Rich iron ore deposits were discovered during the 1960's in the mountain range of Serra dos Carajas, State of Para, Brazil, near the headwaters of the Tocantins River some 400 miles southwest from the state capital of Belem. (See Fig. 1 and 2). The key to the successful exploitation of this deposit was the development of an efficient an economical transportation system. The rugged terrain, and the dense tropical vegetation of the Amazonian jungle and the irregular coastline with its high tidal range presented severe obstacles to the planning and building of such system. Starting in 1972 extensive surveys and studies were carried out by Soros Associates on behalf of CVRD to determine the optimum way of transporting the ore from the mine site to the markets, most of which are located overseas. Overland transportation to the coast, loading into seagoing vessels and the ocean voyage to the ports of destination was treated as an integrated system in these studies.

We have all heard a great deal about how various projects were financed or certain companies were successful in obtaining a bank loan. There are many more projects and companies who fail to get the money they need. At least a portion of these failures, and a large percentage of the frustrations connected with even the successful financings, are a result of not understanding the process of obtaining money. Recent years have seen a proliferation of sources available to finance minerals operations, but let me assure you that these represent only a minor portion of the minerals financing market. The fundamental source of borrowed money to almost all minerals related companies remains the banks. Therefore, understanding the "Loan Approval Process" can easily mean the difference between getting the money or not. In the following pages I hope to provide some insight into what I define as the loan approval process. Having pre-offered my definition, I intend to delineate the various stages of the process and the planning and information I believe should be contained in each. My ultimate goal is to help you think like a banker and, in so doing, stay on top of the process so that you can successfully obtain the funding necessary for your projects.

The Cannon Mine is located in Chelan County, near Wenatchee, Washington, at the eastern foot of the Cascade Mountains. The mine is situated about two miles from the Columbia River, in the arid Columbia River Valley. Two hydroelectric dams provide electricity for the area, the Burlington Northern Railroad has a switch yard and loading facilities in Wenatchee. Approximately 25,000 people live in the area. The principal industry is fruit farming. Underground mining techniques are used to provide feed for a 2,000 tpd flotation concentrator at the site. The techniques are low- cost, high productivity methods which allow for a high extraction rate along with a high rate of recovery of the minable reserve.

In 1977 Kawasaki Steel Corporation (KSC) built No. 6 BF (Blast Furnace) with an inner volume of 4 500m3 as part of our program to produce 8.5 million tons of crude steel a year at Chiba Works. As the primary raw material to be used in No. 6 BF, we decided to use sintered ore, because we were confident in the obvious advantages of our technology developed by that time on sintering and BF operation using sintered ore. At Chiba Works, however, we had no space for the construction of a sinter plant, so we decided to build it abroad. Sintered ore is easily crushed and degradated. Producing sintered ore at a point far away from the blast furnace and transporting it across the ocean was the world's first attempt. To successfully realize it, we conducted a series of fundamental surveys and studies with special stress on the real aspects of degradation of sintered ore caused by long-distance transportation and handling and the ways and means to prevent the degradation. As a result, we decided to build a plant on the Mindanao of the Philippines.

San Diego’s need to access underground space has dictated a long history of tunnel construction. The subsequent need for water, coupled with San Diego’s natural attractiveness, has led to significant population increases and the need for the construction of even more tunnels. This paper will provide a historical summary of the progression of mines, tunnels and trenchless technology construction projects that contributed to the advance of current technology, feasibility, and constructability. A bibliography of relevant reports and data is included.

Forecasts indicate that the acid rain bill currently before Congress is likely to cause an increase in demand of 30 to 40 million tons per year of compliance quality coal from Central Appalachia. This represents a doubling of this segment of the coal business. This paper will examine how this doubling can be met, what the likely implications for pricing are, the major uncertainties associated with these predictions, and the likely outcomes of the growth in compliance coal. Finally, some implications for fuel planners will be discussed.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of the phosphate rock beneficiation process. They are large, averaging a square mile in size; unsightly, in that they protrude 20 to 50 feet (6 -15 meters) above natural grade; stabilization and reclamation is slow; and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. The State of Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds, but has enforced numerous policies along these lines. The current rules are given and interpreted, along with the reasoning for current policy. In addition, an overview of the history of the policies, and an attempt at explaining the reasons for the changes that have occurred is given. The industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions, having effect for decades on mine economics, in a constantly changing regulatory environment. The Bureau of Mine Reclamation is confident that a direction of regulation has been solidified, but changes are still to be anticipated.

Based on theoretical and experimental researches of phosphate and carbonate minerals flotation in the presence of soluable glass at various pH values and sodium silicate concentrations, it has been established that the presence of soluble glass in solution leads to formation of silicate compounds on the surface of phosphate and carbonate minerals causing change in their floatability for the worse. The harmful influence of soluable salts is done by tying of collector as metallic soaps, forming precipitates on the surface of minerals to be floated and causing their depression of flotation, and breaching of the froth etc. Depressing action of slimes and products of interaction with collector depends on the ratio of values and signs of potentials of the mineral surfaces. The possibility of phosphate and gangue minerals separation can be evaluated by comparing the minimum-necessary concentrations of collector required for their flotation.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. The design and planning for the construction of a new passageway to improve access and circulation to better accommodate anticipated increased passenger flow within Grand Central—42nd Street Station. The passageway includes the break-in of an over 100-year-old station cavern with an innovative design implementing a protective structure above the existing track to allow for safe train operations and passenger circulation during construction. Construction of the new passageway follows the Sequential Excavation Method. This paper will present the innovative solutions that went into the preliminary design and planning considering construction access, site logistics, risk management, structural retrofitting, instrumentation and monitoring, and impact assessments.

Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern's agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco's present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco's ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. "From monitoring gas levels and air quality in coal mines to protection from collisions for large vehicles at mine sites, SICK offers a wide range of sensors and systems to improve safety and to monitor potentially dangerous situations. SICK offers solutions for the analysis and monitoring of underground coal mining atmospheres. These systems supply the coal mine operator valuable safety and ventilation information, as well as data which identify and monitors atmospheres of those production areas within the mine which may or may not be worked, such as Goafs and sealed areas. Underground coal mines contain dangerous gases, which must be monitored and controlled in order to allow productive mining operations to take place and to minimize the risk of explosion. Underground mines are a potentially dangerous place for mine workers. These are the main reasons for using Tube bundle systems SICK has had great success in selling these systems into the Australian and New Zealand Markets and this is helped by the strong drive for mine safety from both the Mine Owners and the Regulatory bodies charged with the responsibility of ensuring Mine Regulations are met. The Australian mining industry uses Tube Bundle Systems at almost all underground sites, even after mining has ceases and the mine is placed in care and maintenance. Sick has been working in international markets for some time now but has had limited success in selling Tube bundle Systems to these markets. However in recent times there has been raised interest in Tube Bundle from China, India and Turkey as these countries strive to improve mine productivity and lessen the risk of explosion or Spontaneous Combustion. Our lack of penetration into International Coal markets has been very much based on the perceived cost of the system, not the benefits to safety and productivity. Unless a mine has had an event such as spon com or a Methane explosion they rarely consider the very low level measurement capability (20 PPM CO & 100 PPM CH4) or the long term trending benefits of the Tube Bundle system. It is only after a catastrophic event the System is considered. Real Time or electrochemical Sensors are commonly used to monitor the Mine Atmosphere, the real problems of methane build up or potential Spon Com in Goafs and sealed areas cannot be monitored using Real Time Sensors as the electrochemical cell deteriorates after approx. 12 months and in sealed areas these cells cannot be maintained or replaced. Whilst the Technique of Tube Bundle Systems is quite old SICK have spent many years redesigning the Tube Bundle System into a cost effective and real value for money product. The system uses state of the art sampling and highly accurate Infra-Red wide Spectrum Analysers."

Phosphate reserves have been and still are a controversial subject. Some published estimates are particularly conservative and have caused concern in government and political circles that southeastern phosphates are a dwindling resource. "Ores and ore bodies" are a function of economics that relate to a time/demand factor. The history of phosphates and other mineral commodities is one of mineral deposits (resources) ever becoming ore (reserves) via a long term logic based on price, supply, and demand factors operating through time and improved technology. Projections indicate that southeastern phosphates are sufficient for several centuries of operations at present production rates.

If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

Large scale grinding mills can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. These mills can be effectively used, but they must be free from design and manufacturing deficiencies if they are to reach their full potential and avoid costly downtime. This paper presents the evolution of today's complex grinding mill specifications and discusses the most important items to look for when buying new equipment. It emphasizes the need to monitor specification requirements during design and manufacture. It also discusses the growing trend to have grinding mills fabricated in overseas plants, and the importance of recognizing this when preparing specifications.

The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes.
