The iron ore mining district of Labrador West and adjacent Quebec is Canada's largest iron ore producer with almost 50 years of production. The area is currently experiencing a period of renewed activity not seen in decades that includes new mine development, mine expansion and exploration for new iron ore resources. All of the past and present production and exploration programs in the district are centred on the Lower Proterozoic Superior-type iron formations of the Knob Lake Group, located within the Grenville tectonic province of the Canadian Shield. The Knob Lake Group is a continental margin sedimentary sequence which was deformed and subjected to greenschist to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism during the Grenville orogeny. Regional deformation and metamorphism plays a key role in making the iron formation of the Knob Lake Group economic. The distribution of orebodies in the district is controlled by superimposed F1/F2 synclines which causes thickening of the iron formation through repetition. Ore mineralogy consists of specular haematite, magnetite and locally martite with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Regional metamorphism has caused an increase in grain size of the ore minerals making it more amenable to concentrating and pelletising. Altius has been active in Labrador West since 2003 and is now the second largest licence holder in the district with several iron ore exploration projects. The Kamistiatusset project is located in the heart of the region's transportation, power and mining infrastructure. The property has seen limited previous exploration, but covers several significant iron ore prospects. Work by Altius includes a helicopter-borne magnetic survey, ground magnetic and gravity surveys, geological mapping, sampling and 6000 m of diamond core drilling all of which confirm both a favourable geologic setting and ore mineralogy.

The Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s long-planned Western Ring Route, a 48 km north-south motorway alternative to State Highway 1 that bypasses the central city to the west. The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway – half of it underground in tunnels – to connect the Southwestern (State Highway 20) and Northwestern (State Highway 16) motorways.The Western Ring Route will link the major population and industrial centres of Manukau, Auckland and North Shore to give the region the connected and resilient strategic road transport system it needs to underpin economic growth and sustainable development. It will also provide a direct motorway link between Auckland’s central business district (CBD) and international airport.The project involves construction of twin 2.4 km driven tunnels with an outside diameter of 14.41 m beneath residential suburbs, a major arterial road and a rail corridor. Enabling works began in January 2012 while tunnel construction using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) began in November 2013.This presentation introduces the Waterview Connection project, its role in the development of the Auckland motorway network, its procurement process, the alliance delivery model and an overview of the project’s design features and construction progress to date.Design and construction highlights of the presentation include the TBM start-up, turnaround and breakthrough arrangements as well as the experience gained during the first tunnelling drive. Existing practical laboratory tests for comparative strength determination of commercial explosives consist of the lead block test, the ballistic mortar test, the bubble test etc. These tests are carried out in material with quite different properties compared to rock. The theoretical performance potentials of commercial explosives are traditionally described by weight-strength (WS). Some explosive producers use the Langefors formula for weight-strength calculation, where also the gas volume is considered. Neither the theoretical nor the practical methods for determination of explosive performance such as the above, give good enough prediction of fragmentation and heave in rock blasting. For these reasons a project was started for the purpose of finding a small scale test method which predicts how different explosive parameters affect fragmentation and heave. Small scale tests were carried out by using 50 cm cubical blocks, mainly of concrete, but a few also of rock. All blocks were blasted in a steel cylinder with a diameter of 1.2 meters. The velocity of detonation was monitored, and the velocity of fragments was derived from their time of arrival at the steel wall, which was registered by accelerometers. After blasting all fragments were screened. The charge diameter was 22 mm and the amount of explosive 78 grammes, resulting in a specific charge of 0.62 kg/m3. Explosive properties such as energy, gas, VOD and density were systematically changed.The results presented in this paper show how fragmentation and heave systematically change when the explosive properties like energy, gas, VOD and density are systematically changed. The results from the small scale tests are compared to full scale tests carried out in tunnel blasting, and during summer 1990 also in bench blasting.

The use of geological data for optimisation of operating plants has become a significant part of the modern process mindset. The underlying principle is to convert spatial geological data into metallurgical information to drive production and mine planning, blast design, blending strategies and plant set-up. Increasingly the process designer is required to interface with geological and mining staff to propose the best investment strategy for a project’s benefit.The geometallurgical model development for the Zafranal copper-gold project commenced in March, 2010, several months after the start of a major drilling campaign by AQM Copper Inc. The initial evaluation stage required review of historical Teck RC data to determine areas of metallurgical interest within the project. As drilling transitioned from RC to diamond drilling, core that was considered representative of the resource was selected and subjected to MLA mineralogy analysis. When coupled with sequential copper analyses this allowed calibration of an assay derived mineralogy model, allowing process concept options and a preliminary test program to be developed. This Phase 1 test program provided a preliminary process design, operating costs and anticipated concentrate grades and recoveries. Both this data and resource estimation were used to generate a preliminary Whittle pit optimisation based on maximising net smelter return, which in turn fed into a preliminary mine plan. The preliminary mine plan, in conjunction with geological logs and core results was used to develop a phase 2 metallurgical test program, where variability tests were conducted throughout the resource and composites formed to investigate specific years of the mine plan in locked cycle flotation. In addition comminution tests were modelled against geometallurgical domains allowing comminution components values to be calculated for 36?000 m of core. A flotation geometallurgical model was developed and incorporated into the resource model allowing concentrate grades and recoveries to be estimated on a block-by-block basis.

Recent tailings dam failures have heightened public awareness of the hazard posed by storage facilities for mining waste, illustrating the need for a more critical examination of tailings dam breach mechanisms and the potential mobility of liquefied tailings. Knowledge from tailings dam breach studies will help improve safety and risk management through more accurate inundation maps, dam consequence classifications and emergency preparedness plans. Tailings dams differ from conventional water retaining dams, although dam breach relationships used in practice rely heavily on relationships derived for breach processes from the latter. Physical modelling offers a controlled environment to advance the understanding of tailings dam breach processes, thereby allowing for modelling of simple geometry and boundary conditions to test hypotheses. The performed experiments investigate prototypical tailings dam configurations and material behaviour, with the objective of validating numerical models that will enable practitioners to better assess and mitigate tailings flows resulting from tailings dam failures. Research conducted in the Queen’s University Landslide Flume at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory has investigated the breaching of 1 m high dams with tailings geometry by overtopping initiated by a v-notch incised in the dam crest. This paper presents the initial results of the next stage of this research comparing the outflow hydrograph following loss of containment caused by shear failure to overtopping initiated by notch flow. The two dam experiments presented are constructed with similar dam and reservoir geometries allowing for a direct comparison of the effect on the outflow hydrograph of each failure event. Preliminary outcomes suggest that although both dam failure events are triggered from separate mechanisms their geometries allow for similar values of Q_peak to be reached. Future work is currently planned to expand the shear test series to explore the influence of failure mechanism on the outflow hydrograph.

Achieving occupational health and environmental noise objectives is a major consideration in the planning or operational phase of resource development and industrial projects to meet the needs of the workforce and community and comply with legislative requirements. For material handling systems, ventilation plants, mobile equipment, process plants and fixed infrastructure, noise emissions need to be considered at the design phase. The preferred approach is to provide noise emission technical specifications, but in many cases this is not stipulated. An occupational noise requirement, such as ‘not to exceed 85 dBA at 1 m’, is often provided, but this will not achieve the required occupational or environmental noise objectives and may cause overly stringent requirements when they may not be needed. It should be noted that when developing the technical specification, measuring compliance needs to be taken into account as, in some cases, measuring may be very difficult or even not possible.This paper will discuss the requirements for providing an effective noise specification that ensures the environmental and occupational noise objectives are able to be achieved and that, once installed, compliance can be measured. It discusses planning such as when to set the objective, correlating the appropriate objectives for the environmental and occupational noise requirements, allowing for measurement tolerance, providing a suitable criteria and data format for the suppliers to respond to and methodology to measure compliance. Different phases of a project require different approaches to planning for noise management and these will be discussed in the paper. This paper discusses the challenges, solutions and lessons learnt as tunnelling work continues on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) project.The MMSR project is a $220 million dollar project for the Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of approximately 4.2 km of new sewer from the southern fringe of the CBD through the inner metropolitan suburbs of Port Melbourne and South Melbourne.Of the 4.2 km of sewer currently in construction approximately 2.2 km will be constructed using a 2.95 m diameter Lovat EPB tunnel boring machine (TBM) with approximately 1.9 km of small diameter (300 to 600 mm) reticulation sewers constructed using trenchless techniques.These sewers are being constructed in a dense urban environment, which means that the tunnels and shafts are often in close proximity to buildings and structures. The underground constructionof the sewer is further complicated by the variable geology of the ancient Yarra River delta which includes weathered basalts, the infamous Coode island silt formation and fine loose sands.Some of the key challenges and lessons learnt so far during construction include:· steering and alignment control of the TBM through very soft silt with little residual strength,· development and refinement of a monitoring and alarm system for leaving the machine dormant on a day works only project,· control and measurement of tunnel lining defl ection during ring build and grouting,· prediction and monitoring of surface settlements during tunnel excavation,· improved understanding of the geology and hydrogeology at this previously unchartered area of Melbourne,· consolidation settlement due to dewatering at shafts required careful construction controls, and· ground support and excavation in close proximity to the existing 110 year old sewer which requiredvery detailed risk control measures.

The process of desilverising by fractional crystallisation with reflux was investigated through laboratory batch tests and continuous laboratory bench scale tests at CSIRO Clayton, to a 300 kg/hr pilot plant at Port Pine. The pilot plant built at BHAS comprised a vertical cylindrical refining column with internal diameter 250 mm and height 3.2 m, attached at the top to an off-set cylindrical stirred crystalliser tank. Crystals were made in the crystalliser by intermittent immersion of steel cold fingers, which were water cooled between immersions. Gas heat was used for melting the crystals at the base of the column and for side compensation heating. A computerised in strumentation system was employed for data logging and for controlling some critical plant operations. A mechanical device was first employed to promote counter-current plug flow of crystals down the column against the rising stream of reflux liquid, but this was found to be unsatisfactory owing to excess noise, frequent mechanical failure, and excessive accumulation of dross. Plug flow was finally promoted by pulsing the column. Low silver levels, less than 1 gitonne, were achieved with both methods of crystal transport under total reflux conditions. The pulsed column gave results for silver and bismuth which agreed with the theoretical predictions of a computer model, but there was some selective drossing of antimony. In the mechanically agitated column, excessive drossing promoted selective removal of most of the antimony and some of the bismuth, and the results after extended operation were well removed from the theoretical predictions. Plant failures and operating problems prevented the achievement of satisfactory product quality with the necessary reliability under production conditions. Other priorities necessitated the termination of the project before the process could be optimised.

This work investigates some suggested methods for blast vibration monitoring on a hard surface based on 53 tests on a vibration exciter. Errors in the measurement attributable to coupling have been described as function of frequency by the rock-to-mount (or coupling) transmissibility, ie ratio of the velocity of the vibration sensor mount to the velocity of the rock motion. Transmissibility has been measured from 2 to 200 Hz, at two vibration levels (5 and 20 mm/s), in four seismographs. Attachment methods with an anchor, thermal adhesive and gypsum plaster allow stiff rock-to-mount coupling. They ensure accurate measurements (errors below 0.3 dB) for frequencies commonly found in blasting (below 100 Hz) irrespective of the mount characteristics and the vibration level. Free laid mounts and sandbagged vibration sensors lead generally to a poor, weak coupling. Errors are non-linear errors with the input velocity, ie the operating frequency window narrows as the velocity of the ground increases. Free mounts follow ground motion acceptably well (error up to 0.4 dB) at both vibration levels and frequencies below 15 Hz. At higher frequencies, free mounts lead to the largest distortions with expected errors ranging from 0.8 to 6.6 dB. Sandbagging limits the expected errors below 1.3 dB, but it does not prevent large errors that can be up to 4.5 dB. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) in wastewater treatment as a separation process of submillimetre biological flocs is based on the generation of bubble/floc aggregates. DAF is a complex process but has got advantages, such as allowing a high hydraulic load, compared to sedimentation. A thorough knowledge of the physics of the DAF process is, however, still lacking. This paper will present results of experimental studies on three aspects of significance to the separation process û the flow structure in the flotation tank, rise velocities of aggregates, influence of floc size on the separation efficiency. Flow structure. Measurements were performed in a pilot plant mapping and visualising the velocity field. The dispersion water (bubbles) had a decisive influence on the flow structure due to the effect of the bubbles on the bulk water density. Stratified conditions with a less dense, bubble-containing upper layer and a clear water, denser bottom layer were important for a good separation. A simple model of the stratified flow structure was elaborated making it possible to interpret the function of the aggregate rise velocities. Bubble/floc aggregates. The dynamics of single flocs, bubbles, aggregates were visualised using a borescope + CCD video camera + digital recorder + image analysis. Sequences of video frames made it possible to determine the rise velocities of the single aggregates. These velocities were found to be in the range 1 - 9 mm/s with a tendency for large flocs to have higher rise velocities. Separation versus floc size. The floc size distribution was measured in the DAF process. Data from three different DAF cases showed, that large flocs (> about 100 ¦m) were entirely separated, whereas small flocs experienced a less good separation. It was, moreover, found, that a very significant separation of flocs took place in the very upstream end of the separation zone in a pilot plant case.

"Successful rehabilitation of tailings landforms of tens to thousands of hectares in size at base metal mines is critical to mining companies’ ‘social licence to operate’. Rehabilitation technology used is closely related to both the economic sustainability of the mining company and the ecological sustainability of the mined environment. Conventional technology to rehabilitate mine waste landforms is costly and constrained by the availability of soil (to reconstruct root zones) and clay materials (to reconstruct compressed layer). Depending on mine waste properties and site-specific resource availability, it is not uncommon to cost A$0.1–0.5 M/ha for the establishment of conventional cover systems over mine waste domains, which often accounts for large proportion of the total closure costs. This can lead to costs approaching several hundred millions dollars for rehabilitating larger tailings and acidic waste rock using conventional cover systems.The present extended abstract proposes a suite of new technologies to tackle the problems outlined above and discusses critical factors in successful rehabilitation from substrate levels to the whole landform performance, in two key aspects:in situ engineering of tailings soil to offset/reduce materials requiredin situ chemical engineering of massive hardpan layer through alkali-activation and mineral gel cross-linking network mechanisms to encapsulate reactive tailings and achieving sustainable hydro-geochemical stability in root zones.This aims at functionally replacing the roles of the compressed clay layer and capillary breaks in conventional covers. A number of hydrometallurgical treatment methods are being developed to extract copper from chalcopyrite flotation concentrate including microbial leaching and ferric sulfate leaching. However, chalcopyrite is difficult to process efficiently by hydrometallurgical methods as it exhibits slow reaction kinetics. Comparative leaching tests do not always satisfactorily explain or predict observed copper recovery, acid consumption, or differential leaching of minerals. This is especially true when reactive gangue constituents are present. The aim of this study was to determine how the leaching regime (microbial versus ferric sulfate) affects both the extraction of copper and residue mineralogy. Chalcopyrite flotation concentrate was leached at 30¦C and 65¦C using a pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and a mixed consortium of thermophiles, respectively. In addition, the concentrate was leached at the same temperatures using 0.1 M ferric sulfate. Microbial leaching of chalcopyrite extracted more copper than ferric sulfate oxidation of chalcopyrite at 30¦C, demonstrating that the microbes promoted the solubilisation of copper at this temperature. This result was confirmed by leach solution analyses and residue analysis using quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). More chalcopyrite was oxidized with ferric sulfate at 65¦C than at 30¦C (as expected). QXRD confirmed that pyrite reacted during ferric sulfate leaching at 65¦C but was relatively unreactive during lower temperature leaching. The high ferric ion concentration in the ferric sulfate leach at 65¦C led to significant precipitation of jarosite. This phase was only detected in small amounts at 30¦C in both the microbial and ferric leached residues. Sulfur also precipitated in the ferric leaching at 65¦C whereas no sulfur was detected in the microbial leached residue. Quartz was a relatively unreactive mineral phase regardless of the leaching medium and temperature. QXRD analysis indicated the residue mineralogy differed with different leaching regime.

The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, suchmineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associatedquartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonlycontain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. The portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was trialled to determine the extent and intensity of any hydrothermal alteration halo associated with gold mineralisation in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) of the Otago Schist.   Twelve diamond drillholes through the HMSZ were analysed with the PIMA at a sample spacing of 1 m. The drillholes were selected on two traverses along the line of strike and down-dip of the mineralisation in and around Panel 2 of the Frasers underground development.   The study showed that the Hangingwall shear of the HMSZ has a more distinctive infrared signature in intersections with high grades. The Hangingwall shear in these drill holes is defined by a shift in the wavelength of the Al-OH absorption feature from ~2220 nm to <2210 nm. This shift is attributed to a change in the mineralogy from phengite to muscovite. Overprinting this trend in some of the drillholes is the presence of the 2210 nm Al-OH absorption feature, ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite also tends to be present in numerous other regions of the schist above the Hangingwall shear associated with steeply dipping faults and foliation parallel joints. In drill holes with low grades the Hangingwall shear does not exhibit any obvious infrared signature.   At the scale of study, the PIMA does not provide evidence for an alteration halo associated with hydrothermal mineralisation above the Hangingwall shear. Possible tectonic movement may have displaced any alteration halo that once existed, away from the zone of mineralisation. For this reason, PIMA apparently cannot be used for predicting the location of the Hangingwall shear during exploration drilling. However, the study did show that the PIMA could define the Hangingwall shear when the rocks were sufficiently altered and mineralised.

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

A significant resource of uranium has been discovered within a buried palaeochannel located in the south western corner of the Officer Basin of Western Australia by PNC Exploration (Australia) Pty. Ltd. The mineral- isation is redox controlled and is hosted by Eocene organic rich paludal sediments. Prob- able insitu reserves are 13,000 t of contained uranium with an average ore grade of 0.12% at a cutoff grade of 0.03% U. The Mulga Rock palaeochannel has been traced for at least 100 km beneath the Quaternary surficial cover. The main channel is horseshoe shaped with the channel arms vary- ing from 5 to 15 km in width. The western arm connects to the Lake Raeside-Ponton Creek drainage system, whilst the eastern arm'is open to the south. The headwaters of the palaeo- channel are thought to have been the Lake Minigwal drainage system, prior to its capture by the Lake Rason system. Differential.erosion of the basement rocks during the Late Cretac- eous to Early Tertiary strongly influenced channel shape and resulted in the main channel being confined to a Permian,mudstone filled valley. Upwards of 100 m of fluviatile sediments accumulated within the palaeovalley during a period of subsidence in the Early Tertiary. Three broad stratigraphic units have been re- cognised within the channel: 1. An upper unit of fluviatile sands with interbedded lacustrine sediments, which have subsequently been wholly oxidised and variably silicified and ferruginised. 2. A middle unit of lacustrine to paludal sediments, which host the main mineral- isation. 3. A basal unit of fluviatile gravels and sand. The presence of excellently preserved Nothofagidites in organic rich paludal sediments from the middle unit, suggest that unit was laid down in a non-marine, fluviatile, humid environ- ment during the Middle Eocene.

The GDR has extensive lignite deposits at its disposal, which formed the basis for the development of an independent energy source after 1945 and which will retain their significance well beyond the year 2000 (see fig. 1). In 1946 lignite output was about 110 x 106 t. In 1985 312x 106 t was produced and in 1988 the planned output will be ca. 315 x 106 t. Thus, the domestic produc- tion of lignite covers ca. 75% of the GDR's primary energy requirements. More than 80% of the electrical energy is gener- ated by the use of lignite and about 12% by nuclear energy. In addition to this, about 18 x 106 t/a mineral oil and about 6 x 109, m3/a natural gas are imported, predominantly from the Soviet Union. The lignite deposits of the GDR are of Tertiary origin and are recovered exclusively by opencast mining. There are two large regions (fig. 2): - in the region east of the river Elbe (Cottbus/Senftenberg- "Niederlausitz") and - in the region west of the river Elbe (Halle/Leip- zig/Magdeburg). These deposits differ in geological age and conditions of depo- sition, consequently there are differences in their chemical and physical composition and, thus, in their uses. The younger Mio- cene coals of the main region in the East of the river Elbe belong to the epirogenetic type and have a low content of ash and sul- phur. Among other things, they are suitable for the production of brown coal high-temperature coke (Lauchhammer and Schwarze Pumpe). The older Oligocene coals of the Halle/Leip- zig region are bitumenous in certain areas. Therefore, they form the basis for production in low-temperature carbonizing and chemical plants. In the Halle-Magdeburg region, where the lig- nite is in contact with the underlying Zechstein subdivision, so- called "salt coals" are found.
