OUT of the fabulous iron ranges of Michigan?s Upper Peninsula since Pearl Harbor have come go to the steel mills to become tanks, guns, ships, and other weapons for a United Nations' victory. But the contributions to the war effort, as far as Michigan's iron country is concerned, do not stop there. The same men who mine iron ore deep inside the earth also are "mining" on top of the ground, gleaning a harvest of scrap iron and steel that is writing a big chapter in the War Production Board's salvage program. At virtually every mine over an area of a hundred square miles, everyone from the top mine official and straw boss to the man in the dippings is scrap conscious. They know the importance of the ore they mine but they are equally familiar with the importance of iron and steel scrap in war production. The successful job they are doing in salvage is a tribute to the entire Upper Michigan mining industry and to the man who marshaled them into action-John M. Bush, chief of the land department for the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, and for ten years an A.I.M.E. member. Also, this job should be an inspiration to 611 mining. metallurgical, and petroleum communities as to the latent possibilities of organized scrap recovery.

THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler's paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

THE Pyrometer Committee was. formed Sept. 20, 1918, at the suggestion of Dr. H. M. Howe, Chairman of the Engineering Division of the Research Council, for the purpose of developing a pyrometric method suitable for open-hearth steel practice so that the effects of temperature in the various stages of the processes of steel making might be correlated quantitatively with the other factors influencing the production of sound .steel. Current work within the Magnetic Properties Task of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program has indicated that a relation exists between the measured bulk magnetic susceptibility and fracture and lithological characteristics of granitic cores from the Lac du Bonnet batholith in Manitoba. Susceptibility minima correspond to fractured and associated altered rock; uniform background levels coincide with unaltered, non-fractured homogeneous rock; and susceptibility maxima denote the presence of xenoliths and intervals of core containing large and coarse-grained magnetic minerals. The observed variation in bulk susceptibility is largely controlled by the gram size and the relative abundance of iron-titanium oxide minerals of which magnetite is the most important. The magnetic minerals occur as monomineralic grains of magnetite and hematite, as aggregates of magnetite and ilmenite, hematite and ilmenite and as examples of either of these two categories but exhibiting evidence of oxidation and alteration. The degree of alteration of the oxides is commensurate with the alteration of the enclosing rocks. Susceptibility minima characteristic of fractured rock reflect decreases in oxide gram size and abundance, as a result of the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the development of titanium-rich phases. Correlations between boreholes indicate the possibility of continuous fracture zones at 80 m and 150 m from the surface and another one at a greater depth.

A THOROUGHLY modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal R. R. & Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Coverdale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur f the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh seam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with their remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. MINE SUBSTATION The transformer substation is adjacent to a pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies.

COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M'Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M'Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere's operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company's concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.

FELIX E. WORMSER was born in Santa Barbara on Oct. 31,1894, so is one of the youngest members of the Board, only H. D. Wilde t 39) and W. M. Peirce (43) being his juniors. After graduating from the Columbia School of Mines as an E.M. in 1912, he went West and worked for the Snake River Mines, the Baker Mines Co., and the Cornucopia Mines CO., all in Oregon. Then for a year or two he was the youngest U. S. Mineral Surveyor in Oregon. In 1918 he was in the Army from which he was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. Early in 1919 he joined the staff of the Bureau of Mines, at Washington, assisting in compiling reports and in War Minerals Relief work. His acquaintance there with J. E. Spurr led to his joining the staff of the Engineering and Mining Journal as assistant editor in April, 1920. He specialized in market studies and assisted in the compilation of the Journal's metal quotations until June, 1925, when he resigned to engage in active mining examination and consulting' work in the Northwest for H. H. Armstead. Three years later he returned to New York at the time of the formation of the Lead Indus- tries Association, becoming its Secretary and Treasurer, a position that he has since held.

COAL, its acquisition and consumption, has loomed large enough in the lives of many of us at one time or another, not from a technical standpoint, perhaps, but on a utility basis, to keep the house warm and the plant going. The Chairman of the Coal Division was much like many of us in that respect until after his graduation from Northwestern in 1928. Then he went to work as geologist for the Zeigler Coal Co., investigating strip coal possibilities in western Illinois, and also did research in the microscopy of coal at the Illinois Geological Survey. His interest in coal was originated and stimulated by Gilbert H. Cady, of the Illinois Geological Survey. With his advice, and with the co-operation of M. M. Leighton, Survey chief, the results of his research work on the mineral constituents of coal at the Survey were accepted as a thesis for his doctorate which he received from Harvard in 1935. Nine days before the Christmas of 1906, Clayton Garrett Ball was born at Wauconda, Ill. His father was professor of geology at Northwestern until he retired in 1946; retirement didn't lessen his active interest in his profession; he's still teaching geology at the University of Kansas City. THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,' by Barrell on Marysville, Mont.,' and by Gold-schmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,' laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf' made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control" in ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt" fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed. Primary exploration and careful sampling of recognized structural targets were instrumental in outlining the copper ore potential at the Antamina and Tintaya districts, thus proving the benefits and reward of careful geological examinations in this type of deposit. The Magistral District: This district lies in the Province of Pallasca, Department of Ancash, in northern Peru, at 8o 16' S and 77" 47' W. High to medium grade copper orebodies in garnetite, bordering a quartz monzonite stock, are exposed at the bottom of a glaciated valley in the western slope of the Andes at 4250 m (14,000 ft)* elevation.

During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. The Northeast Tripp Slide is one of the larger slope failures that can be attributed to open pit mining. It is a 11.7 million cubic meter (15.3 x l0 6 yd3) wedge failure created by two thick gouge-filled fault zones whose intersection plunges into the Tripp pit at 13°. One unique aspect of this failure is that the slide is now stable despite having moved an estimated 8.5m (28 ft.) towards the pit and having reached a maximum overall velocity of 2lmmlday (0.07 ft/day). The slide started to fail in 1968, accelerated until mining in the slide's toe area was halted in April 1970, then began to decelerate. With the cessation of mining in the toe area, rubblized rock sloughed into the pit bottom which added weight to the failures toe constraints and began the stabilization process. Measurements from a network of survey stations revealed a correlation between the slide's velocity and heavy precipitation. Runoff water accumulating in the tension cracks is believed responsible for this correlation. Moreover, the survey net measurements showed that during the failure's last stage the vertical component of the slide's movement greatly increased. It is proposed that this settling was caused by plastic-like flowage of the clay gouge underlying the failure The fault zone's effective shear strength was estimated by a back- analysis on the wedge's geometry and by performing direct shear tests. The tests, performed on cores taken from samples that were collected on the failure, yielded a residual shear strength of: cohesion 0.61 kg/cm2 (8.7 lb/in2), and a friction angle of 9.6°. This residual shear strength was near1y equal to the back-calculated strength indicating that the controlling fault's effective strength was essentially the same as the residual shear strength of the gouge filling

Instantaneous outbursts of carbon dioxide in coal mines have occurred in Germany only in one part of the Waldenburg-Neurode mining district.' This mining region comprises the northeastern fold of the "Innersudetian" coal basin. The basin (Fig. 1) is in the form of a geologic trough approximately 60 km. (37 miles) long and 30 to 35 km. (19 to 22 miles) broad and is enclosed on three sides by ancient truncated mountain ranges—the Riesengebirge, the Bober-Katzbachgebirge and the Eulenge-birge. Only the southeastern part of the trough is not enclosed by mountains of older rock formation. The floor of the basin before the building up of the coal measures was formed on the western, northwestern and northeastern borders by the material from Archean rocks (gneiss and mica schists); in the northern part over this was deposited the Silurian formation. The carboniferous period is represented both by the Lower ("kulm") and Upper Carboniferous, with an unconformity between the stages; that is, the kulm was tilted up and partly eroded before the Upper Carboniferous was deposited. The kulm is a salt-water formation (with marine fauna) but Upper Carboniferous rocks are nonsaline water deposits, with fresh-water flora only. The Lower Silesian coal measures were thus formed in a lime basin fed by the running water coming down from the mountains. As already indicated, the bottom series of the Upper Carboniferous formation, termed "Waldenburg strata" were laid down unconformably on the Lower Carboniferous. Over the Waldenburg strata there are the "Weisstein strata," an intermediate barren stage without coal beds, 400 to 500 m. (1300 to 1600 ft.) thick. Another unconformity followed, which is overlain by the '(Saarbrucken" series, which contain the upper coal measures, and the ('Ottweil" strata. In the last named, it is only on the southwestern fold that beds of coal are developed.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

A definite field of usefulness has developed for the brine-leaching processes of removing lead from ores and other products, so this paper reviews the developments, both in practice and in research, that have taken place since the publication of two earlier papers on this subject.' Several commercial plants are now in operation and a number of semi-commercial test plants have been operated in an effort to determine the limitations of brine leaching and to compare the results with other forms of treatment. Briefly, the brine leaching of lead depends on the fact that lead chloride and lead sulfate are soluble in saturated sodium-chloride solutions. In dilute brines, the solubility of the lead salt is less than in pure water; but in the strong brines, the solubility is greater than in pure water due, supposedly, to the formation of a double sodium-lead chloride. This is seen in Fig. 1, which shows the results of M. Demassieux2 on the solubility of lead chloride in sodium-chloride solutions of different concentrations and at three temperatures. The curves are not those given by Demassieux but are calculated from his results in order to convert them to units common in metallurgical work. The right-hand branch of each curve shows that if the solution is kept in contact with solid sodium chloride the lead chloride can be almost entirely displaced from solution, but that brines which are saturated with sodium chloride, but are not in contact with the solid salt, have a very high solubility for lead chloride. The diagram gives the analysis of the solution in grams of lead per liter, although the substance actually in solution is lead chloride. The Parral area, a part of the Parral mining district of Southern Chihuahua, is situated in and near the City of Parral, with the most important mine of the district, La Prieta, lying within the city limits. The famous Veta Colorado and Palmilla veins near Villa Escobedo or Minas Nuevas are a few kilometers to the northeast (see Fig. 1). The chief metals produced are silver, lead and zinc, with some copper and gold. This area was one of the earliest to produce metal in Mexico, according to records at Parral, which show that mining started in 1632. In near-by Santa Barbara, however, mining had begun 85 years earlier. It is said that when silver was discovered in the Veta Colorado, the Santa Barbara gold deposits, at that time nearly exhausted, were immediately abandoned for the more profitable silver mines at Minas Nuevas (New Mines) During the post-revolutionary period, 1923-1928, the author made many trips to the Parral district to do mine examination work for several units of the American Smelting and Refining Co. This paper is an abstract of some of the geologic data collected, together with the results of a microscopic study of the ores and rocks—the latter investigation made at the University of Minnesota—and is intended to supplement one recently published. Topography The Parral district lies in the eastern foothills belt of the Sierra Madre Oeste. The area is about evenly divided between fairly flat to rolling plains and mesas on the south and rounded hills to rough precipitous slopes on the west and north. The relief is approximately 550 m. (1800 ft.).
