The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a mine rescue team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

Slope failures very commonly occur during a long period of heavy rainfall and groundwater rise. The failures pose a substantial risk to people, infrastructure, and equipment downslope. In the recent past, the mining industry has faced an increase in tailings dam failure due to several reasons including pore pressure increases in the dams. Many failures have been observed to occur during times of water level fluctuations but the critical factors that influence the initiation of slope failures still need to be adequately clarified. To investigate these factors, laboratory experiments were conducted on model sandy slopes to determine pore pressure-induced slope failure initiation. This study also presents a method to examine water seepage through soil slopes using an ultraviolet (UV) dye and a UV flashlight. The small-scale model test simulation demonstrated failures induced by either water percolation from the upslope tank at a constant level or by raising the water level at intervals. A bottom chamber fully filled with water to replicate groundwater rise was also simulated. The soil slope was monitored at every stage to study the deformations and behavior until failure occurred. Results gathered from the controlled laboratory conditions were useful for the verification of the numerical modeling method created in the computer program Slide. The analysis showed that slope failure always occurred when the toe was fully saturated. High pore pressures and seepage forces reduce the shear force at the toe to almost zero causing it to slide. A comparison of slope height to water level also indicated an average of 96% water level to cause a failure. At this point, the soil slope is fully saturated and has no matric suction. The findings in this study show that, by monitoring the moisture content of slopes, failures can be predicted.

Approximately 40 concentrators throughout the world have successfully adopted computer control for flotation circuit operation since 1969. Successful use of flotation control, gaining up to 2% efficiencies, has largely derived from effective employment of on-stream slurry analyzers and integration of key measurement data through digital processors. Requirements for reliable measurement have also led to improved functional reliability in magnetic flow meters, pH, reagent feed, and other key elements. Methods used in computer control of flotation will be reviewed and variations in operating philosophies will be described with reference to the approaches taken to flotation automation.

The abstract discusses the extraction of silica from nickel laterite ore using a hydrothermal process with sodium hydroxide. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH-to-ore ratio on silica extraction were investigated. The optimal conditions were determined, achieving over 98% silica extraction. The mechanism involves the reaction of Si in lizardite and quartz with sodium hydroxide, forming sodium silicate solution. Other metals like Mg, Fe, and Ni are enriched in the residue.

Semi-autogenous, (SAG), milling operations can realize substantial Increases in mill throughput by removing and crushing critical size, slow grinding, material from the SAG mill. Full-scale plant testwork showed that modifying the Kidston SAG/ball circuit to a semi-autogenous-ball milling-crushing (SABC) circuit would increase plant throughput by 25 to 30%. The methods used to determine the value of the SABC circuit and the design of the circuit are discussed.

Surface tension and its control are important in the concentration of ores by froth flotation, both in terms of producing the proper bubble size distribution and to render the ore surface of interest hydrophobic such that adhesion to a bubble will take place. The influence a substance has on surface tension has traditionally been measured using static, equilibrium techniques. Yet many applications such as flotation involve rate-related effects of surface tension where equilibrium values are not reached. In the time frame of 1 - 300 seconds, aging effects have been noted for bubbles formed in dodecylamine acetate solutions; a slow decrease in surface tension occurs until an equilibrium value is reached, as studied by Finch and Smith (1972). Since stationary bubbles do not exist in flotation cells because of the turbulence generated by agitation and aeration, it is more likely that the chemical composition of the bubble is determined during its formation, under dynamic conditions. The chemical composition is extremely important because the induction time required for a particle-bubble entity to collide and adhere to each other is augmented by favorable surface tension (wetting) proper- ties between the surface of the particle and the bubble air-water interface or envelope, as considered by Mackenzie and Matheson (1963). Finch and Lyman (1976) have established that the probability of a "permanent" attachment taking place during this contact time is aided by the ability of an oil droplet (viz. bubble) to relieve non- equilibrium surface tension effects which are involved in the water-thinning process. This Maragoni effect, or surface elasticity, can be considered in the context of particle agglomeration addressed by Kao and coworkers (1975). Water drainage leads to the formation of a collector-frother meniscus appearing between the colliding entities, arising from their combined partial immiscibility in the water phase and promoted by hydrophobic bonding within the interface. Together they constitute a liquid bridge whose force of attraction drawing the particles together is proportional to the interfacial tension existing between the water phase and liquid bridge. This adhesive force shows an approximate linear decrease with separation distance until rupture occurs, that is, FX = Fmax (1 ? X/Xr) (1) for a distance of separation X and rupture distance G. The greater the surface elasticity of the bubble, the greater will be the rupture distance and the better will be the force of adhesion. Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. Further development of the Nitric-Sulfuric Leach (NSL) process has led to an improved design of the leach and nitric acid recovery steps. NO produced in the leach step is reacted with oxygen, regenerating N02, which is sparged directly into the leach reactor. Leaching is simplified to two steps and the nitric acid plant is replaced with an oxidation recycle gas sys-tem. Laboratory work substantiated the concept and led to selection of operating conditions. The lab work also pointed to improved process control compared to use of nitric acid as the sole oxidant. Recovery of copper from purified pregnant liquor is modified to use air agitation electrowinning improving cathode quality and lowering tankhouse costs. Economic evaluation shows reduction of capital requirements from $2400/AT to $2000/AT in 1978 dollars for 50,000 TPY of copper production.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

Representative samples of a composite mixture of three typical Cu/Zn complex sulphide ores, namely Black-, Yellow- and Altered-ore, from the Cayeli deposit in Turkey, were used for leaching tests in 2.2 M FeCl3, or 1 M CuC12-2 M NaCl solution in the temperature range from 313 K to 363 K (40O to 90O C), with and without the presence of an organic solvent for elemental sulphur, such as CCl4. The leaching rates of copper and zinc were quite high, as expected, in FeCl3 solution and complete recovery of both metals was obtained at the highest temperature when the solvent was present. However in CuC1, solution, extraction yields of the order of 95% only for Cu and Zn were achieved and the positive effect of the solvent was not clearly shown. The kinetics curves of Cu leaching by FeCl3 indicated a model of reaction rate depending on the particle surface, as in a chemically controlled reaction, in tests with the presence of CCl4. Without the solvent, or in CuCl2 media, the model of the diffusion controlled reaction seemed to prevail. Values of apparent activation energy, in both of the leaching processes, were determined and compared with those reported in literature.

COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. Speed and torque control of standard A.C. induction motors can be accomplished using a variety of devices ranging from mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical. Also, the motor can be specified as an A.C. wound rotor or D.C. motor using the associated controls. Normally, any one of these drive types can be adequately used to provide the torque control necessary to accelerate a conveyor belt system. The selection will depend on the economics, experience, and preference of the designer or end user. These drive types will be presented from a functional and performance viewpoint to assist in the understanding of the available technology.

Mill drums are essential equipment in various industries for the comminution of materials. To optimize their design and operation for efficient and cost-effective processing, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the mill drum under various operating conditions. This study investigates the behavior of a mill drum using a combination of experimental and numerical methods. The factors that can influence the behavior of the mill drum, such as the size and shape of the mill, grinding media, rotational speed, filling level, and material properties, are discussed. Experimental methods can be limited in obtaining measurements of internal processes, so numerical methods such as the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are also used to simulate the behavior of the mill drum. In this study, the experimental measurements of the motion of the grinding media are obtained using computer vision methods, and the numerical simulations are calibrated using the experimental results. A designed experiment approach is used to evaluate the performance of the mill drum under various operating conditions. The results of this study can be useful for the design and optimization of mill drums to achieve better performance and energy efficiency.

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Surface subsidence is becoming an increasingly important factor in the economics of mining Louisiana salt domes due to, amongst others, excessive shaft deformations and land loss to encroaching sea water. The vast majority of subsidence studies have been undertaken on bedded, tabular deposits. It is important to understand the causes of subsidence due to mining domal salt and how it can be minimized. The paper will review the major differences between subsidence caused by domal and tabular evaporite mines, the problems encountered in predicting subsidence, the factors that influence subsidence and, finally, possible alternative mining methods.

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.
