"PT. Smelting was established in February 1996 as a company to· construct the first copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia with US$500 million direct construction cost and operate it. The plant is located in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia and 20km northwest from Surabaya, 2nd largest city in Indonesia. The site was selected due to following .advantages.1. Adjacent PT: Petrokimia Gresik, - a fertilizer company, purchases all sulfuric acid produced through pipeline.2. Facing on the seashore of the Madura Strait, it is possible to unload copper concentrate from West Papua (3,000km from Gresik) and load granulated slag to the market.3. Close to the good harbor facilities at Surabaya for export the products.4. Gresik Industrial Area has adequate infrastructure.5. Surabaya is a quite nice city to live for people from abroad.The shareholder of PT. Smelting are Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (60.5%), PT. Freeport Indonesia (25:0%), Mitsubishi Corporation (9.5%) and Nippon Mining and Metals Co. Ltd. (4.5%).The Gresik Copper Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from 660,000 tpy of copper concentrates supplied 100% by 'Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport, Indonesia in West Papua (former Irian Jaya). Other by products are 600,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 30,000 tpy of gypsum, 509 tpy of precious metal slime and 400,000 tpy of granulated slag. These are sold to domestic and international markets.This project adopted the Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting and Converting Process in the Smelter for anode casting, Contilanod process comprising Hazelett twin belt caster and a Mannesmann's travelling shear were selected. ISA stainless steel cathode process is applied in refinery. The combination of contilanod anode and stainless steel cathode ensured good cathode quality from the very beginning of start-up SO2 gas generated from Smelter is treated by Lurgi-Mitsubishi double contact/absorption acid plant. All contact. wastewater from the plant is treated in multistage wastewater treatment plant.Electricity and oxygen are ·supplied ""over the fence"" by a company which is located in the site of the Gresik Smelter and Refinery."

"The grain refinement and mechanical properties of 6061 aluminium alloy produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) have been analyzed in this present study. A innovative triple shear ECAP die was developed for the processing.It was observed that the grain refinement takes place for greater number of passes. It was also found that reducing the process temperature gives fine grain and high microhardness and hence improved propertiesIntroductionTechnological changes in manufacturing industries have depended heavily on development in materials processing and process technologies. Modem industries need high performance materials for severe service conditions. Hence, it is necessary to improve required material properties to achieve better performance and greater service life. As mechanical properties of the materials strong! y depend on grain size ( d) - Hall-Petch relationship [ 1-4], the ultrafine grained (UFG) materials offer superior mechanical properties based on the above relation.Synthesising massive nanocrystalline materials presents a challenge to basic research as well as to application-related processing efforts. Production of ultrafine gram microstructures in metals and alloys having different crystal structures but always an initially coarse microstructure using severe plastic deformation can significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) is an efficient method to induce ultra fine grained structure in materials by deforming it to large strains. Traditional techniques for introducing deformation of higher strains, such as forging, extrusion, drawing or rolling do have the inevitable limitation on required equipments of exerting enough load or pressure to cause uniform nanometer level grain refinement."

The Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act of .1970 provided the driving force for the current Magma Smelter configuration. The historical and technical perspectives of those process developments are reviewed. Innovations in procedures and equipment have allowed compliance with the requirements of the regulating authorities. The wet scrubbing of converter gasses and the monitoring of converter operations by a controlling foreman are two of the major contributors to these successes. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 have posed many new concerns for all U.S. industry, including the few (seven) primary copper smelters remaining. Future concerns include tightening the sulfur dioxide ambient standard from the current three-hour averaging period to one hour"

Ornamental compound stone are produced by industry for decades, however, few published studies describe these materials. Brazil has many deposits of stone wastes and a big potential to produce these materials. This work aims to evaluate the chemical resistance of ornamental compound stones produced with marble waste and unsaturated polyester. An adaptation of Annex H of ABNT NBR 13818:97 standard, with reagents commonly used in household products, was used. The results were compared with those obtained for natural stone used in composite production.

"Some experiments with different temperatures (1173, 1223, and l273K) and different annealing times (3, 4, 5, 6min) were carried out on cold-rolled plate of Fe-36Ni invar alloy. The microstructure and the mechanical properties were observed and tested respectively, and the fracture morphology was observed by SEM. The results show that with increasing of the temperature and the annealing time, the austenite grains gradually grow up accompanied by a small amount of annealing twin crystals, meanwhile, its plasticity and toughness are improved, and it is typical ductile fracture under the condition of tensile failure. After annealed at l223K, the invar alloy has better comprehensive properties than that at the other annealing temperatures, and the grains size is more uniform. Furthermore, when the annealing time is 4min, the invar alloy has the best comprehensive properties.IntroductionAs we known, most metals and alloys expand with increasing temperature. More than one hundred years ago (in 1897), Guillaume observed that Fe-Ni alloy with face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure, consisting of36%Ni, showing a very small thermal expansion coefficient below the ferro-to-paramagnetic transition, the thermal expansion coefficient around room temperature( <2 X 1O-6K-1 compared to most metallic materials which have a thermal expansion coefficient of 10-20 X 1O-6K-1) [1,2]. Since then, the subject has attracted many researchers, and various alloys with low thermal expansion coefficients have been developed. These alloys, generally known as ""invar alloys"", are in demand where dimensional changes due to variation in temperature must be minimized and where high stability is required [3, 4]."

"The CONSTEEL Process introduces a new concept in electric steelmaking by continuously feeding-preheating-melting and refining ferrous scrap or direct reduced iron. The process uses the furnace off-gas and fuel to preheat the scrap in a specially designed preheater. Thermal incineration of the flue gas reduces the carbon monoxide level to the more stringent requirements. Hot water or steam production from heat of flue gas is optional. The tap-to-tap time is set to match the cycle of the caster. The steel is treated via ladle metallurgy. The environment inside and outside of the steelplant is improved by decreasing levels of noise and hazardous emissions. Energy consumption decreases and disturbance to the electric network is eliminated. A CONSTEEL prototype was tested at Nucor Steel, Darlington, SC. A greenfield project is in the completion stage at the Florida Steel plant of Charlotte, NC, USA. The Process PhilosophyThe philosophy of the CONSTEEL Process is not solely to enhance efficiency; this was just a natural result of the change from a batch to a continuous practice. The primary objective in development was four-fold:1) 100% process control2) Rational use of available energy3) Improved environment inside and outside the plant4) Stability of energy input from the power systemIt was to make electric steelmaking more a science than an art and amenable to modern automation.The Basic Concept of CONSTEELThe concept of the process is shown in figure and includes basically a continuous feeding system, a preheater and a melting - refining furnace. A pre-established amount of heat is introduced into the scrap while traveling through the preheater using the sensible and chemical heat contained in the furnace off-gas and additional fuel. Melting-refining is carried out in the electric furnace. Slag formers, slag foaming additions and oxygen are injected to refine the melted steel continuously, to minimize the refractory erosion, to shield the arc, thus optimizing the transfer to the metal bath of the heat generated in the arc, to keep the bath homogeneous in composition and temperature and to produce carbon monoxide (CO) which is fuel for the preheater."

Cyanide is exceptionally reactive, and in typical gold/silver processing liquors, cyanide may be transformed into various species and forms depending on the mineralogy of the ore and chemical make-up of the process water. The exact speciation and relative concentrations depend on the Eh and pH values, as well as the free CN concentration in the system. Very good cyanide balances can be achieved by the judicious selection of the analytical techniques used. The choices an analyst has to make (which analytical methods to use and which ones to avoid) in order to gain better understanding of cyanide speciation and balances in a particular system under investigation will be discussed. Examples of cyanide balances obtained for the laboratory scale tests (agitated leach and column tests) will be presented and discussed.

Hematite precipitation is a convenient alternative for the removal of iron from leaching circuits because of its chemical stability, high density and high iron content. The precipitation of hematite from ferrous sulfate solutions was studied in a batch reactor. The precipitation occurs by two sequential steps: oxidation of the ferrous to ferric ions followed by hydrolysis of the ferric to hematite. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of the main operating variables on the rate of two steps of hematite precipitation. The variables studied included: stirring speed (100 to 600 rpm), temperature (160 to 200 ºC), concentration of sulfuric acid (1 to 10 g/L), initial iron concentration (1 to 15 g/L), and partial pressure of oxygen (1 to 6 atm). The sulfur content and the particle size of the solids that precipitated under various conditions were also determined. The results showed that at low temperature and high acid concentration the rate of Fe3+ hydrolysis is the step that controls the overall process. The variable that affects most the rate of Fe2+ to Fe3+ oxidation and the rate of hematite precipitation is the temperature.

During mineral and industrial processing, contaminated wastewater can be generated such as cyanide liquors (free species or in complex form). This paper presents the treatment of cyanide solution derived from the aluminum industry, by direct contact of the solution with thermal plasma in a novel reactor. The reacation energy is provided by a plasma submerged in solution which allows direct contact between the plasma and the solution to be treated. The scope of this&apos; study was to determine the feasibility of treating free and complex cyanides in solution through mini-pilot scale operations. An innovative reactor was designed and fabricated to provide stable: process operating conditions. Many parameters were studied. These experiments permitted the evaluation of the kinetics of complex cyanides decomposition under thermal plasma conditions. At atmospheric pressure (temperature about 100°C), the rate of cyanide decomposition by thermal plasma was 12 times greater than that of thermal hydrolysis in a plug flow reactor et the same temperature. The improvements in the decomposition rates are attributed to high thermal gradients at the plasma liquid interface and photocatalysis induced by the plasma UV radiation.

The copper mineralization of the Mesozoic Passaic Formation of New Jersey is typical of copper deposits in eastern North American Mesozoic sediments. Most such deposits are located at the base of the first of several basalt flows that are interbedded with continental, red-bed sediments. The copper mineralization is similar in most respects to that of the Keweenawan Basalts of the Lake Superior area. The first basaltic flow units of the eastern North American Mesozoic basins, and the Keweenawan Basalts, are continental quartz tholeiites of similar chemical composition and copper contents. The copper minerals and associated zeolite facies metamorphic mineral assemblages of these two rock units are also approximately the same. Stoiber and Davidson (1959) suggested that Keweenawan copper was mobilized and concentrated during metamorphism. The evidence pertaining to the Mesozoic copper deposits of New Jersey is consistent with such an interpretation and also with DeVore&apos;s (1955) suggestion that ore fluids commonly arise as a result of the mobility of metals under metamorphic conditions. There is additional evidence that final metamorphic concentration of Mesozoic copper was preceded by an initial stage of hydrothermal precipitation related to fluids emitted by basaltic magma.

Dust, or airborne particulate matter, from metal smelting can be either mechanically or thermally generated and it negatively affects the indoor air quality as well as the fugitive emissions from the plant. The thermally generated dust is often referred to as fume and it is typically generated whenever liquid metal comes into contact with air. For practical reasons, such as vehicle access, etc. it is often difficult to collect 100% of the fume. It is therefore highly desirable to develop processes and optimize operational procedures so that fuming can be kept to a minimum. In this series of experiments, the mechanism of active oxidation and fume formation from liquid silicomanganese under an impinging air jet in the temperature range 1400-1600°C has been explored. Characteristic properties of the fume have been established; particle diameter, shape, size distribution, and elemental composition are reported. The oxidation process is described in terms of vaporization, oxidation and agglomeration. In the boundary layer, two competing mechanisms seem to be operative in parallel: a direct oxidation of Mn vapor, and a two-step oxidation of silicon. The thermodynamic and kinetic conditions governing the two mechanisms are discussed.

Rosario Dominicana, S.A., operates a gold processing complex at Pueblo Viejo, northwest of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The plant processes approximately 10,000 mtpd of oxide gold-bearing ore with a work index of 11 kWh/mt. The ore hardness has increased to about 17 kWh/mt. Metallurgical auditing of the plant was conducted? to find ways to modify the circuit to process hard ore without sacrificing throughput. In addition, unit operations were optimized to increase recovery and reduce operating cost,. The results of modifications made in the plant are discussed in this paper.

The environmental impact assessment of the Imperial Smelting Process for metallic zinc and lead production in Shaoguan Smelter, China, was carried out by the life cycle assessment method. The detailed inventory analysis of the Input/Output in the process during 1998-2000 was conducted and the allocation was done among the main products of zinc, lead and sulfuric acid, according to the system expansion and substitution principle, The environmental impacts were assessed by using the following five Eco-indicators: Gross Energy Requirement (GER), Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Heavy Metal Toxicity&apos; (HMT) and Solid Waste Burden (SWB). The results from this study are useful to address the environmental situation of the technology practice in this smelter, and provide a scientific basis for the further improvement.

The distribution behavior of Pb between molten copper and FetO-SiO2 (-CaO, Al2O3) slags was investigated at 1473 K (1200 oC) and p(O2)=10-10 atm in view of the reaction mechanism of Pb dissolution into the slag. The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb) decreases with increasing CaO content (~6 mass pct) irrespective of Fe/SiO2 ratio (1.4~1.7). However, the addition of alumina into a slag with Fe/SiO2=1.5 linearly decreases the LPb, whereas a minimum value is observed at about 4 mass pct Al2O3 at Fe/SiO2=1.3. The log LPb continuously decreases with increasing Fe/SiO2 ratio, and the addition of Al2O3 (5 to 15 mass pct) into the silica-saturated iron silicate slag (Fe/SiO2 < 1.0) yields the highest Pb distribution ratio. The log LPb linearly decreases by increasing the log (Fe3+/Fe2+) value. The Pb distribution ratio increases and the excess free energy of PbO decreases with increasing Cu2O content in the slag. However, from the viewpoint of copper loss into the slag, the silica-saturated system containing small amounts of alumina is strongly recommended to stabilize PbO in the slag phase at a low Cu2O content.

A stratiform gold occurrence of Precambrian age located 20 miles southeast of Prescott, Arizona, within the Agua Fria Mining District, displays chemical, mineralogical, structural and lithological patterns indicative of a distal, exhalative volcanogenic environment. Metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Yavapai Series (1775-1820 m.y.) host the mineralization and are&apos;characterized by greenschist grade metamorphism, steeply-plunging penetrative folds and steeply-dipping schistosity. Mineralization is confined to a 100m thick stratigraphic section that is comprised of a series of thin auriferous massive sulfide beds and intercalated schist .containing disseminated sulfides. The mineralization extends more than 4km along strike. Coincident with, and largely confined to the mineralized strata, are anomalous amounts of As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn and Ag and associated silicification, sericitization and carbonatization. This exhalative mineralized system is interpreted to have been deposited in a paleo topographic low on the distal flank of a submarine rhyolite dome and to represent the final episode of a Precambrian volcanic cycle.

"Integrating environmental considerations into the product traditional process design is now the major challenge for steel industry. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is nowadays considered as an appropriate method for assessing environmental impact and selecting new technologies to reduce CO2 emissions for steel industry.In this paper we propose a new methodological concept which combines LCA thinking with process simulation software in order to carry out the life cycle inventory of classical steelmaking process.Using Aspen PlusTM software, a physicochemical model has been developed for the integrated steelmaking route. This model gives the possibility to carry out life cycle inventories for different operational practices in order to optimise the use of energy, to calculate CO2 and other emissions and to control the mass and the heat balances of processes.It is also shown that such approach can be used to design and assess new technologies for steelmaking without large industrial application.IntroductionDuring recent years, it was recognised that CO2 emissions are the major factor of the global warming effect. In order to meet Kyoto requirements, the steel industry is embracing the challenge of sustainable development by improving its competitiveness and economic success while reducing its environmental impacts. Integrating environmental considerations into the traditional product design process, for powerful eco-efficiency, is now one of the major priorities for steelmakers.The European Steel Industry has measured up to this challenge by creating ULCOS (Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking) consortium that has taken up the mission to develop breakthrough steelmaking process with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions (Eurofer, 2005). In order to develop technologies to reduce emissions, it is necessary to assess the environmental impact of the classical steelmaking route (coke plant, sinter plant, blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, continuous casting and hot rolling)."

The interactions of mineral-pyrite with T. ferrooxidans were studied by using a cyclic voltametry technique. The interactions with bacteria were carefully examined during the entire growth stage of bacteria (fermentation). Several very important discoveries were made. For example, the pyrite surface invariably drastically changed its properties at the second day of fermentation. Beyond two days of fermentation, the cyclic voltamograms were insensitive to convective diffusion produced by stirring. The SEM study revealed that bacteria populated the pyrite surface at an extremely high density levels. The high density of bacteria, and the solid reaction products formed on the pyrite surface created conditions for pore diffusion which explained why the CVs became insensitive to convective diffusion in solution (stirring).

"Crystal precipitation behavior of calcium ferrite (CF) during iron ore sintering process along with the effect of cooling rate, SiO2 and Al2O3 on crystalline condensation were studied. The results show that CF, has strong ability of precipitation. The precipitation is barely affected by extenal factors. It begins to precipitate when the liquid phase cools down to about 1200oC. CF could crystallize rapidly at the cooling speed of 150 °C /min. Furthermore, decreasing of the cooling rate favors the development of crystal. Binder phase transformed from CF system to silicate system when SiO2 content was increased to 5~6%, with a constant basicity (R) 2.0. Increasing Al2O3 content could promote the precipitation of CF and the development of crystal.IntroductionCrystalline condensation is the last stage of sinter mineralization. It includes the processes that crystalline substance and amorphous substance precipitate from high temperature solution phase and the consolidation of material when melt cools down. During the crystallization process, minerals precipitate following the order from high to low melting point coupled with the decreases of free energy. Most of binder phase minerals and part of iron oxides crystallize in this process, which have an important influence on mineral composition and microstructure of sinter. They finally determine the sinter strength and metallurgical properties."

The solvent extraction of yttrium and neodymium from copper pregnant leach solutions (PLS) using Primene JM-T, a primary aliphatic amine, has been studied. Effect of contact time, pH, sulfate concentration, and extractant concentration were investigated using synthetic and actual PLS systems. Standard experimental conditions were 5 minute contact time, pH ~2.5, and 10 % v/v Primene JM-T concentration. Distribution isotherms were constructed for the pure systems and for actual copper leach solutions. Synthetic solutions contained 100 ppm Y and ~75 ppm Nd. Samples of PLS contained 2 - 10 ppm Nd and 14 - 30 ppm Y. Results showed that complete extraction of both yttrium and neodymium occurred within five minutes and at pH values greater than 1. It was also found that sulfate concentration does not inhibit extraction at any concentration. Additionally, the distribution isotherms created show that extraction for these metals can operationally take place in one stage.

The Doe Run Company's Herculaneum, Missouri lead smelter has existed in continuous operation since 1892. Throughout the history of the plant extensive developments have been made to improve throughput, increase productivity, decrease operational costs and improve technology, while remaining an environmentally responsible producer of high quality primary lead in the international market. This paper provides an overview of the Herculaneum smelter, focusing on the most recent configuration of the operations. The paper includes discussion on all the aspects of primary lead production at the Herculaneum smelter.
