In order to develop the HF-free flotation reagent system, the main objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of separation of quartz from feldspar using non-ionic surfactants as the collector. The non-ionic surfactants used were polyoxyethyl cethyl ether (PECE) and polyethylene glycol monocethyl ether (PGME). The flotation behaviour of quartz and microcline with PECE and PGME was investigated. Each surfactant was a good selective collector for quartz with its recovery being influenced by pH and surfactant concentration. Quartz is floated favourably by both types of polyoxyethylene non-ionic surfactant whereas microcline was not so much. The floatability of quartz increases as the oxyethylene length of surfactants increases. Zeta potential measurements in the system of PGME/mineral were also carried out. It was determined that in the absence of PGME the points of zero charge for quartz and microcline should be approximately at pH 2.5 and 1.8, respectively. The addition of PGME to the system causes both minerals to become less negatively charged. Differences in the zeta potential value between quartz and microcline, in the presence of PGME, were detected. It can be suggested that the interaction of the oxyethylene group to the microcline surface should not be as strong as that to the quartz surface. In the mixed surfactant system of PGME and dodecylamine acetate (DAA), a small addition of DAA causes drastic enhancement of quartz flotation in the wide pH range of 1 ~ 10. The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. Chromite ores have a long history of low pricing and for AustraliaÆs only chromite mine this has been a particularly tough challenge, especially as the mine is located nearly 400 km from the nearest port at Port Hedland. A stockpile of chromite fines (-16 mm) has been built up since 2003. The opportunity to develop a facility to treat this material to produce a chip (-16 + 1 mm) product and a sands (-1 mm + 45 micron) product was taken when the price increased to above US$140/t. A simple add-on plant containing a heavy media cyclone circuit for the chips and a spiral circuit for the sands was designed and developed. During construction of the fines plant the price of chromite reached a level where the payback for the entire project was less than eight weeks. Soon afterwards the price and the demand for chromite plummeted and the site was put on care and maintenance, except for the commissioning of the fines plant. This put considerable pressure on whether to continue to operate the plant or to place it in care and maintenance. Times of boom and bust provide management with almost totally opposite views. By not taking a conservative view on prices and costs, the effect of extremely low prices and minimal demand can be devastating to a good project. Designing and building plants with conservative costings in boom times gives a greater chance of keeping projects alive during the bust periods that tend to follow.

The Ravensworth-Liddell area is part of the Muswellbrook- Singleton Coal District of the Northern Coalfield. It lies in the Parishes of Liddell, Ravensworth, Vane and Howick, in the County of Durham, midway between Singleton and Muswellbrook, and is traversed by the Great Northern Railway, and the New England Highway.Ravensworth and Liddell railway stations are 57 miles arid 61 miles, respectively, north from Newcastle (Fig. 1).The area has been the centre of an intensive search for open cut coal during the past few years. More than 1,200 bores, of which about 10% were cored diamond drill holes, were drilled to depths of about 200ft. Portions with thicker cover have been explored by 10 diamond drill holes to depths of over 400ft. but core recovery from these deeper holes was poor, and the lack of detail in the recorded logs limits geological interpretation. The drilling has proved about 34,000,000 tons of open cut coal, and about 246,000,000 tons under deeper cover.GEOLOGYThe Ravensworth-Liddell area lies on the eastern flank and southern extremity of the Muswellbrook Dome, extending from Hebden in the north, to Jerry's Plains in the south, and the rocks under consideration belong to the Tomago Stage of the Upper Coal Measures. On the north they are truncated by the Hebden Thrust fault, which has a throw of about 4,500ft. (Raggatt, 1929). A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. An interpretation of the observed effects is proposed in the light of current knowledge of solid state physics and physical Chemistry.

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Some attempt to minimise the importance of the greenhouse phenomenon. They do so by observing that global temperatures are still within the range of recent variations and that it is still not possible to predict with any certainty what the precise consequences of greenhouse will be. Both observations are true though the conclusion is dangerous. Ice core samples from the Antarctic and Greenland have established the composition of the atmosphere and global temperature over almost the last 200,000 years. The profile of these twin variables shows that they have moved together; when the concentration of CO2 has been up, the temperature has been up and when the former has been down the temperature has also been down. Over almost 200,000 years the CO2 content has ranged between lows of 190 ppm and highs of 270ppm. In just 200 years of industrialisation the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased to 350 ppm, 50% higher that the mean of the last 200,000 years and 30% higher than at the start of the industrial age. Carbon dioxide is now increasing at 0.5% p.a. Methane, about twenty times more effective than CO2 as a greenhouse gas has doubled in concentration in the last two centuries and is now increasing at about 1.1% p.a. Methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons together with a number of lesser gases will double the greenhouse effect due to in creased CO2 over the next 40-50 years.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.

In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core. Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. The experimentaJ work described in this paper deals with the preparation of titanium trichloride by reduction of titanium tetrachloride with hydrogen on hot surfaces.REDUCING AGENTS FOR TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDEThe free energy diagram (Fig. 1) for the formation of chlorides suggests that titanium' tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride by various reducing agents such as aluminium, zinc, arsenic, antimony, tin, mercury, silver, hydrogen, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Ruff and Neumann (1923), Thorpe (1885) , Billy and Brasseur (1935) and Seurbert and Schmidt (1892) used various metals to reduce tetrachloride to trichloride and found that the yields were invariably low and the products difficult to separate.Besides the metallic reducing agents, hydrogen may also be used to reduce titanium tetrachloride to trichloride.Goerges and Stahler (1909) obtained a deposit of violet...

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

Deep hydrothermal fluids adjacent to the Alpine Fault move through the brittle-ductile transition to mix with convecting fluids from near surface environments. These tectonically driven fluids evolve mainly from prograde metamorphism at mid crustal depth (ten kilometres) within the ductile regime which has been elevated due to advection and drag on the fault plane. Through the onset of brittle failure and cataclasis within Alpine Fault mylonites, fluid overpressuring results in hydrofracturing and localized implosion. Along the length of the Alpine Fault, hydrothermal alteration varies on most levels (Table 1). There is an observable increase in Fe-Mg carbonate between the Waitaha and Taramakau Rivers (between Ross and Aurthur's Pass, respectively). Field studies concentrate to the north east of the Arahura River, noted for historical mineral wealth. Late meteoric fluids move through cataclasite, brecciated mylonite, and other open fractures. Chloritisation is the major retrogressive phase. Dolomitic hydrofracture veins (Figure 1) within coherent mylonites contain iron and copper sulphides. Notably, the enrichment in Fe-Mg carbonate towards the Alpine-Hope Fault intersection seems to represent a region of enhanced permeability possibly related to shallow seismicity, increased regional faulting, footwall variation, strike-slip dip-slip distribution, and/or topographical anomalies (ie saddles). Isotope studies identifying an 'Inboard Fault Gouge Calcite Zone' correlate to values from the Main Divide region at the headwaters of the Arahura River (Browning Pass-Wilberforce Valley) (Becker et aI, 2000). These correlations are supported by rare arsenic anomalies (avg l06 ppm n = 5, Figure 2) found in both regions which suggest that fluids may be interconnected at depth.

Iron from the blast furnace constitutes the starting point in steel production and any increase that can be made in iron production will bring about important repercussions in a long line of processes. Coke constitutes a major item in furnace operation and consumption at the Port Kembla Works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. has been approximately 1,850 lb. per ton of iron produced on ore practice, or 3,000 tons per day.For many years coke quality has been subject to much criticism by furnace operators throughout the world, sometimes with little real grounds. Whatever the merits of previous arguments, and they were no doubt two-sided, the development of bigger furnaces has focused attention on coke strength. At the same time a decrease in the quantity of good quality coking coals available to many plants has stimulated research in this field.Extensive coke research has been carried out overseas, and in Australia the.B.H.P. Organization is now actively doing likewise in its Central Research Laboratories at Shortland near Newcastle, N.S.W., and works research groups at Newcastle and Port Kembla Steelworks. Similar work has been initiated in the beehive coking industry. Such work is in its infancy and this paper will outline the direction of the activities at Port Kembla rather than propound specific solutions.At Port Kembla good quality coking coals are readily available from the IIIawarra coalfield. The seams generally mined for coking are Bulli and Wongawilli and to a much smaller extent Tongarra. Characteristics of these coals appear in Table 1.

Alkali feldspar meggacrysts are commonly found (with aluminous clinopyroxene, kaersutitic amphibole, titanomagnetite, ilmenite and apatite, and more rarely with zircon and corundum) in alkalic basalts and their derivatives as discrete crystals and fragments. They are commonly euhedral or subhedral and may be up to 15 cm in size. Their occurrence has been reported from many localities around the world, e.g., Africa, Antarctica, eastern Australia, eastern China, East Fife (Scotland), Eifel (Germany), Massif Central (France), Mongolia, New Zealand, New Mexico (USA) and Siberia (USSR). These megacrysts are relatively homogeneous and belong to the Na-rich anorthoclase group, although Kutolin and Frolova (1970) called them sanidine due to their monoclinic nature. The majority of megacrysts have a molar orthoclase content (Or%) between 20 and 30 (Fig.1). These anorthoclase megacrysts possess a high degree of disorder, with the structural state belonging to the high albite-high sanidine series (Hoffer and Hoffer, 1973; Chapman, 1976).Published interpretations of the origin of anorthoclase megacrysts fall into the following two categories: either (1) Anorthoclase together with the associated pyroxene and amphibole crystallized from basaltic magmas as phenocrysts (cumulate phases) at high pressure and the present host basaltic rocks are the parent magmas for the anorthoclase megacrysts (Binns,l969; Binns et al. 1970; Kutolin and Frolova, 1970; Hoffer and Hoffer, 1973; Laughlin et al. 1974); or (2) Anorthoclase probably crystallized from a more evolved liquid at relatively lower pressure and was then picked up and carried to the surface by a later

The search for modem casting plant concepts today focuses more and more on the harmonisation and optimisation of overall concept lines to obtain a continuous quality control and reduce the cost of production (Figure 1).
