New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

AngloGold operates various gold mines in South Africa, the largest of which are situated in the North West province. The impact of AngloGold Vaal River mining operations on the environment and, specifically, on aquifers and groundwater is assessed. The location of such aquifers and plumes is determined by remote-sensing and ground-sensing operations, followed up with the correct placement of monitoring boreholes from which information such as water rest levels, chemistry and geological data is gathered. This study utilises an integrated approach consisting of the following mutually reinforcing phases: Phase 1: Airborne multi spectral scanning; Phase 2: Airborne thermal remote sensing; Phase 3: Ground resistivity survey; Phase 4: Borehole placement; and Phase 5: Sampling and monitoring. The integration of the investigation tools and phases in use at AngloGold Vaal River has been found to be very useful in determining the exact sources of contamination, the direction of flow of such contamination, the positioning of interceptive measures and the analysis of such contamination. This adopted approach will enable the development of flow transport models that will further enhance our knowledge of contaminants in aquifers at the mine and enable management to conduct educated interventions.

Commissioning of the Cannington processing plant began in October 1997. The nameplate capacity (of 1.55 million tonnes of ore per annum) was achieved relatively quickly. Since then (like many mines) the operation has strived to increase throughput and improve valuable metal recoveries, to offset declining head grades and lift the value of the operation. The processing plant now has the capability of treating over 3.2 million tonnes of ore per annum and in financial year 2005/06 the combined concentrate production exceeded 600 000 wet tonnes, approximately 80 per cent above concentrate output in the first full year of operation (at the design feed rate). This improved performance was achieved by making changes and additions to each of the major unit processes û primary grinding, flotation, leaching, filtering and paste fill preparation. The changes have included: adding a fines flotation circuit, expanding the grinding circuit, adding a pebble crusher, switching from continuous to batch leaching, building paste conveyors and decommissioning the column flotation cleaning circuits. This paper reviews these changes, outlines the current operating practices and discusses the challenges or opportunities that remain.

At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

The green energy transition is expected to require a range of valuable minerals, which could be supplied through deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining. Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are mineral deposits with a composition well suited to produce lithium batteries, which are expected to be a necessary energy storage solution (Diouf and Pode, 2015; Paulikas et al, 2020) for the energy transition. By 2050 the annual demand for both cobalt and lithium is estimated to increase by around 450 per cent from 2018 levels (Hund et al, 2023), with the annual demand for nickel being greater than 2 million tons, and copper greater than 1 million tons. Polymetallic nodule mining is well positioned to provide these minerals in the near future. An intricate and comparatively unexplored ecosystem thrives within and surrounding the nodule fields (Smith et al, 2008). Deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt and permanently damage this ecosystem through introduced pollution, artificial noise and light, and habitat destruction. Hence, there is a pressing need for new engineering and scientific endeavours to focus on developing new technologies to reduce any environmental impact from mining.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. In recent years new instrumentation and digital technology have Wrote possible a new facet of goo-physics: broadband seismology. From digitally record-ing networks and arrays. broadband scistnograrns of body waves that are flat to displacement and veloc-ity in at least the frequency range from 0.01 to 5.0 liz can now be routinely obtained for most carthquakes of magnitude greater than about 5.5. In contrast to data from conventional narrowband seismographs, broad-band body waves have sufficient spectral information to nvest,igate the many frequency-dependent eflects that may arise from source finiteness and from wave prop-agat ion phenomenon. Besides the usual parameters of depth. moment and focal mechanism, broadband data have sufficient spectral information to provide estimates of radiated energy, associated stresses and the frequency dependence of source parameters. Moreover. teleseis-mically recorded broadband data and near-field strong motion accelerograms overlap in the frequency band be-tween about 0.1-2.0 Hz. Thus. v it h broadband data it is possible to connect far field and near field data in order to make estimates of acceleration for almost any seismically active region of the circum-Pacific.

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. Silicon is a vital element in many products today, such as electronic components, solar devices, high-quality alloys, and many others. The growing global demand highlights the need for the development of sustainable production methods to meet this demand as an alternative to the current carbothermic reduction, submerged arc furnace (SAF) based process. An alternative to this is the aluminothermic reduction of quartz in a CaO-SiO2 slag, which not only reduces direct carbon dioxide emissions but also promotes the utilisation of secondary raw materials such as quartz fines, aluminium dross and scrap as well as secondary alumina (SA) from dross recycling. In the current study, the effects of SA and CaF2 additions to slag on the resulting metal composition and metal yield were explored. Results were compared with thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.1. Experimental results show that, in agreement with thermodynamic simulations, the silicon content of the alloy is increased, while the Ca is decreased for starting slags where CaO-SiO2 is partly replaced by CaF2. Similarly, the addition of SA to the initial slag results in an alloy with a higher silicon content.

A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

At the beginning of the seventies pre- drainage of methane was introduced in West German coal mining in order to reduce the gas emission from the worked seam. After three pilot tests on the "Rheinland" Colliery (86 boreholes in seam "Prasident"), "Bergmannsgluck/ Westerholt" Colliery (23 boreholes in seam "Gustav") and "General Blumenthal" Colliery (27 boreholes in seam "Hugo" and 170 boreholes in seam "Karl") systematic large scale tests with extended investigations were carried out un the "Rheinland" Colliery (127 boreholes in the seams "Anna", "Blucher", Prasident"). During this time an analogous test was carried out on the "Consolidation" Colliery (21 bore- holes in seam "B"). In these studies and tests the technical feasibility, efficiency and economy could be proved, so that pre-drainage of methane starts spreading. On the "Rheinland" Colliery pre-drainage has become common practice in gassy seams. Mainly two points impede a faster spreading of method: 1. in many cases the necessary requirement, that one or both of the gate roads should ire driven 6 to 12 months before the face is worked, is missing. This is mainly due to the difficulty of retreat mining in passe seams.

Measurement of pressure distribution under the base plate of the Hemscheidt 2-leg 800-ton shield was performed underground for two shifts using 12 pressure cells installed in two rows, one each under each split base plate. Pressure distribution was uneven depending on contact condition. In general the highest base pressure occurred at 1/3 of the base plate contact length from the rear edge. The resultant was near vertical, and the pressure under the tail side split base plate was always higher than the head side. For comparison, pressure distribution on the canopy and under the base plate was also measured under controlled conditions at the USBM's Mine Simulator Testing Facilities in Pittsburgh, PA. A total of 45 tests were conducted under several simulated contact conditions. The results showed that the actual contact area is highly dependent on the compliance of the immediate roof and floor due to the sloped canopy tip and a base lifting device under the base tip. The loading distribution tends to change in magnitude and profile as the leg pressure increases. The base lifting device exaggerates the high toe loading on the base plate characteristics of this type of shield support.

A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The in situ behaviour of claystone floors associated with the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifem Seams has been studied using a comprehensive suite of stress and displacement monitors. The instrumentation was supplemented by in situ and laboratory testing of the claystone materials. The instrumentation demonstrated that the presence of claystone floors is associated with floor heave, extra rib spall, and settlement of the pillar into the floor. Horizontal floor extensometers showed that the depth of extrusion of clay was limited to 1-2 in. A pore pressure transducer installed in a claystone floor demonstrated the possible existence of short-term undrained behaviour of the claystone. Long term swelling of destressed claystone was also documented. Settlement of pillars into claystone floors can be analysed using simple elastic theory. The assumption of plane strain is valid for most claystone thickness/pillar width aspect ratios. Floor heave can be analysed using bearing capacity concepts. However, it is considered that heave is the result of local bearing capacity failure in the rib spall zone. The advantage of this model is that the bearing capacity equation can be applied without resort to unrealistically high factors of safety.

Large Late Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia, Canada and Zimbabwe, contain abundant mesothermal gold, volcanogenic massive base-metal sulphide, and komatiite-associated Ni-Cu mineralization. These greenstone belts are similar in many respects to convergent and accretionary plate margins found in the Pacific rim; modem environments which are cor-respondingly rich in gold and base-metal mineralization. The giant gold placer deposits of the Late Archaean Witwatersrand Basin (the world's largest gold producer) formed in a foreland or retro-arc basin; in a similar tectonic setting to much modem placer mineralization around the Pacific. Gold and volcanogenic base-metal sulphide mineralization are abundant in Late Archaean terranes and the Pacific rim because1. gold mineralization is a product of convergent margin tectonics, and 2. accretion in convergent margin orogens provides the best chance of preserving base-metal mineralization related to submarine volcanism.It is therefore likely that the abundance of gold and base-metal sulphide mineralization in the Late Archaean reflects the widespread growth and sta-bilization of continental crust via tectonic processes broadly similar to those operating in the present Pacific basin.

The Awak Mas gold project is located in the Province of South Sulawesi, Republic of Indonesia. It is situated 300 km by road north of the provincial capital of Ujung Pandang. The capital is readily accessible by air from Australia via Denpasar on Bali or the Indonesian capital, Jakarta (Figure 1). Elevations at Awak Mas range from 850 to 1400 metres above sea level in reasonably rugged terrain. The area is covered by primary and secondary (regrowth) rain forest. The region is subject to an equatorial-type tropical climate. The annual rainfall is a high 3000 mm most of which falls in the rainy season between March and June. In the lower valleys rice, cloves and chocolate crops are cultivated. Title to the project area is secured by a Contract of Work (COW) issued to PT Masmindo Eka Sakti (MES) on 23 October 1987 by the Government of Indonesia. MES was controlled at the time by New Hope Industries group of Brisbane. After New Hope had completed initial reconnaissance exploration of the area, Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC) farmed-in in 1991 and earned a 60 per cent beneficial interest in MES.
