IN view of what has happened in - the past three years, it seems incredible that industrial corporations continue to write to engineering and mines schools for "promising members of the graduating class," or, indeed, that they even send representatives to the colleges to interview engineering graduates. Certainly, by this time, every company should be aware of the fact that recent engineering graduates are almost nonexistent and the number is not likely to increase within the next several years. At the February, 1945, annual meeting of the Local Section delegates of the A.I.M.E. in New York, W. B. Plank, professor of mining engineering at Lafayette College, summarized well the situation of the colleges by titling his talk "The Lost Generation of Engineers."

H. M. ROBERTS, Minneapolis, Minn. (communication to the Secretary*). -The rifling of drill cores is a frequent source of interest to men engaged in diamond drilling. Previous to the appearance of Dr. Crane's paper, there has been little record of connected observation or rigid speculation as applied to the cause of rifling. Replying to one of Dr. Crane's letters of inquiry, I ventured my opinion that the cause of rifling was a complex problem in physics, which I had not attempted to solve up to that time, except to ascribe it to the general cause of rotation and vibration of the rods. DURING the morning session," on Feb. 17, papers were presented and discussed regarding a recent wire saw installation, cement rock quarry operations, hydration factors in gypsum deposits and the status of the phosphate industry of the West. Oliver Bolvles presided and there were about twenty-five members present. W. M. Weigel's paper (T. P. 262), "The Application of the Wire Saw in Marble Quarrying," was read by the author. He described the recent installation of the St. Clair Marble Co., near Guion, Ark. Since the use of the wire saw for quarrying is comparatively new and the fact that it has been almost entirely limited to slate quarries heretofore, ?he description and data given in this paper were of much interest.

F A. THOMSON, president of the Montana School of Mines, gave an interesting talk on mining schools of the past, present and his ideas of the future before a recent meeting of the Montana Section of the A. I. M. E. He covered the history .of the various mining schools and com- pared the three main types of schools; those attached to or forming part of an endowed college or university such, for example, as' the Columbia School of Mines, the Mining Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Mining Department of Stanford University. These resemble in a general way the second class, those attached to the state universities and colleges. The schools of this general type have had varied success.

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

The Copper Canyon CIL-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

Y., on July 14, 1887-and was educated in New York City-Columbia, E.M., 1916 he has spent his entire professional life in the West, and is still there, as assistant general manager of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., in Arizona. His first jobs were as miner and surveyor for the Utah Consolidated Mining Co., at Bingham, where he worked under A. S. Winther, now general manager of Inspiration's adjoining big neighbor, the Miami Copper Co. Laboratory prepared clay-quartz sand samples and fault gouge from an open pit slope undergoing plane-type failure were tested in the laboratory to determine potential mining applications of electroosmotic stabilization and to provide a better understanding of electrochemical hardening. Experiments with very low current densities and free access of electrolytes to both anode and cathode showed an increase in cohesion. Cohesion in a fault gouge increased by 9.3 to 113%, depending on location with respect to the electrodes. For this, power consumption was equivalent to 0.727 watt-hr per cu ft (25.69 watt-hr per cu m). Regions of electrochemical hardening were determined by pH and the anolyte used. Electroosmotic stabilization appears as a reasonable solution to some types of mining problems.

WITH a membership in the Institute of 32 years behind him, Chester Alan Fulton became an A.I.M.E. Director last month. In 1937 he served as Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division. Mr. Fulton was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 18, 1853, and at the age of 22 graduated from the Columbia School of Mines. His first job was as assayer for the Standard Smelting Co., Rapid City, S. D., but he soon left to become shift boss in the cyanide plant of the Peregrina Mining & Milling Co., Guanajuato, Mexico. G. M. TAYLOR,* Colorado Springs, Colo.-I do not think the plan outlined in this paper would work at Cripple Creek. Most of our men have had a pretty good education. The Cripple Creek district is a lessee district-I do not think there is one urine operating in Cripple Creek to-day that does not have the leasing system. We have as many men leasing on our property as we have mining and every man who is working for wages is looking for a lease-every man has mined for him-self, he has been his own boss on a lease, either on our own property or on some of the other properties, and it makes a different class of employees.

An experiment substituting pneumatic crawler drills for large-diameter rotary rigs in overburden stripping operations has indicated significant bit cost savings for Perry and Hylton Coal Co., Beckley, W. Va. The test was conducted in the Egeria Mountains (part of the Appalachian Range), where about 30 m (100 ft) of overburden consisting of hard, seamy sandstone and shale must be removed to recover a 560-mm (22-in.) vein. Perry and Hylton operates ten surface mines and is presently developing three more for start-up in the near future. The company follows a progressive policy toward ecological concerns, incorporating a self-imposed systematic mining and reclamation program for mined lands which leaves the landscape in a suitable condition for further development by local communities.

In Europe, water infusion is used widely to reduce generation of respirable dust during mining. Its use in the US is limited to a few plow operations in the deeper parts of the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed. The technology for infusing water into retreating longwalls is described and results of a recent Bureau test in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed demonstrated dust reductions ranging from 47% to 64%. Because water infusion increases moisture content of the coalbed, face air velocities in excess of 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) are possible, further diluting dust levels before dust entrainment occurs. An economic analysis shows a 23% reduction in operating costs when coal production is increased by changing from unidirectional to bidirectional mining with water infusion.

Is the value of rock sealant on radon control destroyed by changes in barometric pressure? While an article by Dr. Gerald Schroeder in the June 1977 issue of MINING ENGINEERING suggests this, it should be noted this is not necessarily true as the ensuing discussion reveals. Before analyzing the data leading to Dr. Schroeder's conclusions, some comments on their source are needed. The figures were collected during a 1973 US Bureau of Mines test of radon barrier coatings in the Dakota uranium mine near Grants, N.M. Results of that test were reported by Franklin, et al 3,4 in 1975. The mine is essentially dry and ore occurrence is within a lightly cemented, porous medium-to coarse-grained sandstone of high permeability and radon emanation rate.

The following corrections are thus made necessary: On page 272, line 13 should read, "respectively 12 and 4 feet" (instead of 12 and 14). On the same page, line 6 from the bottom should read, " the remaining 360 feet" (instead of 320). On page 284, lines 23 and 21 should read, " 111 some places, the dolomite sand roof has remained thicker; and in isolated parts of the bed no replacement has occurred."

T HOUGH Ira B. Joraletnon has not had an eastern address since 1907, he is a New Yorker by birth, having been born at Antwerp, in the northern part of the state, on July 27, 1884. He got his scholastic training at Harvard, which gave him his A.B. degree in 1905 and an A.M. two years later. For the next fifteen years except for the war period, he was with the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., with headquarters at Warren, Ariz., being assistant man- ager when he left that company in 1922. During the first World War he spent a year and a half in France, where he achieved the rank of major in the signal corps, air division.
