"RESUMELe gisement d 'uranium de Cigar Lake, dans la région de l'Athabasca au nord du Saskatchewan, fut découvert en mai 1981 par Cogema Canada Ltée, opérant pour Ie compte de la ""Waterbury Lake Joint Venture"".Le corps minéralisé. qui est dépourvu de toute expression directe en surface, est situé a la discordance entre les met sédiments du wottaston Group (Protérozoïque inférieur ou Aphébien) et les grès de l 'Athabasca (Protérozoïque moyen ou Hélikien), à une profondeur de 410 a450 m.Fin 1984, Ie gisement était reconnu par 105 sondages minéralisés repartis sur une longueur de 1800 m, pour une largeur comprise entre 25 et 105 m. 11 se présente sous forme d’une lentille aplatie de 5 a30 m de puissance, et montre une remarquable continuité d'ensemble. Une ride ou bombement topographique de la discordance est associée au gisement surtoute sa longueur.A l'échelle régionale, le corps minéralisé à est associe à un corridor structural d’orientation est-ouest, a l'intérieur duquel des facies particuliers aténdance blast mylonitique sont développes dans les formations métapolitiques agraphite du socle métamorphique. Il est entouré par un halo d'altération très important, caractériser Ie développement de minéraux argileux alumino-magnesiens (illite-chlorite).La minéralisation est située, pour la plus grande part, dans les grès d'Athabasca, et se compose essentiellement d'uraninite et de sulfo-arseniures de nickel et de cobalt,De nombreux levés géochimiques et géophysiques ont été effectues dans la région de Cigar Lake. The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sands tone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surf ace.AI the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25 m and 105 m. It has the shape of a flat-lying lens 5 m to 30 m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and latera continuity from the information obtained to date. A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-A I rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite).The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfo-arsenides of nickel and cobalt.Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, although there may be locally a good coincidence. Numerical simulations of the physicochemical processes related to acid rock drainage (ARD) in the Sugar Shack South rock pile of the Questa Mine were performed with the TOUGH AMD simulator. The objectives were to 1) identify the main processes responsible for observed present-day conditions, 2) provide an estimate of gas phase humidity transfer, and 3) give a preliminary indication of the potential impact of closure involving the installation of an alluvial soil cover. Modeling results indicated that the mine rock geometry (thin layers placed along steep mountain slopes) favors the onset of strong thermal air convection. Simulations also indicate that resloping the piles would not significantly reduce convection and oxidation. For simulation purposes, a potential cover with the permeability range of a local alluvium was investigated and found to be of questionable effectiveness since its permeability can exceed the value of 3x10-13 m2 required to prevent thermal air convection and reduce ARD.

The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

The authors discuss the application of drum and friction hoists under modern conditions and give four examples of friction hoists proposed for various applications. The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and limitations of friction hoists relative to drum hoists. Introduction T H~ introduction of the multiple-rope friction hoist m the late 1940's has complicated the se-lection of the right hoist for a given job. Once such considerations as rope safety factor, drum to rope ratio, hoisting distance, tons per hour and/or service duty have been decided upon, the selection of a drum hoist is relatively simple. We now ask our-selves "which hoist -drum or friction? (See Figure 1 and Figure 2). When a friction hoist is a possibility we are immediately concerned with how many ropes to use, whether to hoist balanced or counter-balanced, whether a friction hoist will be flexible enough for the application and, of course, what the relative costs will be.

A two level factorial study was undertaken to investigate the relative impacts of factors affecting the kinetics of polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, assisted pressure oxidation of chalcopyrite. A copper flotation concentrate, principally composed of chalcopyrite, was leached in 850 mL of leach solution under conditions similar to those of the CESL process. The factors manipulated were: the amount of 1/8" PTFE beads added (100 g or 650 g), oxygen pressure (690 kPa or 1030 kPa), and concentrate addition (10 grams or 65 grams). Copper extraction data, which indicated complete leaching under certain conditions, were fit using a shrinking core model from which rate constants were estimated and further used to generate a statistical model containing only the factors of significance and their interactions. Results indicated a strong positive effect of PTFE addition and a strong negative effect of increasing pulp density. A weak negative interaction between increasing PTFE addition and pulp density was attributed to PTFE/concentrate agglomeration.

The Big Whopper, one of only four giant economic rare metal pegmatites worldwide, is set to become a producer of the highly valued lithium mineral petalite (LiAlSi4O10) used in glass, ceramics and the specialty glass-ceramics familiar as Corningware® and the new ceramic stovetops. The deposit has a strike length of 1.5 km, a width of up to 80 m and a resource, open in all directions, of 11.6 Mt, grading 25% petalite. It is amenable to open pit mining and Avalon Ventures Ltd. holds a patent on a flotation process that produces an exceptional quality petalite product. The project will also produce: superb quality Na-feldspar which, too, finds use in glass and ceramics; the unusual Rb- K-feldspar for high voltage porcelain insulators; tantalum, in high demand for electronics; lepidolite, an ore of rubidium; and mica and tin. A positive prefeasibility study has been completed and it remains only to undertake bulk sampling and a full feasibility study.

Gypsum is mined in all Atlantic Provinces except Prince Edward Island. It is generally thought to have been derived from the hydration of anhydrite in areas of minimal drainage. Late Devonian downwarping and crustal oscillation east of the Appalachian fold belt allowed the Windsor Sea to advance and retreat in a depositional trough and deposit about 1,000 m of sediments in Mississippian time, much of which were evaporites. The best areas for further gypsum development are lowland basins such as the Cape Breton Lowlands, the Hillsborough area of New Brunswick and the St. George's Lowlands in Newfoundland, all of which are already sites of gypsum quarries. Nova Scotia's gypsum is mined from the Lower Windsor Group, which is divided into subzones 'A' and 'B'; 'B' provides most of the province's gypsum production. The Atlantic Provinces gypsum industry has markets from the St. Lawrence waterway to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

"Solids concentration (weight % solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mud-line) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge's Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and a jarosite thickener in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 23 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by a sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles using a model due to Maxwell.The results from conductivity measurements were compared with direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line informnation could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners."

As usually occurs in technological development, heap leaching knowledge has been built upon two parallel lanes, theory developed on fundamentals but relatively far from industrial applications, and operational know-how generated from empirical trial and error. As a contribution to close the gap between the above-mentioned lanes, the De Re Metallica process consulting group has been developing and applying fundamentalsbased modeling tools for industrial process design and process optimization of existing plants over the last ten years. As result, a library of models is now available with application to the whole production chain from blasting to electro winning. The paper describes and discusses the use of stainless steels for leaching plants emphasising the duplex family, i.e., austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. This group has generally twice the proof strength of the more common 300-series austenitic grades, which implies possibilities to reduce the gauge at construction of pressure vessels and atmospheric tanks and vessels and thereby possibilities to reduce the weight. The duplex grades have also higher surface hardness resulting in better resistance to mechanical wear, i.e., abrasion and erosion corrosion. The lower contents of nickel and molybdenum imply lower cost and a more stable price considering the present market situation for these alloying elements. Short term electrodeposition experiments (up to 80 min.) at two current densities 220 and 275 A/m2 with varying concentrations of thiourea and glue were performed to determine the optimum levels of glue, thiourea and current density for industrial copper electrorefining. White Light Interference Microscopy was used to acquire digital images of the morphology of the electrodeposited copper. Scaling analysis was employed to pa-rameterize the morphological information encoded in the images. The limiting rough¬ness, *, the critical scaling length, Lc, and the aspect ratio, 4*/ Lc, were determined as a function of the deposition time and the amount of organic additives. These parameters were used to calculate the dynamic exponent, B, the roughness exponent, 1/z, and the as¬pect ratio exponent, y, plotted as a function of glue and thiourea concentrations. These 3D plots allowed us to find conditions corresponding to the minimum of B and y, at which the deposited copper is characterized by a small roughness and a dense structure.

"Data from two industrial plants are treated by mass balance package BILMAT. The first application concerned a base metals/precious metals (PM) producer and the second, implementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in the granite industry. Also LOTUS 123 software can easily be adapted for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC computer. INTRODUCTIONThe present paper deals with two different BILMAT program applications. The first application concerns a copper-zinc-gol d-sil Yer producer based in North-western Quebec and the second, concerns the iriplementation of a hydrocyclone for the recovery of iron chips in Quebec granite company.Afterwards, we deal with some LOTUS 123 software applications for laboratory test mass balances using an IBM-PC.1. Base metal and P.M. producerNoranda Inc, Mattagami division, which operates mines in North Western Quebec, produces copper and zinc concentrates from a sulphide ore. Small amounts of gold (0,34 g/t) and silver (20 g/tl are present. At the time of the study, only 30% of the silver content was recovered in the copper concentrate. The main objective of this study is, to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver in the flotation circuits, to increase its recovery in the copper concentrate and therefore to improve its final economic value. It is then worthwhile to identify the silver bearing minerals and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost. The methodology proposed is based on the coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance ca1cu1ation in the flotation circuit performed using the BILMAT mass balance package (1, 2, 3).The results are discussed with respect to the distribution of silver in the circuit. The recoveries obtained at the various separation stages for the minerals present in the ore are also discussed."

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

This paper describes the leaching of the common copper minerals tennantite (Cu12As4S13), tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) in acidic media using Fe(SO4)1.5, FeC13 or 02 as oxidizing agents. At temperatures <100°C, tennantite dissolves slowly in Fe(SO4)1.5-H2SO4 media, and the rate is directly proportional to the area of the sized tennantite. The rate increases sharply with increasing temperature and the apparent activation energy is 69 kJ/mol. Increasing Fe(SO4)1.5 concentrations slightly increase the tennantite leaching rate. The kinetics of dissolution of disks of synthetic iron-bearing tetrahedrite in Fe(SO4)1.5-H2SO4 media are linear; the leaching rates are slow but increase significantly with increasing temperature, with an apparent activation energy of 120 kJ/mol. The dissolution of sized particles of natural Ag-bearing tetrahedrite in FeC13- HC1 solutions proceeds according to the shrinking core model, and both Cu and Ag dissolve at about the same rate, provided that the total chloride concentration of the solution is sufficiently high to solubilize the AgC1 reaction product. The leaching rates are slow, and the apparent activation energy is 116 kJ/mol. The addition of sulphate ions to the FeC13-HC1 system reduces the tetrahedrite leaching rate to values similar to those realized in the Fe(SO4)1.5-H2SO4 system. At <100°C, enargite dissolves slowly in either Fe(SO4)1.5 or FeC13 media, and the dissolution rate obeys the shrinking core model. The rate increases with increasing temperature and the apparent activation energies are 50-64 kJ/mol. The rate increases slightly with increasing FeC13 concentrations in 0.3 M HC1 media. The leaching of enargite at elevated temperatures and pressures was also investigated. Potentially useful leaching rates are achieved above 170°C, at which temperature sulphate, rather than sulphur, is produced. Lower temperatures (130-160°C) lead to fast initial leaching rates, but the dissolution of the enargite is incomplete because of the coating of the enargite particles by elemental sulphur.

"In 2000-2009, Highland Valley Copper (HVC) tested new generation 660 mm cyclones supplied by various manufacturers in an aim to replace existing first generation 762 mm cyclones without success. Due to plant infrastructure limitations, new generation larger (838 and 800 mm) cyclones were not feasible. In 2010, an approach of testing hybrid 800 mm diameter cyclones was initiated by HVC. The hybrid cyclone consists of an 800 mm cyclone upper head section and the use of existing 762 mm cyclone conical sections. Three hybrid 800 mm cyclones were engineered and fabricated, targeting a throughput of 850-950 mtph and were installed in the E line cyclone cluster. Since starting operation on September 20, 2011, three hybrid 800 mm cyclones have been running at combined throughput ranges of 750 to 1050 mtph. Based on plant Daily Met Reports, the test hybrid cyclones demonstrated a decrease in misplacement of coarse copper bearing material to the cyclone overflow and better cyclone efficiency when compared to the existing 762 mm cyclones at the same throughput. The hybrid 800 mm cyclones also demonstrated significantly higher capacity per unit when compared to the existing cyclones. Based on the improvement demonstrated in the full plant trials, HVC decided to install the new hybrid 800 mm cyclones in all five grinding lines starting in July, 2012. A more detailed discussion of the full plant trials and initial results of the first complete retrofit of E line will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHighland Valley Copper Partnership (HVC) is Canada’s largest base metals mine and one of the world’s largest producers of Cu-in-concentrate. The mine, located in the central interior of British Columbia, is owned (97.5% interest) and operated by Teck Resources Ltd. In 2011, HVC produced about 210 million lbs. of Cu and 8 million lbs. of Mo. HVC’s Mill Modernization Project (MOP), which was budgeted for $475 M, is currently under intensive construction and is scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2014. The following description was valid at the time of writing this paper.The operation has been expanded a number of times since the startup of the original Lornex mill in 1972. The plant started up with two 9.75 m (32 foot) diameter primary SAG mills. It was expanded in 1981 with the addition of a 10.36 m (34 foot) diameter SAG mill. In 1988, the Highmont concentrator grinding mills and flotation section were moved and attached to the Lornex mill site. This added two10.36 m (34 foot) diameter AG primary mills to the Highland mill. This brought the total number of primary mills to five referred to as Line A, B, C, D and E: three SAG mills (A, B and C) each with two ball mills in parallel and two AG mills (D and E) each with one ball mill. Each AG mill line is equipped with one short head pebble crusher. Ball mill circuits are classified using 8 clusters of ten Linatex 762 mm cyclones to reach a target P80 330 micron (equivalent 43% +100 mesh), before the cyclone overflow product advances to the bulk flotation circuit."

"PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."
