To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

Aqueous pressure oxidation at low temperature, although desirable from a process engineering and operating point of view, presents unique problems when temperatures approach 160°C (320°F). In developing the pressure oxidation process for the Lone Tree Mine, elemental sulfur formation and agglomeration with pyrite proved to be a problem. This paper discusses some of the unique features of the Lone Tree sulfide deposit and its amenability to low-temperature oxidation. Problems encountered during pilot plant operation and their solutions are discussed.

The Conneaut, Ohio, terminal of the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad was the first rail-to-ground-to-water coal terminal on the Great Lakes. Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. Immediate train turn-around independently of vessel arrivals. b. Winter storage of coal at the port, permitting year round shipment by the mines and year round operation of the railroad.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.

Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

INTRODUCTION Essentially three strategies are pursued in parallel for protecting the underground working force in mining against the consequences of methane ignitions which might lead to explosions: • Sufficient ventilation for avoiding the formation of explosive methane-air mixtures. • Avoiding sources of ignition caused possibly by electrical equipment or friction. • Structural explosion protection for limiting explosion propagation to the farthest-going extent for the case that methane is fired because of failing of the above preventive measures taken. The corresponding methods taken in mechanized roadheadings with point-attack roadheaders in German coalmining are subject of this paper. VENTILATION In ventilation of roadheading sites the following is to be considered in respect of methane control: • Sufficient air flows by volume being cycled to the heading face for diluting released methane to safe concentrations. • Sufficient local air velocities for effective mixing of methane and air in the whole heading site, in particular directly on the heading face and underneath the roof. Furthermore, ventilation needs to be laid out in a way that cut- ting does not result in health affecting dust exposure at any working place. Accordingly, the ventilation systems shown on Fig. 1 including primary and, if necessary, secondary auxiliary ventilation air ducts as well as dedusters, are used in roadheadings. This equipment is run according to the following principles: • If the roadheader is at standstill, the heading face is ventilated by the free air jet from the blowing duct closest to the face. In this operation phase the deduster is shut-down. • During cutting, the exhaust of the blowing air duct is automatically closed, and the deduster is taken into operation. The in- coming fresh air is now locally discharged via a lateral orifice, or distributed by Coanda-type ducts from the primary or secondary ventilation air duct. In this way, a stable dust wall not disturbed by the jet of the air duct is formed in front of the heading face. Only the ventilation air stream taken in by suction of the close-to-face deduster is passed through the inby zone of the heading face (over approx. 20 m). The clean exhaust of the deduster is dischayed to the roadway in some distance outby. Immediately at the heading face, methane accumulations possibly released by cutting are diluted by compressed-air jets from air-movers located near the roof which assure more rapid motion of the air without distuhing the dust wall. • In the zone of overlapping of primary and secondary duct and the deduster - that zone possibly is poorly ventilated during cutting - sufficient local air speed is assured by Coanda-type ducts or additional ventilation jets for avoiding methane accumulation. The regulations of the inspectorate specifies geometrical conditions to be met with these configurations of ventilation equipment. In-seam roadways are ventilated at rates > 0,5 m/s. For dedusters, present-day ventilation air flows are of 600-800 m+/ min. Ventilation monitoring and control is assured by units for measuring methane and ventilation air flows. If pre-set thresholds are exceeded or fallen short of, these measuring units shut-down - dependent on potential hazard - any not intrinsically safe electrical equipment in the roadheading, either totally or in limited zones. In addition, CO-measuring units near the roadway en- trance serve for early detection of mine fires. In spite of this ventilation layout and the equipment used and in spite of the water spray systems on the cutting head (discussed later in this paper) several cases of methane ignition and subsequent burning off (however, no explosions) have been recorded in the recent past. Therefore, the above-described ventilation is nowadays complemented in many cases by machine-mounted ventilation equipment for the immediate surroundings of the cutting head. Ventilation of the surroundings of the cutting head Investigations carried out subsequent to the above-mentioned gas ignitions have shown that the high ventilation air speed necessary for rapid dilution of methane could not permanently be arrived at in the following zones: • The direct zone of cutting, in particular during sumping. • The floor zone above the debris, predominantly below the cut- ting head. Accordingly, VOEST ALPINE-Bergtechnik, a producer of mining machinery, in cooperation with DMT developed for point- alttack roadheaders a novel machine-mounted ventilation equipment, the Jet-Block" (AERO SAFE Jet-Block) shown on Fig. 2. This system allows to ventilate the above-mentioned critical zones with high flow speeds. One AS Jet-Block is mounted on each side of the boom approx. 0.5 m behind the cutting head. The blocks discharge compressed-air jets with high energy from 10 nozzles per block into the hazardous zones (Fig. 3). Two nozzles of each jet block are tangentially oriented toward the upper circumference of the cutting head, the others are arranged fan-like with orientation to the heading face underneath the cutting head and the debris. This paper deals with drilling large diameter shafts for the mining and construction industry with diameters in excess of 3 feet to more than 20 feet in diameter. It discusses appropriate applications of the rotary drill method, linings for large diameter shafts, circulation systems,, and the limitations of the method. Each specific rotary drill method is determined by the geology of the area, the depth to be drilled and the formation fluids encountered. Shaft lining or casing must be improved to result in lighter weight, higher strength and lower cost. All phases of rotary drilling equipment must be improved to drill shafts in excess of 10 feet in diameter. As these goals are reached, more shafts of large diameter will be drilled by the rotary method for the mining and construction industry.

The rational and optimal determination of the design of a mining exploitation is a very intricate and difficult problem : the parameters are numerous, some technical, some economic or technico-economic which cannot be fully controlled; beside, deposits are estimated from very limited information and the choice criteria are not always quantitative, the economic context has to be anticipated by several years, and even the technological limits can change tomorrow. So, although very clever and performing numerical algorithms have been developed in recent years for open-pit design, we consider that this problem has not really been solved satisfactorily until now. The reasons are that people have concentrated their efforts on informatical algorithmical problems, and have assumed that the technical and economical data are well defined at the time of the study, which is generally not true. In particular, the mere fact of assigning dollar- values to blocks in order to maximize the total cash-flow is generally unrealistic because of the uncertainty of the data used. Consequently, the significance of the unique pit obtained as a result of these algorithms is questionable.

The key objective of forming a cartel is to increase profits to members of the cartel by taking the following action: a) control output; and b) control price. However, while attempting to obtain monopoly profits the cartel members have to contend with costs associated with cartelization and such costs include the following: political costs; the cost of coordinating output and price; organizational costs (such as cheating); and administrative costs (such as the cost of attending cartel meetings). The objective of commodity exchanges is to provide an open, free market where buyers and sellers may openly complete transactions and pricing information can be immediately disseminated. These transactions include the following: a) to provide facilities for "hedging", or transferring price risk from buyers and sellers of physical commodities to "speculators" through the medium of buying and selling futures contracts, and b) taking physical delivery of metal on due dates.

This paper presents a summary of the current employment practices with respect to recent graduates in Mining Engineering, as observed at the Colorado school of Mines. Because our experience is limited to our own group of students it prob¬ably does not correspond exactly to that experienced at other mining schools, but because the Colorado School of Mines graduates approximately 15 per cent of the men in this field our experience is probably representative. We have chosen to limit the information presented here to that pertaining to the period since July 1, 1960. This corresponds to the experience with the class of 1961 and to the experience of the class of 1962 up to the end of the first semester of the senior year. There were 36 mining engineering degrees given in 1961 In a class numbering 43 senior. We expect to give 30 first degrees in 1962 in a class numbering 44 seniors.

This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

Tube furnace experiments have been performed to evaluate the lime roasting of pyrite in air. The sulfur volatilized was measured over time. Variables studied included: form of lime, sodium sulfate additions, temperature, air flow rate, lime to pyrite weight ratio and pyrite particle size. It was found that more than 98% of the sulfur can be retained at a reactor temperature of 650°C, with a slight excess of calcium hydroxide. The roast products are primarily hematite and calcium sulfate.

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

This research is the result of a geotechnical study carried out in a natural slope in an Open Pit mine in Southern Peru, highlighting earthquakes as an important cause of instability within the case study presented. This leads to analyze the stability of a slope, according to the safety factor and thus consider a future construction in its environment according to the identified requirements. There are known disasters at national and international level that involve human lives because of the lack of analysis of slope stability conditions, which based on the results will allow to control and to take adequate corrective measures. These mass movements are classified whether they are soils or rocks, considering the mechanism and type of rupture, as well as the presence of water, the speed and magnitude of the movement. The movement problems are due to factors of inherent nature and constitute a reason to perform a calculation study to analyze and estimate the safety factor of each of the evaluated cases

The system produces better operation control than existing algorithms. Furthermore, it provides planning tools for choosing equipment and finding an equilibrium between the quality and quantity of production.

 The paper combines theoretical and experimental analysis to improve the accuracy of predicting paste yield stress by slump flow. It derives an analytical model of slump flow for yield stress, providing a theoretical basis for quantifying the rheological properties of paste with slump flow. The study uses three different tailings-prepared pastes and constructs an empirical yield stress model, showing high accuracy and good generality.

On the job injuries to the musculoskeletal system are probably the oldest of the industrial safety problems. Long before we had pinchpoints to guard, chemical vapors to ventilate, and noise to enclose, people were getting strains, sprains, and sore backs from their work activities. In spite of the age of the problem, it remains a long way from being solved. The past ten years have seen a significant commitment by the sci¬entific community to understanding the problem. Engineers, scientists, doctors, and epidemi¬ologists have been involved, and as a result, today we have a much better understanding of the problem. The first step in understanding a problem such as this is to explore its history and epidemiology. The research done by Chaffin (1977), Snook (1970), Ayoub (1978), the ILO (1962), and others, led NIOSH to publish its Work Practices Guide for Manual Lifting in 1981. The guide was based on research carried out in general industry, but subsequent research by Stobbe (1983) and Peters (1983) has suggested that the nature of the problems producing injuries in underground mining is the same as in general industry. The problems are more intense in the mining environment.

A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. St. Joseph Lead Company has been paying incentive bonuses for well over 40 years. In 1958 almost half of St. Joe's 1,860 employees in Southeast Missouri received some form of incentive bonus in addition to their guaranteed wages. There are very few payroll jobs in St. Joe s Southeast Missouri organization that lend themselves to a reasonably good measurement of production or quality, or both, where an incentive bonus is not paid. The term "Incentive Bonus" is used to differentiate betwen bonuses that are based on quantity or quality of work, and those that are merely additional pay of a standard amount per hour or day because of an employee being temporarily assigned to some unusual task, An employee temporarily assigned to a job where the working conditions make the job performance unusually difficult or where a special skill is used is often given a bonus of some standard amount per hour or shift in addition to his usual rate. This is merely a convenient way of paying something extra without disturbing the normal rate structure. Actually, it is differential pay similar to that almost universally paid for evening and night shift work. Bonuses of that type are not being considered in this paper. The basic reason or theory for paying incentive bonuses 9s to get improved production at lower cost, Unfortunately, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find a yardstick by which it can be definitely proved that a particular bonus plan is accomplishing its purpose, It becomes, then, a matter of judgment on the part of management personnel as to the value of the bonus plan. The fact that St. Joe Lead Company has continued to pay bonuses for over 40 yews and has increased the number of bonus schedules used attests to a definite belief that they are beneficial to the company's successful operations.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."
