DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. This paper details geometallurgical investigations undertaken at DeGrussa to date; from feasibility metallurgical test work through to geometallurgical modelling and management practices, as well as reconciliation between observations at feasibility study level and subsequent observations in production.CITATION:Condon, J, Butler, C, Hooper, B and Vass, P, 2013. The rare earth elements (REEs) assay and recovery in leaching processes is being determined using expensive analytical methods, ICP-AES, and ICP-MS. This paper presents a neural network model to predict the effects of operational variables on the lanthanum, cerium, yttrium, neodymium recovery in the leaching of apatite concentrate. The effects of leaching times: ten to 40 min, pulp densities: 30 to 50 per cent, acid concentrations: 20 to 60 per cent and agitation rates: 100 to 200 rpm were investigated and optimised on REEs recovery in laboratory at a leaching temperature of 60¦C. The obtained data, on the laboratory optimisation process were used for training and testing of a neural network. A feed-forward artificial neural network with 4-5-5-1 arrangement, was capable of estimating the REEs leaching recovery. Neural network predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The correlations of R = 1 in training stages, and R =  0.971, 0.952, 0.985 and 0.98 in testing stages were results for Ce, Nd, La and Y recovery predictions respectively and that theses values are considerably acceptable. It was shown that the proposed neural network model accurately reproduces all the effects of operation variables, and can be used in the simulation of a REEs leaching plant.

Soon after the Broken Hill Limited started operations at their Iron and Steel Works at Newcastle, NSW, it was found necessary to install a mill for rolling small merchant bars, rounds, etc.An arrangement of the first mill laid down is shown on Plate 1., Fig. 1. This mill commenced operations on the 18th July, 1917.The feed for this mill was rolled in the existing 18-in. mill and sheared to the lengths required before being delivered to the billet storage yard. The billet storage yard is 90 ft. span, and is served by one 10-ton electric overhead travelling crane. Billets were placed on the billet bed preparatory to being charged into the heating furnace.The heating furnace was of the continuous recuperative with end discharge and had a hearth 40 ft. long by 10 ft. wide. The billets were pushed through the furnace by means of two hydraulic rams, which could either act together and push one row of billets, or act singly and push two rows of billets. This furnace was fired by producer gas from the producers shown on Plate I., Fig. l.The gas was conveyed to the furnace by means of a brick underground flue.

A field trial of the prompt neutron-gamma SIROLOG technique was undertaken by the CSIRO - Division of Geomechanics at Callide Coalfields during July 1989. The trial investigated whether the sonde could reliably be used for the determination of Ash and Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) in coal seams, which had a highly variable iron content. Ten boreholes were logged, being water filled of a nominal diameter of 120 mm. The logging probe employed a 1.6 ¦g 252Cf neutron source and a 51 x 51 mm BGO detector. The source to detector distance was 15 cm. The results from one exploration borehole at the Dunn Creek Mine are discussed in the paper. The rms deviations for ash and iron determination between the neutron-capture predictions of the geophysical logs and the laboratory - chemical assays were 1.9 per cent Ash and 0.88 per cent Fe respectively. Using existing empirical equations which relate iron oxide concentration in coal ash to Initial Deformation Temperature (reducing conditions) at Callide, it may be possible to indirectly determine ash fusion properties as least as accurately, on a more detailed ply-by-ply basis, and more cost competitively than current laboratory techniques allow.

Following a theoretical consideration of the effect of flooding, fluidisation and softening on blast furnace blowing limits, results are presented which show the effect of these parameters on operation. Industrial trials on Oscar Sinigaglia No. 4 BF are reported and results compared with those obtained theoretically and in the laboratory. It is shown that in these trials the furnace operated at levels of fluidisation very much (80-90%) below those theoretically calculated whereas in some cases (high proportion of sinter) actual hot metal output was near the calculated flooding limit. However, it was observed that as the sinter percentage decreases also actual productivity becomes lower than the one caused by flooding. This gap, which increases as other ferrous components (essentially acidic) replace the basic sinter was explained by the softening of the burden under bosh conditions. Softening indices measured on the individual materials yield support to this explanation. Coke rates data show that for approximately every one percent increase in the basic sinter in place of blended sized ore, a coke rate decrease of 1.1 kg/thm results. For acidic pellets this value is 0.6 kg/thm. Results of breakdown and reduction characteristics are also given and their indices compared with actual pt oduction. Measures to improve operations are proposed.

The metals titanium and zirconium and their alloys occupy individually unique positions in the catalogue of metallic materials available for engineering applications. Because of the uniqueness of their usage in the aerospace industry, in the case of titanium, and in the nuclear industry, in the case of zirconium, the except- ional resistance of both the metals to the majority of corrosive media is often overlooked. The cost factor in the application of these more exotic metals has, in the past, been a major considerat- ion in the rejection of titanium and zirconium as constructional materials in areas of usage where their superior corrosion resistance strongly favoured them over more conventional metals and alloys. The cost differential, vis-a-vis austenitic stainless steels, for example, is not a trifling matter, being of the order of 6 : 1, when compared on a weight basis. However, if one considers the cost, for, say, sheet product on an area basis, the ratio is redgced to approximately 3.4:1. If one also takes into account the enhanced performance of the more expensive material and the sub- sequent increase in service life and decrease in plant down-time, the economics of the usage of materials such as titanium becomes much more attractive and, indeed, highly competitive,

Routine, in-pit geological mapping of highwall at Central Queensland Coal Associates (C.O.C.A.) deep strip mines has proved too slow for the increasingly greater highwall lengths which require mapping. This realiz- ation has encouraged the search for faster mapping methods and after trial of ground photographic methods has resulted in the adoption of interpretive mapping off stereo cover, oblique -- aerial photography. This entails using a Cessna 182 light aircraft flying at its slowest speed, the aerial meth- od finally employed consisting of two Vinten, air reconnaissance cameras mounted in parallel and simultaneously taking both colour and black and white photographs of the mine high- wall. The respective 1:500 scale enlargements produced from the 70mm format films combine to present the sharpest resolution attainable under the field conditions pertaining and such information on weathered material as only colour photography can fully render. Total costs for the aerial photography method are estimated to be about the same as those for conventional in-pit mapping. Whilst total costs are comparable, geo- logist's time for mapping a 10 km. length is reduced to less than half that for in-pit mapping (for Stage 1, fully accurate mapping) and accuracy and detail are greatly improved. In order to overcome the statistical limitations imposed by the need to recover density tracers by hand, magnetic density tracers were developed to determine the efficiency of dense medium separators treating porous materials. The tracers were manufactured by extrusion of polypropylene ferrosilicon mixtures and subsequently coated with a distinctive paint to allow hand sorting according to density. Fifteen tracer batches were manufactured in the range 1.61 - 1.94 g/cm3. The tracer densities were determined by a hydrostatic method. The tracer method was applied to the dense medium separation of a Moroccan oil shale in a pilot scale Dyna Whirlpool separator. For each test, about 20,000 tracers were added with the plant feed and subsequently recovered from the products with a dry low intensity magnetic separator. The Tromp curve determined by conventional heavy liquid analysis was displaced towards lower densities compared with that determined by tracers, indicating that the porous shale particles absorb heavy liquid. It is concluded that for porous materials like oil shale and coal, the tracer method gives the most accurate results. In pilot scale testwork the tracer method is also much faster than the conventional heavy liquid analysis, as rather large samples have to be processed by the latter method to ensure Representativeness.

Mechanical agitation is the preferred system for Carbon-in-Pulp processes. Agitator design requires an understanding of the relationships between energy, shear and flow and the nature of shear rates and shear stress distribution in an agitated tank. Laser techniques are useful when studying these phenomena. The alternatives are open impeller agitation or draft tube circulation. Each has advantages and disadvantages but both require careful choice of impeller and system geometry. Overall the draft tube circulator is the more attractive in many cases. Open impeller agitators are designed in accordance with established procedures for mineral slurries taking due account of shear effects in tanks containing carbon. Preferred tank proportions are 1:1. Circulator design methods were developed in the alumina industry before being applied to CIP processes. Optimum draft tube diameter is critical to power requirements. The overall system must be designed as an axial flow pump operating in a closed circuit. Such a system exhibits quite characteristic behaviour which requires an impeller of varying pitch angle and aerofoil section for best stability and efficiency.' Tank height may be 2 or more times diameter. Resuspension of settled solids can be assisted by a series of slots in the draft tube. These slots have the secondary effect of stabilizing hydraulic behaviour and reducing installed power requirements.

This paper first describes the essentials of the slurry shield method and its achievements, then problems encountered during driving tunnels and their countermeasures, and finally shows problems to be solved in the future. The author works at Tekken Construction Co., Ltd. as a director. All the data cited are based on material gained from the slurry shield tunneling works undertaken by the said company. The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the Queensland Mines Department are engaged in integrated regional- and deposit-scale studies in the Burdekin Falls-"Conway" area, about 100km southeast of Charters Towers (Fig. 1). The regional work augments recent mapping in the Mount Coolon area farther south (Hutton et al., in prep.). These studies are aimed at improving understanding of gold mineralisation and its geological setting in the Drurunond Basin and associated rocks. Knowledge of the regional stratigraphic- structural framework and setting of mineralisation has until now been based on investigations dating from the early to mid 1960's (mainly Bowen 1:250 000 Sheet; e.g. Paine et al., 1974; Wyatt et al., 1971), and on regional syntheses (Olgers, 1972; Levingston, 1981). Some recently explored epithermal gold occurrences in the region have been interpreted on the basis of this early work as being hosted by the Late Carboniferous Bulgonunna Volcanics. The objective of our field research was to refine the regional geology, paying particular attention to the Bulgonunna Volcanics. The results summarised here indicate that unnamed Devonian-Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the northern Drummond Basin and mid to late Palaeozoic granitoids are much more extensive, and the Bulgonunna Volcanics much less so, than was previously recognised.

For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

Copper minerals are often associated with gold ores. These create processing problems since cyanide solutions are not selective for gold alone. Copper minerals are also leached by cyanide, and typically each one per cent of `reactive' copper in the ore consumes about 30 kg t 1 cyanide. Once in solution, copper cyanide species create further processing problems as they adsorb onto carbon along with the dicyanoaurate ion. These problems make conventional cyanidation of gold ore uneconomic if the ore contains too much copper. As a result, methods of economically processing gold-copper ores are becoming of increasing importance.One of the more promising methods of treating these ores is by selective leaching of the gold by an ammoniacal cyanide solution, a method first described by Hunt in 1901. This method is already in commercial use in Mauritania, treating copper/gold tailings. In general terms, the addition of I - 2 g U1 ammonia to a standard cyanide leach solution causes a significant increase in gold extraction and decrease in copper extraction. However, early testwork on this system has concluded that the optimal leach conditions are critically dependent on ore composition, and the mechanism is not well understood, making predictions of best conditions impossible.

The existence of metalliferous mineral deposits on the deep-sea floor has been known since manganese nodules were discovered in the Arctic Kara Sea in 1868. Modern exploration to define commercially viable base and precious metal deposits began in the 1970s and gained further momentum in the last decade. High grade deposits have been delineated but investors remain cautious, many considering deep sea mining projects to be riskier than terrestrial projects. This paper compares opportunities and risks presented by terrestrial mining projects with those presented by deep sea mineral deposits (Table 1). The Solwara 1 volcanic-hosted massive Cu-Au-Ag sulphide deposit, the Atlantis II Deeps sedimentary base metal sulphide deposit, and the Mn-Ni-Cu-Co nodule deposits of the north-eastern Pacific Ocean are used as examples. These are advanced deep-sea projects with published Mineral Resource estimates, on the cusp of development. Off-shore diamond mines in Namibia are also considered. These examples provide a basis for comparing exploration and geological uncertainty, the technical risks of proposed mining systems, and the potential environmental and social impacts. Diamonds have been known in Australia for many years, especially in association with alluvial gold and tin occurrences. Exploration for primary sources in the Kimberely area of Western Australia has been carried out since 1968, culminating in the discovery, in 1979, of the Argyle Kimberlite No 1 (AK1) kimberlite pipe. Various techniques have been used in the search for diamonds such as geologic interpretation, aerial photography and Landsat, soil geochenical techniques, geophysics, and stream sediment sampling. Stream sediment sampling, a method developed in South Africa, using the detection of indicator minerals derived from kimberlites in gravel samples, has had wide application and success in Australia. Nevertheless, although Australian diamond bearing kimberlite and lamproite rocks contain some of the classic indicator minerals, their concentrations are generally much lower than in South Africa and Russia. Despite this paucity of indicators, stream sediment sampling is still the best known and most commonly used method of diamond prospecting in Australia. Small samples are treated by hand but larger samples require the use of diamond pans, jigs or heavy media separation plants. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. The final concentrate is passed over a grease table or subjected to x-ray sorting.

Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.1mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80% and mass yields of less than 1% can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. The EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) and the EPA Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting a field-scale technology demonstration of a two-step in situ treatment of the acidic Anchor Hill Pit lake at the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site near Deadwood, South Dakota, USA. The project goal is to develop cost and performance data for the in situ treatment for potential application in long-term water treatment/management activities at the Gilt Edge site, and for potential application at other similar sites. Lime neutralisation of the pit using a Neutra-Mill was accomplished in the spring of 2001, with a resultant lime utilisation efficiency of about 71 per cent, and a typical throughput of about 1 tonne per hour using coarse, pebble quicklime and 1.4 tonnes per hour using finer, ground lime. Redox-mediated biotransformation treatment of the pit has been ongoing since May 2001. As of January 2003, denitrification is complete in the near-surface waters and about 90 per cent complete in the deeper waters. Bacterial sulfate reduction is expected to begin in the near future. This paper describes project activities, results, and lessons-learned to-date as well as future monitoring plans.

he Melbourne City Link project will complete a missing link between two existing major freeways in the Melbourne road network, providing a much needed bypass of the Central Business District for through traffic. The project, which is being financed under a BOOT arrangement with the Victorian State Government, involves the upgrading of significant stretches of existing freeway and the construction of new sections involving viaducts and tunnels. The tunnel sections, which are the focus of this paper, are beneath residential and business areas, the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens and significant sporting facilities where surface construction would be either impossible or unacceptable (reference Figure 1). The shorter, 1.62 km west bound Domain tunnel comprises two cut and cover sections through Olympic Park then the Yarra River, the driven section of 0.68 km length and exits through a common cut and cover section with the east bound tunnel under St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. The longer 3.76 km east bound tunnel commences at the common portal, through cut and cover under St Kilda Road then 2.86 km of driven section before exiting at a cut and cover section at Burnley. The longer Burnley tunnel has an access and ventilation shaft at approximately its mid point.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:
