A new ecologically promising technology for the copper-nickel ore benefication using insert gases and pyrrhotite depression is under consideration. The finely dispersed nickel-containing sulphides and the pyrrhotite are easily oxidised during the process of flotation resulting in deterioration of selectivity and valuable component loss in the tailings. One of the ways to improve the benefication is the flotation of easily-oxidising minerals in an inert atmosphere. In the experiments nitrogen was taken as the inert gas supposing that in the industrial scale operations nitrogen generating, as a by-product of the oxigen production. will be used (Rybas et at, 1989). The most wide-spread mineral in the Norilsk rich sulphide copper-nickel ores is pyrrhotite containing iron, sulphur, nickel and platinum group metals. Up to 30 per cent of the pyrrhotite sulphur is recovered into the nickel concentrate causing the high sulphur dioxide emission in the further pyrometallurgical process of nickel production. This is the reason why the problem of the pyrrhotite removal during the ore concentration should be solved, the critical factor of the problem being the lowest possible nickel content in the pyrrhotite. According to the data of the geological and mineralogical mapping the nickel content in the pyrrhotites of rich ores varies from 0.3 to 1.8 per cent, with the mean value equal to 0.6 - 0.8 per cent. This assures the technological and economical effectiveness of the low-grade pyrrhotite removal during the flotation process.

The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

Arsenic-containing waste was dissolved into molten slags and the leaching behaviour of the quenched arsenic-doped slags (containing up to 2.3 wt per cent arsenic) was ascertained to evaluate the potential of this method as a means for arsenic disposal. The leaching behaviour was evaluated using acetic and sulphuric/nitric acid based solutions.From short-term (18 hour) leach tests, the amounts of arsenic in the leach solutions were found generally to decrease with an increase in the Fe(III)/Fe(total) ratio of the slag or an increase in pH of the leach solution. The amount of arsenic in solution increased with an increase in the slag basicity, the slag arsenic concentration or the surface area of the slag exposed to the leach solution. From longer term leach tests (up to 40 weeks) in the pH range 5 to 8, the arsenic remaining in the leach solution was believed to be controlled by sorption processes. The sorbent was an iron oxide-rich material which had the capacity to lower the arsenic concentration in the leach bottles to well below 1 ppm in some cases. At a leach solution pH over 9, the arsenic concentration in the solution increased with time, although the rate of solubilisation was much slower due to the high pH.Slags have the potential to stabilise arsenic and prevent it entering the environment provided attention is paid to the slag chemical composition and oxygen potential.

Fluid inclusions and sulfur isotopic compositions were studied in a possible extension of the Toyoha polymetallic vein deposit. The objective of this work was to gain a better understanding of the ore depositional conditions, sources of ore constituents, and distribution of mineralizing fluid in the region. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz show that most homogenization temperatures range between 190¦ and 290¦C. Most salinities range from 0.0 to 3.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. Sulfur isotopic compositions of ore minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and galena), determined by a conventional technique, range between 1.3 and 7.7 per mil. The mineralizing fluids were characterized by relatively low and various temperatures and low to moderate salinities compared to those at the southeast region of the main ore bodies (Izumo and Shinano veins) where rare elements such as tin, tungsten and indium occurred. Obtained temperatures and salinities were attributed to the mixing of hydrothermal fluids with groundwater. Sulfur isotopic data suggest sulfide sulfur was of magmatic origin. Isotopic temperatures, estimated from the isotopic fractionation factor between sphalerite and coexisting galena, are between 195¦ and 322¦C. The temperatures are only consistent with fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures in sphalerite or coexisting quartz when sphalerite was a honey-yellow coarse crystal lacking conspicuous colored growth bands. This suggests the detailed classification of mineral pairs growth textures will be necessary for precise in situ measurements to obtain reasonable eothermometric results.

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

The nickel exploration boom of the late-1960s and early-1970s led to the discovery of numerous komatiite-hosted nickel sulphide deposits, associated with variably serpentinised bodies of olivine-rich cumulates. Subsequent research has shown the importance of volcanological processes to understanding the genesis of these deposits. Crucial developments have come through consideration of the fluid dynamics of magmas and magma-crystal mixtures, through observation of the dynamics and geometry of modern day basaltic lava flows, through application of theory and experimentation on the kinetics of crystal growth from magmas, and most importantly from extensive detailed field mapping of komatiitic sequences in the Yilgarn Block and elsewhere. From these studies has emerged a new integrated view of the volcanological setting of komatiite-hosted deposits, and a recognition that a complete continuum of deposit types exists. Nevertheless, komatiite associated magmatic nickel deposits generally fall into two overall types based on the nature of the sulphide ore. In the first type the bulk of the ore is either massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide or a variable mixture of massive sulphide and an ore characterised by olivine crystals in a continuous matrix of sulphide occupying between 30 and 75 per cent by volume of the rock (called Matrix Ore). Nickel grades of massive sulphide ore range from 2 - 20 wt% and those of the matrix ore generally fall in the range 1 - 5 wt% (average 2.5 wt%) Ni/Cu ratios of the sulphide fraction are generally >10.

At moderate depths this question is of relatively small importance, but at depths over 2,000 feet it becomes a matter of some consequence. The rate of increase of temperature with the depth varies in different localities, but as a rough average we may take it to be about 1° Fahr. for every 50 feet of depth. The variation of temperature of the earth's surface from summer to winter penetrates to a comparatively shallow depth. At 50 feet the variation becomes practically insensible, and the temperature of the strata will be about the mean temperature at the given locality, from 60° to 75° F. in this country or the comfort of men working in the mines it is desirable to maintain a temperature of about 70° F. in the workings, or approximately the temperature of the strata near the surface.In order to obtain some idea of the magnitude of the undertaking involved in cooling a mine, I have examined the effect of placing in a long drive an apparatus by means of which we can abstract heat at a uniform rate from the drive, keeping, thetemperature nearly the same at all points of the drive at any given time.The lowering of temperature 70 F. at any distance feet from the centre of the drive (treated as a cylinder of the same sectional area as the actual drive), after an interval of time days from the commencement of the operation is given by the formula...

Fluid circulation occurs in oceanic crust of all ages, at the seafloor spreading axis, on mid-ocean ridge flanks, in the ocean basins, and in subduction zones. In the first three settings the fluid originates as seawater. At the axis and on the ridge flanks, the circulating seawater produces a major chemical exchange between the oceans and the crust. Based on heat budget constraints, between 10 and 40% of the river flux of Mg can be taken up during high-temperature alteration of the basaltic crust along the mid-ocean ridge axis. Most of the hydrothermal -heat loss, however, occurs on the mid-ocean ridge flanks, where the temperatures are lower and the seawater flux correspondingly larger. The estimated heat loss on the flanks is so large that upwelling must occur over a large fraction (5-30%) of the seafloor less than 65 Ma in age, at seepage velocities on the order of 10 to 100 cm/yr. The circulating seawater need lose less than 1 to 2% of its Mg content in order to solve the Mg mass balance for the oceans. Fluids in subduction zones are commonly less saline than seawater and are rich in methane and other light hydrocarbons. These fluids may originate by dewatering of the downgoing slab. If so, they may close the geochemical cycle of H2O that began with hydration of the basaltic crust at the ridge axis.

Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.

Segnit's article puts forward the views that the rocks associated with the Broken Hill lode are simply highly metamorphosed sediments, tbat metasomatism on a large scale was not an important factor at Broken Hill and that the rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.In particular, the garnet quartzite, the most abundant rock in the limited section of the mine examined by Segnit, is described by him as a simple, metamorphosed manganiferous sediment.These views, while consonant with those of H. F. King (1958), are drastically opposed to those of myself and others e.g. Gustafson et al. (1950, p. 1383) who state that the most extensive hydrothermal alteration in the district is in and close to the zinc lodes in the Zinc Corporation and New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. mines. Segnit's conclusions conflict with 1. the absence of any manganiferous sediment in the Broken Hill district except in close proximity to the lode,2. the clear cut metasomatism of the dolerite dykes which indicates that the ore is younger than the dykes and therefore post-metamorphism, and 3. the petrofabric study of den Tex (1958) which provided independent evidence that the ore in its present form post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area.The original sediments of the district were mudstones and calcareous sandstones with 2 to 5 per cent CaO. The bulk of the worldÆs production of iron ore is processed into steel. The needs of the steel industry therefore demand a high exploration and exploitation of iron ore. One trend within the industry has been a great increase in the demand of iron ore and this is reflected in an increase in world steel production from 1955 to date. In addition to the high demand for steel, is ChinaÆs high appetite to feed its steel industry. It is therefore important that the iron ore potential of Ghana is showcased for eventual exploitation by potential investors to meet this enormous demand for the commodity in the industry globally. Ghana has three main iron deposits of potential industrial and commercial importance. They are: Shieni sedimentary iron ore (reserves: 1.270 X 106 metric tonnes), Pudo titaniferous-magnetiferous iron ore and the Opon-Mansi lateritic iron ore deposits. The Opon-Mansi iron ore deposit occurs in the Western region of Ghana. The ore deposits are located on top of the range of 15 hills, which extend over a distance of 24 km from Opon-valley, south of the Western region to Dunkwa. The area has an estimated 147 Mt of iron deposit, with Fe content of 52.5 per cent. This paper looks at the iron ore potential of Ghana and how it is capable of attracting potential investors to exploit this valuable mineral for global consumption.

The equipment and general smelter layout for the Mount Isa Copper Smelter were designed by engineers associated with the American Smelting and Refining Company and by Mount Isa staff engineers. The final notice of site was dictated by the need for 'building the smelter near the existing Mount Isa power house to enable full use to be made of the steam from the waste heat boilers. Although much excavation work was necessary before concrete foundations could be poured, the location lends itself to further expansion should it become necessary. The plant is designed and constructed to involve straight line smelting operations which include the following major steps in the overall scheme.1. Charge make-up.2. Roasthig.3. Reverberatory smelting.4. Converting.5. Refining.6. Casting.CHARGE MAKE-UPA system of proportioning bins is provided for preparing the feed mixture for the roasters, Sulphide concentrate containing 24% copper wiil be delivered by belt conveyor from the filter plant to the smelter storage patio. This is a large roofed concrete floor that provides a maximum storage capacity of 8,000 tons of concentrate. Eight proportioning bins located below but adjacent to the south end of the patio will be used for actual charge make-up from which concentrate, ore and flux will be proportioned to the feed belt and conveyed to the roaster feed hoppers. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

The Fairbanks Mining District in central Alaska was discovered in 1902 and since then approximately 7.5 million troy oz of placer gold, 250,000 troy oz of lode gold, and several thousand short tons of antimony and tungsten hap been produced from an area of about 1000 km . Historic lode production was from high grade gold-quartz veins that averaged 1.3 OPT free milling gold. Five main types of mineral deposits' are recognized in the district. I. Conformable, stratabound volcanogenic zinc, antimony, lead, and copper sulfides in places containing gold, silver and tungsten in bimodal metavoleanics (Cleary Sequence). II. Complex precious metal-bearing lead sulfosalt-quartz veins in Cretaceous granitic intrusives. III. Tungsten skarns adjacent to granitic intrusives. IV. Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide-quartz veins crosscutting metavolcanics and metasedimentary units of the Cleary Sequence. V. Antimony-bearing gash veins along axial plane shears in various lithologies of the Cleary Sequence. Type I and Type IV mineral occurrences are currently being evaluated as low. grade bulk tonnage (target model 16-20 'million tons of 0.05 to 0.15 OPT)'and high grade moderate tonnage (target model 0.5 to 2.5 million tons of 0.5 OPT) gold deposits. The host rocks for Type I mineralization occur over a 30 km strike length and are at least 300 meters thick. The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

Australia's gold mining industry has seen a resurgence in the past seven years - a resurgence the likes of which has been seen in very few, if any of this nation's other mineral industries. Industry experts are predicting that Australia could become one of the world's largest gold producers as the future of the South African gold industry looks increasingly tenuous under the present political crisis in that country. Therefore, it is utterly ludicrous for the Federal Government to introduce a tax which will see the Australian gold industry "wither on the vine."The Queensland State Government is utterly opposed to a tax on gold. Anyone in their right mind, who has seen the statistics could only agree with our stance. In 1984/85, activity in the gold mining industry is estimated to have accounted for over $750 million in national income, over$1,200 million in national output, and tax revenue of at least $115 million as well as providing more than 16,000 jobs. Chartered accountants Coopers and Lybrand's survey on the gold industry last year showed an increase in exploration expenditure by gold producers and explorers by up to 36% in 1986 from 1985 levels. That level is expected to be maintained in real terms for most of the remainder of the decade under the present tax arrangements. This is in contrast with the mining sector as a whole, where a recent Australian Mining Industry Council survey forecasted a 14% FALL in production.

The locality from where these specimens come is distant about 12 miles due south from the township of Bingara New South Wales, and is known locally as Carney's Reef, Barrack's Creek, Top Bingara. The formation traverses the western side of a serpentine spur from the main range, which runs through the country from the other side of Tamworth to Inverell, in the New England District. It has a due north and south trend, with an easterly underlay slightly out of the vertical. The formation has been opened up at different points for a distance of over two miles, and each place showing gold in the stone, and no place more than three to four chlins apart, the whole distance along the line of Reef being leased. The formation varies in thickness, the smallest being about 1 foot and the widest about 10 feet. The following is a list of properties, and description of work done on them at present. First south, and about one and a half miles from Hanion Brothers' old BalIarat claim due north, Court and patty hold a tenacre lease. The formation outcrops near the south boundary, and gold is obtainable in the stone. In the centre of the lease a costeen pit has cut the capping, which shows gold, and about two chains from the north boundary another one cuts the capping, also showing gold. The reef averages, where exposed on this property, 3 feet wide.

THIS instrument, depends on the principle that, over a short period, the surfaee of a porous substance from which a liquid is evaporating receives the same amount of heat by conduction, convection, and radiation as it loses in the latent heat of the evaporating liquid. If, then, the amount of heat being received by a surface can be measured, the rate of evaporation can also be obtained. The Kata thermometer is also based on this principle differently applied.The instrument, as shown in Fig. 1, consists essentially of a thermometer with a sliding which is divided by three pointers into two equal parts which may be spaced so as to cover a distance of, for example, 5° of the thermometer scale. The instrument is calibrated so that the amount of heat required per unit area of the bulb to raise the menissus is known. The method of using the instrument is as follows:The slide is first set so that thc central pointer is at the temperature of the evaporating surface.The thermometer is cooled by any convenient means so that the meniscus is several below the lowest pointer. The thermometer is then placed near the evaporating surface, when the Ineniscus begins to rise and the time taken for it to rise from the lowest to the top pointer is measured. From this and the calibration results the amount of heat retained per unit area of the bulb at the mean temperature...

The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.
