INTRODUCTION The process engineer usually is responsible for the design operating philosophy and/or day-to-day operations of a process. Since instrumentation is an integral part of the operation, it is essential that engineers understand the general capabilities of the different types of control equipment available. Many "noncontrol" engineers have become involved with instrumentation for machinery monitoring and control as well as other plant applications. The advent of the microprocessor has led to significant changes in control, both in systems configurations and man-machine interfaces. Today's concept is called simply "distributed control." What is distributed control? Distributed control is exactly what the name implies; the control system is divided into several functional segments and spread out to cover a process. The systems are distributed for physical, functional, and risk reasons. Before delving further into the specifics of distributed control, let's look at the evolution of control systems to see how we got here. Instruments initially were located near measurement and control points in the field. Operators physically had to go to the instrument to change setpoints or take measurements. As processes became more complex, it became evident that a central control area was required. This allowed an operator to monitor and control many variables. The operator's effectiveness was increased dramatically, which resulted in greater efficiency, better quality control, and lower personnel requirements. At the same time, plants became much larger, control applications became more complex, energy became expensive, and the industry became more competitive. All of these factors placed pressure on process and production engineers to get the most for the money. The result was a continuing push to put more instrumentation into a central control room to maximize efficiency and productivity and minimize manpower. This chapter deals in some detail with devices for measuring physical and chemical properties of coal; devices for measuring the weight and weight-rate of flow of coal; devices for the monitoring and control of conveyor systems, solids inventory, fluid flow, liquid level, density, and specific gravity. These instruments have a multitude of uses throughout a coal preparation plant. Stability of fine quartz suspensions in process water is of concern in several mineral processing applications. In alkaline solutions, the presence of magnesium ions, arising from such sources as water hardness and magnesium-bearing minerals, leads to the precipitation of Mg(OH)2 which coats the surfaces of quartz. The conditions under which heterocoagulation or surface precipitation of Mg(OH)2 on quartz occur and the manner in which they influence the settling behavior of ground quartz was studied by means of settling tests, coating density determinations, zeta potential measurements and electron microscope observations. Coating density was greater when Mg(OH)2 nucleated on the surface of quartz than when the precipitates heterocoagulated on the quartz surface. The settling curves of quartz suspensions in the presence of different concentrations of MgCl2 exhibited a maximum of maxima which occurred at 10-3M MgC12 and pH 11. Interactions between quartz and Mg(OH)2, and flocculation-dispersion characteristics of quartz suspensions in this system are discussed.

The geological and geostatistical modeling of mineral deposits requires densely sampled drillholes that provide accurate and reliable hard data. Furthermore, quantifying orebody uncertainty through geostatistical simulation can allow mining engineers to assess long-term risk in mine planning. Nevertheless, ore deposits can sometimes lack dense drillhole information, reliable hard data with proper quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), or sometimes both. This study is based on a coal mine located in the Republic of Kazakhstan, where an iron dataset is based on data from three newly drilled drillholes, and geological information comes from a massive collection of legacy drillhole data with no evidence of proper QA/QC. For this reason, a workflow was introduced to construct a representative training image from legacy data and stochastically model geological domains within these three drillholes using a multiple-point geostatistics technique. Once the geological model was obtained, a two-point geostatistics algorithm was applied to model the iron inside each geological domain. The direct sampling algorithm was chosen for modeling geological domains, and sequential Gaussian simulation for iron grade calculation. Both methods were extensively evaluated using different statistical tools and analyses.

In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

"With regard to the EU funded project ‘Real-Time Mining’ a sensor-based acquisition, collection and transmission of data for the resource extraction process will be developed. The key concept promotes the change in paradigm from a discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring. Especially concerning material characterization, machine performance and underground positioning ‘Real-Time Mining’ will provide sensor solutions as well as the interfaces for integration, management and visualization of the collected data for a permanent updating process of the resource model with the aim of near real-time optimization of decisions. On the basis of ‘Real-Time Mining’-Output a permanent monitoring of costs can be performed as well in both, the installation and the production process of a mine. Due to the collected data in terms of machine performance connected with the underground positioning information added with personnel tracking and mine surveys a comprehensive overview of process performance is available. By evaluating those information in a specific manner costs per unit will arise for monitoring and possibly controlling actions. INTRODUCTION By having a look into the future of mineral extraction projects, a new challenge for the Ore Mining Industry will arise in the short and medium term. Due to the depletion of currently mined mineral reserves in addition to the persistently high demand of mineral raw materials, the extraction of complex reserves will be necessary. By characterizing such deposits as not constantly graded and geometrically varying, the extraction process, especially concerning the requirement of a minimized zero-value material handling, will become economically ineffective by utilizing the traditional mineral resource management methods. Regarding the state-of-the-art mineral resource management process along the mining value chain, an intermitted, discontinuous sequence of actions is applied (Figure 1). Recently data will be collected from drill hole cores. These rock samples are analyzed in a laboratory. Based on those analyses a resource model is created whereby unknown data between drill holes is interpolated. This resource model is the basis for all mine planning actions including the selection of the mining method, extraction sequencing and the prediction of the expected performance. With the start of the production, real conditions (concentrations of elements, hardness, stability, etc.) can be observed and measured. As the production process is running accordingly to the above described mine plan, the verification of the initial assumptions happens at the earliest after processing of the extracted material. Even if deviations between the predicted and the actual performance are now recognized, the execution of corrective actions is not possible anymore."

This section on case histories of discoveries of volcanic-associated and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits is divided into a preliminary discussion of models and then into three parts: Kuroko- type, Anyox-type, and shale-hosted. The separation is made to accommodate the use of exploration models, and these may not coincide with genetic models discussed in the literature. The exploration models grew as knowledge was gained concerning ore guides and ore controls in the volcanic-related deposits. The evolution of the genesis of massive sulfide deposits in volcanic terranes from a replacement to a syngenetic hypothesis in the 1950s and 1960s necessitated changes in exploration approaches in ore search. The acceptance of a syngenetic origin for conformable or concordant sulfide masses led to more widespread adoption of stratigraphic ore guides. 'The occurrence of epigenetic stringer ore with and stratigraphically below many conformable massive sulfide deposits did not diminish the importance of stratigraphic ore controls. Proximal conformable sulfide masses were formed near their seafloor hot spring source and normally are underlain by epigenetic sulfides: whereas. distal conformable sulfide masses were deposited away from the hot spring and may have no associated feede; zone. Industry groups that early recognized the syngenetic nature of volcanogenic massive sulfides were responsible for discovery of some of the large and economically significant deposits. Ultimately, the rest of the geological profession accepted the leadership of the early iconoclasts.

The Pegasus Gold/Montana Tunnels Mine is a high­tonnage, low-grade, base and precious metal operation in Jefferson City, Montana. Gold heads are typically 0.02 opt with the dominant gold mineral being a native metal electrum quite rich in silver. Early research and development indicated the ore to be amenable to gravity concentration at a 10 to 14 mesh grind. Although full flow gravity preconcentration was considered as a flowsheet alternative, flotation was chosen as the main recovery process due to its apparent lower cost for capital and operating. At this early juncture, the option or concept of recovering coarse free gold by gravity was deemed unnecessary or irrelevant. The intermittent loss of free gold has been observed in the flotation tailing since mill start up. A comprehensive research program was initiated in 1990 to identify the magnitude of this loss and investigate alternatives for its recovery. Batch and pilot plant testing has ultimately led to a permanent gravity circuit being installed at the cyclone underflow. The circuit is designed to scalp out the liberated coarse gold contained in the ball mill circulating load. The final flowsheet consists of: a pinched sluice to upgrade cyclone underflow; a Tyler doubledeck screen to remove over­size from sluice concentrate; Knelson concentrators for roughing and cleaning of screen undersize; an Eriez wet drum separator to remove tramp metal from Knelson concentrate; a Sweco screen to size Knelson cleaner concentrate for tabling; and a Wilfley table to produce final concentrate for direct melting.

With the world’s ever-growing push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source of rare earths found in the United States is bastnaesite, a rare-earth-bearing fluorocarbonate, mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it has been essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to capture current reserves. This paper presents the results of a research program conducted to expand the understanding of the bastnaesite leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge and thermodynamic calculations, a novel single-stage hydrochloric acid leach system was created to optimize the extraction of rare earths from bastnaesite. Historically, this extraction has entailed the use of a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach followed by a caustic crack. We ran a series of single-stage leach experiments by reacting locked-cycle flotation concentrate with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these single-stage tests showed significantly higher rare-earth recoveries than the reported recoveries of the historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the number and amount of reagents needed.

Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

The penetration of sustainability principles in business practices has introduced the necessity for a simultaneous integrated assessment of the corporate economic, environmental and social performances. Continuous technological, political and legal evolutions indicate that Sustainable Development (SD) principles will soon have to be implemented in all sectors of the Greek corporate reality, among them in the Mineral and Mining Industry. However, the ultimate criteria for the evaluation of a company?s performance remain its profitability and its market value. Managers, shareholders, financial intermediaries, all alike, emphasize and base their decisions on the various accounting produced ratios of return (ROA, ROE, ROCE, Residual Value) included, or produced by data found, in the financial statements of the companies. This paper offers evidence that the traditional accounting ratios discourage the implementation of investment plans that aim at improving the environmental performance of companies and therefore can be inadequate and misguiding for SD applications. International studies have consistently traced a positive relationship between the environmental performances of firms and their financial positions. Yet, the fact that investors tend to reward proactive companies by increasing their corporate values is disregarded by the return ratios, which usually set up the basis for management rewards and bonuses. The book value of the firm assets and owners? equity from which such ratios are produced diverges strongly from the real corporate value, defined as the traded amount for the stock of a firm. There is an urgent need for an adjustment of the return ratios so that they can record the positive economic impact of a more sustainable attitude and encourage decision makers towards this direction.

The net balance of the inflow and outflow of water in a tailings storage facility has major economic implications in any large mining and milling operation. In a net precipitation environment it can control the ultimate size and storage capacity of a facility or dictate the need for an expensive treatment and discharge program. In a net evaporation environment it can control the extent of the water rights acquisitions required for makeup water and dictate the number and size of expensive wells and pumping and delivery systems. The elements considered in a water balance analysis include the anticipated production rate, the water content of the slurry used to deliver the tailings, inflow from precipitation and snowmelt, and losses from evaporation and seepage. The mine can exert significant control over only one of these elements: the production rate. All others are subject to considerable uncertainty from month to month and year to year. The traditional approach is to analyze in a spreadsheet environment by making simplifying assumptions and using monthly mean or "average" values for precipitation inflows and evaporation losses. Often the analysis will be repeated with values subjectively assigned to represent a "wet" year or "dry'' year. The probabilistic approach uses the same basic spreadsheet model in conjunction with a probabilistic simulation add-in program allowing probability distributions to be substituted for any of the deterministic variables. The resulting analysis shows the full range of variation possible for each parameter of interest (i.e., available return water, makeup water required, storage, seepage losses) and estimates the exceedance probabilities for each. The potential uses and advantages of the probabilistic approach are discussed.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

When tunnel boring machines were first developed, the J. F. Shea Company elected not to use them until some of the bugs were worked out. When we did take the plunge, we learned a great many lessons in tunneling; amongst others, that tunneling with a TBM is more an art than a science. One of the most important factors that contributes to a successful TBM tunnel is the geology. A machine can be designed to handle almost any type of ground; however, if the ground is not uniform, compromises in design must be made to enable the machine to handle the various ground conditions. Even when the geologic formations are well defined, it is still impossible to predict how the formations will react when it is penetrated by a tunnel. This is where the design and performance of a tunnel boring machine runs into trouble. When the reactions are adverse, the contractor is left with three alternatives; park or pull the machine and drive conventional, fight through the formation with no changes, or modify the machine. We have made all three of these choices. The first, on the Tonner Tunnel in Southern California, we encountered an extremely tough sandstone where progress was measured in inches per day. Ultimately, we pulled the machine and drove conventional tunnel. The second, on the Vat Tunnel in Central Utah, another element was added to the geology - water, which we encountered in excess of 1,000 gpm at the heading. It was impossible to adapt the machine to handle this much water, so we have been carrying out a program of grouting ahead of the machine and then driving tunnel with the tunnel boring machine.

This study aims to investigate the optimal method for ore pass construction in incompetent rock masses. We evaluated the conventional and raise boring methods based on safety, efficiency, excavation control and ground support for ore pass construction. A stability analysis using analytical Q-raise (QR method) and kinematic analysis methods for ore pass construction with a raise borer before and after grout injection of the rock mass was performed. As a case study, an ore pass (diameter of 3 m, depth of 100 m) within an incompetent rock mass was considered to gain further insight. The rock mass was characterized according to the classification methods Q Barton, rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR) and geological strength index (GSI). The grout intensity number (GIN) method of grout injection was used. The safety factor of less than 1.075 obtained before injection was lower than the acceptance criteria. However, grout injection before raise borer excavation resulted in a safety factor greater than 1.5. Using a raise borer without pre-grouting indicated that the maximum unsupported diameter (MUSD) of the ore pass was less than the required 3 m and equal to or larger than 3 m post-grouting.

Mining Engineering sat down with Hecla chief executive officer Phil Baker to gain insight on this tremendous longevity and to get his view on how the company demonstrated persistence, gained perspective and created position for its future.How did Hecla Mining Co. get its start?In 1891, a group of investors formed Hecla Mining Co. to acquire and trade mining claims. No one envisioned at the time that the Coeur d’Alene Mining District would become known as the “Silver Valley” and produce more than 37.2 kt (1.2 billion oz) of silver. Or that Hecla would become the United States’ largest primary silver producer and the last of the pioneer mining companies from this illustrious mining district.What is the origin of the name “Hecla?”That will forever be a bit of a mystery. Some say it was named for an Icelandic volcano. Or that it was the foresight of James Toner, who staked the original claim, that it would go so deep, fulfilling the medieval folklore definition of the word ‘Hekla’ which is the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ I kind of like that one as the Lucky Friday Mine is almost 3.2 km (2 miles) below the surface. It has operated for more than 70 years and has all the markings of being one of only a handful of mines that will exceed 100 years of operations.Is there a common theme, or thread throughout the 125 years?Yes, Hecla has always had a solid core of high-quality and long-lived assets, positioning the company to survive times of low prices and reap the rewards when cycles turn and higher prices are realized. But it is not just assets. Hecla has extraordinary expertise that gives us the perspective of how to acquire, explore, develop and operate mining assets, particularly underground. Hecla is one of the few companies to acquire assets in the last five to six years and we did not have to write down the value of them, which means we paid a fair price for the asset despite the metals price reductions that followed the purchase. And our culture has given us the persistence to develop mines and complete projects despite lower prices. For almost a decade we have been advancing the #4 Shaft project at the Lucky Friday. We will complete this project this year, positioning the mine to operate for decades. In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. When a predetermined sample of data from the drilling program and bench-scale or pilot-plant tests are received, a detailed feasibility study may be started.
