites, and dunites/picrites.The layers dip in from either margin, steepest at the edges (20°) and flattening toward the central sections. Four separate complexes are present. From north to south these are termed the Musengezi, Hartley, Selukwe and Wedza Complexes, and are described as &apos;boat-shaped&apos; or &apos;pig-troughed&apos;. All are similar in petrological sequences. Physiographically, the Dyke is spectacular in the north, where as a mountain range it meets the Zarnbezi Escarpment. Elsewhere in the central parts there is little surface expression and wide open treeless vleis. Dyke rocks cut through granite and schist belt terrain and are termed &apos;The Magnesia Belt&apos;.Vast mineral resources exist. These include chrome, asbestos, platinoids, nickel, copper and gold. Up to eleven chrome seams numbered from top to bottom occur in the lower ultramafic sequences. Seams are narrow at 10 em to 30 em but of high grade. The platinum occurs 10 m to 40 m below the norite/pyroxenite contact.A 60 m wide zone of Light Sulfide Mineralization (LSM) of less than 1070 sulfides extends from the lower gabbronorites into the upper pyroxenites. In this LSM, four enriched zones carry up to 5% sulfides. The most widespread is termed the Main Sulfide Zone (MSZ), below which is No. 2, No.3 and No.4 Sulfide Zones. The MSZ carrying pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is a multielement ore with components of PGE (pt-Pd-Rh), nickel, copper and cobalt, and gold and silver.Extensive exploration programs have been carried out and the intention is to begin large-scale mining. However, with Russia supplying metals to the western markets, South Africa&apos;s cutback on production, and an end to the Cold War, delays have arisen."
