In 1955, the U.S. Army started to experiment in Greenland with tunneling in glacial ice and later in frozen glacial moraine. By 1960, long adits and experimental rooms had been successfully excavated. Full mechanization with coal-cutting machinery was most efficient in ice but drilling and blasting were necessary in bouldery moraine. In 1963, the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, (USA CRREL; redesignated U.S. Army Terrestrial Sciences Center July 1, 1968) started a tunnel in the frozen silt of central Alaska near Fairbanks. The original adit of 360 ft (109 m) was successfully driven in the permafrost by a twin-rotor tunnel-boring machine, the Alkirk Cycle Miner. The workings were enlarged in 1966 and 1967 by standard mining techniques in which jackhammers, steam points, and augers were compared. A mechanical coal cutter was tried to supplement drilling and blasting. In 1968, airblasting techniques were used successfully for breaking out the frozen silt. All mine products were loaded mechanically and hauled by self-dumping shuttle car. Pneumatic methods of transport were tried for both dust removal and for conveying blast products up to 3-in. maximum size. Studies of the effects of natural winter ventilation through a shaft showed that tunnel closure could be reduced by lowering the adjacent ground temperature. It is concluded that underground openings in frozen ground should be cut and maintained at well below freezing temperatures to hold deformation to a minimum. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This chapter deals with aspects of tunneling not previously discussed in the conference papers in this book. The chief differences are that the three tunnels lie entirely within frozen material and are relatively small, since they were constructed mainly for research. We should like to point out that a similar idea was put forward by Friedel8 in his book on the subject of lattice merohedrism "merihedrie réticulaire:"—When two crystals A and B are twinned with respect to a mirror plane, there exists a common superlattice, "réseau periode," which is independent of the contact surface between the two crystals. The volume V of this superlattice is a simple multiple of the volume v of the lattice of crystals A, or B, (Fig. 5). This "multiple cell" is defined by the twin plane (p q r) and a row of atoms [h k l] normal to this plane, the base being taken as the smallest unit (two-dimensional) of this plane. Two cases must be considered. First when the multiple cell, as defined, has no atom site at its center nor at the center of its faces other than (p q r), v the twinning index is defined by —. In the second v case, when one of the two above conditions does not v apply, then the twinning index is V 2v A more intuitive definition of the twinning index would be the proportion of atoms of C, which would coincide with those of C1 when the C, lattice is imagined to extend on the other side of the contact surface. With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.

During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. For details concerning discoveries, extensions and important wildcat wells drilled during 1939 see Table 2. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

IT HAS been known for centuries that iron and steel could be hardened by cold hammering and that the metal could be restored to the normal condition by heating to a red heat and cooling either rapidly or slowly with nearly pure iron and slowly with steels containing considerable carbon. The art of tempering steels is also very old. When a medium- or high-carbon steel is quenched from a cherry-red heat, the hardness is increased; this hardness can be reduced by heating to various temperatures below the lower thermal critical point, which is near 700° C. The present paper will not consider these old and well-known changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range but will confine itself to the more unusual changes, some of which have been studied recently. Stromeyer,1 for example, in 1886, reports that both working steel and heat treatment of steel in the blue-heat range are highly injurious. Recently, however, some metallurgists believe that the straightening of warped steel forgings at a blue heat produces a beneficial effect on the metal.2 The Engineering Division of the National Research Council has constituted a committee on Physical Changes -in Iron and Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range, which has the following personnel: R. UP to a certain limit, the increase of pressure on the diamond-drill increases the rate of progress in drilling. That limit is set by the resistance of the diamonds to compression; and beyond it, the destruction of the stones will involve an. economic loss, both in time and in money. It is, therefore, important to all diamond-drillers to know what is the resistance mentioned. In Europe, operators usually follow an empirical rule, which directs the maintenance of a pressure, on the area-of the bottom of the drilling-tool, of 12 kg. per sq. 4m. For the tools in ordinary use, this is equivalent to 1 kg. per sq. mm. of the diamonds set in the tool So far as I know, American drillers are using pressures as high as 50 to 60 kg. per sq. cm. of the total area of the drill, and the consumption of diamonds (on Denny's authority, 0.2 carats per meter bored) is greater in America than in Europe. But the reason for this difference may be the comparatively larger size of the diamonds commonly used by American drillers. With the assistance of my friend, the late S. Woisslaw, who was the pioneer of diamond-drilling in Russia, I selected from his stock a number of black diamonds, which I subjected in my laboratory to compression-tests. To prepare regular cubes for such tests, as is generally done with other stones, would have been not only costly, but, what is more important, practically useless. I therefore determined, in order to assimilate as nearly as possible the conditions of actual use, to place each sample between a hard plate (corresponding to the rock) and a softer plate (corresponding to the bottom of the tool), into which it would be pressed during the test.

I have bad considerable experience with the testing-machine at the Watertown Arsenal, having had broken there sixteen large steel eye-bars, besides quite a number of iron bars and two compression members. So far as accurate mid satisfactory results are concerned, the machine is all we could ask for, and the officers who have it in charge, together with their civil assistants, are thoroughly conversant with it 1 details, and entirely competent to make the tests required. The principal defect is that the force is very inadequate. As the machine is arranged, tile weighing apparatus is at one end and stationary, the measure of strain being carried from this to the scale-beam by the fluid in a tube m small that it looks like a wire. At the other end is placed the hydraulic press by which the power is applied; this press is mounted on a small carriage and held by two eight-inch screws about four feet above the floor, which arc of course strained in compression during tensile tests, and in tension during' compression tests. When the stretch of the material has exhausted the throw of the plunger it is necessary to relieve the strain, draw back the plunger, and move the carriage along, which is done by nuts turned by steam working on the large screws. Every specimen placed in the machine must be lifted above the large screws and lowered into position. To do this, crabs, running on travellers, which span the entire room, are placed over the machine, and by these the specimen can be lifted and put in place. The actual time required to make a test depends largely on the amount which the material stretches, bat it may generally be said, that for specimens which will stretch from two to three feet the

FRED HELLMAN, New York.-My experience with shovel mining has been restricted almost entirely to Chuquicamata as far as operation is concerned. We had there an unusual condition in that the rock is cohesive because of the salts in it, so that you can probably work higher banks than is possible in most places. Recently they have reduced the height of the banks and have found that lower bank affords better working condition than the higher bank. It took two years of experimentation to determine the best height of bank for that particular mine. Each mine should be considered by itself and, to state off hand the best height of bank. for any given mine is impossible. We worked the high banks in Chile without much trouble. We adopted high banks in the beginning in order to obtain the minimum expense in railway approaches at that time. The first plan was for 50 ft.; then to get production started with the smallest possible expenditure of money, the approach to the deposit was changed and the first bank had an ultimate height of about 180 ft. We worked that bank; quite success-fully, but I do not think that it could be done anywhere else.

THE terms " developed " and " undeveloped " are necessarily relative and cover a wide range; but the latter is here applied to cases in which the information at hand falls short of a clear demonstration of values, and conclusions must be reached from a study of the geological conditions of the particular deposit, interpreted in the light of similar and closely related deposits. Such an inquiry might be characterized as an effort to reach reliable conclusions from insufficient data. But the engineer engaged in commercial work finds himself often face to face with apparently such problems; and while he may realize with regret that a small amount of intelligent development would add enormously to the value of his conclusions, he is compelled to recognize the demand of a business situation for a prompt decision as the basis of immediate action. In a case within my knowledge, the question involved was the purchase of 50,000 acres of coal-land, and 10 days was the limit within which this question must be decided. Of course, it was impossible to make a satisfactory examination within that time; but the 'instructions were "to make the most complete examination and the most positive recommendation possible." Such instructions are often given; for, no matter how much time an investor may have, he is likely to put of his decision until the last moment, and then discover that he needs more light and advice. It does not follow that engineers, after full explanation and mutual understanding of the situation, should decline to undertake examinations thus limited. In the case just mentioned, while only the broadest view was possible, half the time available was sufficient to show that the property was a good purchase. Discussion of the paper of N. V. Hansell, presented at the Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912, and published in Bulletin No. 72, December, 1912, pp. 1497 to 1,517. C. Q. PAYNE, New York (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Hansell has presented in his paper a very interesting and valuable summary of the various methods of enriching iron-ores which have been developed during recent years. Particularly striking in this connection is the high degree of enrichment of the concentrates from magnetic iron-ores which is now commercially feasible. Magnetic concentrates containing from 6 7 to 139 per cent. of metallic iron, showing an efficiency of 90 and even 95 per cent. in. their separation, are not now uncommon. Such results exceed those obtained by gravity methods of treatment of all copper-, lead-, and zinc-ores, and are only equaled in the cyaniding of gold-ores and in the flotation treatment of certain copper-ores. It is of interest to note that the-type of magnetic field which is employed in securing these results, in the Gröndal (wet) and the Ball & Norton (dry) systems of treatment is the same in each case : viz., a field of alternating north and south poles. The credit for developing this simple and useful field, which has found so wide an application both in this country and abroad, is due to two American inventors and engineers, Clinton M. Ball and Sheldon Norton. At the same time, it should be noted that part of the improvement in the grade of the magnetic concentrates, especially in the case of the wet treatment of finely mineralized ores, is due to a well-devised scheme of mill-treatment, whereby a rough concentrate is usually obtained as an intermediate product, which is then recrushed and reseparated in obtaining final clean products.

The Subcommittee on Manganese, of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Industrial Preparedness, prepared under date of Jan. 24, 1924, for and at the request of the War Department, a confidential report on manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This report was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manganese in the problem of industrial preparedness agenist a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the onclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply wi' this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened and ex' tive studies were once more made of the entire subject of mang? . A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted + War Department in February, 1932. This second report, with 4. L specific conclusions and recomrnendations expressed to the War Department omitted, has now been released and is hereby published. Following a rather brief discussion of uses of manganese and classification of manganese ores, requirements and sources are dealt with at some length. Domestic ferro-grade reserves are estimated on the basis of price and are shown by means of a curve where tons of metallic manganese are plotted cumulatively against prices ranging from 50¢ to $1.00 per unit; thereby indicating at a glance the tonnage which the Committee believes would become commercially available at any particular price per unit. Foreign sources of ore are described and foreign prices which the domestic producer must meet are considered. The question of a war-emergency reserve is then analyzed, requirements are balanced against apparent resources, and the principal conclusion that emerges is that a war reserve or stockpile is still vital to national defense.

BENJAMIN L. MILLER, So. Bethlehem, Pa.-In discussing the question personally with Mr. Matteson I have found that he simply proposed this as a suggestion and he recognizes, as well as a great many other oil geologists and oil operators, that to put into practice such a suggestion would mean the overcoming of many difficulties. Yet perhaps it may be possible to overcome the various objections that may be offered. Undoubtedly one of the most serious objections is that of incomplete and inaccurate well records. Faulty records are worse than no records at all. Perhaps, however, definite instructions and insistence on their observation may remedy this defect after a time. THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-This subject is a. very important one, but just how far the National Government can go in .taking action is a question: It involves, of course, the question of State rights. California, I .think, has done very well up to date and probably will do better in the future. The law that was passed at the session of the Legislature 2 years ago is working as satisfactorily as anything of that kind can work with so little experience to guide the framers of the statute. We recognize in California the vital necessity of conserving the oil of the State. We have come to the conclusion that there is not as much oil ,in California as we thought there was. In the month of December the State drew on its oil stocks to- the extent of 1,800,000 bbl. and I think that the January statistics will show probably as much more. There is more or less of a.: panic at the present time among the large marketing concerns regarding the question as to where they are going to get their oil for future requirements

Craig (University of Toronto, Toronto, O,nt., Canada)—The advent of pyramidal slip at room temperatures in a magnesium crystal (M2,) and the very low value reported for the critical shear stress are puzzling. Table I1 shows the calculated values (approximate) for sin x cos I in this specimen if all the (10l) planes are considered. If So is the shear stress resolved in the direction of glide, on the glide plane, and U, is the stress operative in yield point tests, then: S,, — 325 (0.169) 55gpersqmm (approximately) for 1101: S,, = 325 (0.465) = 151 gpersqmm (approximately) for (0001): S,, — 325 (0.101) - 32.8 gpersqmm (approximately) Thus, we see the pyramidal plane in which the minimum shearing component operated. Barrett"' stated: "Experiments have repeatedly shown that, when there are several crystallographically equivalent slip systems in a crystal, the one having the greatest resolved shear stress will become active. ..." Hibbard, Jr. (authors' reply) —Although the low value for the critical resolved shear stress for pyramidal slip may be puzzling, there does not appear to be any basis for questioning the validity of the measurements. Under the influence of constraints, slip systems having decidedly lower shearing components may become operative, e.g., "cross-slip" or the "forced glide" in magnesium reported by Bakarian. Since we believe that pyramidal slip occurred in the specimen because basal slip was inhibited, it is not too surprising to find an operative plane with a lower shear stress. -7 C. S. In view of the great interest now taken in the tests of castiron and details of foundry practice, with the number of investigators at work, and recent improvements in the methods of research, it would seem that the time is ripe to attempt the solution of some of the many problems with which iron founders have to contend. Recent papers and discussions on these subjects* have opened up s large field for investigation, and have emphasized the importance of many considerations generally overlooked. With the view of promoting a comprehensive and systematic discussion, I have attempted to tabulate, in conveilient form, some of the most important points for investigation, on the general plan suggested, with such good results, by our former President, H. M. Howe, for the discussion on the Physics of Steel, at the Virginia Beach meeting, last year. This table can, no doubt, be modified or enlarged to advantage, and put in shape to serve as a guide or reminder to all who are interested in this line of work. Peretti (University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind.)—Mr. Deitz and Professor Halpern are to be congratulated on a fine piece of work which adds to our knowledge of precious metal—cyanide-solution reactions. I should like to offer the following comments: The authors state, "the rate plots were always linear, indicating a zero order reaction rate." This appears to conflict with the data of Fig. 6 which clearly show the rate to vary with the NaCN concentration. It seems to me that the rate curves are linear because of the experimental setup. The volume of solution is so large that over a three-hour period the change in NaCN concentration is very small. A rough calculation for the experiments of Table I where the initial NaCN strength was 0.0096 mol per liter show a change of NaCN concentration of about 0.0009 mol per liter at the end of three hours. In short, over the period of time that the experiment was in progress, the NaCN strength was practically constant; hence the rate of dissolution remained practically constant. Eq. 10, as written, specifies that 1 mol of H202 and 2 mol of hydroxyl ion are formed when 2 mol of silver react. Is this true? The effect of H,O2 on the rate was made in solutions having an oxygen pressure of 4.8 atm. Were any tests made in solutions containing hydrogen peroxide, but no oxygen? G. M. Willis (University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia)—The authors have shown that, under their experimental conditions of high O2 concentrations, the rate of solution of silver in aqueous cyanide solutions is controlled by diffusion of O2 or CN- to the metal surface. With diffusion control, it is generally not possible to obtain further information about the mechanism of a process.

The San Miguelito Field of Ventura County, California, lies along the coast approximately five miles northwest of the city of Ventura. The structure is one of several in the Ventura anticline, a series of anticlinal folds trending northwest-southeast through the San Miguelito Field. The Ventura Avenue Field lies to the southeast along the anticline, and Padre Canyon and Rin-con Fields lie to the northwest; the series then extends beneath the Pacific Ocean. Production is obtained from the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age, and oil accumulation is controlled by faulting, lithology and structure. The first well in the First Grubb Pool was completed in November, 1931, and to date 48 producing wells have been drilled on the 276 productive acres. Approximately 685 ft of net pay are contained in the eight sand bodies grossing 1,220 ft of section. Production of oil to date has been 15,-600,000 bbl. A gas injection project was instigated in April, 1940, but was discontinued in September, 1949. This paper is confined to a discussion of the development and performance history of the First Grubb Pool of the San Miguelito Field. LOCATION AND GEOLOGY The San Miguelito Oil Field is located in Ventura County about five miles northwest of the city of Ventura along the coastal highway to Santa Barbara. It is located within sections 23, 24, 25, and 30 of Township 3 North, Range 24 West, San Bernardino Base and Meridian. Surface elevation in the field ranges from sea level to plus 1,200 ft, and the terrain is extremely rugged. The structure is well defined on the surface and on the wall of the Amphitheatre Canyon where appears a so-called "text book" anticlinal section. The San Miguelito structure is an asymmetrical, elongated anticline about two miles long and three-fourths of a mile wide. The trend of the axis of the anticline is northwest-southeast. Fig. 9 illustrates the contours and major faults of this structure. Dips on the southwesterly flank average about 40 degrees, whereas the northeasterly flank ranges from 60 to 75 degrees. There are several faults striking generally east and west. These faults do not appear to affect materially the area of accumulation or performance behavior. It is believed that accumulation was affected by steeply dipping beds and extremely low permeability of the northeast flank of the structure. As shown by the typical log, Fig. 1. the San Miguelito Field is divided into two stratigraphic producing intervals. The First Grubb Pool comprises the interval from the "G" to "L" markers; the Second Grubb Pool from the "L" to "M" markers. The First Grubb Pool, ranging in thickness from 1,105 to 1,680 ft, with an average of 1,220 ft, includes approximately 685 ft of oil-bearing sands. The First Grubb zone consists of eight sand intervals separated by shales. The shale bodies separating the eight sand intervals within the First Grubb Pool are continuous throughout the major part of the structure and serve as an effective barrier. Many of the thin, irregular shale or siltstone streaks within these sand bodies are discontinuous and do not affect well performance appreciably. The productive horizons in the First Grubb Pool are siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Pico and Repetto formations of Pliocene age. It is apparent from inspection of the typical log that the "G" to "L" interval might have been separated into at least six producing zones and selectively pro. duced. Unfortunately the electric log and some of our modern tools were not available or were in their infancy dur. ing the period 1931 through 1937. Not until 1937 when eight wells had been completed were there sufficient geological data to permit definition of the sand bodies.
