Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. "INTRODUCTION “Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole” (Baxter and Parks, 1939) “An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence. The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling. Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive.” (McKinstry, et al., 1948). In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not alone on the number of samples but also on proper distribution of them throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Therefore it is important to select the places in such a way that all parts of the orebody will be represented. “For those who cultivate land which is alike arid, heavy , and barren, and in which they sow seeds, do not make so great a harvest as those who cultivate a fertile and mellow soil and sow their grain in that. Suboleski and King (1990) analyzed the reasons for the dramatic increase in underground coal mine productivity during the last 10 years. This paper examines whether this increase can be extended. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of a wet head continuous mining machine for reducing dust exposure for continuous miner operators. Wet head technology delivers water via sprays to the continuous miner's cutter head as opposed to traditional standard sprays located on the boom and body of the mining machine. The sprays, positioned directly behind each bit on the cutter head, deliver water at the point of attack, serving to cool the bits during mining to reduce the potential for frictional ignitions. The sprays also flood the coal with water to potentially suppress dust generation. Dust surveys were conducted at several mines to evaluate the wet head's effectiveness to control respirable dust exposure at the continuous miner operator location and in the immediate return. Results show that the wet head miner improved air quality at both locations to varying degrees in some cases and not in others when compared to a continuous miner with a standard spray system.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open-pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as laser scanning (LiDAR) and photogrammetry surveying devices have become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely and safely, rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing. This article specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. Point clouds. The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open-pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Fig. 1).LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device.Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles and even in a mobile backpack shown in Fig. 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds,” but this article does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility."

In planning an underground room and pillar mine, the selection of the shaft or portal location and the orientation of the main haulage arteries is of paramount importance, particularly in view of the high dependence of the cost of truck haulage on the proper definition of these parameters. In an effort to facilitate this selection a computer program was written which, by relating the truck characteristics to the areal configuration of the property or ore-body, derives the volume-weighted total fuel and time requirements for hauling ore from every panel within the property to a specified portal or shaft location through a predetermined gridwork of haulage drifts. By varying the size and orientation of the gridwork and the location of the portal or shaft access, an infinite number of configurations can be investigated. The results of this analysis can be plotted to indicate the optimum conditions.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

"Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. Two sectional block model views in Hexagon Mining’s MineSight 3D, along with the pit designs and geologic solids are shown in Fig. 2."

La Espingarda kaolin deposit was formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rhyolitic rocks belonging to Jurassic Marifil Formation. Three volcanic lithofacies were identified: porphyric biotitic ignimbrites (PBI), a coarse lithic ignimbrite (ILG), a fluidal intrusive rhyolite (RFI), all kaolinized in different degrees. The alteration covers an ellipsoidal area of ~20,000 m2, with its alteration decreasing downwards and disappearing at 8-12 m from the surface. The length to thickness ratio of alteration is 60:1. An erratic silicification was found as small zones (<3 m2) of quartz stockwork. The mineralogy is kaolinite + quartz + feldspars + Fe-oxyhydroxides ± halloysite ± illite and interstratified I/S, although the relative proportions change in each rock type. Due to coarse grain size and high quartz content, natural kaolin is unsuitable for slip cast ceramics, unless beneficiated. Washed ILG kaolin has the best rheological properties and behavior in casting and drying for its mineralogy, particle size distribution, thin texture and surface activity, as well as a certain fusibility and firing kinetics. PBI and RFI kaolins, due to finer texture, smaller grain size, lower surface activity, and higher halloysite amount, have worse slip viscosity and thixotropy that are due also to soluble salts. For the same reason, they have good casting and drying properties, but their purity brings about higher softening temperatures and water absorption. Several parameters are used to discriminate between hypogene or supergene kaolinite genesis. The hydrothermal genesis is mainly sustained by fluid inclusion temperature (150-180ºC) in quartz veinlets, while weathering is supported by deposit morphology, simple mineralogy, kaolinite stable isotopes (d18O ? 18, 13; dD ? ?59; ?85) and paleoclimatic record. It is concluded that a weathering process formed the main alteration with some participation of steam-heated meteoric waters. Neither the contents of Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, nor drill data support the existence of any epithermal gold mineralization at the kaolinite bottom.

Research efforts have been made to characterize a refractory Brazilian bauxite ore composed basically of gibbsite, kaolinite and quartz. Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis of the unbroken ore has been used to describe the liberation characteristics and the association between mineral phases. The linear grade distributions for selected particle size fractions were determined by means? of a particular implementation of King&apos;s Random Fracture Model that uses the exponential model for the distribution of linear intercepts through both dispersed (kaolinite) and continuous (gibbsite) phases. The corresponding volumetric grade distributions were then determined by means of a constrained optimization technique for the solution of the transformation equation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out to determine the kinetics for particles of different sizes and the results correlated with the liberation spectrum for each size class.

Worldwide, promulgation and enforcement of health and safety laws and regulations have been the primary means of ensuring minimum and uniform standards of health and safety in the mining industry. In U.S. coal mines, a new era was ushered-in in 1969 for the control of health hazards from respirable coal mine dust. Since then significant progress has been made on all aspects of the respirable dust problem-its definition, monitoring, reduction, and control. In the intervening years, our ability to monitor, analyze, and characterize the mine atmospheric environment and the health of miners has increased many fold. Also, advancements in production technology have far outdistanced enhancements in environmental control technology. Therefore, questions are continuing to be raised on the adequacy of the characterization and control measures with regard to both the airborne respirable dust in mines and the health effects of respirable dust. Late in 1995, the Secretary of Labor appointed an Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Pneumoconiosis Amona Coal " Mine Workers (Dust Advisory Committee) to review the progress towards elimination of coal worker&apos;s pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis, and in the program to control respirable coal mine dust in underground and surface mines, and make recommendations including improved standards and other appropriate measures for the control of exposure to airborne coal mine dust. The Committee&apos;s report was released in October, 1996. In this paper, a summary of the recommendations of the Committee is presented. A brief discussion of the background, and the issues and findings leading to the recommendations is also presented. The Committee concluded that the progress made towards making mines safer from the health hazards of respirable coal mine dust is substantial but that it is not sufficient to achieve the intent of the 1969 Coal Act. The Committee&apos;s recommendations encompass a wide range of issues addressing permissible exposure limits (PELS), sampling, dust control plans, hazard and medical surveillances, role of miners, training, and research and development.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn&apos;t until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) ventilation gallery was used to study methane-air flows around a continuous miner mockup with water sprays and a scrubber fan. Methane gas was released from pipes located at the face to simulate face gas emissions. Methane concentrations and air velocities were measured while varying parameters such as airflow quantity, entry width (sump or slab cut), and face ventilation configuration (blowing or exhausting curtain). Test data showed a similar pattern of methane concentrations at both low and high airflow quantities, but a difference in the distribution of methane concentrations between narrow and wide entry widths. Most tests showed that blowing face ventilation was more efficient in diluting methane than exhausting ventilation, similar to observations made in previous empty gallery studies. The patterns of airflow and methane concentrations observed in this testing can further improve the understanding of airflow in and around the CM and face, promoting effective use of face ventilation to improve the health and safety of miners. INTRODUCTION Attaining an accurate understanding of airflow distribution at the continuous miner face is instrumental in maintaining a safe mining environment. US mining regulations require that sufficient airflow must be directed to the deepest penetration of the face and render harmless contaminant gases, as verified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Currently, continuous miner face air readings can be taken in the last open crosscut and at the inby end of the curtain mouth. By measuring adequate airflow in a pre-determined area it is accepted that a sufficient quantity of that air exists to sweep the face of harmful dust and gasses. Unfortunately, due to the location inaccessibility, precise face velocity readings cannot be measured in situ. Face velocities may be estimated through computer-simulated programs based on laboratory models. Improving upon previous empty gallery testing and to more effectively determine representative face methane readings, a mockup of a continuous miner with water sprays and a scrubber fan was used in the current study to further refine face airflow conditions that would be closer to actual mining conditions."

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E&apos;s: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."

The 26th international APCOM symposium, hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, was held Sept. 16 to 20, 1996 in University Park, PA. Conducted about every 18 months throughout the world, APCOM symposia focus on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The APCOM International Council is the governing body of the symposia and determines the symposium’s locations and sponsorships. This group is composed of the nine permanent (voting) members. They include the University of Arizona, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Technical University of Berlin, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The three nonvoting members are Moscow Mining Institute, China Institute of Mining and Rudarski Mining Institute of Slovenia.

Grate discharges historically outnumbered the overflow type of industrial wet ball mills. However, overflow discharge mills now strongly dominate. In order to understand their comparative advantages and disadvantages, Corem carried out a broad review of this topic. Where the data made it possible, the Functional Performance Equation was used to separate circuit classification from mill grinding effects. Batch tests were conducted in a torque-metered mill at different slurry levels. This paper presents the outcome of these investigations, which is a very strong case for the industry to once again consider grate discharges.
