GENERAL DESCRIPTION History The most striking feature of mining in the United States has been the infrequent use of longwall systems. This system, which accounts for the majority of coal production in Europe, Japan, and other countries, is only recently growing out of its infancy in the mining of normal coal seams and is still untried in the mining of thick coal seams in the US. Its use in the mining of metal and nonmetal ore bodies has been virtually ig¬nored, except for isolated instances in trona, copper, and uranium. Longwall mining is believed to have originated in Shropshire, England, towards the end of the 17th cen¬tury (Laird, 1973). Although the method used would be considered primitive by today's standards, many of the basic concepts have remained unchanged. Longwall mining of coal in the US was first introduced before the turn of the century, but it never gained acceptance as it did in Europe. Historically, longwalling was a cyclic method where a single cut of coal was removed from the face on the producing shift each day, and the work of building stone packs in the gob and manually moving roof support was completed on the off shifts. Due to the amount of dead work, productivity was extremely low. In Europe, however, longwall methods were required despite the high costs involved, because only by this method could coal under heavy depth be mined with any reasonable degree of recovery. Reserves of coal lying under shallow cover, and therefore minable by room¬and-pillar methods, were long ago inadequate to supply most of Europe's coal requirements. In the US coal min¬ing has historically proceeded laterally with the new mines in virgin areas to replace old mines; in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries, mining must proceed downward to greater depths. The depth of cover for most coal operations in the US is shallow, i.e., 61 to 305 m (200 to 1000 ft). This, combined with large reserves, has made room-and-pillar methods almost universally applicable. However, longwall systems were tried around the turn of the century. Whenever used, it was frequently noted that the opera¬tion was under the direction of men with foreign ex¬perience and was tried under ideal conditions. Some of the mines that were using longwall or had tried longwall prior to 1910 were the Radiant mine, CO; Vinton Coal Co., PA; Cambria Steel Co., Johnstown, PA; Grundy County and Spring Valley, IL; and unnamed mines in Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Kansas. As late as 1961, there was one circular longwall in operation at Centerville, IA. The first modern-day op¬eration to take advantage of European technology and longwall methods was Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine near Price, UT. Due to deep cover and extremely poor roof conditions, combined with a need for in¬creased production, Kaiser management decided a new method was required and turned to longwall in 1961. The first longwall consisted of an Anderson Mavor shearer loader, British Jeffrey-Diamond conveying equip¬ment, and Dowty roof supports with a capacity made up of two and three 27-t (30-st) capacity props. After nor¬mal start-up problems, this unit averaged over 454 t (500 st) per shift (White and Palacios, 1976). During and after World War II, technology in hy¬draulics and controls had advanced to the point that self-advancing supports and hydraulic props were being developed. In 1960 only I % of West German produc¬tion was from mechanized longwall faces. This in¬creased to 37% in 1970 and 63% in 1973 (Kohlgruber, 1974). In 1976 there were 246 coal mines operating in the United Kingdom. Although this is only 50% of those operating ten years ago, the production has increased 42%, mainly through improvements in longwall equipment and methods (Hunter, 1976). In France and other European countries, the devel¬opment of longwall mechanization has been similar in seams up to 2.44 m (8 ft) thick. In seams that exceed 9.14 m (30 ft), a variety of longwall caving has been developed for coal seams with dips of 0 to 1.6 rad (0 to 90°). Those with the greatest success will be discussed later. As noted, the development of longwall mining to its present state of the art has mainly taken place since World War II with substantial gains in the last ten years. Mechanized longwall has been the result of several re¬lated major innovations (Jackson, 1975) 1) Development of the flexible armored face con¬veyor which can be installed along the face and moved forward without disassembly. 2) Development of face machines such as single and double drum shearer and coal plows which operate in conjunction with the armored conveyors. 3) Development of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports which now include chocks, chock shields, and shields. 4) Reliance of caving of the immediate roof based on proper planning and development. 5) Use of pneumatic slowing to enable extraction below overbuilt areas. The most recent developments in the mining of coal by longwall in the US include the introduction of shield supports at Kaiser's York Canyon mine in New Mexico, single-entry longwall development at Kaiser's Sunnyside mine, and Mid-Continent's advancing longwall system in Colorado. Metal and nonmetal longwall systems in the US have included the mining of copper at White Pine, MI; uranium in Utah and New Mexico, and trona in Wyoming.

6.1 PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING GROUTING OPERATIONS FOR SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS The planning of integrated grouting of vertical, inclined or horizontal underground workings in saturated, fractured rock includes the following phases: 1. Planning for the collection and analysis of geological information concerning the characteristics of the struc¬tural deformation(s) that produced the details of the frac¬ture system being studied. 2. Planning for the acquisition of initial hydrogeological information produced by the flowmetric and hydrody¬namic investigations (described in Chapters 2 and 3). 3. Computing the initial engineering calculations of the ex¬pected or planned dimensions of the isolation curtains for each water-producing stratum (fracture zone) and the expected areal spreading pattern of the grout in each of these water-producing horizons. The selection of the lo¬cations, the initial optimal number of holes and the vol¬ume of grout needed to create each isolation curtain also are included in this phase. 4. The selection or development of a grout formula for the specific hydrogeological conditions that exist at the site. 5. Identification of a resource (deposit) required to produce the grouting clay. The planning of grouting operations must be supported by the acquisition of all necessary initial data, which in¬cludes: 1. The geographic location and administrative responsibil¬ity (ownership and regulatory constraints) of the mineral deposit and any peculiar features of the area where ex¬cavation of the underground workings is planned. The surface relief, the hydrographic network of the region, and the local climatic conditions must be evaluated prior to planning for buildings and waste discharges if any. 2. The economic status of the region, the available trans¬portation, the nature of the energy base, the water and heat supply sources, the location of construction mate¬rials suitable for making the grout all must be deter¬mined. 3. The geological and hydrogeological characterization of the work site must be accomplished. 4. The technical features of the shaft(s) and underground works must be characterized. 5. The organization's principal initial design plan features and the construction sequence of all buildings and struc¬tures must be developed. These must be correlated with the organization and schedule for excavating the under¬ground works. The technical characterization of a shaft or of other un¬derground workings must contain information about the purpose of the workings, the design depth, the planned excavation procedures along with cross-sections, and the parameters of the lining, if a lining is required. The geology of the section to be penetrated must include geological data obtained from existing exploration activities at the mineral deposit and conclusions about the shaft ex¬cavation conditions obtained from drilling technical moni¬toring holes and exploration drillholes. The interpreted stratigraphic regime, including the thickness, strike and dip of each stratum, must be shown in cross-section. The tec¬tonics, including all geologic structures, must be presented by cross-sections. The bedding orientations must be used to identify anticlines, synclines, monoclines and faults. The lithologic composition and the drillability of the rock com¬prising the section must be examined. The character of the rock's fracture pattern must be presented. Finally the per¬meability, porosity and storage characteristics of each aqui¬fer must be determined by in situ hydraulic property testing (injection tests or pumping tests, as described in Chapter 3). The fracture pattern of the indurated rock is presented in reports derived from geo-exploration borehole studies and from studies of outcrops on the surface and in all nearby underground workings. The extent of each fracture zone is mapped in three dimensions. The distribution of fracture apertures, the nature of the fractures according to each litho¬logic stratum, and the relationship of bedding planes to each fracture system are all determined. Acoustic logs, downhole cameras, caliper logs, oriented core, and any other appro¬priate geophysical tools available are used to construct the data base for this purpose. The hydrogeological characterization of the geologic section to be penetrated by the workings is based on the analysis of hydrogeological data collected during the drill¬ing and testing of technical monitoring holes and from in¬formation on ground water inflow collected during the ex¬cavation of nearby underground workings, if such workings exist. The hydrogeologic characterization must contain the following information: 1. The identification of all aquifers, their thicknesses and their locations in the section, 2. The distribution of hydrostatic head in the ground water in three dimensions, 3. The coefficient of saturated hydraulic conductivity (per¬ meability) of each aquifer, 4. The porosity and storativity of each aquifer, and 5. The projected rate of water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel for each aquifer prior to grouting. This step is used to identify the zones to be grouted.

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

Volumetric mass transfer coefficients and gas holdups were measured in a concentric tube airlift reactor designed for the microbial desulfurization of coal. The slurries were comprised of an acidified basal salts solution containing thirteen different weight percents of coal (74 µm Ohio #1) at three temperatures. An enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient, KLa, with respect to that measured in pure solution was found at weight percents of 5 (volume fraction solids, ES = 0.035) or less, the greatest enhancement being as great as 37% at approximately 2 weight percent (ES = J 0.014). At higher solids fractions, the mass transfer coefficient decreased with further solids additions, decreasing by as much as 91% at 40 weight percent coal (ES = 0.315). KLa increased with temperature at all solids concentrations, the greatest increase being 392% at 72°C vs that measured at 30°C. Gas holdup, EG decreased with all increases in solids loading by as much as 65% and increased by as much as 67% with temperature. KLa and EG were correlated with operating conditions separately, and the separate correlations combined to yield overall correlations for the mass transfer coefficient and for the gas holdup. The correlations are suitable for inclusion in system models devised earlier for microbial coal desulfurization processes, and may be used for design, operation and cost estimation for such systems.

The Gibralter Mines Ltd. complex is 61 km (38 miles) north of Williams Lake in central British Columbia, Fig. 1. The discovery of these deposits evolved in stages such that each stage revealed a bigger piece of the elephant. When the elephant was mostly revealed, Placer Development Ltd. brought the property into production. Although Gibralter is aporphyry copper deposit, it is certainly not a typical one. Copper and minor molybdenum mineralization occur in a foliated and saussuritized quartz diorite. Ore bodies tend to be tabular in form because foliation exerts a major control on localizing mineralization. A generalized geologic map of the Gibralter-Pollyanna area is shown in Fig. 2. Mineralization was first identified in 1917 in the Pollyanna area. Several shallow pits were sunk on flashy, but low grade, lenticular quartz veins. Duval Corp. made the initial commercial discovery, the Pollyanna ore body, on what were then called the Pollyanna claims. These claims, staked by R.C. Glen and C. Gennis in 1963, were the first to be optioned by Duval in British Columbia in October 1964. Placer Development joined Duval in late 1966 as a 50% joint venture partner, and after optioning the adjoining Gibralter claims, proceeded to evaluate and develop the four ore bodies that make up the Gibralter deposit. The Gibralter claims south of the Pollyanna claims provided the name for the Gibralter deposit.

The principles of classification of reserves and resources in the Soviet Union were developed in 1960. Mineral reserve calculations were reviewed by the State Committee on Reserves for approval, then registered in the State List of Mineral Deposits and included in the State Balance of the Reserves. In 1981, however, a new "System of Classification of Reserves and Resources of Mineral Deposits" was adopted. This classification system (Table 1) is still used today in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It subdivides mineral concentrations into seven categories in three major groups, based on the level of exploration performed: explored reserves (A, B, C,), evaluated reserves (C) and prognostic resources (P1, P2, P3). Explored reserves Explored reserves are calculated within exploration contours. Category A The A category is the highest level of classification for any given mineral deposit and requires comprehensive exploration. First, the ore body's position, shape and structure must be accurately delineated (Fig. 1). Next, the mineralogy of the ore body must be studied to determine its composition and properties as well as the distribution of both ore and detrimental components. It is also necessary to outline the blocks of barren rocks and limits of subeconomic ores and to distinguish between the different types, grades and physical-chemical properties (mineral texture and structure) of the ore, the

I INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authorities (WMATA) rapid transit system (METRO), currently under construction, will have a total length of 98 miles. Forty-eight of these miles are underground and require either open cut excavations or tunnels. Despite stringent construction controls, it is inevitable that some ground settlement will occur adjacent to the deep open cut earth excavations and large diameter earth tunnels. It is therefore essential to underpin nearby important structures to prevent excessive differential settlements and Fig. 1 presents the METRO criteria for this underpinning. This paper describes the underpinning methods currently used on METRO and evaluates the effectiveness of each method. II DESCRIPTION OF SUBSURFACE STRATA The foundation materials in the Washington, D.C. area are extremely variable. Fig. 2 presents an idealized profile showing typical subsurface strata. The engineering properties of each stratum have been determined by extensive exploration and testing programs. Fill: Washington, D.C. fills consist of every variety of soil and rubble. They are not important to this study because no underpinning is founded on fill material. The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

Many factors, some of which are not easily defined or described, must be considered in the design of a hydraulic backfill system. After participating in the design of several plants, I have a conviction that future refinements in sandfill systems must come in large part, from the merging of good design ideas and information from existing operating plants. It is important then, that we document and publish information on existing plant designs and their operating characteristics. This information will then be available for use by our successors and later innovators in hydraulic fill placement. The Mayflower hydraulic sandfill system is similar to other plants. The intent of this paper is to describe only this system's unique design and operating characteristics. I will not describe in any detail, the familiar elements of the system. I will document some of the observed hydraulic characteristics of the system, elaborate on some of the design situations that had to be solved, and will discuss operating factors that are not generally described in our technical literature.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. In these equations: •W is the total weight; •A, B and C are the fractional proportions of each potential blend stocks; •Sa, Sb and Sc represent the percent sulfur content of the blend stocks; •Ha, Hb and Hc represent the calorific content of the blend stocks in Btu/lb; and •H and S represent calorific and sulfur contents of the composite blend. INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). Elastic-plastic constitutive equations The basic assumption is that the yield surface in stress space depends on one parameter, namely the plastic volume strain, as the data on Boise sandstone suggested. Starting from this point, the theory formulated in stress space and in strain space by Naghdi and his co-workers (1975, 1981) can be simplified. The simplified yield function is

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group&apos;s new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem&apos;s work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Introduction A well-designed mining plan is one that minimizes cost and mining induced problems and maximizes recovery of the coal reserve. To minimize the negative effects on surface structures caused by ground subsidence due to underground mining activities, two kinds of practices are commonly employed by mine operators. One is the support technique, which leaves an area of coal unmined or partially mined beneath the structure to be supported. The other is the protection technique, which protects the structure when it is subsiding with the ground by taking advantage of the ground subsidence process (Luo et al., 1992). In designing the supporting technique, the only currently available method in the US is the one stated in the Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985). However, the size of the support area designed by this method will be excessively large and result in a wasteful use of coal reserves when the overburden depth is more than 350 ft. A more scientific method is proposed in this paper for designing the support area. This method is based on a large amount of subsidence data collected throughout a number of major US coal fields and the authors&apos; experience with monitoring and protecting surface structures that have been undermined by longwall panels. It considers the critical deformation indices that a structure can tolerate, and depth and height of underground extraction. A support area designed by this new method will not only assure the safety of the structure to be supported but will also maximize the extraction of the coal reserve. Design of support area using the Pennsylvania rules The Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985) state that no underground mining activity should be permitted beneath structures where the overburden depth is less than 100 ft. An exception to these rules is provided for mine related openings that provide access to the surface for such as entries, shafts, boreholes and site-specific variances for entry development. If the overburden depth is greater than 100 ft, the mine operators should utilize either of the following: •Extraction techniques that provide for planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner, or •Support techniques designed to prevent subsidence damages to features identified as: •Public buildings and non-commercial structures [ ] customarily used by the public, including churches, schools and hospitals • Dwellings, cemeteries, municipal public service operations and municipal utilities in place on April 27,1966 •Impoundments and other water bodies with a storage capacity of 20 acre-ft or more • Aquifers, perennial streams and water bodies that serve as a significant source for a public water supply system, and •Coal refuse disposal areas. The support techniques require that a support area be left beneath the surface structure or feature to be protected (Fig.1). The support area should consist of coal pillars, with their size and pattern being such that their bearing strength is maximized. The total coal extraction within the support area should be limited to a maximum of 50%. The support area should be rectangular in shape and determined by projecting a line at a 15° angle from the surface to the coal seam with an offset distance of 15 ft from all sides of the structure. Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). Mine developers commonly undertake projects that require more funds than they can invest themselves. From that point until they are able to complete a "bankable" feasibility study, they require access to venture capital. In the United States, most venture capital has been provided to the small mining segment of the industry through tax advantaged limited partnerships. Recent changes in Federal tax law makes other forms of financing competitive, and the use of corporations and private and public offerings of shares may soon become more popular ways of securing venture capital. A number of new financial services firms have entered the mining finance business in recent years. They provide mine developers with access to venture capital.

A new magnetic liner, with unique magnetic circuit and novel structure designs, was developed. It was characterized by light weight, low noise, as well as corrosive and abrasive resistance. The wear rate of the magnetic liner was one twentieth and one ninth those of the manganese-alloy steel and rubber ones respectively. The forming mechanism of the protective layer and that of influencing factors on magnetic liners were also investigated. The research results could not only instruct using magnetic liner, but also widen their application.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

Groundwater freezing was used to stabilise 8m thick beds of saturated and weakly cemented sands at a depth of 170m, during driving of twin 1 in 4,5.2m o.d. circular drifts from the surface to the Coal Measures through 600m of Permo-Triassic strata. Instrumentation was installed during erection of the lining in frozen and unfrozen ground to measure ground and groundwater pressures on the lining and ground temperatures up to lm into the frozen ground. Observations showed that following thawing, effective lining stresses in the frozen zone were low, indicating minimum strata disturbance during freezing and subsequent machine excavation. Groundwater pressures were lower than expected.

Based on previous investigations of ultrafine comminution in planetary ball mills, a new centrifugal mill has been developed which permits similar high stress conditions. Because this new type of mill is equipped with an immobile chamber, devices for measuring energy, for cooling the milling vessel, as well as, in continuous operation, for material feed and discharge can be more easily attached than to planetary ball mills. Observations of particle behaviour have shown that, in the case of dry grinding, most of the material is found on the mill walls even after short grinding times. Due to the fact that energy dissipation takes place mainly in the zone near the wall, a grinding system which reduces the amount of ball filling required is at an advantage.
