Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

Current competitive demands on the process industries stimulate the need for improved operating efficiencies and compliance to stricter governmental regulations. Emerging information technologies allow narrowing the gap between management business objectives and the process control level. Benefits come from enhanced energy management, operating costs reduction, enhanced scheduling of activities, reduced quality giveaway, enhanced market driven production and enhanced decision making. Plant management systems integrate economic performance monitoring by controlling the business rather than just throughput and product quality. Sound business based decisions about how to operate the plant can be achieved by adequate dynamic performance monitoring at the plant level and the enforcement of the desired targets at the process control level. This paper describes some of the key requirements to implement a process management system to meet stricter process performance standards. Extensions are made to facilitate conforming with regulations established by various governmental and industry monitoring agencies.

American Barrick Resources Corp. has come farther, faster in the last 11 years than any mining company in recent memory. Acquisition of Lac Minerals Ltd. in August 1994 now makes Barrick the largest gold producer in the world outside South Africa. In terms of market capitalization, the company is the world's most valued gold producer. American Barrick's 28.3-km2 (7000acre) Goldstrike property on Nevada's Carlin Trend, the primary engine for past growth, was purchased in 1987 for $62 million. Regarded as an attractive exploration target, Goldstrike instead propelled American Barrick to the front rank of world gold producers. In 1993, the company produced 50.75 t (1,631,988 oz), 44.78 t (1,439,929 oz) from Goldstrike. Reserves on the property totaled 905 t (29.1 million oz) at the end of 1993, the largest in North America.

Several laboratory methods are available to determine the thermal conductivity of rocks, but most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus, which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed to determine the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and is used to calculate thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivities of different sandstone specimens have values between 2.37 and 2.59 Wm−1°C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, were determined and highlighted in this study.

Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. The Fortitude gold-silver deposit is related to a "wallrock" copper porphyry system developed within Middle Pennsylvanian to Permian Antler Sequence rocks adjacent to a Middle-Tertiary altered granodiorite intrusive stock at Copper Canyon. Gold-silver ores of the Fortitude deposit occur with disseminated and massive sulfide replacement mineralization of skarn-like or calc-silicated limy horizons of the Antler Sequence contact meta-sedimentary rocks. A major, north-trending, steeply westward dipping normal fault was important as a conduit for hydrothermal fluids responsible for the metallization in the Fortitude area. Gold-silver mineralization is best developed near a marble front where retro-grade chloritization and destruction of prograde calc-silicate mineral phases is most prevalent. Fluid-inclusion studies performed on the Copper Canyon system indicate a wide variation in fluid chemistry during several hydrosilicate stages that ranged in temperature from 500°C to 220°C.

"A computer-based approach to online supervisory control and operations management of bulk materials handling terminals". This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. A discussion of the resulting benefits are presented: - throughput efficiency - long-term planning and scheduling, using simulation - operations monitoring and protection - demurrage/despatch optimization - preventative maintenance - operational productivity

Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effectively inert a coal dust explosion, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to air. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anticaking additives after being exposed tomoisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed tomoisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anti-caking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for 1 day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for 6 months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anticaking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber.

The research is located within Asuncion and Cospan districts, which according to their geological features in contrast with previous studies pointing out Au, Mo and Pb anomalies create an environment of prospective interest. The objective is to use ASTER Satellite Images to identify ore-bearing hydrothermal alteration zones. To do this, processing techniques such as the combination of bands by RGB 943 and 461, band ratio 4/6, 4/5, 5/8 and 2/1 to identify advanced argillic, argillic to phyllic and propylitic alterations. In addition, indices defined by Ninomiya were used as a third technique in order to reinforce the data obtained from the previous techniques. The results in the study area are confirmed by the SAM spectral mapping technique using spectral signatures from the USGS library. Identifying kaolinite, alunite and pyrophyllite, assemblages of the advanced argillic alteration. Concluding in 3 areas of interest with the band ratios, 5 areas with the Ninomiya indexes and 9 areas validated with SAM, which were contrasted in 13 areas of prospective interest with well-marked argillic alteration.

Bacterial oxidation of a pyrite/ arsenopyritic gold-ore concentrate was carried out with continuous flow operation in 14 liter (1.4x10-2 m3) mechanically agitated reactors. 02 and C02 uptakes were determined at varying residence times. Bacterial concentrations were measured using a protein assay. A sharp optimum in biooxidation rates was observed with increasing steady-state residence times. Growth of the bacteria and biooxidation of the mineral were both shown to be strongly dependent on dissolved 02 levels in the liquor.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

Implementation of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 is negatively affecting production of coal used for generating electric power in Indiana and elsewhere in the Midwest. Required reduction of sulfur compounds from gas streams, or flue gas desulfurization (FGD), as mandated by these laws has encouraged installation of wet limestone scrubbers at many generating plants. Increasingly stringent requirements that will begin in 2000 are expected to necessitate even more extensive use of such scrubbers. Indiana has large deposits of limestone-the major consumable alkaline raw material for scrubbers-that can meet an expected demand of several million tons per year. Limestones are not, however, all the same. Different limestone units behave quite differently when used as scrubbing agents under differing conditions in actual practice. Decisions about FGD scrubber details would be more meaningful if made with thorough knowledge of which rock units contain the most efficient FGD limestones and which sites of suitable stone are located nearest to power plants. Even though abundant carbonate rocks occur in Indiana, their suitability in scrubbing systems has received little attention, and few attempts have been made to match details of stone resources to the needs of various utility scrubbing systems. Optimization of the fit between geologic characteristics of the existing limestones and prospective scrubber systems should allow for greatly improved planning and operation of FGD systems with attendant lower overall costs. Electric utilities have developed computer models to predict FGD system operations (i.e., the FGD-PRISM model of the Electric Power Research Institute). These models require geologic data such as reactivity that are commonly unavailable. We generated data needed for the model during a cooperative effort among the Indiana Department of Commerce, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), The Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IP&L), and the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association. Our goal was to provide missing geologic details of Indiana scrubber-stone raw materials and apply them to the FGD-PRISM model to provide general guidance to determine which geologic units can provide stone for most efficient sulfur removal. Results of the model for selected limestones and parameters specific to one IP&L generating plant were calculated. Geologic data generated may be applied to other generating operations, and our examples should help other utilities optimize their FGD strategies. Several hundred samples from more than 30 active quarries were collected and their physical properties determined. Grindability values ranged from 7.2 to 21.7 for 50 selected samples. Acid-insoluble residues of less than 1% to 13% were found. Dissolution rates as an index of reactivity varied over two orders of magnitude for the selected set of samples. These data plus chemical analyses and Ca/Mg ratios were entered into a generic scrubber model to determine rates of stone use and scrubber efficiency for various stone. Removal of SO2 was projected by this model to range from 89% to 98% with stone utilization rates from 91% to 93%. Excellent scrubber stone sources were found in Mississippian rocks in central and southern Indiana. Rocks of the Ste. Genevieve and Salem Limestones were especially efficient. Even small amounts of dolomite, clay minerals, and quartz diminished a stone's usefulness for FGD scrubbing.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

The property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3,600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10" C to 22° C throughout the year. Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960's when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group.

Hanumantha Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30,No. 4, pp. 212-219)The formation of hydrogen peroxide from water during the grinding of chalcopyrite in a nitrogen-sparged environment, as reported by Javadi Nooshabadi and Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30, No. 4, pp. 212-219), is questioned on the grounds that oxidation of water by the mineral is unlikely to be thermodynamically feasible. It is argued that it is more likely that any peroxide that had been formed would have been generated from residual oxygen in the nitrogen-flushed system than from the oxidation of water.The formation of hydrogen peroxide by finely divided pyrite had been reported by a number of authors (Borda et al., 2001; Borda et al., 2003; Cohn et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2010; Jones et al., 2011; Javadi Nooshabadi et al., 2013). That hydrogen peroxide is formed in the presence of oxygen in solution can be comprehended from wellestablished mechanisms. Pyrite in aerated solution is known to oxidize by an anodic process that is coupled with the cathodic reduction of oxygen (Holmes and Crundwell, 2000). The latter process has been shown to occur through the formation of hydrogen peroxide (Biegler et al., 1975; Ahlberg and Broo, 1996). The pH dependence of cathodic oxygen reduction at other sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite (Biegler et al., 1977; Rand, 1977), implies a similar mechanism at these surfaces."

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron and carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and engine oil) and four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5 and 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperatures. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

Currently, its separation and extraction from Te-bearing materials face problems such as long flowsheets and high reagent consumption, giving rise to an urgent need to develop new methods for its recovery.

A single bubble released into surfactant solution first accelerates, reaching a maximum velocity then decelerates to reach a terminal velocity. Modeling this "velocity profile" is fundamental to understanding the motion of bubbles in flotation systems. This contribution considers the terminal velocity. Modeling is by a combination of the Navier-Stokes equation for flow around the bubble and the Marangoni effect induced by surfactant on the bubble surface. Numerical simulation is shown to agree with experiment for bubbles in pure water and surfactant solutions.
