In a mineral processing plant there are a number of routine decisions which are based at least in part on the plant's metallurgical performance. Among these are those related to: 1) equipment functioning properly 2) suitable operating conditions 3) reagents achieving desired results 4} determining operating response to changes in ore 5) defining circuits offering potential for improvement A step beyond the routine, are the periodic management evaluations of operating supervision and technical assistance, which are based largely on profit -a direct function of are availability, metallurgical performance and operating costs. The "yardstick", excuse me -"meterstick", by which performance is best measured is the plant metallurgical balance, which tells not only what was produced but how it was produced. Since this metallurgical balance is directly related to both plant profits and individual rewards, it is only reasonable to make that "meterstick" as precise as humanly possible.

The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.

The iron mine and beneficiation facilities of Marcona Mining Company are located on the coast of south central Peru. The facilities include an open pit mine, crushing, concentrator containing grinding, magnetic-separation and flotation facilities, pelletizing plants and a completely self sufficient infrastructure. Total production capability is about 10,000,000 DLTPY, of which almost 6,000,000 DLT result from the fine-grind magnetic concentrate. Over 1,500,000 DLT of fine-grind concentrate is obtained from processing high-pyrrhotite ore. Although the orebody contains quantities of oxidized primary ore and transitional ores (mixed magnetite and hematite), the principal ore is predominantly a coarsely crystalline to fine grained massive magnetite.(l-3) In the primary ore the major impurities found are silicates and the iron sulfides- pyrite and pyrrhotite. Sulfur levels typically average about three percent although levels of five percent are not unusual and some ores contain up to ten percent total sulfides. In general the silicates and pyrite are readily rejected from finely ground primary ore by magnetic separation and very basic froth flotation processes. The high iron, low sulfur concentrate produced is particularly suitable for production of high quality oxide pellets. However, pyrrhotite is not removed from the magnetite matrix by either of' these simple beneficiation methods.

The kinetics of atmospheric sulfuric acid leaching from a Brazilian nickel laterite ore was assessed using distinct reducing agents and ore mineralogy. This transitional ore contains 1.63% Ni distributed as 1.27% in coarse size (− 500 + 150 μm), mainly as silicates (lizardite and chlorite—28.6%), and 2.06%in the fines fraction (− 75 μm), mainly as iron oxy-hydroxides (goethite and hematite—49%). The effects of temperature, acid concentration, reducing reagent type, and concentration were evaluated. The − 75 μm fraction limited the leaching efficiency and the use of reducing media with thiosulfate improved leaching and Ni-Fe selectivity. However, at constant Eh of 626–743 mV and a pH range between 0.2 and 1.1, no substantial rise in metals extraction, except for Co and Mn, has been observed. In order to determine the process control at 95 °C, two regions in the extraction curves were used in combination with the shrinking core model. Control by porous diffusion was observed and the kinetic constant was found to be in the order kFe<kNi<kMn<kCo<kMg for atmospheric leaching without Eh control. In reducing media for the first 15 min of leaching, the kinetic constant was found to be kFe<kNi<kMg≅kCo<kMn as derived from Ni disseminated into iron oxides structures.

"It has been more than 10 years since Montana Resources’ copper/molybdenum mine has had a lost-time injury at its site in Butte, MT. With more than 350 employees and an average production of about 15.5 Mt/a (17 million stpy), which includes 29.5 kt (65 million lbs) of copper and 4 kt (9 million lbs) of molybdenum, the mine’s journey to a decade of exemplary safety is an impressive feat that has required hard work, commitment and, most of all, leadership from every level of the operation.It has not always been an easy journey, nor has it been one without scrapes and bumps along the way, but it is one that has produced stellar results. Mike McGivern, vice president of human resources, and Pete Steilman, safety manager at the mine, spoke with Mining Engineering about how the operation transformed from a site that was accustomed to collecting citations for safety violations to one that is now collecting awards for its safety record.Simply put, Montana Resources has made safety a value and the people its top priority.The operations faced many predictable challenges in 2003, when the mine was being brought back online after three years of sitting in care-and-maintenance status. It had been shuttered in 2000 because of low commodity prices and high operating costs, and, in the three years that the mine was idled, the equipment became dilapidated, and some of it was no longer in compliance. Less than half of the workforce returned to the site for the restart, and the team was challenged with getting the gears turning again to produce copper and molybdenum. But the most daunting challenge of all of was keeping the workforce safe during the transition.In the first few years of operation the mine racked up citations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at an alarming pace, so much so that in May 2006, Montana Resources received a letter from the MSHA District Office informing the company that the operation was being placed on the Potential Pattern of Violations list due to its excessive citation history and high rate of significant and substantial citations. It was clear that something significant had to be done to change the course of action at the mine."

Introduction In October of 1961 Texas Gulf Sulphur Company contacted the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory, of the North Carolina State University, and requested assistance in the development of a phosphate ore body in Beaufort County. The main: objectives of the work at Asheville were defined as follows. The Laboratory should try to determine on the basis of drill core samples, submitted by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, the highest grade of phosphate concentrate that could be obtained with high recoveries from North Carolina ore, the thickness of the ore body that could be treated economically in one section, and the quantity of concentrate that could be obtained per acre. The results should be compared with data obtained from the treatment of Florida ores. It was important to use mineral preparation methods during the initial laboratory work that could be verified later by continuous pilot plant operation and could be scaled-up for a commercial plant. The writer was in charge of the project at the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory and participated in the development of one of North Carolina&apos;s greatest mineral resources from the first drill core examination to the production of the first poundage and tonnage quantities of flotation concentrates. The Lee Creek phosphate mine and mill was put in operation in early 1966 and can produce three million tons of phosphate concentrate a year. Sulfuric- acid, and phosphoric acid plant, diamonium phosphate plant and triple super phosphate plants came on stream in 1967; at that time they were the world&apos;s largest. "Hecla Limited is nearing completion of the Lucky Friday Mine No.4 shaft located in Mullan, ID. The shaft is collared at the 4940 level of the mine and will have a final mine level depth of 8620, or 9,590 feet below the surface. After reaching the 7400 mine level the shaft encountered ground deformation higher then allowed for in the design for a circular shaft excavation and concrete lining. This additional ground deformation required portions of the shaft concrete liner to be reinforced with frameless, steel liner plate. To eliminate the installation of the liner plate from the remaining shaft development, the design of the shaft excavation starting at the 7650 mine level was changed to an elliptical cross section based on the overall stress field orientation as well as the orientation of the structure of the host rock surrounding the shaft. The elliptical cross section was instrumented to confirm the shaft excavation and lining was performing as designed. This design change has allowed the shaft to continue to the planned 8620 mine level without the need to install liner plate in the shaft or change the overall functionality of the shaft or the Lucky Friday life of mine plan.INTRODUCTION Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho (Figure 1). Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Lucky Friday’s #4-Shaft is a 5.5-m (18-ft) finished diameter, internal shaft, or winze, being sunk to the north of the Gold Hunter vein system, from the mine’s 4760 level, 1,743-m (5,720-ft) below the surface, to the 8620 level, 2,923-m (9,590-ft) below the surface. The shaft is designed to provide access to the deep, high-grade zones of the Gold Hunter in order to increase the mine’s production and operational life. Design and engineering began in 2006, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2009."

Mining accidents due to inrushing water are caused by sudden changes in seepage owing to structural damage to key strata of the aquiclude. The backfill mining method can be used to control the movement of the strata, weaken the evolution of fractures owing to damage by key aquiclude strata (KAS), and control the channel for inrushing water. This study develops a mechanical model of a composite beam on a non-uniform elastic foundation of the KAS by analyzing the coupling relationship between the filling body and the key water-resisting layer of the aquiclude. Equations of the deflection-induced deformation, bending moment, and maximum tensile stress of the KAS are analyzed, formulae to calculate the allowable tensile stress and backfill materials’ compaction ratio (BMCR) to ensure structural stability are derived, and are used to provide the critical BMCR for their structural instability. The results of field measurements show that the subsidence of the roof was 600–700 mm with an average BMCR of 80.63%. Damage to the overlying strata was controlled to ensure safe mining and the disposal of solid waste from the aquifer. The research here is useful for ensuring safety during mining while protecting water resources.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto&apos;s Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology&apos;s photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.

Wireless technology is a hot topic for anyone involved in the design, operation, maintenance or upgrading of mines or mineral processing plants because wireless technologies overcome barriers that have prevented many useful data inputs. Wireless communications can contribute to worker safety, satisfy environmental concerns, support plant security, track human and physical assets, and improve equipment maintenance. The cost structure of wireless is compelling and users can realize savings ? up to 90 percent less installed cost than wired instruments ? since wireless technology eliminates the need for expenses associated with cabling, engineering, construction and documentation. Many applications previously considered too expensive have become economically feasible with wireless. Two examples are continuous monitoring of safety showers to notify operators when one has been activated, and monitoring effluents to ensure environmental regulations are being met. In many cases, wireless transmitters can be installed where wired devices were too expensive to justify, or were not feasible due to physical or technical barriers. Examples include monitoring temperature measurements inside a rotating reactor or monitoring process variables in a tough, corrosive environment too challenging for a wired solution. Wireless also gives operating personnel mobility with the ability to communicate from remote or hard-to-reach zones. According to a recent Venture Development Corp. survey covering radio frequency (RF) of microwave industrial monitoring and control products, these features are contributing to the expected nationwide growth rate for industrial wireless applications of 19 percent annually from 2007 to 2012 (Taylor, 2008). At the same time, mineral producers have many questions about wireless systems including their applicability, reliability and security in this industry. Just what can wireless do? Is it secure and reliable? Can these instruments stand up to the rigors of the industry? Can wire-less technology provide the flexibility needed for mining applications?

The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. Direct mineral carbonation has been investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2 into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results have been achieved using heat pretreated serpentine feed material and high partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2). Specific conditions include: 155°C; P002=185 atm; 15% solids. Under these conditions, 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy has been utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products, and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths.

"Mine face ignition due to a high levels of methane is one of the most common fire incidents in underground coal mines. This work exams ignition scenarios in continuous miner headings. Depending on the magnitude of the ignition or resulting fire, the ventilation curtain in the continuous miner (CM) heading may be damaged or dislodged, affecting the ventilation into the area. A computational study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of damage to the ventilation curtain on the ventilation flow into the CM area. The computational fluid dynamics software Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), Version 6.0 was used to predict the conditions that develop due to a 200 kW fire in the coal mine face following a methane ignition with different levels of curtain damage. Smoke layer depth, temperatures and mass flow into the CM area were used to evaluate the impact of no damage to the curtain, partially dislodged curtain, and fully removed of the curtain. Partial removal of the curtain allowed more smoke to accumulate in the CM area and a reduction in ventilation into the CM area. With full removal of the curtain, the smoke accumulated through the entire depth of the CM area and flowed out the entrance to the CM area and the ventilation completely bypassed the region. INTRODUCTION Active working faces in underground coal mines are one the most hazardous locations in terms of fire events. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data analysis, the highest number of non-fatal fire incidents was reported at mining faces, intersections and crosscut areas in comparison with other locations from 2000 to 2012. About 464 fires happened at active working faces from 2000 to 2012, most consisting of a methane ignition, in some cases followed by localized fire. These are high risk incidents due to the potential to raise float dust and damage ventilation systems, particularly auxiliary systems such as curtain or tubing. Depending on the magnitude of the ignition or fire, the ventilation curtain in the continuous miner (CM) area may be damaged or dislodged, affecting the ventilation into the area. Five computational fluid dynamics (CFD) scenarios were considered to investigate the smoke layer depth, temperature, visibility, mass flow rate, and the behavior of airflow in an entry with a continuous miner (CM) located in it. The state of the auxiliary ventilation was varied based on the assumption that as an ignition increases it magnitude it will affect ventilation curtain proportionally. Visibility and temperature along the height of the entry at different sections were investigated and the interface height at each section was determined. Also, the fresh air height was studied for tenability analysis in future. FDS, Version 6.0 was used to predict the conditions that develop due to a 200 kW fire on the coal mine face following a methane ignition with different levels of curtain damage. Smoke view software was used as the post processor to visualize and analyze methane fire behavior at the face. Most entry fires are reported as fuel-controlled fires as they are rarely restricted to air access (Ingason et al, 2014). The working face fire in the following models was assumed to be a fuel-controlled fire."

A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

"Past heap leach design has evaluated hydrodynamic parameters based on a uniform particle size of heap material, but has ignored the equal importance of the instability of fine migration within heap stack in the beginning stages of the irrigation process. The proposed probabilistic model evaluates internal fine erosion and segregation potential of well-graded crushed ores by considering the entire particle size distribution shape and site compaction degree. Using this model, unsaturated flow model parameters were successfully evaluated based on synthesized soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). Additionally, one-dimensional unsaturated transient flow modeling with Hydrus 1D® showed that the different recovery efficiencies of heap material under unsaturated flow patterns depending on the particle size distribution and compaction degree of heap material. Agglomeration preprocess employed by most heap leach sites can reduce the potential of fine erosion within heap material significantly, but internal stability of crushed ores and hydrodynamic-based analysis of heap material’s pore structure is equally important in the prescreening stage in order to improve efficiency of the heap leach and avoid a costly agglomeration process. INTRODUCTION Accurate estimation of heap leach recovery is a difficult task due to the variety of design parameters that need to be considered - such as geochemistry, hydro-dynamics, and geotechnical design aspects, most notably particle size distribution through the process of agglomeration. After agglomeration techniques were introduced to heap leach design, the influence of particle size distribution and compaction degree in enhanced heap leach recovery has been neglected. The main purpose of agglomeration is to prevent fine segregation and internal erosion during and after heap stacking for well graded crushed ores, which will eventually diminish heap reach recovery. Recent studies show that agglomerated heap materials that had been consolidated at 10 meters below heap surface can release the fines after contact time with lixiviant to the compacted heap material and produce poor drainage performance (Milczarek et al, 2013). It must be noted that engineers and practitioners should investigate feasibility of agglomeration benefit prior to heap leach design because the agglomeration process can incur up to 20 or 30% of project costs. Internal stability of stacked heap material is mainly governed by the particle size distribution of crushed ores. Depending on this stability, segregation and internal erosion of fines can be mitigated by the application of moderate compaction effort during heap construction. Investigation of segregation and internal erosion potential therefore takes precedence for well graded crushed ore since reaction time and contact area with lixivant are greater in finer ores."

Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world&apos;s output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

"INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

The use of the underground space has been a recurring issue in human history, whereas the reasons for building subsurface structures have changed over time. In the decades to come, the world will be marked by a variety of underground projects never before seen. This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.
