ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally. Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan," show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision, using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.' However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: 3_____________________ fB = 9.20.vV.vn. (n-1).(n+2)/8 [I] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsym-metric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system of one degree of freedom can be applied: fP = -1/2-vE/m [2] Here fp is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: t, = 2/f = nvm/E [3] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. The microplastic response of a series ofas-quenched Fe-Ni-C martensites has been measured at 77°K. At strains less than JO'3 the flow stress is governed primarily by the transformation-induced dislocation structure of the martensite. Only at strains in excess of 10-3 is the influence of carbon manifested in the flow stress. At these macroscopic strains, typically 10-2, the solid-solution hardening is proportional to (wt pct C)1/3, and, in an alloy containing 0.39 wt pct C, amounts to 50 pct of the flow stress. THE technological significance of high-strength ferrous martensite has stimulated many investigations of its structure and properties. Although our knowledge of the characteristics of martensite has increased immensely, especially with the advent of high-resolution techniques, an understanding of the basic strengthening mechanism still remains elusive. The purpose of the present paper is to consider certain aspects of micro-plastic behavior of Fe-Ni-C martensite which we feel can help to resolve this important problem. Such alloys are particularly suitable for experimental investigation because their compositions can be adjusted to reduce the M, to a temperature low enough essentially to eliminate the diffusion of carbon in the freshly formed martensite.1 The mechanical properties in this condition are of interest inasmuch as they reflect a state that is free of the important but complicating influence of precipitation processes. In this virgin martensite the carbon is distributed as it was inherited from the parent austenite; i.e., it is present interstitially, and gives rise to tetragonality through strain-induced ordering.' In order to determine the source of strength of such alloys, Winchell and Cohen1 investigated the low-temperature macroscopic stress-strain behavior of a series of virgin martensites of increasing carbon content but of common M, temperature (-35°C). They found that the flow stress increased rapidly with carbon content up to 0.4 wt pct; beyond this point the flow stress increased at a much slower rate. It was concluded that martensite is inherently strong. To account quantitatively for the strength of virgin or as- quenched martensite in terms of the role of carbon, Winchell and cohen3 suggested that the carbon atoms, trapped in their original positions by the diffusionless martensite transformation, interfere with dislocation motion according to a model akin to that of Mott and Nabarro. 4 In this treatment, individual carbon atoms are considered to constitute centers of elastic strain and thereby generate an average stress resisting the motion of dislocations throughout the lattice. The additional stress necessary to move dislocations, over and above that necessary for motion in a carbon-free martensite, is given by where L is an effective length of dislocation capable of motion. L was assumed to be limited to the spacing between the twins that are an essential structural element of Fe-Ni-C martensites. They assumtd the spacing to be invariant and of the order of 100A. However, recent work5 has shown that L is variable and can be in excess of 1000Å, so that the assignment of an appropriate value of L is not straightforward. In contrast to the above conclusion that there is an intrinsically high resistance to plastic flow, it has been suggested by Polakowski6 that freshly quenched martensite is in fact "soft" in the sense that dislocations are initially free to move upon application of stress. The high indentation hardness and macroscopic yield stress of ferrous martensites are then a consequence of rapid strain hardening that depends upon carbon in solution. Consistent with this point of view are the results of Beau lieu and Dubé who measured the rate of recovery of internal friction as a function of aging (tempering) temperature in a freshly quenched steel containing 0.90 wt pct C, 0.37 wt pct Mn, 0.1 wt pct Cr, and 0.07 wt pct Ni. The kinetics were clearly consistent with the idea that many dislocations are unpinned in the as-quenched state and that during aging they become progressively pinned by carbon at a rate controlled by carbon diffusion in the body-centered martensite lattice. In order to provide a basis upon which to distinguish between the "hard" and "soft" interpretations indicated above, we have made studies of the initial stages of plastic deformation in Fe-Ni-C martensites similar to those'used by Winchell and Cohen. The surface and subscale oxidation reactions were followed by means of continuous weight-gain and metallographic techniques over the range 1600" to 2200°F (871° to 1204 °C) for up to 400 hr. Full identification of all scale and subscale reaction products was obtained by electron and X-ray diffraction. At or below 1800°F (982°C) a linear rate of reaction (QL = 46.0 kcal per mole) governed the oxidation process, extending for up to 100 hr at 1600°F (871 "C). During linear oxidation the surface scale consisted of an amorphous SiO2 film overgrown with Cr 2O 3 and NiCr204. This initial linear process was followed, and above 1800°F completely replaced, by two successive parabolic rate laws (Qp = 60 and 57 kcal per mole). This parabolic reaction involved the formation of a complex scale consisting of Cr2 O3 and smaller amounts of NiCr2O4. Parabolic oxidation appeared to coincide with the disruplion of the silica film present during linear oxidation and was followed by subscale (internal) oxidation of crystobalite and NiCr2O4. The balance between the subscale and surface oxidation reactions controls the oxidation of this commercial alloy. The amorphous silica film appears to result in the linear rate and diffusion through Cr2O3 is the more likely rate-limiting step during parabolic oxidation. THE oxidation of a multicomponent composition is a complex phenomenon not presently amenable to a rigorous classical interpretation. Nevertheless, even a qualitative understanding of the scaling and subscale reactions that occur in a commercial composition can illuminate the reactions that limit its high-temperature stability in an oxidizing environment. This study of the oxidation of Hastelloy Alloy X presents the first of a series of studies with the above approach in mind. Hastelloy X exhibits one of the best combinations of strength and oxidation resistance available in a wrought, solution-strengthened, nickel-base alloy. Although during long time exposure some precipitation of M6C and M23C8 carbides as well as a complex Laves phase occurs, the amounts are probably small enough to have no appreciable effect on the chemistry of the matrix. Radavich has identified the oxidation products on Hastelloy X oxidized for 5 min to 10 hr at 1115°F as NiO and the NiCr2O4 spinel. Oxidation for 5 to 15 min at 1500°F produced a scale of spinel, NiO, and a rhombohedra1 phase, probably Cr2Os. Sannier et 2. have reported continuous weight-gain data for Hastelloy X at 1650" and 2010°F and internal-oxidation measurements after 150 hr at 2010°F. In addition, much of the data on binary Ni-Cr alloys recently reviewed by Kubaschewski and okins' and Ignatov and Shamgunova4 as well as studies of binary Ni-Mo alloys5 are also pertinent to the oxidation of this composition. EXPERIMENTAL Continuous weight-gain measurements and metallographic measurements of subscale reactions were the main experimental techniques used in this study. X-ray and electron diffraction backed up by a limited amount of electron-microprobe analysis served to characterize the nature of the scale- and subscale-reaction products. Two heats of commercial sheet of the composition given in Table I and identified as A and B were used in the bulk of this study. Internal-oxidation measurements were made on a third heat of material in the form of a 0.5-in.-diam bar. In order to assure homogeneity, all heats were reannealed 4 hr at 2175°F prior to sample preparation. weight-Gain Measurement. All specimens (1.5 by 0.4 by 0.03 in.) were abraded through 600 paper, electropolished, and lightly etched in an alcohol-10 pct HCl solution. An electrolyte of 150 cu cm H,O, 500 cu cm HsPO4 (85 pct conc), and 3 g CrO3 at a current density of 0.9 amp per sq cm or a solution of 10 pct HaW4 in alcohol used at 4 v and 0.3 amp per sq cm was used for electropolishing. The resultant surface exhibited a finish of 3 ± 1 p rms. Continuous weight-gain tests were made at 1600°, 1700°, 1800°, 1900°, 2000", and 2200°F on auer' type balances capable of recording a total weight change of 110 mg with an accuracy of k0.1 mg. All tests were made in air dried to a dew point of -70°F and metered into the 2-in.-diam reaction

Tlze room-temperature tensile fracture oj smooth, round specitnens of three ultrnhigh- strength steels tempered to a wide range of strength levels was studied by means by light and electron-microscopic examination of the fracture surfaces. The fracture of AISI 4340 and 300 M at all the strength levels studied, and H-11, except after tempering at 1200° and 1300°F, occurs in three stages. The initiation of fracture is internal (except in some lightly tcmpeved specimers in which fracture is initiated at surface flaws), and is nucleated largely by separation at metal-second phase intevjaces. TIze voids grow and, coalesce to form a crack. When the crack has reached a sufficienl size, rapid propngutio~z ensues. Failure in this stage of fracture usually occurs by dimpled rupture of inicroshear stefis. In the case of H-11 tempered in the 1125° to 1300°F range, fracture in the shear steps is predominantly by concentrated deformation without void formation. The termination of fracture is usually occomplished by the formation of a shear lib in which fracture occurs by shear dimpled rupture. In the case of H-11 tempered at 1200° and 1300°F, no shear lip was obserued, and the radial elelments extend to the surface—a true termination slage does not exist. ThE tensile fracture of several metals and alloys has been investigated.2-4 In the case of polycrystal-line materials, cup-cone fracture usually results. The mechanism of cup-cone fracture may be summarized as follows.5 Cavities are formed in the necked region of the specimen. They usually are initiated by inclusions or second-phase particles. The cavities extend outwards by means of internal necking, and a crack lying about perpendicular to the length of the specimen is formed in the necked region. Subsequent crack growth occurs by the spread of bands of concentrated plastic deformation inclined at an angle of 30 to 40 deg to the tensile axis. Cavities are formed in the bands of concentrated deformation. The deformation bands zigzag across the bar with the net result that mac-roscopically the crack extends about perpendicular to the specimen axis. The final separation, or cone formation, appears to occur by continued crack propagation along one of the deformation bands out to the surface of the specimen. The micromechanics of the tensile fracture of ultrahigh-strength steels have not been thoroughly investigated. Larson and carr6,7 studied the tensile-fracture surfaces of AISI 4340 with a low-power microscope and reported that three stages of fracture could be observed in general. A centrally located region characterized by circumferential ridges, an annular region characterized by radial surface striations, and a peripheral shear lip were found. It was first pointed out by 1rwin8 that the central region is very probably one of fracture initiation and slow growth, and that the annular, radially striated region is one of rapid crack growth. Presumably the crack grows slowly, assuming roughly a lenticular shape, until it is large enough for the initiation of rapid propagation. In this investigation, it was attempted to determine the fine-scale aspects of the room-temperature tensile fracture of some ultrahigh-strength steels, and to relate the variation in fracture mode with microstructure. The steels studied were AISI 4340, 300M, and H-11 tempered to a wide range of strength levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the steels studied are given in Table I. The steel was received in the form of hot-rolled bar stock 5/8 to 1 in. in diameter from which oversized specimens were machined and heat-treated. The heat treatments employed are given in Table 11. Subsequent to heat treatment, the specimens were ground to the final dimensions and stress-relieved by heating for 1 hr at 350°F (with the exception of the as-quenched steel). Standard smooth round specimens of 0.252-in. diameter and 1-in. gage length were tested in a Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine using a cross-head speed of 0.025 in. per min. The relatively coarse aspects of the fracture topography were determined by light-microscopic examination of sections through the fracture surface of nickel-plated specimens. A direct carbon-replication technique9 was used in the electron-microscopic study of the fracture surfaces. The replicas were examined in the electron microscope, and stereo pairs of electron micrographs were taken. The stereo pairs were then examined using a Wild ST4 Mirror Stereoscope. Carbide and inclusion particles extracted in the replicas were analyzed by selected-area electron diffraction. II) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The mechanical testing data are summarized in Table 111. A. G. Crocker and M. Bevis (Battersea College of Technology)— Richman and Richman and conard17 have recently published the very interesting results of their studies on the plastic deformation of Fe-Ni-C martensites and of an Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. Other work on the range of Fe-Be alloys containing between 16 and 27 at. pct Be has also been reported by Richman." One of the fascinating features of this work is that the materials investigated deform primarily by means of twinning and that several twinning modes are operative in addition to the well-established (112 ) mode of bcc materials The composition planes of these unusual twins were determined using a single-surface analysis and reported as (0131, "{045)" or "{089)", and "{2,3,10)" or "(127)". (It is now thought1' that the "{0,1,13)" habit reported for the Fe-Ni-C alloys'' is more likely to be near "{127)". Although the full twinning elements of these unusual twinning modes could not be determined directly from the experimental results, the authors attempt to deduce the elements by considering twin intersectionslQ and by using the projection technique of Jaswon and Dove.' The basic assumption of their approach is that the (013) habits are truly rational planes but that the other habits are irrational and merely approximated to by the indices quoted above. They thus deduce that the twinning mode describing the (013) habit is either Type I or compound and that the modes describing the other habits are Type 11. This deduction must however be false as all twinning modes in cubic structures obeying the classical orientation relationships of deformation twinning must be compound. Type-I and Type-I1 modes can occur in all of the other crystal systems (indeed in the triclinic system compound modes are not allowed), but in the cubic system only compound modes can arise. This fact, which does not appear to be well-known, fol- lows immediately from the relations between the four twinning elements defining a twinning mode. Thus for a Type-I mode which is uniquely defined by the rational twinning elements K1 = hi and tj2 = vi (i = 1, 2, 3), the Kz qd 771 elements are given by: where the summation convention of the tensor calculus has been adopted. For cubic materials the metrics cij Iand cij reduce to the unit tensors 6ij and 6ij so that we have It is clear from these equations that both ki and ui must take on integral values; i.e., Kz, and ql must be rational, if hi and vi are integers, i.e., if K1 and 77~ are rational. Thus for cubic materials a Type-I mode must degenerate into a compound mode and the same result also arises for Type-II modes. The apparently irrational habits observed by the authors can thus not be explained in terms of Type-I1 twinning if the classical laws of deformation twinning are to be obeyed. An alternative explanation of the irrational habits is that they may arise from twinning modes with four irrational twinning elements. These modes, which do not obey the classical orientation relationships associated with deformation twinning, have been shown to arise as the result of double twinning processes in magnesium,22 but may also describe a simple shear on an irrational plane in an irrational direction. Equations for the heat effects of additions of mixtures of multicomponent phases to a solution have been derived in terms of the enthalpy interaction coefficients. By these equations and the measured composition dependence of the heat effects on addition of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions, values of the enthalpy in-teraction coefficients in tin-rich solutions at 541°K have been obtained. Analysis of these results in terms of the regular solution theory and the quasichemical theory suggests that near the melting point of the solvent association in the solution becomes important. SEVERAL recent papers have discussed the nature of dilute solutions on the basis of measured enthalpy interaction coefficients. l-3 These coefficients contribute to the understanding of the constitution of solutions and can be used for the evaluation of thermo-dynamic data of multicomponent systems. Their experimental determination, however, is laborious. This communication reports values of the enthalpy interaction coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold in liquid tin-rich solutions obtained from the measured heat effects of additions of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions. These measurements were made in the course of the determination of the heats of formation of Ag-Cd solid solutions reported in a concurrent publication.4 THE HEAT EFFECT OF AN ADDITION TO A SOLVENT This analysis is concerned with the addition of a mixture of multicomponent phases from the temperature To to a solvent of known composition at temperature T. A metallographic study of the isothermal products formed between 750° and 285°C was made in an Fe-7.9 wt pct Cr-1.11 wt pct C alloy, and a time-temperature-transformation diagram was determined. The study shows that the austenite decomposes into three different products: pearlite above 540°C, ferrite and carbide between 540° and 300°C, and lenticular bainite below 300°C. No upper bainite forms in this alloy. The results are discussed in terms of carbon diffusion models for upper bainite formation. AUSTENITE transforms into several products depending on the temperature, composition, and rate of cooling, and the various transformation products have been a source of controversy for a long time. Since the classical study of Davenport and ~ain&apos; extensive work has been carried out. The present study concerns the isothermal transformations in an alloy which was used for a detailed investigation of bainite crystallography and provides information supplementary to the work of Lyman and Troiano who studied austenite decomposition in steels containing 1 pct C and varying amounts of chromium. Their work showed that increasing the amount of chromium in high-carbon steels had the effect of depressing the B, temperature and of shifting the TTT curves to longer times and lower temperatures. They further found that if the chromium content is increased in a 1 pct steel to about 9 pct no bainite would form even after a period of 100 days. However, a preliminary investigation by the present authors showed that bainite plates do form in steels containing about 8 pct Cr and 1 pct C. In view of this and some results from a thin-foil electron microscope investigation of the bainite formed in the present alloy: it was considered desirable to investigate the other isothermal products as well. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy used in the present investigation was obtained from a triply vacuum-melted ingot prepared from high-purity materials. Chemical analysis for the alloy verified the composition to be Fe-7.9 wt pct Cr-1.11 wt pct C. Metallographic observations were made on i by i by « in. specimens which were aus-tenitized at 12 50°C for 50 to 60 hr in evacuated quartz capsules and then water-quenched. Since the M, temperature for this alloy is below room temperature, the homogenizing treatment produced a completely austenitic structure consisting of very coarse austenite grains (ASTM #0-1). Several samples of the austenitized specimens were metallographically prepared and observed for any proeutectoid carbide separation. It was found that all the carbon was in solution. The water-quenched specimens were upquenched and given isothermal treatments at temperatures between 285" and 750°C for varying periods in molten salt or lead baths. The specimens were then water-quenched, and those showing less than 5 pct transformation were used for plotting the beginning of the austenite decomposition. To ensure the removal of the disturbed layer, the mechanically prepared specimens were electropolished in a 1:6 HzS04, CHSOH solution for 10 to 15 sec at 20 v. Final polishing was done with a vibratory polisher using 0.05-p alumina. Various etchants including nital, ferric chloride, and hot ferricyanide (Murakami&apos;s reagent) were used to bring out details in the different transformation products. The ferricyanide etch was used whenever the preferential etching of carbides was desired.

The equilibrium Mn + 2 IiCl = MnCl2(g) + H2 has been studied at 1090°C for pure manganese and for Mn-Si alloys. For this reoction a standard free energy of Fo1363, = - 19,700 i 300 col ioas found. Combined with other thermal data, the standard free energy of the reaction Mn(s, ß) + Cl2 = MnCl2(g) was derived: Fo=- 56,140 + 9.78 T log T - 40.10 T For the formation of the various manganese silicides the following free energies were obtained. 5 Mn + 3 Si - M1z5Si3 ?F°1363 = -41,500 i 1500 cal Mn + Si - h.lnSi ?F°1363= -10,000 i 500 cnl Mn + 2 Si = MnSiz ?F°1363= -11,500 ± 500 cal In the search for a method suitable for the study of thermodynamic properties of certain alloy systems, it was found that the heterogeneous equilibrium between the alloy and a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen, and volatile metal chlorides has considerable advantages. In addition to giving thermodynamic information about the alloys, such measurements may be used to derive thermodynamic data for the volatile metal chloride itself. The present paper gives some results which were obtained for manganese silicides and manganous chloride. Similar studies are presently being carried out for the iron silicides. The phase diagram of the Mn-Si system is rather well known,&apos; but no information exists to the authors&apos; knowledge about the thermodynamic properties of manganese silicides or about the chemical activities in molten Mn-Si alloys. At elevated temperature, manganese may react with hydrogen chloride according to the equation: Mn(s, ß ) + 2 HC1 = MnC1, (g ) + H2 [ 1] with the equilibrium constant The value of K, may be determined from measurements of the gas composition in equilibrium with pure manganese. When this value is used in connection with measurements on manganese alloys, the chemical activity of manganese in the alloy may be derived. Initial calculations showed that around 1000" to 1200°C the equilibrium constant K1 has a value of a few thousand, i.e., the reaction is shifted far to the right. In order to study this rather unbalanced gas composition, a flow method was used in two slightly different modifications. For all experiments with manganese silicides and for some experiments with pure manganese the apparatus shown on Fig. 1 was used. A bed of the metal or alloy was placed in a tube furnace. The refractory tube had an internal diameter of 14 mm and the bed was 75 mm long. Electrolytic manganese of high purity and silicon, 99.95 pct Si, were used as raw materials. All alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of the elements in a high frequency induction furnace in argon atmosphere. The melting was done in a silica crucible which was placed inside a graphite shell. The alloys were crushed to - 10 +40 mesh and analyzed chemically. Also, for the pure elements, the same size fraction was used. A controlled gas mixture of purified hydrogen and from 3 to 12 pct HC1 was passed through the bed where it reacted with manganese according to Eq. [I]. KINETICS of the reaction of zirconium with pure oxygen at elevated temperatures have been studied by several workers for periods of time up to 6 hr.1-1 In two cases,3-4 . the experimental values of oxygen uptake, w, as a function of time, t, were best fitted to the parabolic rate law w2 = kPt + constant. In others,3,4 the cubic rate law w3 = kot + constant, showed better agreement. The most recent data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 indicate that the choice between the parabolic and cubic laws for empirical representation of the data will often be arbitrary. This is particularly true if the first few minutes of the reaction with a clean zirconium surface is attributed to a different oxidation mechanism, for deviations from either rate law were found primarily during the initial period. Thus, the kinetics of this reaction have been too uncertain to permit safe extrapolation to oxidation periods of practical interest (many hundreds of hours). The data to be described are of interest, for they indicate that the cubic rate law applies over long oxidation times. The reaction of zirconium with oxygen at 1 atm pressure was followed at 350" and 450°C for 500 and 200 hr, respectively. Abraded test specimens of pure zirconium sheet&apos; 3.0 X 2.0 X 0.012 cm in size were oxidized by the procedure previously described,3 which included periodic cooling to room temperature for weighing. The surfaces were polished to a 4/0 finish using polishing paper wet with kerosene, then wiped with petroleum ether and washed in redistilled acetone. Fig. 1 shows plots of log ? vs log t. Each curve represents the average of duplicate measurements, and deviations from the average were generally less than 3 pet. The cubic rate law (slope = 1/3) is closely followed. The rate constants, 5.2, x 10 -6 and 2.4, X 10- (mg cm-2)3 per hr at 350" and 450 oC, respectively, are plotted as log k, vs 1/T in Fig. 2, together with cubic constants calculated from the data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 for abraded specimens from the same lot of zirconium. Their data refer to runs of 6-hr duration at a pressure of 0.1 atm 0 and under conditions of uninterrupted heating. In spite of these differences, the latter data yield a straight line which appears to apply equally well to the new extended time data. The energy of activation for the oxidation process, calculated from the slope of this line, i.s 38 keal per mole. This may be compared with the value of 47 keal per mole found by Belle and Mallett3 at higher temperatures. It may be concluded tentatively that extrapolation of short-term oxidation data for zirconium to obtain the long-term behavior is best done through the cubic equation ?3 = kpt + constant. Since most of the accidents in coal mining particularly are due to falls of roof and coal, this phase of mining should be attacked with vigor. There is no substitute for discipline and, in this connection, under present conditions it is important that cooperation by the labor organizations be sought and that a spirit of fairness prevail. Frequent and thorough inspection of all active working places should be made.

THE committee in charge of arrangements for the meeting of the Institute in September has com-pleted its program. The headquarters of the meeting will be at the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, and the registration committee will be at the hotel all day on Sunday, Sept. 24, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Monday. On Sunday afternoon, automobiles will be available for sightseeing trips around the city. Monday will be devoted to technical sessions. In the morning, there will be sessions on Mining and on Iron and Steel; in the afternoon, sessions on Mining and Milling. At these sessions, in addition to the papers mentioned in the tentative list printed in August, there will be presented three papers on the geology, mining and milling of the Comstock lode; one on the Aztec mine, Baldy, N. M.; one on the Colombian oil fields; and one on charcoal precipitation of cyanide solutions. The luncheon on that day will be Dutch Treat, for men only, at the Engineers Club. On Monday evening, there will be an informal buffet supper at the home of F. W. Bradley. On Tuesday morning, a party of 50 men will leave for Hetch Hetchy. During the four days of the trip, the party will see the Priest tunnel and earth dam under construction by steam-shovel and hydraulic-fill methods, the Big Creek shaft and tunnel, early intake power plant and tunnels and the Hetch Hetchy dam under construction. For those who remain in San Francisco, Tuesday will be "San Francisco Day." There will be motor trips to the Presidio, Cliff House, Golden Gate Park, and other points of interest, and shopping trips to Chinatown. On Wednesday, "University of California Day," the party will be guided through the university by members of the Mining Association, the affiliated stu-dent society, and will see the Greak Theatre and not-able buildings. Thursday will be "Leland Standford, Jr. University Day." Automobiles will leave the Palace Hotel at 10 a.m., and will return from the university at 4.30 p.m. Friday has been reserved for trips to the Selby Smelter, to Mt. Tamalpais, or to other points of interest. Arrangements will be made to visit the mines or gold dredges in California, if members desire to do so, but such trips must of necessity be considered special trips and arrangements will have to be made to suit the convenience of the individual or party. The Golf Committee will make arrangements for those who wish to play golf.
