The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. Horizontal stresses are caused by global platetectonic forces. During 1995 alone they were largely responsible for the closing of two longwall mines in the United States. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions at the headgate caused by horizontal-stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements that were made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal-stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather it is 20o in the stress shadow of the gob. Then the researcher must know the structure and composition of the mineral and its physical and chemical properties. Can these properties be changed by processing particle size and shape modification, and surface chemical treatment? Examples of tactical R & D in the industrial minerals area will be described.

Recently, research efforts have been made to lower the magnesium content of phosphate rock concentrate to be a suitable feed for phosphoric acid production and other related industries. Among these efforts is the bioprocessing technique. However, this study is devoted to study of using an enzyme, extracted from coffee waste, as a surface modifier during the fatty acid flotation of calcareous phosphate rock. A mixture of oleic acid and kerosene was used as collector. Factors, which affect the enzyme activity such as enzyme dosage, solution pH, temperature and conditioning time, were studied. Under the appropriate conditions, a concentrate product containing less than 0.60% MgO was achieved from the Abu Tartur feed (1.80% MgO) with a P2O5 recovery of more than 94%.

P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Mining companies and governments at both the local and national levels recognize that Participatory Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance Committees (PEMSC) are necessary mechanisms for meaningful engagement at the community level. In many cases, PEMSCs are established as volunteer initiatives by mining companies or by the mining communities themselves. In Peru however, they can also be recommended by the government as way to address social conflict. Most PEMSCs are launched while a mine is in operation and have the objective of monitoring both water quality and quantity. Many established committees are currently evolving and adopting a more comprehensive approach, as well as expanding their initial scope from a river or micro-basin focus and watchdog agenda, to a broader regional integrated resources management view. This paper examines the origins of Participatory Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance Committees in Peru. It also discusses the typology of these committees, and the scope of their work. Furthermore, it looks at the challenges faced by these committees, as well as existing opportunities for mining companies, governments, and civil society. Finally, this study presents a governance model that could contribute to the long-term existence of these committees. This discussion is further informed by the results of a national workshop that took place in October 2016 in Peru, in which over 200 representatives from 22 monitoring committees, government and mining companies participated.

A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

Coal is a term applied to vegetable matter (trees, grasses, etc.) which was subjected to heat and pressure through geologic ages. This resulted in a change in both the physical and chemical properties. Because its chemical composition is variable, geologists classify coal as a heterogeneous mineral rather than a homogeneous mineral. Peat represents the initial, unconsolidated stage in the development of coal. This coalification continues with time and the application of temperature and pressure to lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite toward the theoretical graphite end member.

At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. The stability of a hemispherical cavity, intended to model a perforation opening in the vicinity of a borehole, is analyzed for the case of poroelastic-plastic material behavior. Two plasticity models of differing complexity are considered, with the emphasis in either model being the use of strain softening to calculate inelastic stiffness. Sample results illustrate the effect of steady fluid flow on the response, and possible collapse, of the near perforation region.

This paper presents an overview of some of the basic issues related to tunnel construction in the presence of flammable and toxic strata gases. Gas properties and possible sources are outlined for the various gases that are commonly encountered underground. Assessment of potential gas hazards prior to construction is discussed. Measures for mitigating the problem during construction are summarized. INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. Introduction During the 13 years since C. C. White introduced the Birmingham roof truss there has been a revolution in permanent roof support technology. While not all of the emerging concepts have their origins in the truss-resin bolting is a prime example - the combinations and permutations of devices presently available to the underground mining industry reflect a well-spring of creative activity. The purpose of this report is to chronicle a number of roof support system that have same physical similarity to the Birmingham truss, and to report on their application. Definitions The application of the tern "truss" to the device developed by White of the Birmingham Bolt Company in 1967 may be derived from the classical technique of stifwood, by the attachment of an underslung, sometimes pretensioned metal strap, rod or cable. If the beam is separated from the reinforcement by a single block or vertical post it is called a "King's Post Truss". If two equally spaced blocks or posts are used it is referred to as "Queen's Post". When the immediate roof of a mine is visualized as a beam, the Birmingham device completes a structure resembling this latter form.

In this investigation, the differences in the absorption spectra of etheramines, fatty amines and condensates, mostly present as acetates, from several suppliers are characterized by means of infrared spectrometry. Sharp differences were observed in the absorption spectra of three types of amines and derivatives. Etheramines show a characteristic and well-defined peak at 1,114 cm-1. This peak is due to the ether C-O group and differentiates etheramines from the other classes. The absence of such a peak indicates that the species is not an etheramine. The distinction between condensates and fatty amines is made by the presence of a sharp peak around 3,200 cm-1. This peak is probably due to the proximity of the N-H amine groups and C=O carbonyl groups in the amide portion of the condensate's molecule and by different and better-defined bands in the 1,800- to 1,500-cm-1 range. The flotation performance of these amines was evaluated by means of the laboratory-scale flotation of an itabirite ore. The etheramines proved to be the most effective collectors for this system. Monoamines presented better performance than diamines for the ore under investigation.

The Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada, commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable affecting the structural characteristics of the calcine, which in turn affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature has been closely monitored since October 2000. The original design temperature was 550° C. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500° C resulted in a gold recovery increase of more than six percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an ?intelligent? process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures, thus obtaining high gold recoveries of 92 to 93 percent. Under these conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease in gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g., porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. Land use impact assessment for mining is time- consuming and expensive. Because of mining’s impact on biodiversity, land use assessment methods that evaluate biodiversity are important for mining land use impact assessments. Remote sensing, in particular satellite multispectral sensing platforms such as Sentinel‑2 and the Landsat mission series, have been used to assess and quantify biodiversity through proxy variables such as NDVI (Peña-Lara et al., 2022). The objective of this paper is to present results of a comparative study of land use and biodiversity based on multispectral satellite observations and production data from copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We quantify the relationship between different spectral bands and vegetative indices and the production data provided by the mining companies and measure correlations. The results suggest that remote sensing could be a cost- effective means of assessing biodiversity impacts of mining.

Along with kyanite and sillimanite, andalusite forms part of the sillimanite industrial minerals trimorphous alumina-silicate group. Theoretically, andalusite contains about 60% A1203 and 40% Si02, with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0-3.2. Andalusite generally occurs in the contact metamorphic zones of schists and shales, constituting about 10% of the ground mass ore body. The 5- to 20mm- (0.2- to 0.8-in.-) long crystals are usually liberated through crushing and magnetic/heavy-media separation. Relatively minor occurrences of andalusite are found in Andalusia, Spain (where it was first identified), Portugal, the former Soviet Union, Ghana, South Korea, California and North Carolina. It also occurs in China, France and South Africa. The latter two represent nearly all the andalusite that is exported. Andalusite is an inert refractory raw material that does not require calcining before use. It involves an internal conversion to mullite after heating to 1400° to 1600° C (2552° to 2912° F). At higher temperatures of about 1800° C (3272° F), the mullite converts to corundum and liquid silica.
