Isotope analyses distinguish biogenic sulfur ores from non-biogenic ores, but do not distinguish bioepigenetic from biosyngenetic ores. Sulfur deposits of salt dome caprocks and of bedded Permian evaporites of west Texas, however, are clearly bioepigenetic. Anhydrite, introduced by salt diapirs into geologically younger sediments, is converted biogenically to sulfur and calcite in the presence of petroleum; for example, in Challenger Knoll, a salt dome at a water depth of 3600 m in the Gulf of Mexico. Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quant1fythe magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted such a study at a mine site located in Greene County, PA. A total of 8 water wells were drilled and hydrologic parameters such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes north-northwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south. Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along stumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

This paper describes the implementation aspect of a blast hole kriging system which has been developed for the purpose of daily ore-waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore-waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBM/PC AT or XT computer, using Fortran language and supplemented by a few Assembly language routines for bit-map manipulation. The emphasis of this paper is on the implementation aspect of the developed system. For this reason, the requirements for practical implementation and the system design considerations are discussed in the paper, as well as the main features of the University of Arizona's BHK System.

Industrial minerals are critical to most aspects of modern society. They are pervasive in both industry and in everyone's lives (McVey, 1989; Barsotti, 1993). They are also the dominant class of minerals produced in the United States but this fact is little known outside the industry. For example, in 1993 (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, table 1) industrial mineral dollar value was double that of metals ($20.86 billion vs. $10.88 billion) and employment levels were nearly so (74,000 vs. 40,000). A further difference is that transportation tends to dominate production costs (FOB end user) whereas they are much less significant in other mining ventures or other industries. Finally, metal mines are more concentrated west of the Mississippi; industrial mineral operations are more prevalent to the east (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, p. 16-17). The significance of transport cost is discussed in Part 2, which is essentially Barker and Austin, 1995. Part 1 will update and expand portions of Barker and Austin (1995) and provide a more detailed discussion of import/export relationships using a China/United States reference point because of China's dramatic influence on some industrial mineral markets since the mid-1980s (barite, etc.).

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district, a major copper-producing area since 1961, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn about 45 kilometers northeast of the northern Chile port city of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Copper oxide minerals occurring as atacamite (Cu C1(OH)3) and chrysocolla (copper silicate-hydrate) were discovered in the district in the early 1900's (Knobler and Joseph, 1962). The mine is situated in the northern Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions on earth, and presently receives less than 1 cm per year of precipitation. The extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert is thought to have prevailed since at least Middle Miocene time (Mortimer et al., 1978) when development of important supervene copper enrichment was slowed in many areas of northern Chile (e.g., Chuquicamata, Exotica). Despite the paucity of precipitation, landform development is mature, with large alluvial fans and alluvial-filled valleys covering much of the region. In addition, the aridity and presence of salts have led to the formation of a sub-surface cementing of alluvium and colluvium by halite-rich caliche ranging from a few centimeters to over 3 meters in thickness. These factors, resulting in poor outcrop exposure, make even reconnaissance mapping difficult.

Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

"Discrete event simulation (DES) is an appropriate framework for the plant-wide analysis of copper smelters. These smelters apply a common set of chemical reactions: copper-iron sulfides are blasted with oxygen-enriched air, sending the iron into a slag phase and the sulfur into the offgas. Moreover, conventional copper smelters exhibit similar operational dynamics: a smelting furnace operates continually, feeding into an alternating set of converters that produce batches of blister copper. The thermochemical and operational commonalities of copper smelters are integrated within the DES framework. This serves as a common basis to begin evaluating the system dynamics of individual smelters. For complex problems, the simulation framework should be developed in phases, incorporating feedback from different personnel who have complementary perspectives. Sample computations are provided in this paper based on the Hernán Videla Lira smelter, whose production is constrained by meteorological conditions. IntroductionWorld copper production is approximately 18.5 million t/y (Brininstool, 2015), worth $80 billion a year. Out of this total, 75 percent comes from the pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide minerals (Fig. 1), which occurs in copper smelters. The remaining 25 percent is from the hydrometallurgical treatment of oxides and complex ores (Rotuska and Chmielewski, 2008), which uses solvent extraction and electrowinning.The current paper describes the pyrometallurgical processing, recognizing that the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics are well known (Degterov and Pelton, 1999), with the notable exception of minor element transport, such as arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi), silver (Ag), gold (Au). The latter is an ongoing area of research, as smelters are faced with increasingly complex ores (Devia, Wilkomirsky and Parra, 2012; Swinbourne and Kho, 2012). This paper focuses on the system dynamics of copper smelter operations, which has received considerably less attention than the chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.Smelter engineers and managers may contribute to the sustainability of their plant by improving their understanding of operational system dynamics. Indeed, we have prompted smelter improvement projects (Navarra, 2016; Navarra et al., 2016; Navarra and Mendoza, 2013) simply by adapting methodologies that are commonly used in other sectors. These previous works incorporate principles from computer-integrated manufacturing (Groover, 2000) and theory of constraints (Dettmer, 2007), featuring the use of discrete event simulation (DES)."

A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in an area of the mine that contains argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This process also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the four other primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

From Nov. 16-20, the Extraction 2025 Conference will be presented in Phoenix, AZ. The unique conference brings together the 12th International Copper Conference, the 6th International Symposium on Nickel and Cobalt as well as cross-cutting symposia. Extraction 2025 is co-organized by The Metallurgy and Materials Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). The previous, and first Extraction meeting (Extraction 2018) was held jointly by these three societies seven years ago in Ottawa and was a huge success with more than 90 percent of respondents indicating interest in attending a future event. Kimberly Mills, senior process engineer at Samuel Engineering, is the lead for SME. “This installment of Extraction is featuring Copper 2025, Nickel-Cobalt 2025 as well as crosscutting symposia,” said Mills. “All three societies participate on the International Organizing Committee for the Copper Conference Series and are well situated to host this event together. TMS is also hosting the Ni-Co conference this year and agreed to include it as part of Extraction. There are many aspects that can be shared between these commodities to share information on processing technologies and to learn from each other.” SME is the overall conference chair and running the logistical aspects of the event, which includes managing all aspects of the venue and the registration system as well as tours and short courses, Mills said. “SME has many dedicated members serving in various capacities on organizing and programming committees, including Nick Gow serving as Technical Committee Co-Chair for Copper and Adam House assisting on the Copper IOC.” When Extraction 2025 kicks off, it will be focused on the metals needed for the global energy transition with a special focus on copper and nickel-cobalt. “With as rapidly as the industry is changing and the huge demands for these metals we have some serious challenges ahead of us,” Mills explained. “These challenges require collaboration, creative solutions and engaging experts, both inside and outside of our fields, with a push for sustainable sourcing, ethical supply chains, environmental and social responsibility.” The International Copper Conference was started in 1987 as a collaboration between the Institute of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCH) and MetSoc of the CIM. The event is typically held every four years and has always been held as a standalone or headlining event at a society annual meeting, said Mills. “Over the years, this conference series alone has brought together members of IIMCH, MetSoc, TMS, SME, the Society for Metallurgists and Miners from Germany (GDMB), the Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ), the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Nonferrous Metals Society of China (NFSOC),” she added. “Being a part of Extraction allows for even more sharing of ideas and expansion of networking. A new mining project can raise questions about what effect it will have on the community after it closes. Historically, little was done by communities to plan for and accommodate the changes in the economic infrastructure when a mine project is finished either after the ore runs out or if market conditions deteriorate and make it unprofitable. Projects that were underfunded were generally unable to withstand periodic market downturns. However, data in a recent study conducted by the Seidman Research Institute leads to the conclusion that, even when a mining project is terminated, there can be (and, in the specific case studied, is) a residual beneficial economic effect in the community, which lasts for a long period of time.

The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

The difficulties associated with performing direct tensile strength test lead to development of indirect test methods, which are simple, less expensive, and less time consuming. Splitting tensile strength test (Brazilian test) is performed by applying two opposite concentrated compression load across the diameter of a disk specimen until the failure occurs along the loaded diameter. Theoretically, the load is applied over a small width as a line load, however, by increasing the load, the contact width between the loading jaw and the specimen increases as the specimen deforms. The main aim of this study is to investigate the stress distribution in (1) regular Brazilian specimen in traditional tests with loading jaws and (2) flattened Brazilian specimen with flat platens. A series of the splitting tensile strength tests and uniaxial compression strength tests are performed on three rock types: rhyolite, basalt, and limestone. Further, Numerical modeling studies are performed to investigate the effect of the contact between jaw and Brazilian specimen on stress distribution in the disc specimen based on the results from the experimentation. Finally, the stress distribution in the traditional Brazilian test specimen and the flattened end Brazilian test specimen were compared.

The balling section of the pelletizing plant at Hoogovens IJmuiden consists of 7 balling drums. Each with an average capacity of 100 tons of green pellets per hour. The balling drums are equipped with rotating scrapers and water-spraying systems. The scrapers are installed in order to restrict the growth of the race to a certain thickness. The spraying system is used to adjust the desired value of the moisture-content of the rewetted ground ore, the pellets and the race. The desired value is the value by which the balling- process is stable, good pellets are formed and surge occurs within certain limits. In October 1980 the construction of one of the balling drums has been modified. The rotating scraper was removed and the inner wall of the drum was supplied with a rubber-lining. In 1982 a second balling drum has been rubber- lined. At the same time the Tyler vibrating screen of this balling circuit has been replaced by a roller(bed)screen. By the end of 1983 all 7 balling circuits will be equipped with rubber-lined drums in combination with roller(bed)screens. The combination of these two modifications will improve the quality and the screen analysis of the green pellets, moreover resulting in savings on energy- and maintenance costs. This paper describes the influence of a rubber- lining on the balling process and the green pellet quality by carrying out in-plant testruns in November/December 1980. The testrun results have been compared with the results of a not modified balling drum.

Nearly a decade and a half after the US and China established formal diplomatic relations, and two decades after the two countries signed the Shanghai Communique and established commercial ties, the world, and perhaps China itself, has discovered that a wealth of natural mineral and energy resources lie beneath China's soil and directly off its coast. The country's coal reserves and oil and gas potential are well known. Its ferrous and nonferrous metal reserves are respectable and in a number of instances pre-eminent. According to 1981 Minerals Yearbook estimates - more often than not below those now being claimed by China - the country's aluminous metal reserves are about 907 Mt (1 billion st); iron ore reserves are 40 Gt (44 billion st); and copper reserves are about 46 Mt (54.4 million st) of contained metal. In addition, the country has about 10.7 Gt (11.8 billion st) of phosphate reserves, the fourth largest in the world, and 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of pyrite. China's national Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in late 1982 ended a stringent three-year retrenchment or readjustment period in which a number of major development projects involving foreign participation initiated in the late 1970s were shelved. The new Five Year Plan is a signal both within and outside of China that things are now moving again, and that major industrial and service sectors are receiving the kind of funding and flexibility they need for expansion, construction and modernization. The new plan's strategy for growth is measured and much less grandiose and frenetic than it was five years ago when China flung open its doors to foreign companies and invited participation in large-scale development projects. Now, the country's reticence to spend foreign exchange to purchase key equipment, technology, and services -a reaction to these projects and the spending they entailed - is clearly on the wane. In China's effort to quadruple its GNP by the year 2000, there is a new willingness to use some of its substantial foreign reserves. In fact, it is projected that 1983 will witness a $1.9 billion deficit, with a $2-3 billion deficit in 1984 and 1985. The following article discusses implications the Sixth Five-Year Plan has for nonferrous metal development in China. It is the first in a series of three articles on Chinese mineral resource development to be published in Mining Engineering over the next few months. The second article will identify specific nonferrous projects underway, while the third in the series will focus on trade and development opportunities for phosphate and potash producers in China. China's Ambitious Plans In the last few months, the exploitation of China's nonferrous resources and development of its industrial processing capabilities have begun to receive increasing attention on both provincial and central levels. Unlike the earlier modernization drive of 1978 when China's ferrous sector - best typified in the Baoshan iron and steel project - got the lion's share of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry's (MMI) energy and resources, it now appears that in some respects the nonferrous and industrial sectors are finally moving out from beneath the dominating shadow of ferrous and getting their own day in the sun. Separation of Nonferrous from Ferrous One clear demonstration of this is the establishment in April 1983 of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNFMIC). The corporation is composed of 819 enterprises with over a million workers, and also includes 12 nonferrous metal construction companies, eight design institutes, and three prospecting companies. Of ministerial rank, CNFMIC is responsible for the development of both the country's nonferrous resources and its processing facilities. Although closely tied to the parent ministry from which it sprang (i.e. MMI), CNFMIC, at least theoretically, is separate and independent from it. One strong indication that this independence is, or soon will become a reality, can be seen from the fact that the new corporation is not headed by the former MMI officials, not even those who made up the ministry's now defunct nonferrous bureau. Instead, its president Qiu Chunfu is formerly of the State Economic Commission and the China International Trust and Investment Corp. Its general manager Fei Ziwen, an engineer in his early 50s, is from the Jiangxi Province Copper Corp. The new nonferrous corporation appears to be powerful
