This study was carried out in Ichadih to map the sulfide/gold mineralization using combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) methods. No geophysical analysis has been carried out to delineate such ore deposits in the area. Thus, the study provides a different approach for approximate location and extension of the quartz reef associated with sulfide/gold mineralization. It also provides the elementary idea for further detailed subsurface investigation in terms of geological and geophysical approach.

In August, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was signed into law [I]. It stated that: "The Congress finds and declares that because of the diversity in terrain ... and other physical conditions in areas subject to min ing operations, the primary governmental res- ponsibility for developing, authorizing, issuing, and enforcing regulations for-surface mining and reclamation operations subject to the Act should rest with the States." Section 516 of Title V (Control of the Environ mental Impacts of Surface Coal Mining) of the Act deals with the surface effects of underground coal mining operations. "Each permit issued under any approved State or Federal program pursuant to this Act and relating to underground coal mining shall re quire tfieoperator to adopt izeasures consist ent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence, causing material damage, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and main tain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances vhere the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner: Provided, that nothing in this subsection shall be construed to prohibit the standard method of room and pillar mining. "

Coca Mines Inc. is a medium sized company exploring for and developing precious metal properties in the Western United States. They own interests in a number of properties which contain reserves of gold and silver. This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for the highly mechanized PT. Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The deep ore zone (DOZ) is a coppergold deposit that is being developed underneath the current intermediate ore zone (IOZ) mine. One of the company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady ore flow of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) by 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). Non-renewable mineral raw materials are grouped into three categories to investigate ways leading to sustainable use of natural resources: 1.) metallic resources, 2.) non-metallic resources with the exception of the fertilizer minerals, and 3) the fertilizer minerals for the nutrients nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and phosphorous (P). With the exception of minerals in Group 3 which are essential for plant growth, mankind does not need raw materials as such, only the intrinsic property of a material that fulfils a useful function. This is especially true for non-metallic materials. Metallic resources have the best chance to become renewable if one makes optimal use of the resources of the man-made technosphere. For the fertilizer elements K and N there does not exist a problem, because sea water or air respectively provide an inexhaustible source for them. This does not apply to P however. So P is serving as one of our apposite case studies for solving sustainability challenges. For all the challenges along the road from a non-sustainable to a sustainable resource economy technology can be envisioned to come to the rescue provided conditions that are considered to be essential for sustainable use for all natural resources-- affordable renewable energy and human ingenuity to find new solutions for functions, to optimize processes and to minimize losses-- are satisfied.

"INTRODUCTION Iron ore beneficiation needs advances in areas such as process control, automation, burner and furnace designs, silica-free binders, and even alternative iron making routes. While some – like new binders – are only step-changes, all are tools that can help make the ironmaking industry more sustainable. This paper focuses on binders. Binders are added to iron ore fines before they are agglomerated. Binders are used to control the balling process and increase the mechanical quality (e.g. strength) of green-balls and pellets. Agglomeration usually follows thickening and filtration. Good-grade ores, which don't require upgrading, are wet ground to decrease particle size and increase specific surface area. Low-grade ores are often extensively upgraded through wet operations (flotation, dispersion and selective flocculation, magnetic separation, etc.). For both types of ores, thickening and filtration conclude the circuits so that moisture contents are lowered and the ores can be agglomerated. It's been known for a long time that thickening and filtration behaviors are influenced by zeta potential (Sandvik, 1979). Highly-negative zeta potential is good for dispersion while low zeta potential is good for filtration. So, the zeta potentials of iron ore particles are lowered with additions of acid or carbon dioxide, for example, to increase filtration rates and throughputs (Eisele et al., 2005). What happens to particles as their zeta potentials are lowered? Particles aggregate together, effectively forming larger particles. How stable then, are those aggregates during mixing and balling? Are they easily broken up during mixing (if mixers are even used)? Are they broken up during balling? Or, do the aggregates resist breakage so that the availability of ultra-fines, which are so beneficial for agglomeration (Stone, 1968), is decreased? For plants where high doses of bentonite are used as binder, the above questions may be of no concern. The bentonite adds the necessary amount of fines; however, even at those plants, the calcium and magnesium contents in the water affect bentonite's effectiveness (more magnesium and calcium means less effective bentonite). (Engesser, 2003) For plants where new silica-free organic binders are being developed and used, the above questions may need to be considered. The binder is only amongst the iron ore particles for a short period of time – until it burns away or thermally decomposes in the induration furnace – so the liberation, availability and distribution of fine particulates is very critical for the quality of balls and pellets. It was hypothesized that high zeta potential conditions would lead to good pellets, while low zeta potential conditions would lead to relatively bad pellets."

For many years, pulverized coal (PC) boilers in utility power plants have been the dominant market for domestic coal. Today, two new coal utilization technologies challenge the PC boiler's dominance. Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and "coal gasification/combined cycle" (GCC) stand on the verge of commercial demonstration in the utility environment at a scale of 100 MW. Developed over the past decade, these technologies respond to the demands for cleaner ways to burn coal and for more flexibility in fuel supply. In the near term, these are the "clean coal" technologies most likely to have a significant impact, because they are ready for commercial application. As for environmental acceptability, consider that just a few years ago one of the environmental slogans was "no coal in California." Indeed, the only large quantities of coal above ground in California at that time were in transit on the way to Asia. Today, thanks to new technology, we can point to two operational coal-burning plants in California and one in the works: * Cool Water GCC demonstration plant (100 MW) * California Portland Cement AFBC commercial cogeneration, near Riverside (190 000 lb/hr steam) * Energy Factors AFBC commercial cogeneration at Stockton, to be operational 1988 (44 MW)

The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

The Mission Unit of American Smelting and 'Refining Company is located in Pima County, Arizona, approximately twenty miles southwest of the City of Tucson. The Unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to Company Smelters at Hayden, Arizona, or El Paso, Texas Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tons per day concentrator gas started in the spring of 1960, The first ore was treated in mid summer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August of 1961. At that time over 46,000,000 tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tons per day. Total production to date (ore and waste) over 120,000,000 tons.

As one of the more important Industrials Minerals, gypsum occupies a significant place in the economy of the United States, particularly in that segment which can be loosely called the Construction Industry. For many years, products made from gypsum have been a major building material, and the usefulness and versatility of these products is such that their widespread use is expected to continue. In 1968, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the value of all gypsum products sold in the United States was 405,000,000 - and although this value has dipped from the 1964 high of $ 432,000,000, it is expected to trend upward in the next few years to equal and surpass this figure as the construction industry recovers from its current squeeze of "tight money" and high interest rates. There are many factors to be measured in determining the potential value of any mineral deposit, and how it might fit within its particular industry. What, then, are the qualities which a gypsum deposit must have in order to profitably participate in the four hundred million dollar plus business which is the gypsum industry? First let's consider the geology of gypsum, the geographic distribution of deposits, and the more important factors such as size, grade, capital requirements, and operating cost. Then, an understanding of the uses of gypsum, various types of products, and location of markets would be helpful, along with such other factors as the structure of the industry, price trends, etc.

The Occidental Oil Shale mining and retorting system for the production of shale oil has many advantages over the conventional underground mine and surface retort systems. For example only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported to the outside, where it blends with the existing shale talus found on most of the slopes in the immediate area. The retorted spent shale is retained underground so that it does not become a surface disposal problem. The process consumes only minor amounts of water which is produced in adequate amounts in the retorting to fulfill all mining operations needs without outside supplies. Noise and dust levels are kept to a minimum with most of the facilities located underground. The exception being the generating stations and facilities as required to monitor air and water qualities, and last but not least, more than four times as much oil is pro¬duced from a given acre than from conventional surface processing. With the increased thicknesses as available on the government monopoly area this number could be increased by a substantial amount.

The U.S. mining industry has made progress in reducing accidents and injuries, but interpreting safety data remains difficult due to changes in workforce size and productivity. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) uses tools like the pattern of violation (POV) and significant & substantial (S&S) calculator to monitor safety, though these have limitations. To address this, we developed an information entropybased risk (IER) index that combines various safety metrics, including citations, penalties and injuries. Using data from 2011 to 2020, the IER index was validated with statistical methods and clustering algorithms to ensure it accurately reflects risk levels. The analysis showed clear differences in risk across mining sites, proving the index’s usefulness. The IER index was then applied to a coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness. This new tool can help mining companies better assess their safety risks and take action to improve workplace safety.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

In recent years, slabs with a rough surface have captured a large share of the ornamental stone market. However, the main technologies used for this type of treatment are based on mechanical shock (bush-hammering) or thermal treatment (flaming or flame-finishing). These traditional technologies are widely used, but have many limitations that decrease their usefulness. The purpose of this study was to develop a technology that enhances the natural colors of the rock and produces a rough surface without compromising its mechanical characteristics, in contrast to traditional technologies. This report shows the technical, economic and aesthetic results obtained with a new water-jet treatment and compares it with competing technologies.

The problem of roof control in the coal-mining industry is of major importance inasmuch as 65 percent of all coal-mine fatalities result from falls of roof, face, or ribs. The Health and Safety Research and Testing Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa., is engaged in several programs directed toward increasing safety in coal mining. The Roof Control Research Group has 4 programs aimed at reducing roof fall accidents. One of these programs is the use of sonic techniques to explore mine roof strata.

Blast furnaces of high specific throughput capacities producing 10,000 tpd of pig iron or even more, require burden materials which, because of their chemical, physical and metallurgical properties, guarantee such high performances. Meanwhile, it should be generally accepted that for evaluating the quality of iron ore pellets, it is not sufficient to know the chemical analysis and the physical properties, i.e. grain size distribution, cold compression strength and abrasion of the fired pellets. It is indispensable to determine the metallurgical properties indicated by swelling, reduction-softening under load and reducibility, as well as grain disintegration in the low-temperature range in the beginning of reduction. By introducing new test methods, and in the face of the need to meet more strict requirements, pellet producers are being confronted with steadily increasing tasks and problems which require a deepening of our knowledge of the ways and means of making high-quality iron ore pellets.
