INTRODUCTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous, panel-caving, mining system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenite deposit. The mine is located 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The mine surface facilities are located 3,170 m (10,400 feet) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. Milling facilities are 24 km (15 miles) west on the western side of the divide at an elevation of 2,804 m (9,200 feet) above sea level. The ore- body is located approximately 3,000 feet south of the valley under Red Mountain. Access to the ore for men and materials is through a 915 m (3,000-foot) deep, 8.5 m (28-foot) diameter, vertical, concrete-lined, service shaft. Access from the mill is through a 15.5 km (9.6-mile) rail haulage tunnel. The mine is ventilated through an additional intake shaft and two exhaust shafts. Mine production at this time is 27,255 mtpd (30,000 stpd). The mine ventilation system supplies 1,038 cubic meters per second (2.2 million cfm) through approximately 60 miles of drifting or 2.7 tons of air per ton of ore mined. There are 130 fans in the mine in fixed locations and in vent lines with 6,900 connected horsepower in the mine. MINING METHOD AND LAYOUT The orebody is divided vertically into two major zones. The upper zone is the 8100-level production area. The bottom zone is the 7700- level production area which is in the early development stage. The rail haulage level at 7500 feet is common to both production zones. Each mine production zone consists of five associated sublevels. The cave undercut level is 16.8 m (55 feet) above the production level. Two boundary cutoff levels are located 44.2 m (145 feet) and 62.5 m (205 feet) respectively above the production level. The fresh-air level is positioned 15.2 m (50 feet) below the production level, and the exhaust vent level is 19.8 m (65 feet) below the production level. Horizontally, each production zone is divided into three panels each, 224 m (800 feet) wide. These panels are caved from south to north. As the caving in one panel nears completion, caving in the adjacent panel is initiated. Development for the caving panels is continuous so that the sublevels above the production level and the production level itself have a combination of development drifting and production-related activities. UNDERGROUND VENTILATION NETWORK The ventilation system is zoned in the same manner as the orebody itself. One major split of 600 cubic meters per second (1,270,000 cfm) ventilates the 8100-level production zone; one split of 100 cubic meters per second (210,000 cfm) ventilates the development of the 7700- level production zone; and one split of 165 cubic meters per second (350,000 cfm) ventilates the 7500 rail haulage level. The haulage tunnel requires an additional 188 cubic meters per second (400,000 cfm) of air. Development-drift ventilation is accomplished by hanging 1.0 m (3.5-foot) diameter steel ducting in the drifts with 40-horsepower, 0.96 m (38-inch) diameter fans supplying 9.4 cubic meters per second (20.000 cfm). The normal maximum length for these systems is 300 m (1,000 feet). The 8100-level production-area ventilation system is especially suited to a high level of mucking activity confined in a small area. Approximately 93 per cent of the mine's total production is transferred from the drawpoints to ore passes in 10 production drifts. The active area in each drift is 300 m (1,000 feet). Twelve 5-cubic-yard LHD units with Cat turbo- charged 170-horsepower engines are assigned to the area. Under these conditions, more than one LHD is assigned to a particular production drift. Adequate ventilation is maintained by making an air change every 97 m (320 feet) along the production drifts. Fresh air is brought into the production drifts from the fresh-air level through 1.37 m (4.5-foot) diameter raises. Air travels south along the production drift to the ore pass where it is exhausted down the ore pass to the exhaust level. The ore pass is followed by another intake which is followed by an ore-pass exhaust. At the south end of the production area, a series of exhaust fans maintain a southerly air- flow through the production level.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.

INTRODUCTION As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer/winter of 1975 and during the summer of 1978 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses, to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired and to perform off-line optimization. This chapter describes the methodology employed to develop the simulator (1,2) along with typical applications thereof. SECONDARY CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEET Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the Brenda Mines Ltd. secondary crushing plant circuit. The 41,000 tonne coarse ore stockpile(a) is -17.8 cm oversize (3B belt) from two 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (not shown). The screens are fed by 2 conveyor belts operated in series with two 198 cm apron feeders that handle discharge from a 152 cm x 226 cm primary gyratory crusher(520 KW). The primary crusher (not shown) treats up to 2725 tonne/hr of run of mine ore. Minus 1.9 cm undersize from the primary screens (#19 belt), referred to as the primary fines, joins secondary screen undersize (#18 belt) for conveyance to fine ore bins (not shown). Feed from the coarse ore stockpile is transferred by means of vibrating feeders and two 120 cm conveyors (#6 and #7) to transfer belts #8 and #9 (Figure 1). The belts feed two secondary 2.1 m standard heavy duty cone crushers (bl and b2). Each crusher is equipped with a modified coarse mantle liner and a standard coarse bowl liner. Mantle throw is 9.2 cm; nominal close side set is 3.2 cm. Crusher .countershafts (443 rpm) are driven by single 260 KW synchronous motors (710 rpm). Discharge from the secondary cone crushers joins discharge from four 2.1 m tertiary heavy duty shorthead cone crushers (fl, f2, f3 and f4). With the exception of the cavity (modified medium mantle liner and standard coarse bowl liner; close side set is nominal .84 cm) and motor (224 KW), these machines are similar to the secondary crushers. The combined discharge is transferred from a 183 cm conveyor to #14 belt which empties into a 1452 tonne secondary screen surge bin (c). Vibrating feeders beneath the bins feed five 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (dl, d2, d3, d4 and d5) sloped at 200 from the horizontal. PRECIPITATION of M23C6 carbides at grain boundaries in austenitic steels and nickel base superalloys has received considerable attention. Hatwell and Berghezan,1 in a study using carbon extraction replicas, observed that dendritic growth of the M23C6 carbide phase occurred at grain boundaries in austenitic steels. Merrick and Nicholson2 have observed that in thin foils of "Nimonic 75" alloy the precipitation of M23C6 carbide was discontinuous at grain boundaries. Lewis and Hattersley3 have suggested that the type of M23C6 precipitation observed in Ni-Cr austenites represented the early stages of discontinuous precipitation. In a more recent study, Singhal and Martin4 have concluded that grain boundary M23C6 precipitation involves the migration of an austenite grain boundary by a mechanism very similar to that proposed by Tu and Turnbull.5 Tu and Turnbull's suggestion essentially involves grain boundary migration under the driving force arising from the difference between the surface free energies of the opposite sides of the plate. Thus, Singhal and Martin's observation4 implies that the first stage of discontinuous precipitation has taken place and that the grain boundary has provided a diffusion short circuit for the sub-stitutional solute atoms (principally chromium) which assist the preferential growth of the M23C6 plate in contact with the grain boundary. However, no evidence of the characteristic cellular morphology typical of discontinuous precipitation was found in Singhal and Martin's studies. Presumably, this is due to the low volume fraction (i.e., low supersaturation of solute) of the precipitating carbide reported by Singhal and Martin.4 Recently, Raymond6 has studied precipitation of the M23C6 carbide in Incoloy alloy 825 and shown that the growth of this phase is perpendicular to grain boundaries at 1400°F and in the plane of the grain boundary at 1700°F. The former aging condition resulting in discontinuous or "cellular" precipitation. Raymond has suggested an explanation for this behavior based on the relative rates of chromium diffusion by volume and grain boundary diffusion at the two different aging temperatures. In the course of a recent investigation on precipitation behavior in several ' strengthened superalloys, precipitation of M23C6 carbide at grain boundaries was studied. Under conditions of a high degree of supersaturation, the M23C6 carbide precipitates in the discontinuous or cellular morphology in Waspalloy (Ni-18.51 Cr-2.0 Fe-3.53 Mo-1.16 Al-2.78 Ti-0.09 C). This note presents electron microscopy observations of this mode of precipitation and its effect on mechanical properties. Specimens of Waspalloy after "solution" heat treatment at 1950°F show essentially single phase matrix with a few residual particles of "primary" MC carbide. In normal commercial heat treatments, precipitation of Ni3(Al,Ti) ordered fcc r' phase occurs throughout the matrix and M23C6 precipitates as globular particles at the grain boundaries. In these commercial heat treatments the degree of supersaturation during precipitation is low. However, if specimens of Waspalloy are quenched from the solution heat treatment temperature of 1950°F and then aged at an aging temperature where the degree of supersaturation is high, discontinuous precipitation of M23C6 occurs. Using recent thermodynamic data for the carbides and oxides of tantalum, columbium, and vanadium, the stable solid phases aboue 1300°K and at 1 atm CO(g) pressure in each M-C-O system have been determined. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures necessary to obtain these metals by carbothermic reduction under reduced pressures. TANTALUM, columbium, and vanadium react with carbon to form the M,C and MC carbide phases. The M,C carbides have narrow homogeneity ranges, but the MC phases possess considerable ranges of homogeneity.' The free energies of formation of the MC carbides were recently measured, and those of MC and M2Ccarbides have been estimated., (The notations MC and MC denote, respectively, the carbide compositions at the carbon-rich and at the metal-rich boundaries of the homogeneous MC phase.) In this paper, these carbide data are combined with thermodynamic data for the oxides to predict the stable phases in the Ta-C-O, Cb-C-O, and V-C-O systems at specified temperatures and oxygen pressures. M-C-O PHASE DIAGRAMS The solid phases in equilibrium above 1300°K for each M-C-0 system are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Above 1300°K, the vapor would consist entirely of carbon monoxide; and these phase diagrams were obtained by specifying the vapor pressure of CO(g) to be 1 atm. The temperature at which any two solid phases become unstable is specified along the two-phase equilibrium lines in each diagram. To simplify the diagrams, all solid phases in the Ta-C-O and Cb-C-O systems are represented as stoichiometric compounds. However, the homogeneity ranges of VO and VC are indicated, because they form a complete series of solid solutions.3 It also should be noted that the homogeneity range of

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45' north and 116° 30' west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims' end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. The Lornex mine is located in the Highland Valley area of British Columbia, Canada, one of the most,promising districts of low-grade porphyry-type copper mineralization in the world; Lornex is operated by Rio Algom Mines, Limited, a member of the Rio Tinto Zinc Group of London. Exploration from 1965 to 1968 disclosed an ore body of 293 million tons with a grade of 0.43% copper and 0. 14% molybdenum; this led to the decision to construct a 38,000 tpd operation, and production commenced in the fall of 1972. The ore is open-pit mined with 15 cu yd (11 5 m3 shovels, which load 100- and 200 -ton trucks. These trucks dump directly into a 60 in. by 89 in. Allis -Chalmers gyratory from two sides of the 14 ft 6 in. (4.42 m) deep dump pocket and across splitters mounted on the pocket sides. The unlined pocket would hold 1,000 tons level full. The crushedore discharges into a 300-ton surge hopper equipped with an automatic sonic level indicator to prevent over -filling. A 96 in. by 23 ft (2.44 m by 7 m) apron feeder delivers the ore from the surge hopper to a 72 in. (1.83 m) transfer belt equipped with a tramp iron metal detector. The transfer belt discharges to a 60 in. (1. 52 m) conveyor which conveys the ore about 3,000 ft (914 m) to the 475,000 ton ore storage pile located near the concentrator. Four 48 in. (1.22 m) pan feeders transfer the ore to the mill feed conveyors, which in turn supply the two 32 ft by 15 ft (9. 75 m by 4. 57 m) semi-autogenous mills, which easily accept the 10 in. (254 mm) product of the crusher. Each semi- autogenous mill is followed by a secondary ball mill. The unusually large open side setting of the crusher accounts for its 6,300 tph maximum capacity. Concentrator capacity is now 48,000 tpd. Eccentric removal is eased by the design of the door to the crushed ore pocket, which has the cart rails mounted on its outer surface and is lowered to a horizontal position in the pocket by an electric winch. The top of the door rests on wear bar covered concrete piers in the pocket. Another feature is a chute through the floor at the crusher base that extends into the crushed ore pocket. Dust and spills of ore on that floor during crusher repairs are easily swept into the crushed ore pocket. This feature is also used at Bougainville and Palabora and has been added to others after operation has commenced. The design follows the concrete rectangular box concept with four main service and maintenance levels shown in the sectional drawings, although a third additional section has been added at the maintenance

The rates of cementation of pd11 on electropolislzed copper cylinders were studied in aqueous perchloric acid solutions at pdII concentrations from 0.02 to 0.1 mM. The cylinders were rotated at various high speeds to reduce the diffusion layer to a minimum thickness. In 0.1 M HClO4 solutions, the cemented palladium is dense, adherent, and shiny. The rate data indicate that there are two stages in the deposition. In the initial stage, the rate of cementation is first order with respect to the pd11 concentration. The second stage is much slower. The first stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of pd11 ions to the copper surface, and/or chemical reaction at the surface, and the second stage is consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the cop-per surface through the deposit of cemented palladium, out to the main body of solution. In 0.001 M HClO4 solution, only the first stage is evident and the rate is more rapid than at higher acidities. This rate enhancement is attributed to PdOH+ ions that predominate at low acidity and aye more reactive than unhydrolyzed pdII. The deposit is porous and loose. All of the cemented deposits are Pd-Cu alloys rather than pure palladium. Activation energies are 9.5 kcal per mole in 0.1 M HClO4 and 7.4 kcal per mole in 0.001 M HClO4. CEMENTATION or displacement reactions occur between aqueous solutions of metal salts and immersed metals according to the general equation: where M1 is electrochemically the more noble metal. Although these reactions find considerable application in metals recovery processes (e.g., the cementation of copper192 or gold3), in electrorefining processes (e.g., solution purification before electrolysis4,5), and in plating and metal finishing processes,6 few studies have been made of the kinetics of such reactions.7-9 The rates of cementation reactions will depend on one or more of the following factors: a) chemical reactions at the metal-solution interface; b) ionic transport to or away from the interface;'-' and c) the character and adherence of the cemented deposit on the substrate metal,6a,10 because the deposit will inhibit the rate of transport of dissolving ions (M2m+) into the solution. In this investigation, the kinetics of the early stages of cementation were studied to obtain an understanding of the reaction mechanism under conditions in which the deposit was sufficiently thin that its inhibiting effect could be disregarded. To achieve this, very dilute solutions in Mn+ were used. Cementation rates are often fast in the initial stages and transport-contr01led.9 To find conditions under which transport control would shift to chemical control, very high stirring velocities were used to minimize the diffusion-layer thickness. Of the many possible cementation reaction systems, the palladous perchlorate-copper system was chosen for this investigation because it was believed to involve simple ion-for-ion exchange. In addition, there are no interfering side reactions, such as the reduction of hydrogen ions, and anion effects are usually absent in perchlorate solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Reagent-grade chemicals and redistilled water were used in all experiments. Palladous perchlorate stock solutions (0.02 M) were prepared by dissolving 99.5 pct Pd sponge (Johnson Matthey and Mallory Ltd.) in concentrated nitric acid, adding concentrated perchloric acid, evaporating twice slowly (to prevent PdO precipitation) to a small volume, and diluting in a volumetric flask. To prevent gradual hydrolysis of PdII, the stock solutions were made 0.4 M in HC104. Tests for pdIV (Ref. 11) and C1- were negative. Any design of a mine roof in bedded deposits which ignores differential deflections at the supports can quickly lead to dangerous overstressing. As illustrated by the typical case presented on page 1029, if one support deflects only 0.1 in. more than its neighbor, stresses 50 pct higher than anticipated will result. Previous studies1-3 have assumed that the mine roof acts like a beam clamped at both ends, with no deflection or slope' at the supports (Fig. 1). Essentially this assumes:5* ?A = ?, = ?b and dA = dB = 0. However, a host of conditions can cause differential sag or deflection at one support, and even an apparently trivial deviation can have major consequences in the beam: variations in spacing, size, and material of supports; local settlement due to floor heaving or lower mine openings; non-uniformity in wedging or bolt tensioning.8 In one particular instance concrete pillars, poured in place, shrank away from the roof upon setting.' When understood and controlled, differential sag becomes a definite advantage, permitting the transfer of loads from one support to another. Where one support is a bolt or prop and the other a pillar or rib, the load on the former can be reduced while the load on the pillar or rib is increased. This means two things: 1) savings can be effected by using smaller artificial supports such as props and bolts and 2) loads can be increased in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. In this last respect, another factor underlying coal bumps becomes understandable. The design of a mine roof by beam theory assumes that when a bedded formation is homogeneous, iso-tropic, and elastic, it will act like a uniformly loaded beam, fixed or clamped at both ends,6 s in Fig. 1.'" These are important assumptions. The uniform load is the weight of the beam itself or its body load. MCMORRIS III INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Nether- lands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War I1 in the lab- oratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15 tph (13.6 mt) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of fie1 in London. The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive base metal sulphide deposit with surface dimensions of 168 m by 670 m. The steeply dipping ore- body has been evaluated to a depth of 1 524 m. To date, the mining of the orebody has been divided into three stages. The first stage of mining was an open pit operation which supplied ore from 1966 until 1977 when a depth of 219 m was reached at the widest or north end of the orebody. The second stage of mining, called No.1 Mine, was the development of an underground mine to replace the pit and recover the ore from the floor of the pit to a depth of 792 m. Development of the underground mine started in 1969. Full production of 273 000 tonnes per month was attained in 1977. The third stage of mining called No.2 Mine, was initiated to accommodate a production expansion and included the development of a second underground mining operation to recover the ore from the bottom of No.1 Mine, i.e. the 2600 level; to a depth as yet undetermined but most likely the 4600 foot level. Development of the No.2 Mine began in 1974. Full production of 91 000 tonnes per month will be achieved in 1982. The choice of the 2800 level as the partition between the two underground mines was based on the following factors: The 2600 level is the lowest level which can conveniently be mined through the No.1 Mine crusher on the 2800 level. Development and trial stoping methods for mining at depth could be evaluated in the 2600 to 2800 block utilizing the existing hoisting facilities of No.1 Mine. Early development of the ore in the 2600 to 2800 block would provide additional mill feed sooner than could be achieved by developing from No.2 Shaft. The underground mining plan then is to mine from the pit floor down to the 2600 foot level and at the same time mine from the 2800 level down to at least the 4600 foot level. PLANNING The Kidd Creek operations are designed to follow a logical mining sequence. The grade of ore supplied to the concentrator is the result of following the mining plan. The philosophy of mining has been to mine downward in horizontal slices. In the case of No.1 Mine the slices are 122 m thick while in No.2 Mine the slices will be 183 m thick. The point of this approach is to mine the pillars immediately after creating them rather than allowing them to stand, deteriorate and generate uncontrollable situations. Two types of ore are handled separately to optimize recoverable values in concentrates. The 'A' type ore is a copper zinc ore with some silver and little lead. The 'C' type ore is a zinc silver ore with some lead and copper
