The annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary was held on February 19, at 10 a. m. The president, Mrs. Sidney Jennings, said in her greeting "it is a matter of congratulation that during the past year when the demands upon women for work of all kinds has been so large our membership has grown from the 50 enrolled at the first meeting a year ago to over 300 today. Some women, when. asked to join the organization, say that they are doing so much work in other ways that they have no time for work in a new organization, but the director for Canada struck the right note in her report when she told us of the splendid work the wives of mining engineers are doing in Canada, as individuals and as leaders and members of various organizations doing patriotic work. We do not want to divert such women from the work they are now doing, but we do want them to enroll as members of the Woman's Auxiliary and let us know what they are doing, that they play give inspiration to others." Reports were made by the directors of the following sections: Canada, Chicago, Colorado, Columbia, New York, Puget Sound and St. Louis, in some of which sections excellent progress has been made in food conservation, foreign war relief, including the adoption of fatherless French children, and in work for our own engineering regiments. These reports were read, accepted, and placed on file. The reports of the corresponding secretary, of the recording secretary, and of the treasurer, were read, accepted, and placed on file. Various amendments to the Constitution were proposed and accepted, and copies of the Constitution, as amended, will be mailed to all the members of the Woman's Auxiliary.

THE program of government drilling, conducted jointly by the U. S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, has demonstrated the presence in Texas and New Mexico of potash-bearing beds of considerable importance. Information regarding the ex- tent and location of the potash deposits as presented at the non-metallic sessions was of great interest to many engineers. These subjects will be covered in greater detail in later paragraphs. The first session, with about 50 in attendance, convened at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18, with Oliver Bowles, chair- man of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, pre- siding. The first paper was on "Soapstone Mining In Virginia," presented by C. W. Ryan of Lynchburg, Va. The nature and extent of the soapstone deposits of Nelson County were described in some detail. In origin, the soapstone is undoubtedly related to a basic peridotite rock though its mode of formation is some- what uncertain. This main soapstone deposit occurs in three veins, the western, middle, and eastern, the middle vein being of greatest economic importance. Methods of stripping, quarrying and milling the rock were described and the uses of soapstone were enum- erated. In discussing this paper, C. P. Berkey, of Co- lumbia University strongly favored the theory of igneous origin of the soapstone and the need for further detailed geological study. J. L. Gillson of Cambridge, Mass., stated that the Vermont and New York talc deposits were always associated with characteristic minerals, such as, a chlorite of one particular variety, siderite, amphibole, magnetite, and biotite. C. H. Behre of Cincinnati, Ohio, raised the question of parallelism in the soapstone structure and Mr. Ryan stated that such parallelism was in evidence in some parts of the deposits. H. A. Wheeler of St. Louis, Mo., also took 'part in the discussion.

For more than a decade the Pacific Northwest has been a frontier of successful porphyry copper-molybdenum exploration. This vast region (about 2100 miles long, 350-500 miles wide) occupies a geologically complex mobile tectonic belt. It parallels the Western Cordillera from northern California-Nevada to southern Alaska-Yukon Territory, and west from the northern Rocky Mountain-Tintina Trenches to the Pacific margin. Right lateral displacement has occurred along major transcurrent faults that are sub parallel to the region and the transform Fairweather-Queen Charlotte fault zone separates the North American continental plate from the Pacific oceanic plate. Porphyry-type deposits are widespread, but producing mines are restricted to south and central British Columbia. Size and grade are variable (25 to +300 mt; 0.18 to 0.65% Cu with 0.014 to 0.049% MoS2; 0.14 to 0.28% MoS,) and secondary enrichment is normally unimportant. Metallization is genetically and spatially related to late quartz-feldspar porphyries that are within, marginal, or satellitic to composite batholithic intrusions. Radiometric ages of the plutons range from Miocene to Triassic-Jurassic (18 to 217 m.y. [million year] ). Country rocks are typically eugeosynclinal metasedimentary and metavolcanic assemblages of Permian to Jurassic age. Several of the older (pre-Late Cretaceous) deposits formed in submarine island arc environments and they may be genetically related to occurrences of volcanogenic sulfides in the greenstone country rocks. Deposition of bornite-chalcopyrite-molybdenite ores is controlled by contacts, breccias, and fault-fracture zones. Associated hydrothermal gangue minerals include biotite, orthoclase, sericite, kaolinite, quartz, anhydrite, and tourmaline. Isotopic data suggest a deep source for ore, gangue, and plutonic host rocks. Significant exploration features include porphyries, dike swarms, breccias, potassic alteration, barren quartz cores, gossans, and fringing halos of pyrite and propylitic alteration.

Some years ago, A. M. Gaudin and one of the authors published a paper showing removal of tar acids from solution by sulfides preferentially as compared to gangues (specifically by galena as compared to quartz).' The underlying phenomenon was classed as adsorption, and the paper went on to develop the general thesis that so far as water-soluble frothing and collecting agents in flotation are concerned, the phenomenon of adsorption is one of controlling importance. Adsorption was defined in that paper as "a process of rearrangement of a system, which results in establishing a difference in concentration, as between the interfacial layers and the bulk of the phases, of a substance or substances initially uniformly dispersed in one or several of the phases." The paper went on to develop the relation between adsorption and surface cnergy according to Gibbs' equation (which may be thrown into the form U/c = KdT/dc, where U = excess concentration in surface layer, c = concentration, T = surface tension, and K is a constant), and pointed out that, according to this equation, degree of adsorption and change in surface tension vary directly. The present paper offers a somewhat different definition for the term adsorption; and sets up, in sweeping terms, the generalization that simple chemical reaction underlies the functioning of the flotation reagents which control mineral collection, when these reagents are soluble in and act from solution in the water of the pulp. Adsorption According to the modified definition, adsorption means concentration at an interface between different phases in a heterogeneous system (thus far the definition runs as before), by the action of some mechanism, of which nothing is properly implied in the word, and concerning which the user of the word is probably in entire ignorance. An examination of the Pachucal and El Oro districts in July, 1920, although cursory and incomplete, disclosed facts of more than passing interest to the student of ore deposits; and inasmuch as the literature on these districts is limited and some of their features are little understood, a brief account may prove valuable as reconnaissance observations to be amplified by more thorough and competent observers in the future. Where no complete monograph of important mining camps has been published a partial presentation of the data is often useful, as it sometimes leads to fuller and more accurate descriptions, by stimulating discussion. The following notes are presented with the consent of A. F. Main, managing director of the El Oro Mining and Railway Co., whose fund of information and wide acquaintance with both districts alone made it possible to cover so much ground in a short time. I have also to acknowledge gratefully the aid of C. A. Lantz and D. S. Calland of the Santa Gertrudis and Real del Monte companies, respectively, in connection with permission to inspect geological features of interest in their mines. Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mex. This mining camp has been described by Ezequiel Ordonez2 and by A. F. J. Bordeaux.3 Reported to have been discovered in 1522, it has produced silver valued at between $250,000,000 and $375,000,000. Subsequent to the discovery here, by B. de Medina, of the patio process. in 1557, its production was increased, and now, using cyanidation, the output of the camp is nearly one-sixth of the production of the world. Topography and Climate The Pachuca district consists of a series of mountains and valleys, the minor features of which extend in an easterly and westerly direction and reach elevations of 8000 to 10,000 ft. There are comparatively few accurate data on the melting-or the freezing-point temperature of metallurgical slags, or on related physical phenomena, such as fluidity near the melting-point, specific heat, latent heat, etc. With the exception of the work of H. 0. Hofman,' and some older work by R. Akerman, P. Gredt, and H. M. Howe, no information is available that is of direct interest to the metallurgist. Hofman's valuable work is the only one that refers to slags produced in the metallurgy of copper and lead. The classic work of J. H. L. Vogt,2 who views slags from the standpoint of physical mixtures (solutions in which the entities are minerals), has opened up a new field in the study of slags, and has placed the investigation of such properties as melting-temperatures, etc., on a rational basis. The recent work of A. L. Day, E. T. Allen, and W. I?. White, of the Carnegie Institution, at Washington, and of European investigators3 on certain systems of silicate minerals confirms the value of the investigation of silicate series from this standpoint, and it is my aim to apply this method to metallurgical slags, in order to gain exact data of value in metallurgy. The work recorded in the present paper is the result of an investigation of reverberatory-furnace slags made for a Western smelting company to determine exactly the influence of change in composition, within comparatively narrow limits, on the melting-point. For a general discussion concerning the mineralogical character of slags and the principles on which this investigation is based, reference should be made to other work: for the subject is too large to be stated in this paper, except very briefly in the following outline:

The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

In the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to " qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were engaged on both sides; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. ON FEBRUARY 4, 1952, the Phelps Dodge Corporation signed Contract GS-00P(D)-12068 with the United States Government. This interesting document dealt with the "Bisbee East" project as part of the Government's program to increase the supply of needed copper by encouraging private enterprise to expand production. The ore deposit involved was a relatively small body of low-grade ore lying east of the remnants of the old Sacramento Hill deposit that was exploited with indifferent success from 1923 to 1931, as related in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS. Planning for the entire enterprise had been directed from the start by Harrison M. Lavender, who in 1945, succeeded Percy G. Beckett as vice-president and general manager for all of Phelps Dodge's Western mines and smelters. The untimely death of Mr. Lavender in 1952 prevented him from seeing his plans brought to fruition; but in his honor the mine was fit- tingly named "The Lavender Pit" and was so dedicated on August 7, 1954. The Copper Queen Branch operates under- ground mines at Bisbee (production in 1955 was 28,000 tons) ; but, as this volume is concerned only with Porphyry operations, this chapter deals only with the Lavender Pit project, or as the Government knows it, Bisbee East. My reason for going into some detail regarding the floor-price contract is that it is fairly typical of contracts made by the Government in connection with a half-dozen other copper-expansion projects; and, incidentally, with various projects involving other strategic metals. Phelps Dodge did not seek a loan or other financial aid. The only encouragement asked consisted of (a) the privilege of a five-year write-off (commonly called rapid tax amortization)

It is eight years since I have been connected actively with metallography, but in this time I have been learning something about colloid chemistry, which may be considered as the chemistry of bubbles, drops, grains, filaments, and films, all things in which at least one dimension is very small or in which the surface is large relatively to the mass. Films, of course, suggest to the metallographist Beilby's amorphous film theory, about which I am going to speak for a while, though probably not in the way you expect. I come to bury Beilby, not to praise him. So far as I can judge from looking over the literature hastily, there are two schools in the United States, those who accept Beilby's theory willingly and those who accept it unwillingly. Hoytl says that: At present there seem to be two schools in metallography, one which has adopted the amorphous-phase theory for the explanation of the effect of cold work, mechanical deformation, etc., and one which is not ready at present to adopt this theory. It seems to me that this theory can at least be used as a convenient means of explaining various facts that are demonstrable in the laboratory but the presence of this amorphous material, through our lack of experimental means, we are unable to prove. That we have failed in this direction should not necessarily hinder us from using a theory as workable as this. Mathewson2 says: I have come reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties with temperature, etc. If Mathewson represents one extreme, with Hoyt perhaps occupying a middle ground, H. M. Howe3 may be cited as one of the enthusiastic supporters of Beilby's amorphous theory. It is, says Howe:

THE 142D MEETING of the Institute is rapidly shaping up with splendid prospects of a strong technical program and the lighter side of this annual occasion amply provided for. The date is February 20 to 23. The technical sessions will be held in the Engineering Societies building; the smoker-dinner, the informal dance, and the annual reception and dinner, at the Commodore Hotel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The news to date on the technical side is as follows: Mining Methods-Subsidence The Mining Methods Committee has prepared an interesting program which will be divided into two sessions to be held early in the week. At the first there will be papers on mining methods and development, including a description of the "Sinking and Equipment of No. 2 Shaft at Minas de Matahambre," by Dudley D. Homer and R. H. Cromwell. They describe in considerable detail the equipment used and the practice followed in sinking this important shaft, giving detailed costs and performance figures. Hoist¬ing ?arrangements and mining practice at the "Red Ore Mines of the Woodward Iron Co. at Bessemer, Ala.," are described by Tenny C. DeSollar, superintendent of mines, in a second paper. At this session of the Mining Methods Committee, H. M. Roche and R. E. Crockett, of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite Mining and Milling Methods, will present their paper, "Iron Ore Mining at the Scrub Oak Mine." This mine is in the highlands of New Jersey about 40 miles west of New York City. Prof. Robert K. Warner of Yale University will present a paper on "The Selection of a Mining System," which should have an interesting discussion. Pierre R. Hines, of Portland, Ore., will present, with stereopticon slides, his paper on "The Owyhee Tunnels, U. S. Reclamation Project, Owyhee, Oregon," describing one of the recent irrigation undertakings.

Belle Isle, located in the low sea marshes near Atchafalaya Bay, is the southeasternmost of the famous Five Salt Islands of Louisiana. Rising about 80 ft. (24 m.) above the level of the surrounding marsh and being some 800 acres (323 ha.) in extent, it constitutes a striking landmark on the low Gulf coast, and since the eighteenth century, when it played an important part in the operation of the buccaneers, it has been intermittently frequented by man. In 1897, the writer discovered the great mass of salt that underlies the island and shortly afterward published a brief account of the geology of Belle Isle and the neighboring salt islands.' In that paper he described principally the salt, but pointed out also the occurrence of petroleum and of sulphur in the strata above the salt. Since that time the island has been extensively explored by the drill, and the developments up to 1908 have been described by Veatch2 and Harris13 and Knapp.4 The writer's early conclusions as to the probable presence of sulphur in considerable quantity have been confirmed by the later drilling, some of the wells having found quantities of gas containing hydrogen sulphide and a number of sulphur-bearing strata as well. Under the stimulus of the present keen demand for sulphur for war purposes, a syndicate of New York capitalists was recently formed to explore the sulphur resources of the island in more detail. Under the writer's direction, six wells were drilled for this syndicate during the winter of 1916-17: The present paper presents briefly the results of this work and sums up the present knowledge of the geology of this highly interesting locality.

Permission to present this paper at the February, 1915, meeting of the Montana Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers was liberally granted by W. A. Clark, Jr., President-and General Manager of the Timber Butte Milling Co., and by the representative of the Minerals Separation Co. For the many courtesies shown the writer on his visits to the mill and for information supplied, he is indebted to all the officers of these companies, especially to W. N. Rossberg, W. D. Mangam, Hamilton Cooke, Jr., T. M. Owen, T. C. Wilson, R. McGillivary, L. L. Quigley, C. Bartzen and others. The writer takes this opportunity to herewith express to them his appreciation and sincere thanks. Location of Mine and Mill The concentrator of the Timber Butte Milling Co. was built to treat the ore mined at the Elm Orlu mine of the Elm Orlu Mining Co., which carries zinc and lead in sphalerite and galena; copper in bornite, chal-cocite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite; and gold and silver either free or chemically combined with the sulphides of the base metals. The gangue is chiefly quartz, barite, fluorite, rhodonite, and rhodocrosite. The iron in the ore occurs as irqn pyrites. The Elm Orlu mine is situated in Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont., near the northern border of what is locally known as the Butte sulphide-copper belt, about one mile north of the Anaconda mine, and adjoining the Black Rock zinc mine of the Butte & Superior Co. on the southwest. The mill is on the northern slope of Timber Butte, a prominent topographical landmark in the Butte district. This site permits to a large extent the gravity system of ore flow; it presents a convenient and extensive area for a tailings pond; and it is comparatively near to the source of water supply and to existing railroads.

A discussion of the paper published in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 20, March, 1908, pp. 227 to 237, and No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 615 to 620. PROF. HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Hibbard's definition of steel would be the best yet offered were it not for its one defect, the vagueness or equivocalness of "fusion-process." Puddling is surely in one sense a fusion-process, and so are the charcoal-hearth or knobbling-processes. But what he says suggests the following definition, which seems to me a good one: " Steel: any variety of iron which is usefully malleable at least at some one temperature, and is either cast when molten into a malleable mass, or if not so cast can be much hardened by sudden cooling." It is not necessary in a definition that quantitative bounds should be set up, for instance, that the exact height at which dwarf apple-trees cease and standards begin, or at which hills cease and mountains begin, should be stated. These quantitative measures are proper for specifications and contracts, but are not necessary for purposes such as the present. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J. During the past few years frequent reference has been made to a certain type of iron known generally as "bad iron," "dirty iron," etc., both by steelmakers and producers of iron castings.' Open-hearth operators have claimed that such iron was entirely within the specified limits as to ordinary analysis but it was difficult to make good steel from it. It has been suggested that unreduced material in the iron is responsible, also that most trouble is experienced with the iron when the blast furnace is delivering a product whose analysis is more or less variable. Other reasons suggested are the use of scrap or borings, unsintered flue dust in the burden, a cold hearth, too high a proportion of unsuitable grade of ore, or the form of the carbon in the iron. Accordingly, a subcommittee was appoint at the fall meeting of the Open-hearth Committee of the Americ m Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers held in Pittsburgh in October, 1926, to investigate the reasons for the occurrence of this bad iron and suggest methods for preventing its appearance. This committee enlisted the cooperation of the U. S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at Pittsburgh in undertaking a study of pig-iron quality as affecting the open hearth. WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

F. M. Lewis—I believe that density recorders are a prerequisite to all well operated ore concentrators. Well designed density instruments are very accurate and give an excellent record of the steadiness of the operation. Controlling the density of a pulp with an instrument, as described by Mr. Bean, is new and the experiences in developing this controller at the American Cyanimid Co.'s Mineral Dressing Laboratory are very interesting and should be extremely helpful to others who are planning on designing or installing controlling density instruments. Instruments for recording the density of the classifier overflow or flotation feed are rather common in ore concentrators, but there are a number of profitable uses for these instruments that are not too well known. Density recorders with bubble tubes submerged to different depth in a classifier pool give an excellent record of the classifier operation. The loading and unloading of the machine, that is so easily masked in the density of the overflow, can be easily recorded if the instrument is installed at some depth in the classifier pool. On some occasions, two instruments with bubble tubes at different depths give a more candid picture of the irregularities in the classifier operation. When cleaner machines are operated in closed circuit with roughers, a record of the density of the cleaner tails will indicate the circulating load in the circuit and is very helpful in coordinating different operators, because quite often the circulating load will be increasing for some time before the analyses of the products will change. Density recorders are used to record the variations in the dilution of the underflow from thickening tanks and in at least one plant the instrument controls the underflow.
