The increased focus on best practice environmental management has led to mining and mineral processing companies developing a variety of procedures to ensure that the environmental impacts of their operations are minimised, and that company managements are fully aware of these impacts and the policies and procedures established to ensure this process. Parallel to this, international standards for the development and implementation of environmental management systems are being promoted as necessary for companies to demonstrate their due diligence. Good environmental management systems should be built upon the systems already established within companies, and should ensure that the process of continual improvement is integral to their operation. An outline of the basic components of environmental management systems is provided, along with examples of the way various mining companies have implemented such systems. The benefits of best practice environmental management to mining companies are also considered.

THESE forums have been held annually since they were introduced by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The response of millmen to questionnaires such as the one this year is ample evidence of the interest these create. This year's topic is unlike those of past years since it is an attempt to understand a new concept of grinding rather than to improve the old. Before, we were thinking in terms of 2-5 cents improvement in grinding costs, now we will be discussing savings of 15-2 5 cents. As a background for this forum we will begin by summarizing the major controversial issues relating to grinding with steel, many of which will undoubtedly apply to pebble milling. Our •task to-day is to learn what has already been done in pebble milling and obtain a fair overall view of this method of grinding.

The conventional rare earth element (REE) industry has historically sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive REE concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the USA. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage other autogenous processes that lead to concentrated REE resources. One such process is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is very common in many coal mining districts and results from the exposure and oxidation of pyrite during mining. During the generation and migration of AMD, liberated sulfuric acid mobilizes several metal ions including REEs. Treatment of AMD is required under U.S.C §1251, the Clean Water Act, and often consists of neutralization, oxidation, and metal hydroxide precipitation. To investigate the deportment of REEs during this process, a field sampling campaign was undertaken, whereby the concentration of REEs in AMD and AMD precipitates was measured directly. In the nine sites evaluated in this study, the REE concentrations of the precipitates varied from 29 to 1286 ppm with an average of 517 ppm among the sampled sites. The individual elements were enriched compared with the associated bulk Northern Appalachian (NAPP) coal material by factors ranging from 3 to 15. Furthermore, the distribution of REEs in all precipitate samples favored the heavy REEs (HREEs) when compared with traditional REE ores. This research represents the first part of multi-part research endeavor to characterize, classify, and determine the practicality of refining REEs from AMD and its by-products.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. The first mention of gold in Western Australia was in 1848 when some specimens of copper ore, which are believed to have come from the Murchison district, were sent to Adelaide for assay. Gold was present in these specimens, but no particular interest seemed to be attached to this fact as the search at that time was mainly concentrated on base metals and coal. Interest appeared to be shown in gold in 1852 when several parties moved out eastwards from York looking for goldbearing country. Though these parties inmany cases were very near to what is now known as the Yilgarn Goldfield, nothing was found.The next record of gold was reported in some specimens which were brought in from Cardup, some 25 miles from Fremantle. Though this area was investigated, it would appear that all the gold had been contained in the specimens and nothing further was found, though the report had been the cause of a small rush of people interested in gold.From time to time specimens had been brought in by various people from the district east of Northam, and in 1861 a reward emanating from private sources was offered for the finding of gold within a radius of 150 miles from Perth. The Government at this stage took an interest in exploration for gold and in the same year supplemented this privately offered reward on a £ for £ basis. The Government also, about this time, commissioned a practical miner, with prospecting experience in the Eastern States, to examine the country between Albany and Northam with a view to the possible existence of goldbearing veins in that area. In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

A unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT)Center resulted in a video CD-ROM training program for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Cooperation from everyone involved, including the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),made this the product against which other training materials in the mining industry will be measured in the 21stcentury. This product’s versatility and wide application make it a tool that is as critical to a mine’s success as any earthmoving machine. The state and federal grant money involved allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

The methods of reinforcement to be discussed in this paper are all insitu methods, ones that can be used on the soil structure as it exists in the ground, and do not rely on excavation and replacement of the soil. Current practice in the United States, as well as new ideas and methods, will be discussed as they relate to slope stability, retaining walls, and to other uses such as control of mine or cavity related subsidence and to liquefaction control under existing structures. The method is based on the concept of "nailing" or reinforcing the soil in place, and thereby causing a mass of soil to act as a coherent unit. When performed properly, a true gravity structure can be constructed, one that will remain intact under both horizontal and vertical loadings and that will also resist vibrational and seismic loadings.

Development of the Northeast Layback of Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit commenced in June 2000 and was successfully completed to a height of 400m (1,300 ft) in January 2003. Following a brief exploration drilling campaign at the toe of the final slope, in-pit waste rock backfilling commenced, which will ultimately buttress the final wall. Instability initially occurred in late 2000, above the 5040 Level, as the slope height approached 120m (400 ft). As mining reached the 4680 Level, significant deformation was experienced over a slope height of 230m (760 ft). Slope stability was managed and targeted reserve recovery was achieved by executing complicated modifications of the mine plan, including splitting layback development, well placed offloading cuts, step-outs and mid-slope waste rock buttresses. Decision on timing of these modifying events was often dictated by review of deformation magnitudes and rates determined from continuous slope monitoring records. Design modifications were developed through continuing interpretive refinement of structural geology controls and groundwater distribution, and through stability re-assessments. This document presents an overview of the geological setting and material and strength conditions of the northeast sector of the Betze-Post open pit, followed by development experience leading to design and development of the Northeast Layback. Rock mechanics modeling, design details and geotechnical performance monitoring are then presented. Development experience, stabilizing adjustments to the original design and safety procedures for development and exploration activities are described. The document is finalized with conclusions and acknowledgements.

This paper presents research results on assessment of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment in surface coal mining. Environmental impact is accessed through the equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. Exhaust emission is related to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation is expressed through the particulate matter PM10 and total suspended particulate matter (TSP), while sound is presented through the sound pressure level. Modeling of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment is conducted in Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research is a part of a boarder project on development of software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and eco-friendly mining systems, which is sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to aid in quantifying environmental impact of digging and loading equipment and determinate strategies for reducing its overall impact.

The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recept studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d18O values. Preliminary oxygen and carbon isotopic data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia have emphasized the diverse origins of their ore fluids.The Mount Morgan gold-copper orebody is shown to be of the volcanogenic massive sulphide type with ore fluids predominantly of sea water origin. The Charters Towers fissure veins formed during hydrothermal activity associated with intrusion of Lolworth Igneous Complex equivalents. Oxygen isotopic studies of the quartz reefs at Stawell and Gympie have been inconclusive. The ore fluids have a d18O value of about 7 per mil and may be of magmatic or metamorphic derivation.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

The respect of EPB reference pressure during TBM advance and hyperbaric activities, the complete and effective filling of the annular gap between tunnel lining extrados and the excavation section and a well organized monitoring system, to control surface settlements and ground distortion, are items of utmost importance in EPB tunnelling process. The paper describes how these concepts have been applied while excavating in the difficult underground conditions found at Sao Paulo (Brazil) during the execution of the Sao Paulo Metro Line 4-Lot 1. In this project, the annular gap has been filled by two components type, cement grouting. The back feed of the extensive monitoring campaign carried out to check the surface settlements during the excavation and hyperbaric maintenance operations will also be described in the paper.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.

Electricity supply constraints in SA are increasingly challenging mines to operate more energy efficiently without reducing production output. Mining compressed air systems are well known to be operated inefficiently and are also a major power consumer. Two available and proven technologies can be applied on new and existing mines to replace or and optimise available compressed air facilities and achieve meaningful reductions in electrical power consumption; ? Hydro powered drilling and mining is significantly more energy efficient than compressed air and provides drilling rates that are twice as fast. ? Stope drilling systems using compressed-air or water drills allow further energy savings. The technologies are discussed and a broad strategy to selectively apply these them together is presented.
