It has been demonstrated that considerable bend ductility exists in bulk specimens of polycrystalline high-purity silicon. The possibility of hot-forming at 1200°C is suggested. EXCELLENT corrosion resistance in many media and low cross section for absorption of thermal neutrons (0.13 barn) would make silicon of interest to nuclear engineers were it not for extreme brittle-ness and the difficulty of fabrication by any reasonable means. The use of silicon for structural purposes also has been considered in view of its light weight and oxidation resistance. Johnson and Han-sen' have investigated the properties of silicon-base alloys and concluded that there was no way of making pure silicon or silicon-rich alloys ductile at room temperature. In view of reports of appreciable ductility in germanium single crystals above 550°C'." and some plastic deformation in single-crystal silicon above 900oC,' the present investigation was undertaken to define more precisely the limits of high-temperature ductility in pure silicon. After this investigation was begun torsion ductility in both germanium and silicon was reported by Greiner." Through the courtesy of F. H. Horn, a small bar of cast extra high-purity silicon was obtained and small bend specimens were made from it by careful machining and grinding. All of the reported tests results were obtained from samples from this bar (bar No. 1) and one other of similar source (bar No. 2). No complete analysis was obtained but, based on analysis of similar semi-conductor grade material, metallic impurities were under 0.01 pct total. Vacuum-fusion analysis for oxygen showed a value of 0.0018 2 0.0003 pct for the first bar tested and metallographic analysis showed no evidence of a second phase. Bend tests were carried out on an Instron tensile machine using a bend fixture with a 1 -in. span loaded at the center. Supporting and loading bars were 0.250 in. round and the load was applied by downward motion of the pulling crosshead of the machine. Specimen thickness and width were approximately 0.10 in. and % in. respectively. Loading rate was controlled by holding crosshead motion constant at 0.02 ipm. In some cases a smaller specimen was used on a 5/8-in. span with a 0.129-in.-diam loading bar. The entire bend fixture was surrounded by a hinged furnace and all heating was done in air atmosphere. Temperature measurement was made with thermocouples fastened directly to the bend fixture within less than 1 in. from the specimen. Autographic stress-strain curves were recorded during each test, and breaking load, total deflection, and plastic strain could be obtained from these curves. Stress was calculated from the beam formula S = 3PL/2bh2, where P is the load in pounds, L the span in inches, b the specimen width in inches, and h the specimen thickness in inches. This formula is strictly correct only in the elastic range but has been used to calculate a nominal stress for convenience in the plastic range. The stress given is the maximum stress in the specimen. Results The results of the complete series of tests are shown in Table I. The first group of tests (specimens Nos. 1-6) showed the beginning of plastic flow at a test temperature of 900°C, so two additional tests (Nos. 8 and 9) were made at 950°C on small-size specimens from bar No. 2. Specimen No. 8 was tested in the as-machined condition, and No. 9 was heat-treated in hydrogen at 1300°C for 2 hr, cooled to 1200°C and held 1 hr, cooled to 1000°C and held 1 hr, cooled to 900°C and held 1 hr, and finally cooled to a low temperature before removal from the hydrogen. It is apparent that the heat-treatment had a significant effect on yield strength and ductility. In addition, the magnitude of the yield point was conslderably reduced in the heat-treated specimen as is shown m Fig. 1 by tracings of the stress-strain curves. After obtaining a furnace capable of reaching higher temperatures specimens Nos. 10 to 13 were tested at 1100 and 1200°C. Strain rate was increased by up to a factor of 10 to see whether the ductility observed was excessively strain sensitive. Specimen NO. 10, strained at 0.02 ipm and 1100oC, was still bending at a deflection of 0.322 in. when the load rate was increased to 0.2 ipm, resulting in immediate

The evaluation of certain reser-voir properties, such as porosity and fluid saturation, from electrical well surveys has been widely accepted in petroleum engineering. Various investigators have established relationships between these properties and certain parameters which affect the response of the electrical log. Among these are the resistivities of the mud, its filtrate, and its filter cake. In 1949, Patnode1 established a relationship between the resistivities of the mud and filtrate. The well logging service companies have contributed relationships for the mud-mud cake resistivities2,3 These have been valuable since it was the practice to measure only resistivity of mud at the well site. During the mid-1940's the industry began drilling wells with oil-emulsion drilling fluids. These were conventional aqueous muds with a dispersed oil phase. Since 1950, oil-emulsion muds have been used on an increasing number of wells each year. However, the practice of measuring only the resistivity of the mud at the well site has continued, and the mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities have been determined by the above-mentioned relationships. Service companies are now equipped to measure all three resistivities at the well site. An investigation was conducted on the resistivities of oil-emulsion muds, mud filtrates, and mud cakes to determine if these values conformed to the relationships for aqueous muds. TYPES OF MUDS Fifty-one oil-emulsion mud samples were prepared in the laboratory following a standard manual' published by a leading mud company. The diesel oil in the samples varied from 5 to 50 per cent, the majority of the samples being in the 10 per cent region. The basic aqueous mud types which were converted to oil-emulsion muds were commercial clay and bentonite muds, low pH and high pH, caustic-quebracho treated muds, and lime treated muds. The emulsions were stabilized by dispersed solids, lignins, lignosulfo-nates, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, or sulfonated petrolatum. It is worthy of note that after a quiescent period of two weeks at room temperature all samples, regardless of emulsifying agent, remained stable. The make-up water for the muds was from the laboratory tap. Resistivities were varied by the addition of table salt to the water. A range of mud resistivities from 0.44 to 3.9 ohm-m was obtained in this way. Twenty-three field muds were tested. These covered the same range of mud types as did laboratory muds. Oil provinces of the Gulf Coast, South Texas, West Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, and Canada were represented. MUD TEST PROCEDURE Each mud was tested for density, viscosity, pH, and filter loss by standard testing techniques. The resistivity measurements were obtained with a Schlumberger EMT meter. This meter required small volumes of sample, e.g., 2 mm. Filtrate was obtained from a Standard Baroid fil-ter press at the end of a 30-minute test. The filter cake from the same test was used for cake resistivity measurements. Mud, filtrate, and cake samples were heated to 100" F in a constant temperature water bath prior to measurement of resistivities. RESULTS The relation between mud resistivity (Rm) and mud filtrate resistivity (Rmf) is shown in Fig. 1. The solid line represents an average for the data. The equation of this line is Rmf =0.876 (Rm) 1.075 . . (1) Arbitrary limits, indicated by the dashed curves, have been set. The majority of the data falls within these limits, but some points do lie outside the limits. The approximate equation Rmt = 0.88 Rm , . . . . (2) will give satisfactory results within these limits. The data on mud cake resistivity Rmc is shown in Fig. 2. The solid line is an average for the data. The equation for the line is Rmc = 1.306 (Rm)0.88 The dashed lines are arbitrary limits on the data. Within these limits, Eq. 3 may be simplified to Rmc = 1.31 Rm . . . . (4) DISCUSSION The limiting curves in Figs. 1 and 2 represent maximum deviations of ±25 per cent. Thus the use of the average curves can introduce considerable error. There is no substitute for accurate measurements of mud, mud cake, and mud filtrate resistivities at the well site. The mud sample tested should be representative of the mud opposite the formation being logged. The average mud filtrate resistivity curve of Fig. 1 is reproduced in Fig. 3 with two curves which have been published for clay-base aqueous muds2,3. The latter curves were determined from average values of a large number of drilling fluids. The three curves have essentially the same slope and the differences between them are from 7 to 22 per cent. Comparison is made only to illustrate the possibility of error

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis's committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. A copy of the "Model Law" in pamphlet form will be sent to any member on request from A.I.M.E. headquarters while the supply lasts. The report:

The Smelting and Refining Department of Cerro de Pasco Corporation is located at La Oroya at an altitude of 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) in the Peruvian Andes. Producing lead, zinc and copper as well as twelve by-product metals and chemicals, the smelter is among the world's most complex. With the intake of high-bismuth ores in 1934, electrolytic lead refining by a modified Betts process was piloted and the plant went into commercial production in 1937 at a nominal capacity of 100 M.T. per day. After expansions in 1950 and 1963, nominal capacity has increased to 250 M.T. per day. Anodes spaced at 10.8 cm centre to centre and starting sheets are both set into the cells by overhead cranes. The asphalt-lined concrete cells are arranged in a Walker side-by-side configuration, and the electrolyte, circulating at 13 l/min./cell, is a solution of locally-produced hydrofluosilicic acid and lead fluosilicate. The corrosion cycle is limited to four days due to high impurity content of the bullion, which has successfully been treated at contents of up to 9% impurities. The cathodes are melted, drossed, and cast into blocks and pigs assaying 99.997 + % lead. The anodes with the blanket of slime adhering, are washed with electrolyte and condensate makeup water to remove the concentrated lead fluosilicate entrapped in the slimes. The slimes are then removed with high-pressure water sprays, centrifuged and sent to another plant for recovery of silver, gold, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, and antimony.

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

During the year terminating at the date for the third annual meeting of Engineering Foundation, the Board completed, its undertaking to sustain the National Research Council for one year. Assistance given in the organization of the National Research Council has been amply justified by the results. The Council is now well established in a 4¬story building at 1023 16th Street, N. W., Washington, and has recently secured another similar building near by in order to house its increasing force. The breadth, importance and volume of work done have steadily grown. Foreign offices have recently been established in London and Paris, Dr. H. A. Bumstead being in charge of the former and Dr. William F. Durand of the latter. The total expenditure by Engineering Foundation for the National Research Council was $9,036, derived partly from income of the endowment fund and partly from special gifts from Ambrose Swasey and Edward D. Adams. In May, Walter M. Gilbert was appointed Assistant Secretary of Engineering. Foundation, with headquarters in Washington, his services being contributed by the Carnegie Institution. He also became and has remained to date Assistant Secretary of the National Research Council. In September, resolutions were exchanged between the Engineering Foundation Board and the National Research Council, setting forth a policy of continuing reciprocal relationship, and a conference committee, Chairman M. I. Pupin, Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, and Gano Dunn, was appointed to inform the National Research Council of the readiness of Engineering Foundation to work upon definite problems sug-gested by the Council. No problems have yet been suggested.

MUCH has been written relative to the errors involved in the use of a galvanometer for measuring thermocouple electromotive forces. In general, it may be said that accuracy with a galvanometer is secured only at the sacrifice of durability, unless manual adjustment is made in the operation of the instrument to overcome the errors of resistance. and resistance changes. The pyrovolter and the potentiometer both require manual adjustment for every reading, readings being taken on a "null" method. To the end that some of these balances may be eliminated and only an occasional balance be made as a check reading, the "continuously deflecting pyrovolter" was developed. Essentially, the operation of the continuously deflecting pyrovolter is to determine the resistance of the thermocouple circuit, though its value is not noted or indicated, then throwing in series with the thermocouple sufficient resistance to bring the sum up to some standard value for which the indications of the galvanometer will be correct. This result may, however, be accomplished in a somewhat simpler manner, for which general method patents are now in the course of application. If we devise a galvanometer circuit so that by means of a simple adjustment the resistance of the entire circuit will be rendered equal to some constant predetermined value, we may rely on the galvanometer to give correct e.m.f. indications (assuming that the errors of temperature resistance coefficient and cold junction have been properly allowed for), and will indicate temperature continuously where the e.m.f. measured is developed by a thermocouple.

Discussion of the paper of H. H. STOEK, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin 129, September, 1917, pp. 1385 to 1419. J. B. WARRINER, Lansford, Pa. (written discussion*).-The figures on costs given at the end of this paper. are of particular interest and it is unfortunate that they necessarily cover such limited periods, as figures giving the costs over a period of at least a year would be of much greater value; for instance, it seems hardly probable that the performances credited to the various shovels for the months for which the costs are given would represent the average of the performances of these machines over a longer period. It would seem to me that the maximum of 4000 cu. yd. (3058 cu. m.) per clay given for the 225 B shovel is much greater than could be maintained for an entire year's operation. On the other hand, the 1500-yd. figure for the 150 B shovel would seem a low average for this type of shovel. In connection with the drag-line excavators, it will be interesting to know that the Lehigh Coal, and Navigation Co. is about to install one of these machines on a clay stripping at their Nesquehoning colliery to excavate an average depth of. overburden of 65 ft. (19 m.), which, due to local conditions, will require that part of the excavated material be handled a second time and a lesser quantity a third time. The results of this operation will undoubtedly be watched with great interest.

This paper deals with the practical application of the Dutch State Mines cyclone separator for fine-coal cleaning. The more important operating variables are discussed, and results of a number of continuous-scale tests on various fine coals with a 6-in. cyclone separator are given. Descriptions of the Cyanamid Pilot Plant and the 50 tph Cyclone Separator Plant at the Emma Washery in Holland are included. TODAY, as never before, the coal producers of this country are faced with the necessity for obtaining maximum yield of marketable coal of all sizes down to and including the finest. Particular interest is being displayed in a more effective means of recovering the finer sizes which in the past so often have been discarded to waste or treated by inadequate equipment. The reasons for this interest are easily understood. Rising mining costs have resulted in the increased use of mechanized equipment underground for full seam mining. This, in turn, means more refuse in the run-of-mine and also more fines in the feed going to the cleaning plant. Stringent antistream pollution laws now make it necessary at least to impound the fines, and usually it is a paying proposition to recover the coal from these fines before sending them to the storage area. Finally, the market and price of the finer sizes has increased, but at the same time specifications have tightened and the demand is for higher grade products. During the past four years a great deal of publicity has been given to this new process and apparatus for treating fine sizes of ores as well as coal. Excellent discussions of the apparatus itself and the theoretical aspects of the basic operating principles involved in its operation have been presented by M. G. Driessen,1-3 M. R. Geer and H. F. Yancey,4,5 J. W. Hyer6 and more recently by D. A. Dahlstrom8 as well as others.7,9-11 In view of this, it has been decided to include in the present paper only a brief description of the cyclone separator and its operating principles. This paper deals primarily with some of the more practical commercial aspects of the process and equipment required for its operation; the variables in the operation of the cyclone, their effect and means for control; and the results obtained with a 6-in. semicommercial size separator on a variety of fine coals, bituminous and anthracite, using finely ground magnetite for the separating medium solids. A description is included of the commercial-size cyclone separator pilot plant installed by the Dutch State Mines at its Emma mine in Holland, where finely ground slate is utilized as medium solids. Field of Application: The Dutch State Mines cyclone separator operates most efficiently on ores and coal in the size range of % in. to about 48 mesh. On some types of feed, effective separation can be made on sizes as small as 100 mesh, but up to the present, this may be considered exceptional. Depending upon the type of medium used, the specific gravities of separation can be varied within wide limits, up to as high as 2.70, if magnetite is used as medium. G. Edmunds—Solid solubility is considered to be of either the interstitial or the substitutional type. Is it possible, in a binary alloy as the simplest case, that some of the solute atoms are present in the normal lattice sites (substitutionally or filling lattice vacancies) while simultaneously others are in interstitial positionss One might even ask whether a distribution of the two types may be the normal situation. H. M. Meyer—Metastable states of interstitial atoms occupying vacant lattice sites possibly occur as well as of substitutional atoms squeezed in between regular matrix positions. However (as we know since Hume-Rothery), the solute atoms choose between the two kinds of solutions; consequently, every solute will be unequivocally either substitutional or interstitial in the equilibrium state of the solid solution. M. Balicki—In view of the fact that the authors apparently correlate the analysis of the alloys at the ingot stage with the properties exhibited at the testing stage, I would like to ask whether this is a fully justifiable procedure. In other words, how good are their determinations of solute concentration for correlating them with the mechanical properties. The answer to this question may explain some of the divergencies. Assuming good enough homogenization of the samples and exact determination of mechanical properties the position of the plotted experimental points will depend solely upon the accuracy of composition determination. If this is not accurate, say due to loss or pickup of elements during processing from the ingot to the testing stage, or due to a systematic error in the method employed for obtaining solute concentration data, the points will deviate from their true position and may align themselves along a different curve than the one expected. H. V. Kinsey—We have been studying the creep-rupture properties of titanium-base alloys at 1000°F. In the course of this work, anomalies in behavior of the alloys that would suggest that the material under test was becoming stronger as the test progressed have been observed. If this was so, the most likely explanation that we could think of was that the test bars were absorbing oxygen and nitrogen from the air during the test and were thereby becoming strengthened. In an attempt to determine the strengthening effect of absorbed oxygen and nitrogen the following experiment was conducted. A length of cold-rolled titanium was supplied by the E. I. du Pont Co. Two test bars, having a 1/4 in. diam gauge length, were prepared from this material. One bar was tested in the as-received condition. The second bar was heated in air at 1550°F for 100 hr and subsequently air cooled prior to testing. A testing temperature of 1000°F was employed. The results of these tests are tabulated in table 11. In the author's opinion, is it reasonable to assume that the bar that was exposed to air at 1550°F for 100 hr was stronger because it absorbed oxygen and nitrogen from the air during this heat treatment? W. L. Finlay (authors' reply)—Direct experimental evidence for or against Mr. Edmunds' interesting suggestion will probably never be available.
