Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

Dredging and Flooding was completed on the Falconbridge Limited "New Tailings Area" in the period from 1996 through 1998, as part of their site closure measures. Part of the decision making process and closure planning was water quality prediction, including oxidation and diffusion modelling. The purpose of this modeling was to define the potential water quality that would result during and after dredging. A significant body of research on the geochemistry and oxidation kinetics of this site had been compiled. The results of the modeling provide practical insight on the potential water quality that may be expected. Water quality in the pond has steadily improved since flooding was completed with the exception of short term peaks during spring runoff. Aquatic vegetation is appearing through natural recovery and transplanting of local species, and colonies of minnows are now observed in the ponds.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. Kola Mining Institute has been carrying out investigations of the possibility to steepen the walls of the Kovdor open pit with the design depth of 600 m. Steeping (up to 60°) wall angles is done by double height (24 and 30 m) benches with vertical slopes. One of the safety factors of mining with such walls is choosing the width of the safety berms preventing against rock falling from the slopes into the pit working area. The test on rock falling from 24 m benches has shown that vertical slopes are not more dangerous compared to the inclined(60-75°) ones.

It is commonly recognized that seismicity can be induced by rock failures or slip along geologic structures around mining excavations. The unpredictable nature of these events and their proximity to the working area may raise safety concerns in underground mining operations. Modeling can be a useful tool for estimating seismic potential for a given mine layout, but the challenge is to detect a seismic event and estimate its intensity in the model. One well-documented approach is to monitor the variation in the energy content of the model and record potentially damaging seismic events when there is a significant release of energy. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) employed this approach using 3DEC modeling software to simulate the anomalous seismic events that occurred in a deep longwall mine in Virginia in 2005. A four-panel model of the mine was constructed utilizing a 2D cross section at the location of the mining face at the time of the event. Seismic potentials associated with the development of each panel are evaluated by recording the seismic energy released during the simulation. The results demonstrate the occurrence of two relatively significant events during the mining of the last panel, which are consistent with the historical observations at the mine.

Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

Rich iron ore deposits were discovered during the 1960's in the mountain range of Serra dos Carajas, State of Para, Brazil, near the headwaters of the Tocantins River some 400 miles southwest from the state capital of Belem. (See Fig. 1 and 2). The key to the successful exploitation of this deposit was the development of an efficient an economical transportation system. The rugged terrain, and the dense tropical vegetation of the Amazonian jungle and the irregular coastline with its high tidal range presented severe obstacles to the planning and building of such system. Starting in 1972 extensive surveys and studies were carried out by Soros Associates on behalf of CVRD to determine the optimum way of transporting the ore from the mine site to the markets, most of which are located overseas. Overland transportation to the coast, loading into seagoing vessels and the ocean voyage to the ports of destination was treated as an integrated system in these studies.

The analysis of ground water inflow and discharge from underground mines has received increased attention in recent years due to environmental issues which must be addressed under current state regulations for coal mining and processing operations. In particular, coal operators must assess the probable hydrologic consequences associated with mining activities, and must plan for mine water handling during operation and following completion of mining. The prediction of ground water inflow rates with future mine development allows preparation for potential operational problem and identification of inflow reduction methods. Similarly, evaluation of mine discharge rates is necessary to address potential long-term acid mine drainage (AND) concerns. As part of mine discharge analyses, methods. to control seepage and AMD can be considered. The objective of this paper is to discuss the practical applications of mine inflow and discharge analysis, describe the typical flow components, outline the procedures necessary to perform the analysis, and illustrate the modeling procedures and potential results of mine inflow and discharge predictions.

COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to model gas compositions in underground longwall coal mine gobs to study oxygen ingress and the development of potentially explosive methane-air mixtures that may form in the gob. The scenarios studied involve various headgate and tailgate ventilation and inertization schemes and controls. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at Colorado School of Mines have used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of bleeder and bleederless mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob. The back return was successful in maintaining sufficient oxygen concentrations in the tailgate corner of the longwall face.

To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes.
