The network of freight tunnels in Chicago consists of about 62 miles of horseshoeshaped tunnels constructed typically less than 50 feet below ground surface. These tunnels serve as repositories of much infrastructure and should remain serviceable. The tunnels are often impacted by adjacent excavations and the question arises as to the existing state of stress in the final liner. This paper discusses construction of these tunnels and presents the results of finite element analyses which were used to obtain ranges for axial forces and bending moments that have developed in the final liner of the freight tunnels since their construction.

The advent of larger quantities of -1/4 inch coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content.

The past year has been a strange one for the fertilizer industry of the world and the United States. Listening to news stories, you would think the sky is falling on the world's agriculture and probably conclude that we should have had an exceptionally poor fertilizer season. In some respects, we did. Prices were low, profits were low, and in some cases nonexistent, but volume was good. We heard much in the press about the farmers' credit crunch. The truth of the matter is that only 6.6 percent of the U.S. farmers have debt-equity ratios of 70 percent or more, and a large percentage of our farmers have absolutely no debt but operate entirely on their own cash assets.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) established a Technical study panel (the Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the belt evaluation laboratory test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 91 - 107 cm (36- to 42-in.) wide conveyor belt. Due to today’s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 183 cm (72 in.) and wider conveyor belts. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. The world market for bunkers represents some 140 MT (1980) of marine fuel oil and distillates. This is equivalent to 23CMT of coal, a potential market for steam coal larger than the total seaborne trade of steam and metallurgical coal today, and an obvious area which could contribute savings in world oil consumption. Oil bunkers are lifted fairly evenly throughout the world, the main supplying regions being Western Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America and Japan (Figure 1). Not surprisingly, the main customers are the tankers representing about 50 percent of the world market - (95 percent of the Middle East Market) - dry bulkers represent some 30 percent and general cargo ships the rest.

A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain problem power plant flyashes which contain a high water soluble mineral content and which are known to yield inferior flyash based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash based structures. Favorable changes are evident in (1) sodium silicate consumption, where often approximately one-half of the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required; (2) processing costs; and (3) strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost instances-(above the cost of 30 dollars or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyashes) hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives required with problem flyashes to result in a savings of as much as nine dollars per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble, sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

The iron ore industry might justifiably claim to have originated the science of geophysical prospecting. Their use of geophysical methods was probably the first application of these scientific techniques to the search for economic materials although the exact origin is undoubtedly lost in the unrecorded observations of. some prospector experimenting with compasses or bits of lodestone. Since 1879 when Thalen published "On the Examination of Iron Ore Deposits by Magnetic Measurements" these methods have been a standard supplement to other prospecting techniques. However, many of the great ore bodies of the Precambrian iron ranges were not particularly suitable for geophysical work. The ores were oxidized and enriched through leaching of silica so that they were nearly non-magnetic and other physical properties which distinguished them from the wall rocks were largely destroyed. With the gradual exhaustion of these high grade direct shipping ores, and ores that could be beneficiated by simple means, the iron ore industry turned initially toward the importation of similar high grade foreign ores. At the same time, new processes for concentrating lower grade materials were being developed and older ones improved upon. These concentrates' when pelletized produced such important savings in blast furnace hot metal costs that they now command a premium in the iron ore market and have weakened the competitive position of the remaining high grade ores. The ore bodies now being sought are usually unoxidized and frequently they are also metamorphosed.

U.S. Borax has two tailings disposal requirements which are uniquely different in many respects, but with the common goal to minimize the impact on the environment, utilize dependable technology and minimize the economic impact. The existing borax mine in the grid Mojave desert of Southern California has gone through a series of changes in tailings disposal practices in the 56 years of operations, The other tailings disposal requirement is a new molybdenum mine, presently in the feasibility phase, in the high precipitation setting of Southeast Alaska. As far back as 1939 state laws have required reclamation of mined lands. Reclamation has been the topic of many discussions and presentations, especially since the late 1960's. In the past ten years many states have added legislation concerning the reclamation of coal-mined lands. In the near future, it seems certain that some federal regulations will be passed that will set minimum guidelines for the states to regulate. Besides the requirement of returning the land to the approximate original contour, future regulations will more than likely demand replacing topsoil from one to five feet thick. As regulations become more stringent, costs will rise accordingly. Since no one has developed a machine that can do all reclamation work by itself, it is necessary to review in detail the tools available and to select the most economical means.

"A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

A unique type of grinding mill liner has been developed by Waagner-Biro A.G. of Austria. This liner system, termed an angular spiral lining (.ESL), was, successfully tested by Magma Copper Company's San Manuel concentrator in both their 10 Ft x 10 Ft (3.05m x 3.05m) and 12 Ft, 6 In x 14 Ft (3.81m x 4.27m) grate discharge wet grinding ball mills. Magma Copper's savings in power and grinding balls justified conversion of more than half of their twenty-six ball mills to the ESL system.1,2 The ASL system was provided by the Capitol Castings Division of Midland Ross Corporation, the exclusive licensee for such conversions. Capitol Castings proposed the following as expected benefits from installation of an ASL system in an 18 Ft x 21 Ft (5.49m x 6.40m) overflow discharge wet grinding ball mill at the Pinto Valley Operation of Cities Service Company: "(a) Reduction of power consumption per ton of ore milled = 12%, (b) Increased throughput = 6%, (c) Reduction of ball consumption = 6%."

From comments and questions concerning the meaning of USNR, and "why is the Navy in the mining business?" I believe it is worth while to establish the background and purpose of our company. We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

According to accident statistics (l, 2), roof fall accidents occur quite frequently at the intersections of underground? openings and account for up to 30% of the roof fall fatalities. But this figure will certainly go up considerably if roof falls not associated with any fatal accident are included in the analysis. Unfortunately, nonfatal roof falls are seldom documented. In the underground coal mines, there are two types of entry intersections. One is the three-way (V type) and the other is the four-way (T type) intersections. A three-way intersection occurs whenever the mainline track haulageway turns at an angle into a section haulageway. The four-way intersections by far the most common type in the U.S. under-ground coal mines are formed by the intersections of two entries which are oriented perpendicular to each other or by the intersections of entries and crosscuts. However, crosscuts are frequently driven at an angle to the entry to facilitate machine movements. The four-way intersections formed by this method of crosscut development are angled. At the intersection of two underground openings, the diagonal roof span is wider than the width of each individual opening. This is one of the major reasons why roof falls occur more likely at the intersections than in the entry between pillars. Consequently, special intersection support plans are usually employed (Figs. 1 and 2) for intersections. The most popular practices are to decrease roof bolt spacing 1 ft. less than or to increase roof bolt length 1 to 2 ft. longer than those employed in the entry between pillars (3). The increase in bolt length or decrease in bolt spacing can be applied to all of the bolts in the intersection or employed only for the strategically located bolts depending on the individual mine practices. These rather generalized practices seems to be adequate for some areas but in many cases inadequate for others. Occasionally, the neighboring two lines of chain pillars are staggered such that the crosscuts in one row of chain pillars face the centers of the chain pillars in the neigh-boring rows. This layout forms T-type three-way intersections which are also inadequate for most weak roofs (3, 4). A study was therefore initiated to develop special techniques for intersection supports. The first phase of the study was the analysis of the stress fields for the underground entry intersections. A three-dimensional stress analysis was necessary for this purpose. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional problems of complicated boundary conditions are beyond the existing analytical methods. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was therefore employed in this study. In the analysis, square pillars of 40 feet wide and an entry height of 8 feet were assumed while entry widths varied at 14, 20 and 26 feet. This model was selected to simulate the mine where roof falls data were collected. The second phase of the study was the collection of field data. The sizes of the roof falls including heights, lengths and widths were collected and analyzed. In the third phase study, the results of the first and second phases were compared and discussed. The analysis of field data revealed an arching zone within which roof falls occurred. The arching zone above an entry obtained empirically was compared with the calculated stress contours. Assuming that the bolts must be anchored in the rock strata outside the arching zone, the preferable systems of bolting were proposed. Also the amount of pretension required to inhibit sliding between layers was discussed.

Marcona Corporation produces about 3.5 million long tons of iron ore pellets annually on its two travelling grate pelletizing machines at San Nicolas, Peru. During 1969, these pellets will be shipped to customers in four marketing areas--Japan, the United States, Europe, and South America. All of these sales are on the open market, and product quality is a major concern. Typical chemical, structural, and quality test results for Marcona pellets are given in Table 1. [ ]

"INTRODUCTION Background Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) has been a critical issue during the last decade in underground mines. This problem is threatening the health of mine workers, as well as the mine’s productivity. It has been confirmed that the diesel engine exhaust is the main source for the diesel particulate matter (DPM), and that it has the highest impact in raising carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxide of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons in the underground environment. Miners who are exposed to this kind of emission are at high risk for developing lung cancer and other lung diseases. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued standard rules to regulate diesel emissions in underground mines. The final ruling confirmed in 2008 that the total carbon should not exceed 160 µg/m3. (MISHA, 2008) Monitoring DPM in underground mines has become important to ensure compliance with the MSHA regulations. There are many different types of DPM monitoring systems that are currently being used in underground mines. Two methods are typically used for DPM sampling: the personal sampling method or the direct exhaust sampling method, which takes a direct sample from the engine’s tailpipe. Many mines do not recommend using the direct exhaust sampling method since it involves complex measuring equipment and procedures, as well as it is not regulated in the United States or Canada. Thus, the personal sampling method is the preferred method in many mines when taking DPM samples. Even this method includes many variations, such as the Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) method and the method devolved by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety NIOSH 5040. The NIOSH 5040 method is the preferred method overall because it gives more accurate measurements compared to the other methods. This method does not allow organic carbon sources other than those coming from diesel engine exhausts to interfere with the measurements, which otherwise would lead to overestimating the actual amount of the DPM in the mine environment. An impactor feature in the cassette, which holds the samples in the instrument, characterizes this method. Since the diesel particles are less than 0.9 micron, this impactor does not allow particles more than 0.9 microns to be collected in the cassette filter. The cassette is then analyzed in a lab and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and total carbon (TC) are determined. Lately, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new instrument that can use the same concept of NIOSH 5040, but with instant measurements of elemental carbon. It utilizes laser radiation with the cassette so it can give a real time measurement. The real time measurements give instant information about the underground environment that will allow the mining engineer to take immediate action and enact plans instead of waiting for results from the laboratories where NIOSH 5040 method may take several weeks to get the measurements."

The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

In the grinding of dry non-metallic materials such as rocks, ores, gypsum, lime, and cement clinker, it is recognized that only a relatively small portion of the energy is utilized for actual size reduction, and the major portion of the energy used is converted into heat. As a result, heat is generated inside grinding mills imparting to the ground product a higher temperature than that of the mill feed. In some cases, as for instance in grinding cement clinker and gypsum into finished cement, it may be desirable to keep this temperature increase within certain limits, to avoid any change in the properties of the product and, because consumers may specify a maximum temperature of the finished product for reasons associated, with the tulimate use of the cement. The actual proportions of heat and useful work are somewhat indefinite. Some tests have indicated that nearly all the energy is converted into heat, and. other investigators have found that they could account for "everything except the noise." Investigations sponsored by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and carried out with an adiabatic calorimeter, indicated that a surprisingly high 19 percent of the energy might actually be used for size reduc¬tion. Reducing this cement from a clinker size of 96 percent passing a No. 16 mesh sieve to a specific surface of 3,230 sq cm per gm (Blaine) will increase the temperature of the cement approximately 143F above the temperature of the feed, as explained later. If the tempera¬ture of the clinker therefore is 125F, the finished cement will be 268F, which in some cases may be too hot. : When cement temperatures approach a range during grinding where dehydration of the gypsum becomes a problem, a logical consideration would be some means of reducing the temperature before it attains the range conducive to gypsum dehydration. Regardless of the varying degrees of heat generated within the mill or mills during grindingto various finenesses, consideration of the maximum safe limit for any type of cement being ground, which may vary fromplant to plant, govern in refining the mill circuit to obtain a safe temperature range. All plants are not necessarily required to do the same cooling job, and may or may not use cement coolers following the grinding circuit. (Not discussed in this paper). In the past, various means have been employed for controlling this temperature increase, Such means have included water cooling of the outside of the mill shell; equipping the shell with cooling fins; injection of moisture inside the mill; ventilation through the mill; and., in cases of closed-circuit grinding, drawing cooling air through the classifier; the purpose in all such cases being to remove heat from the grinding system.
