Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. High-quality sample selection for metallurgical test work is essential to a geometallurgy study, but the large multidimensional dataset makes sample selection a daunting task, as classifying the dataset while respecting its heterogeneity is difficult. This paper presents a streamlined approach for sample selection, utilizing custom-built tools in Python to standardize the methodology, saving time and costs. This approach uses the cumulative sum method, principal component analysis, and k-means clustering method to elegantly cluster the data and select representative samples. A case study is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology by selecting 40 samples for flotation test work.

INTRODUCTION Solid-liquid separation is an important and many times a critical step (or steps) in a mineral or coal processing plant. Some examples of typical critical separations are as follows: 1. Operating a seven to eight stage CCD thickening circuit to re¬cover almost all of the caustic and alumina trihydrate values in an alumina plant. This must be accomplished with highly scaling slurries, starting temperatures of over 100°C and operate on a closed circuit system. 2. Making a filter step operate to produce a proper moisture for the balling step so that the pellet furnace can produce a proper product. Bentonite addition must be minimized and a good quality filtrate must be maintained to prevent abrasion of the internal parts of the filter. 3. Operating a closed water system in a coal washing plant so that reclaimed water containing less than one percent suspended solids is produced for reuse to maintain beneficiation ef¬ficiency. Refuse solids must also be thickened so that they can be effectively dewatered to meet state disposal requirements. 4. Recovering phosphoric acid values from a slurry containing gypsum and other gangue solids at an elevated temperature. This must be done while minimizing wash water and maximizing P2O5 re¬covery while simultaneously minimizing scale problems. While solid-liquid separations are important to overall performance in the processing plant flowsheet, it is also a significant factor in plant costs. Capital and operating costs for all the solid-liquid separation steps (includ¬ing water reclamation for reuse) in such plants are probably between 10 and 20%. Energy consumption can also be important in these separations. For example, in the copper concentrator, it is the third largest category in energy consumption, after comminution and flotation. Obviously, solid-liquid separation steps in a plant demand proper atten¬tion in design in order to achieve both optimum performance and cost. Simultaneously, knowledge of funda¬mentals are important to improve results in existing plants.

This paper describes Cananea's successful implementation of the world's first mobile high angle conveyor (MHAC™) to achieve multiple-lift stacking of their primary crushed (2,500 mtph) low-grade ore. The mobile high angle conveyor answered Cananea's needs to stack a second lift, 30-meter high, on their Quebalix I pad. The mobile high angle conveyor is a custom unit that was designed by Terra Nova Technologies (TNT) in conjunction with Continental Conveyor and Equipment Company (CCE's 100th HAC). The stacking system expansion project also includes a rail mounted tripper on the existing overland conveyor and a custom designed "corridor conveyor" to build the corridor for the upper mobile HAC tracks and tail of the existing mobile stacking conveyor. Mexicana de Cananea, part of Grupo Mexico, is a large copper producer in Sonora Mexico and has been in operation continuously for over 100 years.

Ground-based electrical geophysical techniques have be valuable for three indirect exploration strategies: "tracer" sulfide mineralization, 2) mapping structure with or controlling mineralization, and 3) mapping proven to 1) mapping? associated alteration zones. When sulfide mineralization is associated with gold, it often can be mapped using induced polarization (IP). This technique can detect pyrite in amounts as small as 0.2% by volume, and in some cases can distinguish pyrite from anomalies due to graphite and clays. A case history illustrates mapping sulfides in a shear zone. Structure and alteration mapping are often the domain of controlled source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) due to the superior lateral resolution and depth penetration of this technique. Typical CSAMT targets include silicified sediments and volcanics, faults, brecciated zones, argillic alteration, clay and graphite horizons, and certain lithologies. Examples of mapping silicification and mapping epithermal alteration are presented in CSAMT case histories over Cannon mine in Washington and Hishikari mine in southern Japan. In our experience, four things are needed to use geophysics effectively in precious metals exploration. First, the explorationist must correctly identify the exploration stage at which the geophysics is most useful. Second, the explorationist must clearly define the types of "tracer" mineralization, host geology, or alteration which need to be defined by the geophysics. Third, the right electrical technique needs to be applied to the problem to provide the best chance of success. Fourth, the explorationist must be willing to commit adequate finances to do the geophysics properly. With careful adherence to these principles, geophysics can greatly enhance exploration success while reducing the total cost of exploration.

Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) or Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium exchanged Alabama clays, were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Na-modified clays, prepared according to the TVA soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, Na/Mg-or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

The Maybell Mill of, Trace Elements Corporation, Unit of Union Carbide Corporation is located approximately five miles northeast of Maybell, Colorado, and twenty-five miles northwest of Craig. It is located in the midst of the uranium ore deposits whose presence, made it possible. In November 1953 Russel Cutter, Chief Geologist for the original Trace Elements Corporation, picked up high readings on a scintillometer while flying over this area. Later, with George Morehouse, Chief Engineer for the original. Trace Elements Corporation, he started a search for surface indications. In this search, they found an out crop which can be regarded as the discovery lode on this property. The actual locating of claims and acquiring free lands and state lands was begun in March 1954. During 1955 enough drilling was done to indicate that a sufficient tonnage of ore existed to make possible a mill. These ore deposits are located in the Browns Park formation which is an unconsolidated sandstone with a few hard lime ribs running through it. The geologists tell us that this region was once a vast basin which became filled with wind blown sand and volcanic tuff, Later on, ground waters brought uranium into the basin which precipitated out in the sand. During the late summer and fall of 1955, a small pilot plant was operated under the supervision of John L. Chapman testing these Browns Park ores. During the operation of the pilot plant, three small open pits were developed and the ore from these pits shipped to Union Carbide Nuclear Company, Division of Union Carbide Corporation, at Rifle. To date all ore is being mined from open ptis. In the fall of 1956 the original Trace Elements group signed a contract with: the AEC for a mill at Maybell and on November 5, 1956, Union Carbide acquired the Trace Elements Corporation properties and contract. During the next two months, intensive research was carried out on the Browns Park ores by our research lab at Rifle. They also checked some of the metallurgical results which had been obtained through the operation of the pilot plant by the original Trace Elements group. During this period, a report on Trace Elements Corporation ores was also prepared by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation. This report contained data on representative samples of the ore tested for the original Trace Elements group. From this research and study a flow sheet was decided upon.

Until recently, the volumes delivered and unloaded from heap-leaching pads have been estimated by manual methods at Wharf Resources' South Dakota operation. In August 1989, the Engineering Department acquired the MINE-SURVEY software developed by GEM COM Services, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada, as part of a mine planning/grade control software package. The implementation of MINE-SURVEY for pad control resulted in a cost-effective tool to provide accurate and prompt estimates of ore delivered or unloaded from the pads. Volumes can be calculated in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours or days. Another benefit is the ease of comparison of as-build and designed volumes, plotting cross-section in any orientation, importing into AUTOCAD, validation of ore densities and truck factors. This paper describes the application of the MINE-SURVEY systems in heap leaching pad volumetrics.

Spontaneous combustion in western U.S. coal mines has been recognized as a serious problem which requires unique solutions. Methods have been developed for longwall mining which rely on the existence of an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in the gob for control of the spontaneous combustion hazard rather than the use of bleeder systems. Monitoring of the gob atmosphere is required to protect against the possibility of an explosion and to detect spontaneous heatings. Data from an example mine employing such a system is included to illustrate normal gob gas trends and is compared to abnormal trends which resulted from and were indicative of a fire. Under normal circumstances the oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations decline rapidly as the longwall face retreats. Samples taken from a leaking seal in the example mine prior to a spontaneous heating showed virtually no oxygen depletion, contained erratic CO concentrations, and indicated the existence of hydrogen, a fire indicator. The appearance of an abnormal trend in the gob atmosphere can be used as an early warning of spontaneous heatings.

REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand and gravel mine sites throughout the United States. These interviews verified that the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework agree with perceptions of the interviewed H&S professionals, who also provided validity for the critical role these competencies play. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

Engineering rock mass classifications have received prominent attention as design aids in rock tunneling. Support selection in civil engineering tunnels and chambers is often based on such classifications. In the field of mining, rock mass classifications have not been utilized to the same extent but some applications have been made. This paper considers the current rock mass classification schemes from the point of view of their potential in mining. Case histories are described featuring their use in assessing the cavability of ore as well as entry stability and support. Current possibilities for rock mass classifications as design aids in mining are outlined.

This is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the European Environment Agency that aim to raise awareness of the use of economic instruments and assess their effectiveness. The emphasis is on sharing good practice and increasing knowledge and understanding across European countries in this emerging policy area. A methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic instruments has been developed and this will examine whether the inclusion of economic instruments in complex policy packages can improve the overall performance, particularly as a prevention tool in terms of resource use and waste generation The focus for this initial study is the use of aggregate taxes in four EU countries which include the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden and the UK so that a range of experiences (e.g. geographical, political etc.) can be included. The findings will be used to inform and influence future policy development in other EEA countries. The methodological approach is divided into two main sections: - Technical analysis, which covers quantitative and qualitative analysis. - Process design, i.e. who should be involved when, where and how. Process design is essential if the full learning benefits are to be gained from the technical analysis, which is the ultimate objective of these evaluations.

Mixing of solid-liquid slurries is a unit operation that is widely encountered in the minerals processing industry. Applications may range from simple slurry storage in open tanks to complex chemical reaction systems under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. The specific process requirements dictate both the degree of mixing required and the type of agitation employed to achieve the desired results.' Many continuous-flow process applications feature tanks operating in series to provide a discrete number of stages and a known residence time for the slurry. Because these tanks operate at a constant level in an overflow mode, the mixer must maintain uniform solids concentration and size distribution throughout the tank; failure to achieve uniformity results in accumulation of coarse solids in the tank, ultimately leading to a process or mechanical failure. Downward-pumping, axial-flow mixing impellers are widely employed to produce uniform solids suspension. The specific impeller type, number, size, and power draw is a function of each given situation. The use of high-efficiency, fluid-foil impellers (Figure I) has evolved as a recognized standard for these flow­controlled applications. Recent small-scale experimentation and full-scale experience has demonstrated that, when uniformity is required, capital and operating expense can be minimized by employing an additional upper impeller pumping in the upward direction.

Over the past couple of decades several endeavours have been made to develop lixiviants with the intention of replacing cyanide in gold leaching. In 1980s these endeavours were largely economically driven, due to cyanide shortages at that time. In more recent times, the driving force has shifted to occupational health and environmental considerations. It is often argued that the high acute toxicity of cyanide alone makes it worthwhile considering to replace it completely by less toxic alternative lixiviants. This has led to having to consider more criteria in the choice of any alternative lixiviants, which have often not been taken into account in the past. The intention of this paper is to review these alternative lixiviants and also review the criteria, which have ultimately led to most of these lixiviants never having found any large scale application, if they passed laboratory stage at all. It is also intended to show, that by handling and treating cyanide in a proper manner, the overall profile for the use of cyanide compared to these alternative lixiviants is very favourable. The question to really be answered is whether there is actually any chemical or process applicable to gold leaching that does not show the high toxicity potential of cyanide and that is still favourable with regard to looking at a broader spectrum of criteria and not only acute toxicity.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents.
