The effect of leach promoting reagent LPF on the leaching process of a weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore has been investigated and the mechanism is discussed. The result shows that the leach promoting reagent LPF can enhance the leaching extraction of rare earth ore effectively. With the addition of LPF to the lixiviant at a concentration of 0.1%, the leaching extraction increased by more than 8%, the ammonium sulfate concentration could be decreased by 25%, and the leaching liquid/solid ratio reduced by 34%. The mechanism analysis shows that LPF can react with rare earth ions and form soluble coordination compounds, thus reducing the activity of the leached rare earth ions, increasing the concentration difference for ion diffusion, and promoting the rare earth leaching process. These results will hopefully help point to a new approach to making the leaching process of low-grade weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore more efficient and with lower lixiviant consumption.

A7075 aluminum alloys have high strengths but poor corrosion resistance. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, a clad sheet is suggested, that is the A7075 alloy sheet bonded to A1XXX or A6XXX aluminum alloy sheets which are surface layers with good corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties of the clad sheets are determined by the combination of the component layer sheets, and thermomechanical treatment should be precisely designed when the strengthening methods of the core and the surface alloys are quite different. In the present study, three-layered A6022/A7075/A6022 clad sheets were fabricated by roll bonding process. Simplified processes incorporating a twin roll casting were also suggested in order to reduce the processing cost. Several temper methods composed of rolling, annealing, solution treatment, and aging were suggested in order to optimize the mechanical properties of the sheets. The strengths of the clad sheets were compared with the bare A7075 and bare A6022 sheets.

The carbon anodes used in the electrolytic production of aluminum are made of petroleum coke, recycled anodes and butts, and coal tar pitch. Due to technological advances in the aluminum production technology, aimed at increasing production and decreasing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, better quality anodes are required. Presently, the anode quality is evaluated by visual inspection and the analysis of a small core taken from 1.5-2% of the anodes produced. The visual inspection is susceptible to human error and limited to surface imperfections. The analysis of cores takes time, and therefore, it is difficult to determine the existence of a problem and intervene at the right time. In addition, the core does not represent the whole anode due to the non-homogeneity of anodes. A validated online anode quality control system can highly improve the situation. In this article, an electrical resistivity measurement method developed for this purpose is presented.

The metallurgical treatment of Falconbridge ore re-quires an extremely fine grind of the pyrrhotite portion ? for maximum liberation and recovery of nickel. This paper describes the operation of a grate discharge pebble mill in closed circuit with cyclones regrinding 25 to 30 tons per hour of sulphides to approximately 90 per cent minus 325 mesh. The consumption of the screened ore grinding medium is of the order of 2.5 pounds per kw.-hour, or less than 1 per cent of the tonnage of re-ground sulphides. IN RECENT years, there has been a considerable interest in pebble grinding in the uranium industry, and a number of installations have appeared. However, the use of sulphide ore pebbles as a grinding medium has so far been relatively limited. "OVER half a million tons of chromite ore is used annually on the North American continent, all of which is imported from overseas. Chromite is essential in the manufacture of stainless steel, armour plate, and tool steel, to mention only three important uses. It is, therefore, a strategic mineral, and every effort should be made to discover a means of utilizing our domestic supplies.Both Canada and the United States possess deposits of chromite, but they are low grade with respect both to their chromium content and to the ratio of chromium to iron. Mechanical concentration can improve the chromium content •by rejecting gangue, but chromium concentrate produced is still lower in chromium than imported chromite and, more important, the ratio of chromium to iron is only about half that in the imported material. At present, a chromium to iron ratio •of 3:1 is desired by industry. To obtain this .ratio in the case of domestic ores, a chemical attack on the chromi'e is necessary."

The development of contact angles on highly polished ?uraninite surfaces, using sodium oleate and dodecyl ammonium acetate as collectors, has been studied at different collector and hydrogen ion concentrations. It was found that sodium oleate in acidic media (up to a neutral: PH) and dodecyl ammonium acetate in neutral and alkaline media give good contact angles. It appears that the combined forms of these collectors, viz., oleic acid and free amine, are more important in effecting contact. W ITH the emergence of uranium as a strategic metal in the last fifteen years, considerable effort has been directed toward the commercial recovery of uranium from its ores. This has resulted in the development of a uranium technology. It is only in recent years, However, that fundamental data regarding the floatability and surface properties of uraninite and ?pitchblende have been elucidated by different methods. The limestone reef reservoir at Swan Hills consists essentially of a "buildup" of successively smaller atoll-like layers. Precipitation of calcium carbonate within the lagoonal area of each layer essentially kept pace with growth of the outer organic lattice. Within the reef mass, six de-positional environments characterized by specific suites of fossils (or fossil fragments) and associated limestone textures are recognized as follows: ( 1) Aerated moderately agitated water of normal marine salinity (widespread shelf or submerged reef-built platform). Thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, "pancake" stroma-toporoids, crinoids, articulate bra-chiopods, rare rugose cup corals, and ostracods occurs in light gray-buff skeletal microgranular limestone of low permeability. (2) Semi-stagnant quiet water of normal marine salinity (leeward side of reef). Crinoids, articulate brachio-pods, rare thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, pancake and bulbous stromatoporoids, rugose cup corals, ostracods and gastropods occur in impermeable dark brown argillaceous skeletal calcilutite with thin black bituminous shale beds and rare dark chert nodules.

This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

As Canadian mines progress to greater depths, magnitudes of induced stresses increase, becoming high enough to cause rock mass damage and failure during excavation. In addition, depending on the orientation of key geological structures in relation to the in-situ stresses, induced shear loading can be developed on these structures, creating the potential for: a) remobilization of existing geological structures, b) formation of new seismically active structural zones, created through rock mass damage and coalescence along such structural zones, and/or c) interaction between existing and newly created structures. Numerical analyses were carried out to investigate four possible factors that might cause fault slip on controlling structures, namely: (a) unclamping, (b) day-lighting, (c) stress rotation and (d) pillar shear. Application to an underground mine in the Sudbury Basin allowed verification of these factors and the proposal of two alternative mine planning methods to limit fault slip on key structures: (1) pillar clamping and (2) stope sequencing.

Two papers recently published on the subject of mine ventilation: "The Theory of Ventilation," by Douglas Hay. and "The True Effect of Natural Ventilation in Deep Mines," by Robert Clive, form the first and second reports respectively of the committee on the Ventilation of Mines appointed by the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers. The purpose of the present paper is to draw attention to these two papers and the discussion thereon. The theory of ventilation as taught in our schools is based on Atkinson's formula, which is a variation of Chezy's formula for the flow of water in pipes. The formula depends on two assumptions : 1. That air is an incompressible fluid within the limits ordinarily encountered, and; 2. That the pressure required to produce ventilation varies as the square of the rate of flow. The Atkinson formula has been assumed to hold good over the entire range of conditions met with in mines.

Metallographic techniques developed from studies of corrosion films and electroplated coatings on aluminum alloys, are discussed. These methods, the result of work at the Naval Research Establishment, give extremely flat fields at the interface despite the large difference in hardness, in cases where electrolytic polishing could not be used. Techniques to overcome the similarity in refractive index of immersion oil, aluminum ox1d~, and mounting plastic are also considered, as are methods for improving visual and photographic contrast in areas of interest. A device for marking specimens is also de-scribed. ELE•CTROLYTIC polishing is inapplicable in the study of surface films on aluminum, whether corrosion films or electrodeposits. Mechanical procedures must there-fore be followed. Sample flatness and edge retention are of paramount importance. Special measures are required in the study of oxide films, because of the close proximity of the refractive indices of aluminum oxide, mounting plastic, and immersion oil.

Laronde Mine has been working for a number of years to identify substances that could contribute to process water toxicity and to find an effective way of removing these contaminants from the water. Initial studies have identified ammonia, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, dissolved organic carbon, copper and zinc as potential toxicants. Bench-scale tests were carried out with Lakefield Research to find a water treatment process that could effectively remove the suspected toxicants. Nine treatment processes were evaluated: 1) granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration followed by zeolite, 2) zeolite filtration followed by GAC filtration, 3) aeration followed by GAC filtration, 4) multi-stage GAC filtration, 5) chlorination followed by dechlorination, 6) addition of clay based polymer, 7) treatment with peroxide and ultra-violet light, 8) bulk addition of GAC and zeolite powder, 9) treatment with bacteria. This article presents a summary of the test results and of the problems associated with the evaluation of technologies for the treatment of toxicity.

THE development of Reserve Mining Company's pelletizing practices began in 1949 in a pilot plant located at Ashland, Kentucky. Three years later the participating companies -Armco Steel Corporation, Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company and Republic Steel Corporation concluded the work and the small plant was shut down. Oglebay Norton and Company was the operating manager and Armco Steel Corporation furnished labor and services. Arthur G. McKee and Company were the designers and constructors. The equipment flow sheet that was employed in that pilot operation is shown in Figure 1. This was Reserve's first step from the laboratory work per-formed by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota in developing a commercial operation. The plant used New York state concentrate, purchased from Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation's Benson Mine. IN 1952, prompted by the great demand of the Canadian drilling and foundry industries for sodium bentonite, the Geological Department of Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, Limited began an extensive search for bentonite deposits throughout western Canada. Their efforts were rewarded in 1958, when substantial deposits of high quality material were found approximately 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The bentonite material, a part of the Edmonton formation in the Upper Cretaceous, is located approximately nine miles south of the town of Rosalind. The land where the bentonite lies has in places .been eroded by stream and glacial action to form a wide gully, convenient for strip mining methods (see Figure 1). The bentonite bed is almost flat-lying, dipping to the southwest at approximately 12 feet per mile. The main bed is 8 to. 10 feet thick and is covered with 15 to 25 feet of overburden. Before stripping, the area is drilled and sampled to evaluate the quantity and quality of the bentonite.

The area in Quebec immediately north of the Ottawa river is underlain by a large area of granite gneiss intruded in lit-par-lit fashion into Grenville sediments and low silica intrusives of the Buckingham Series. This complex of metamorphic rocks is intruded by a much later magma found, chiefly, as a very large stock about 20 miles in diameter and extending from Brownsburg to Grenville, and as dykes and small outliers at various places adjacent to its outer margin. 1A similar stock at Rigaud, Quebec, is situated south of the Ottawa river and has been described by O. E. Le Roy. The earliest representatives of the later magma are a series of granodiorite dykes characterized by abundant hornblende, along with primary magnetite and subordinate sulphides scattered as roundish grains through anorthoclase and aligoclase feldspars and subordinate quartz. The rock is found as narrow dykes and shows no prominent secondary structures, either in the field or in thin sections under the microscope.

Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

THE following is a brief description of the method of hoisting ore automatically at the No. 14 shaft of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, Schumacher, Ontario. All ore and waste below the 3875-ft. level is hoisted up No. 14 shaft from the 7000-ft. level to the 3000-ft. level. Seventy to seventy-five per cent of the mining is done in this area. The shaft consists of four compartments: a man way, a ventilation compartment and two skip compartments. The hoist, located on the 3500-ft. level (see Figure l), is an 80-in.-diameter, 4-rope friction winder, utilizing two 6-ton front-dump skips in balance. The hoist is powered by a 1,100-h.p. A.C. motor, the maxi-mum speed being 2,400 ft. per minute. The operation can be either manual, push-button automatic from the pocket, or fully automatic. Men can be raised or lowered in the skips, using a collapsible aluminum platform placed inside the skip box.

Black Thor chromite ore from the Ring of Fire deposit in Northern Ontario was carbothermically reduced in a microwave system to produce a ferrochromium alloy. The as-received ore contained 43.0% Cr2O3, 19.9% Fe2O3, 14.5% MgO, 13.4% Al2O3, and 7.0% SiO2. Activated charcoal was utilized as the reducing agent. Firstly, TGA/DTA and permittivity studies were carried out in order to determine the relationship between the reduction process and the microwave susceptibility. Secondly, microwave reduction experiments were performed on the chromite ore. The variables investigated were; the amount of carbon, processing time, input power and type of atmosphere. A maximum chromium grade of 76.1% and a chromium metallization of 82.7% were obtained for a processing time of 20 minutes, a power input of 800 W, and a carbon addition of 15% in an argon atmosphere.

"The Langmuir Mine is located seventeen miles south-east of South Porcupine in Langmuir Township.The property was developed as a Joint Venture between Noranda Mines Limited and the International Nickel Company of Canada with Noranda responsible for the operation of the property.The Mine came into production in June 1973 at a rate of 700 tons per day of nickel ore.MINING The mining method selected for the Langmuir Project was a sub-level retreat method. This consisted of driving sub-levels longitudinally in the ore body at 35 foot, intervals with the sub-levels being connected by a ramp from each main level for the use of trackless mining equipment.GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE LANGMUIR MINE The deposit is situated about 1,000 feet west of the shore of Carmen Bay at the south of Nighthawk Lake in Langmuir Township. The area is underlain by andesite and rhyolite flows with iron formations which are intruded by gabbro, diorite, peridotite and late precambrian diabase dikes."

There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.
