The importance of coal in solving our energy problems has been widely discussed; the world demand for food requires increased fertilizer production and the minerals to produce fertilizer must be mined. We have seen an explosive increase in the demand for large stripping equipment. It is appropriate that we review this equipment and determine what can be done to improve productivity. While we have used coal mining as an example in the study, much of the discussion will apply equally to other forms of stripping.

Coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation is a promising technology for processing refractory iron ores. Analysis of the size distribution of metallic iron particles is an effective approach for exploring the mechanisms of coal-based reduction. As metallic iron particles exhibit very complex shapes compared with nature ores, approaches for measuring and characterising metallic iron particles still remain unclear. In this study, the size of metallic iron particles was measured and characterised using manual point-counting by optical microscopy technics and image analysis. The effects of CaF2 as an additive on behaviour of the particle size distribution (i.e. mean size and cumulative frequency distribution) were also determined. Results indicate that CaF2 had a significant effect on the growth of metallic iron particles. When the CaF2 dosage increased from 0 to 8%, the mean size according to the area method increased from 9.03 to 16.28 μm, while the promotion effect gradually weakened and generated many fine metallic iron particles when the CaF2 dosage exceeded 8%. An increase in CaF2 dosage also led to cumulative distribution curves gradually shifting to the right mainly because F− can break the crystal structure of each phase during the carbothermic reduction of titanomagnetite and reduce the stability of the lattice structure, thus reducing the melting point and accelerating the growth of metallic iron grains. Compared to different measuring methods, the area method is a more suitable approach for measuring and characterising the size of metallic iron particles.

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.

Kaolin-based pigments are the most widely used pigments in the paper industry. Several types are available and include standard hydrous, delaminated, calcined, chemically-structured, and most recently, composite pigments. Within each category, a spectrum of products is available to satisfy the application requirements of paper producers. The paper industry has a broad range of applications including fillers in woodfree and groundwood-containing papers, pigmented size press applications, ultra-lightweight and lightweight coated papers, coated merchant papers, cast coated papers and coated paperboard. Each application has its own set of performance criteria and suppliers must work with mills to identify appropriate product(s) to fulfill these requirements.

"Tunnel professionals should inform project stakeholders on the reality that tunnel projects are not 100 percent devoid of the need for excavations or public inconveniences during both design and construction phases. Competing stakeholder objectives to limit these disruptions must be weighed against the need to mitigate risks and to produce a constructible, operable and maintainable end product. Perhaps the approach we should take with stakeholders, also known as Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), is sharing memorable case studies that bring to life the potential risks so often buried within lengthy risk registers. This paper provides a sobering case study describing what can occur if the presence and/or location of utilities and other obstructions are not fully understood due to restrictions placed on exploration or mining operations. In this instance, the Microtunnel Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) encountered a buried concrete structure, followed by rows of abandoned wood piles, before finally colliding with an active high-pressure gas main under a bustling coastal highway. Multiple stakeholders imposed tight logistical and other work restrictions, compounding the difficulties experienced during the drive. However, the difficulties were effectively managed through the project team’s proactive collaboration and communication with everyone involved. INTRODUCTION Some of the most important decisions that influence the ultimate success or failure of a project may not be made by design engineers. Instead, these decisions are often made by project stakeholders and third-party agencies. Tasked with protecting the best interests of their users, these agencies are cautious of potential impacts associated with project construction and subsequent use. Unfortunately, actions required (or restricted) by stakeholders often result in unwanted ripple effects that negatively affect the very users they are trying to protect. For example, a mandate limiting a shaft site to an unreasonable size may be intended to reduce local business impacts, but may actually increase impacts as more supply and truck hauling is required."

Recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid is a newly developed source of uranium. Many processes have been developed but the OPAP (octylphenyl acid phosphate) process is still the valuable one because the OPAP reagent compound has the high extraction ,power and cheap cost. The OPAP process was already studied by murthy(1) in 1970 and its complete process flow sheet was first fulfilled by F.T. Hurst(2) in 1974. WCFC(3) (western Co-op Fertilizer Ltd.) in cooperation with ESI (Earth Science Inc.) set up the OPAP uranium recovery pilot plant in Canada in 1978. We have studied the OPAP process since 1974 and first improved the OPAP extractant by proper adjustment of the DOPAP/MOPAP mole ratio with CH3OH-H20 method, resulting in shortening the phase separation time and avoiding the precipitation occurrence in our process. Second, we utilize the reduction and oxidation occurring by DC power supply on either side of the membrane to achieve the extraction and stripping at the same time. An improved OPAP process in which high recovery yield of uranium and acid uncontaminated by iron has been developed in our laboratory.

In an attempt to replace the traditional cyanide process of extracting gold, a new technology using ammoniacal solutions has been developed. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated. An electrochemical cell in an autoclave has been introduced to carry out this study. The system consists of a gold working electrode, a platinum counter electrode, and an external saturated calomel electrode (SCE) which is connected to the autoclave system through a Birch wood plug. Techniques used in this study included potentiodynamic polarization, galvanostatic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and Tafel polarization. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms governing the dissolution process are presented.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, one and one-half miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Company operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica, and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Footers Sunbright, Virginia plant and to other customers. Exton, Pennsylvania and New Johnsonville, Tennessee plants produce lithium compounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market, and to the glass industry. Ceramic grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation.

The number of variables which can effect flotation of molybdenite is very large. This paper discusses the effect of two operating variables, namely, the degree of aeration and agitation, on the grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." The analysis of flotation results indicate that molybdenite can be characterized into fast-floating and slow-floating components. The rates of fast-floating components, which do not create a problem in flotation, could be varied by changing agitation of airflow rates. However, the rate of slow-floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time in the float machine. The degree of aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 with only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. The degree of agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits is subsequently discussed.

The Walworth Run stream was brick-culverted in the 1800s, converting it to a 16-ft diameter sewer. This Cuyahoga River tributary contributed to the infamous burning river that became the catalyst for USA’s environmental movement. The NEORSD has been working hard to reduce CSOs here, most recently by diverting Walworth Run’s 882 MGD of flow to the new Westerly Tunnel. This had to consider structure age/size, alluvial/glaciolacustrine deposits (requiring several ground support systems, groundwater control), and maintenance of massive flows. This paper examines challenges identified during design that supported the contractor in development of a risk-mitigating plan, culminating to successful implementation.

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

Jigging is a separtion process that has already been described by Agricola in 1556. Fine size material is normally treated in a hutch jigging process, in which the heavy particles are penetrating the jigging bed and are recovered in the hutch. In this process, a ragging consisting of the same or higher specific gravity particles is inserted upon the screen. The ragging is used mainly as a valve to maintain a constant upward flow of the water. Since the heavy particles should pass easily into the hutch, the ragging particles are up to ten times larger than the maximum feed size (1). In the fine size range - 1 mm the performance of jigs is mainly insufficient; some of the low density particles percolate the ragging while the hutch water flow prevents the fine heavy particles from entering the bed (2). By giving a thin layer of particles, which posesses a density sensitivity in case of certain adjustment of flow conditions, directly on the screen, the precision of separation can be increased. Stroke length and frequency have to be adjusted to give this filter layer a homogenous porosity between 60 and 70% during the pulsion phase, and the "en masse" lifting of the bed, as it is known in jigging of coarser material, has to be prevented (3). In this case, the jig cycle is only of minor influence.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. "According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

Factors which cause thiourea consumption in gold-leaching systems include adsorption by gangue mineral particles, complexation with base metal ions, thermal degradation, and oxidation by air/ferric iron. Of these factors oxidation by ferric iron is the most significant factor. Of course, ferric sulfate is desired as an oxidant for the gold leaching reaction, but an excess of ferric sulfate leads to high thiourea consumption. In this regard, the rate of gold leaching by thiourea must be balanced against the rate of thiourea decomposition. It is important to note that the thiourea decomposition reaction in ferric sulfate solution is relatively slow in pure solutions and has been found to be first order with respect to both thiourea concentration and total ferric iron concentration. However, when mineral particles from gold-bearing ores or concentrates are present, the decomposition rate can become quite significant. As might be expected, the catalytic activity of mineral surfaces varies with particle composition and size. Experimental results are discussed with respect to the consumption of thiourea.

Laboratory testing by the Federal Bureau of Mines has shown that the removal of insoluble slimes using selective flocculation and flotation is a viable method for treating low-grade potash ores which have a high content of water-insoluble impurities. Results indicated that up to 85 percent of the insoluble slimes could be removed from sylvinite ore containing 5 percent water insolubles and 13 percent K20 using nonionic or cationic polyacrylamide flocculants and cationic, anionic, and/or nonionic collectors. Subsequent potash flotation recovered up to 88 percent of the potash in rougher concentrates containing 47 to 57 percent K20. Sizing and cleaner flotation of the rougher concentrates upgraded the products to 60 percent K20. Filtration of the insoluble slimes flotation concentrates recovered 87 to 0 percent of the brine. Flotation concentrate filtration rates were 7 times faster than the filtration rates of mechanically deslimed products.

Stirred ball mill feed used for ultra-fine grinding application requires fine size separation step in order to avoid over-grinding. This paper presents the selectivity curves obtained for oil shale and complex sulfide are using 460 mesh (30 micron) Derrick vibrating screen. Interestingly, the selectivity curves generated from the experimental data were monotonic increasing selectivity for oil shale but not monotonic increasing for sulfide ore. These non-monotonic increasing selectivity curves were similar to the mechanical air separator fishhook selectivity curves described by Luckie and Austin. A 2 stage classification in series model describing the fishhook selectivity curve has been used in proposing the classification mechanism for fine vibrating screens when heterogeneous multicomponent sulfide are undergoes size separation.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

A major thrust in Industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements In control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.
