Four samples of galena, each prepared differently, dry ground chalcopvrite and real gar have shown various quantities of liberated sulfur corresponding up to nine equivalent monolavers on their surfaces as determined by the solvent extraction/UV analysis of sulfur using ethanol. The pretreatment of a dry ground galena sample with acidified ammonium chloride or neutral, saturated sodium chloride solutions rendered the mineral readily floatable. The collectorless floatabilities of galena pretreated with the former solution and of drv ground chalcopvrite have been evaluated in reference to the natural floatability of sulfur using the critical surface tension of floatability approach with aqueous methanol solutions. It is shown that the amount of sulfur- on these samples can be correlated with their flotation rate, which was found to he first order within the critical surface tension range. The larger the concentration of surface sulfur, the faster the sulfide mineral floats, thus, the greater its flotation rate constant.

All copper ore haulage at Isamine was transferred to the new 19 level haulage network by mid 1975. Previous experience together with design studies had indicated that a three train operation would be required to haul the scheduled ore production. The ore train with a gross weight of 600 tonne is made up of 15 bottom dumping trucks hauled by twin electric locomotives (Figure 1). Present train speeds reach 40 km/hr and, in the future, this speed could be increased to 55 km/hr. The planned operation on the restricted track network and the relatively high train speed meant that the train driver operated block light system would be inadequate on the grounds of haulage safety and meeting production targets. Some form of Centralised Train Control (CTC) system emerged as a necessity, and as an initial step, tenders were called for a relay control type CTC system. The high cost of these systems and the anticipated high maintenance costs and inflexibility of the offered systems led to the rejection of the tenders. It was decided to develop a CTC system locally and to use a digital computer to perform the basic track [ ] equipment interlocking tasks and monitor haulage operation.

Respirable (PM-10) crystalline silica is regulated by the State of California as a carcinogen. The risk-management of this material by the State exemplifies the inherent problems in the development of regulations based on current risk-assessment practices. The influence of extremely conservative risk-assessment and risk-management can be expressed in economic impacts including the increased cost of production, reduced competition, increased prices, reduced employment and redistribution of income. This paper attempts to contrast theoretical risk- assessment and risk-management with current application using crystalline silica as an example. Based on health information pertaining to silica, the paper examines federal and State of California regulatory and public policy positions. Using current risk factors and empirical data for the Central Valley of California, the projected incidence of lung cancer in humans is examined. While such an analysis would project an extremely high incidence of lung cancer as well as silicosis, not a single case of either lung impairment has been recorded within the study area or throughout the world in the general population. This suggests that sound guidelines for the analysis of scientific information have given way to the assumption that virtually any information representing a substance as a carcinogen is to be considered valid with little or no qualification.

The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

Blasting is used in mining and civil excavations to break the rockmass for ore production or creation of space. One of the disadvantages of the method is that it causes breakage beyond the proposed excavation lines. Pre-split is used to control such breakage in rockmass. This paper introduces the use of digital image analysis technique (DIAT) to measure rock breakage and half cast factor (HCF%). A new factor, undamaged area (AUD%), is introduced to improve the prediction, owing to the shortcomings of the HCF%. A comparison of significant data of AUD% and HCF% showed that HCF% has a lacuna of overpredicting, whereas AUD% can be used effectively to address the issue. Artificial neural networks are used to solve the complexity of multiple variables involved in predictions and to ascertain the importance and sensitivity of such variables in prediction regimes. This method will help users to evolve blast-induced damage objectively. A comprehensive scheme of things for future developments is included, which can be helpful to researchers in defining their research in this area.

An accurate knowledge of the interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species is important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation, interactions relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption (the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation) within Florida phosphatic clay Waste were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slimes were due to unselective polyacrylic acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Al and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. A further increase in the separation of natural slimes is most likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

INTRODUCTION The Astoria property is located in the prolifically mineralized Abitibi greenstone belt and is one of the most advanced projects presently under development by Yorbeau Resources Inc. This property, which hosts the Astoria gold deposit, is located in the southern part of Rouyn township, Abitibi area, Quebec, 4 km south of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Figure 1). The Astoria deposit has been the subject of underground development for over a half century, beginning with Granada Rouyn Mining Co. in the 1930's and followed by Astoria Rouyn Mines Ltd. in the 1940's. Yorbeau Resources Inc. acquired the property in 1984 and has, since then, conducted numerous exploration programs on this gold deposit. The diluted reserves of the Astoria deposit are estimated at 1,3 million metric tons grading 6,14 grams of gold per metric ton (1.4 million st at 0.18 oz/st). This reserve figure is based on the results of surface and underground exploration carried out from January 1986 to June 1987 and includes ore in the proven, probable and possible categories. This paper is divided into two sections. The first part includes a summary of the geological environment including a description of the gold bearing zones and a short discussion on wall rock alteration. The second part of this paper reviews the underground work and the objective of the ongoing exploration program.

At the outset, I believe reference should be made to comparatively recent world developments in copper which have an important bearing upon the Canadian position. COPPER SITUATION No one can doubt the marked change for the better compared with not so long ago when less than adequate attention was paid to marketing and to uses of the metal. I need not show you graphs of world copper prices, which except for relatively brief periods and war conditions were, until about three years ago, not unlike the topography of the Canadian Rockies. There remain, of course, some non-industry factors who yearn for the old days of "roller-coaster" copper prices.

On June 25, 1876 Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the Seventh U.S. Cavalry Regiment., comprising 31 officers and 637 enlisted men, into the valley of the Little Big Horn River in southern Montana. His assigned mission was a reconnaissance-in- force to locate the Indians reported to be assemblying in that area. Custer was extremely successful in locating the Indians. Unfortunately he located more than 3000 Cheyenne and Sioux under the leadership of the great war chiefs Crazy Horse and Gall. Custer's entire battalion of more than 200 men was annihilated; there were no survivors. While I don't seriously suggest that things will be all that bad in the uranium industry, I do suggest that some very fundamental changes have occurred in the uranium market. Conventional thinking based on past truths will no longer suffice. Geology, economics, politics, nuclear growth pat terns, technology, and utility attitudes have all changed. New thinking is in order. It is at this point that I would offer my usual disclaimer. My views regarding the future are simply that--my personal views. My belief that certain events will come to pass does not mean I view those events as appropriate, wise, good, equitable, or economic.

At Kerr-McGee's Galatia Mine in southern Illinois, the need for safe and efficient longwall moves prompted a detailed planning effort. Galatia Mine operates two longwalls on separate coal seams with different geologic conditions. An overview of the longwall move planning as related to manpower training, roof control, ventilation, transportation, equipment recovery and setup will be discussed. The impressive safety record achieved during each of the longwall moves at Galatia Mine verifies that health and safety planning does play a major role.

Longwall mining operations continue to increase extraction rates and the potential to generate higher amounts of airborne respirable dust (ARD). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gathered data from underground longwall surveys and laboratory crushing tests to identify the important factors influencing the amount of ARD levels generated. Coal-seam characteristics, operational parameters (i.e.,cut sequence, mining height, etc.), extraction rates and dust-control parameters (i.e., airflow, water flow, etc.) were examined to determine their influence on ARD levels measured at longwalls during actual mining operations. ARD generated by a laboratory crusher while crushing bituminous coal samples collected from underground longwalls was also examined to determine if there were cor relations with coal-seam properties. Results from the longwall and laboratory data collected indicated that low-ash, high-volatile coals (low moist fuel ratio or MFR coals) generate higher amounts of ARD. It was found that face ventilation and water application to the coal product are essential elements to controlling longwall ARD levels.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

The large scale transportation and storage of sulphur in the liquid state is a relatively new development, but is really only a logical extension of old mining and processing techniques, It is not known who the first person was to win a relatively pure sulphur from ore by melting, but this method was commercially used at least two hundred years ago in Sicily and is still in use today. The Frasch process of mining was invented over sixty years ago, and the development and improvement of-liquid sulphur pumping and handling techniques has paralleled the growth in the Frasch mining industry. During the last fifty years, improvements in the technology of using sulphur have included the premelting of sulphur prior to its being burned for acid production or conversion into CS2 and other compounds. Yet, until fairly recent times, sulphur produced as liquid has been solidified into large blocks at the producing point, broken down by blasting or with mechanical equipment, and shipped in bulk form as a solid.

The control of Florida phosphate flotation plants is largely based on the visual observations of experienced operators, both in recognizing good and bad froth conditions and in making judgments about the composition of feed, concentrate and tailing streams. Chemical analyses lag the process by at least two hours and therefore only assist in recalibrating the operators' vision when major deviations occur. An image analysis system has been developed by IMC Agrico Company (IMCA) to improve upon the accuracy and precision of the composition estimation process. It still relies upon the operator taking a representative sample, but provides a measurement in about 15 minutes after that sample is obtained. This paper describes the system and its use and presents comparative results for various process streams.

The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.

A new coarse cleaning device, the Stripa, has been developed for processing of coal in the size range of -100+10 mm. The Stripa is an auotogenous heavy medium separator originally developed for processing of iron ores. Although it has been employed in concentrating ores such as chromite, it has not been applied in coal cleaning. In this study, a pilot plant scale modified Stripa and its counterpart alternative, a diaphragm jig, are compared using subbituminous and lignitic coals. The separation performance of the Stripa and the diaphragm jig has been established in the light of washability properties of the coal samples. Comparison of the performance of the Stripa with that of the jig indicates that the Stripa can be used in coal preparation circuits as an alternative to jigs in the size range of -100+10 mm. Simplicity, low initial investment, and low operating and maintenance costs make the Stripa a plausible candidate for coarse coal cleaning. More importantly, Stripa due to its short residence time, has a superior capacity over jig.

The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. A PC-based simulation model using the software packages SIMAN and CINEMA was developed to simulate and animate truck-shovel operations. The model is capable of simulating one mathematical dispatching strategy using linear and dynamic programming and six heuristic dispatching strategies. Data were collected from an actual operating mine through time studies and analysis of historical records. Statistical analyses were performed, and appropriate theoretical distributions were fitted for various time events in the truck-shovel cycle. The model was then applied to study overall impact of these dispatching strategies on constrained and unconstrained mine productivity. The simulation/animation model developed in this study seems to be an efficient planning tool for choosing optimal fleets and finding an optimal dispatching strategy to produce an equilibrium between the quality and quantity of production.
