Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

The North Arm of Sulawesi hosts numerous gold and base metal occurrences. Compilation and analysis of geological, tectonic, geochemical and isotopic age date data collected over the past six years on the central part of this region have resulted in the definition of 184 prospects and mineral occurrences of various styles occurring in diverse geological settings representing varying tectonic environments and erosional levels. Mineralisation of the following styles have been recognised: porphyry Cu-Au; porphyry-related gold and base metal veins; high-sulphidation Cu-Au-As; low-sulphidation epithermal Au; hydrothermal breccias; and sediment-hosted Au mineralisation. Clusters of occurrences/prospects form mineralised districts representative of magmatic systems with characteristics determined by the tectonic environment prevailing during formation and the subsequent level of exposure by erosion. Distinctly different Miocene and Pliocene porphyry systems are now recognised whilst most of the remaining epithermal mineralisation is thought to be Pliocene or later. The central North Arm of Sulawesi is composed of a Miocene magmatic island arc that is built on an Early Tertiary basement of predominantly oceanic basaltic rocks and overprinted by a Pliocene magmatic arc. A structural fabric dominated by SSE arc-normal and ESE arc-parallel faults was established during the Miocene under a dextral wrench regime and intersections of these major fault sets are favoured sites for Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Strong dextral tension caused by the collision of the Sula Platform, at the close of the Miocene, led to arc-parallel rifting. Sinistral reactivation of the major Miocene structures in the Pliocene led to further rifting, and ENE-dilation. Pliocene intrusions and related mineralisation exploit these dilatant settings. Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation occurs where late-Miocene quartz diorite stocks have intruded the margins of earlier Miocene plutons of intermediate composition. Porphyry centres have associated peripheral base metal veins, and skarns. Overprinting of porphyry vein sets by epithermal veins is common. Sediment-hosted gold mineralisation occurs in calcareous sediments associated with the Miocene arc. Remnants of the Pliocene volcanic arc, comprised of dacite volcanics, intrusions and voluminous pyroclastics, dominate the south coast and host porphyry Cu-Au, high sulphidation Cu-Au-As deposits, low-sulphidation epithermal Au veins and disseminated gold mineralisation. In some prospects, mineralised sinters are preserved adjacent to vein systems and deeper mineralised stockworks. Diatremes are common and large caldera structures have been identified. Pliocene stocks and porphyry dyke swarms penetrate the main central and northern parts of the Miocene- arc introducing additional porphyry Cu-Au, base metal hydrothermal breccias and low-sulphidation gold veins. Rapid uplift and erosion has resulted in a highly variable preservation of styles of mineralisation adding further diversity within the mineralised districts and telescoping within deposits.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

The strength of roof shales is, in part, a function of the preferred orientation of clay minerals within them. Therefore, analysis of clay fabric under both air-dried and hydrated conditions should be helpful in understanding roof shale failure. Core samples were collected from the Energy, Anna, and Lawson shales, which are locally present as roof shales of the Herrin No. 6 coal of southern Illinois. The Clay Fabric Index (CFI) was measured for thirty core samples, using X-ray diffractomtry, to investigate the relationship between clay fabric and roof collapse in coal mines. Greater CFI values indicate a weaker preferred orientation among clay minerals, which generally results in a weaker inter-grain bond. Average CFI values for air-dried samples were: 0.15 for Anna shale; 0.20 for Energy shale; and 0.37 for Lawson shale, .After the introduction of water, average CFI values increased to: 0.28 for Anna shale; 0.22 for Energy shale; and 0.43 for Lawson shale. The laboratory results indicate the following: [l] under air-dried conditions, Anna shale is the most stable, followed by Energy and Lawson shales; and 121 under hydrous (mine) conditions, Energy shale is the most stable, followed by Anna and Lawson shales. In mine environments where roof failures involving Energy shale have occurred, planar trends delineated by a relatively high density of small (0.2-4 cm diameter) iron concretions have been reported along the failure surface. Radial cracks have been observed around unsealed anchor bolt holes in the Anna shale. Instability of the Lawson shale is ubiquitous in coal mines. In the laboratory, similar physical changes were noted in the shale samples after the introduction of water, including [l] increased hydration around the perimeter of iron concretions in Energy shale, [2] radial extension cracks in Anna shale, and 131 extreme slaking of Lawson shale. Measured increases in the CFI reflect the observed physical changes of the samples upon the introduction of water, which probably reflect changes in strength that may result in roof failures in hydrated mine environments.

Stress induced, gravity-assisted failure processes typically dominate long before stress levels approach the strength of the intact rock (at approximately smax > 0.4UCS where smax = 3s1 ? s3 and UCS is the Unconfined Compressive Strength of the intact rock (Martin et al. 1999)). Under these conditions, discontinuities typically become clamped and the failure process becomes brittle. This brittle failure process is dominated by new stress induced fractures growing subparallel to the excavation boundary. While it is possible to identify areas with the potential for brittle failure, for example, using the general assumption that brittle failure will occur in areas at right angles to the major principal stress (Hoek et al., 1995), when the threshold smax > 0.4UCS is reached in areas around the tunnel boundary, or elastic modelling and the Hoek-Brown brittle parameters proposed by Martin et al., (1999) (i.e. m? 0 and s ? 0.11), amongst others, recent observations discussed by Everitt & Lajtai (2004), and Kaiser (2005; 2006) suggest that brittle failure processes are enhanced when structural features such as joints, weakness zones, bedding planes or foliations are preferentially orientated around the excavation boundary creating stress raisers which in turn facilitate the stress-driven rock mass disintegration process (e.g., as illustrated by Everitt & Lajtai (2004) on Figure 1b). Such weaknesses induce stress heterogeneities that thus promote tensile-spalling failure processes (Diederichs 2000). The observations suggest that stress induced damage can occur ?prematurely? depending on the orientation of micro and macro structures in situations where the known stress conditions should not yet initiate brittle failure processes. In general, when structural features (micro and/or macro), especially foliations, are present in a rock mass, the strength is effectively reduced, largely due to tensile strength heterogeneity in areas depending on the orientation of the structural features with respect to the excavation boundary. As a result, stress induced damage could occur in areas not normally considered due to the influence of anisotropy (Figure 1).

Nanosized tungsten powder was synthesized by the hydrogen reduction of ammonium paratungstate (APT) in thermal plasma. The effects of operating conditions on the product composition and particle size were investigated. The particle size of synthesized W powder was less than 30 nm in all cases tested. The sintering behavior of the synthesized powder (25 nm average size) was then investigated and compared with those of commercial W powder of 500 nm average size and W powder of 23 nm average size produced by milling the commercial powder. The sintering was done at 1400oC with various holding times. The hardness of the resulting compact from the synthesized W powder (315 VHN) was similar to that from the milled W powder (309 VHN), but the plasma-synthesized powder had a much lower tendency to form cracks. The compacts of both nanopowders were significantly harder than that of the commercial powder (192 VHN).

"Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metal-contaminated leachate generated when pyrite-bearing rocks are exposed to surface oxidizing conditions, is a serious environmental problem encountered after the closure of mines and mineral processing operations. In this study, we investigated the effects of soluble phases and metallic oxides, which are commonly found in strongly weathered pyritic wastes, on pyrite oxidation. Strongly weathered pyrite containing melanterite (FeSO4·7H2O) as the main soluble phase was obtained from Furikusa mine, Japan. The sample was washed using two methods to vary the relative amounts of melanterite in the sample. The effect of metallic oxides on pyrite oxidation was evaluated using ultrapure hematite suspensions. Our results showed that under acidic conditions, the effect of soluble salts on the oxidation of pyrite was stronger than hematite. More thorough washing of the sample resulted in the formation of an arsenic-bearing iron-oxyhydroxysulfate coating that minimized pyrite dissolution. This oxidized layer became relatively thicker and mechanically stronger when hematite was introduced after the more thorough removal of soluble salts. Characterization of this “coating” coupled with geochemical modeling suggest that it is most probably composed of two materials: schwertmannite and scorodite. Based on these results, a new approach to suppress pyrite oxidation by directly using iron-oxyhydroxysulfate as coating material is introduced.INTRODUCTION Acid mine drainage (AMD), the very acidic and heavy metals-contaminated leachate produced in closed/abandoned mine sites (Evangelou, 1995), mineral processing and coal cleaning tailings (Evangelou, 1995), and tunnel construction waste rocks (Tabelin and Igarashi, 2009, Tabelin et al., 2012), is one of the oldest and probably the most serious environmental problem of anthropogenic origin. For electric utilities serving the aluminum smelter industry in the United States, sulfur oxide (SOx) abatement legislation could bring about increases in the costs of generating electricity. This paper documents the method and assumptions used in estimating these increases, and the contains the results of the estimation. 1.2 SMELTER INFORMATION The smelters used in this study were identified by the Bureau of Mines (BOM) and are listed in Table 1.1. Also included in Table 1.1 are the electric utilities that serve these smelters. Compliance costs were estimated for these utilities. Some of the utilities are unique in the way that the information is handled or in the way the utility is operated; these are discussed below. 1.2.1 Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops, Data for Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops were gathered by George Mason University (GMU) students for BON and are included in this study.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

Commercial flotation plants operate on a continuous basis that is not simulated closely by the batch testing methods widely used in Bureau of Mines laboratory studies of flotation, Batch methods indicate whether a particular separation is possible but provide little or no information about the rates at which such separations can be effected in continuous operation, Therefore, laboratory equipment suitable for testing on a continuous basis was assembled for an investigation of a number of the operating variables that influence the flotation of coal. The results of these tests lead to the following conclusions: 1. Flotation recoveries were markedly influenced by variations in the percent solids in the feed, However, the relation between these variables is complex and depends on the particular coal and operating conditions used. Flotation rates generally increased with increased cell concentrations.

Because of concern over the availability and reliability of an uninterrupted supply of manganese and other materials, the U.S. Congress requested that the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) study the /low of strategic and critical materials in the economy to delineate and quantify the production areas where metal values are lost. As a result, the USBM developed a generic computerized commodity flow model that is readily amenable to updating. The original model developed for cobalt, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of manganese. This report follows the flow of manganese through its metallurgical and chemical applications and highlights areas where significant losses occur owing to downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 695,000 short tons (st) of manganese were consumed domestically in 1990. Scrap recovery specifically for manganese recycling was insignificant. However, considerable manganese was recycled through processing operations as a minor component of ferrous and nonferrous scrap and steel slag. The major loss category is manganese lost in steel processing, 323,156 st or 46 pet of the 1990 apparent consumption. Most of this loss reports to steelmaking slags. Recovery from slags is technically feasible, but is not economically feasible.

Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. To design and operate a successful mine the technical specialists must agree on what is ore, what is not ore, and how quickly the orebody is to be mined and processed. These seemingly simple questions defy easy analysis and can push mining engineers, geologists, metallurgists and others to the limit of their capabilities. The questions are rarely addressed adequately in feasibility studies or in operational planning. To optimise the mine and processing plant requires proper determination of cut-off grades or values, prediction of feed variability on an hourly, daily or longer basis, right-sizing the mining rate for optimum product quality, understanding the cost of capital and the expectations of investors, and many other considerations that involve geology, geotechnical engineering, mining, metallurgy, environmental effects and economics. Falls of ground (FOG) still account for around 35 per cent of all fatalities in underground southern African mines. To help reduce FOG, appropriate support technology needs to be implemented, and a mindset and cultural change are required to make a significant change. Discipline plays a major role and needs attention, whilst appropriate first-world support technology is available to assist in the reduction of injuries and the improvement of productivity. Section 54 mine stoppages due to FOG are costly. Appropriate support should reduce these unnecessary stoppages. Coal mining has adapted leading support technologies over the years. Platinum and chrome mines have shown significant moves towards adopting leading and appropriate support technologies, seeing noteworthy changes in injury statistics for the better. In typical conventional underground mining operations, the use of temporary support components offers some protection to workers while the permanent and generally more elaborate support systems are installed or constructed. Nonetheless, FOG continue and still result in injuries to people. The author wishes to explore the options and practicality of making use of new-generation support products and technology to provide not only safer support operations, but to also enhance productivity at the working faces. This paper will examine the use of appropriate support technology as a means to making the working stope or development end a safer and more productive workplace.

This paper presents the result of the analysis of strain-dependent concrete modulus from full-scale static axial compression load tests conducted on more than 200 instrumented cast-in-place barrettes and bored piles over the past 12 years, covering commonly adopted grades of concrete for heavy foundation construction in Malaysia and Singapore. The concrete modulus values, Ec, analysed were directly back-calculated from the material of the instrumented test piles by means of placing a layer of vibrating wire strain gauges near the pile head region. The best fit curve for back-calculated concrete secant modulus versus measured axial strain follows non-linear behaviour for both categories of test pile samples analysed. The result of the analysis seems to suggest that using average constant modulus value would generally lead to a significant error in load distribution computation, particularly at high stresses region.

He adds that subsequent reduction in plant performance and resulting increased maintenance costs occur. It is generally assumed that this statement is substantially correct as the fan handles the complete output from the mill, but with modern materials, reduction in performance and subsequent .maintenance are not now a problem. This consideration of handling the pulverised coal in the fan is more than offset by the advantage of operating the mill under suction which results in cleaner operating conditions, simpler feeder arrangements and elimination of complicated seals on the mill.and feeder unit. It should be specially noted that whereas mill exhausters in the past have used chequer plate blades (sometimes with the addition of hard facing by electrode deposit) it is modern practice to provide fan blades of up to 1 in·. thick Ni-hard suitablyheat treated, with the circumferential section of the fan also in Ni-hard.
